Love to see Famicom games released games be inspired by 16 bit era classics. It’s just so surreal to see a Famicom game be inspired by a game I picture to be of the 16 bit generation.
Looking back at Nintendo's previous attempt at fighting genre (Urban Champion), this was a huge improvement to the fighting formula and one of the best fighters for the system. Though somehow Nintendo wouldn't return to the fighting genre until, probably, Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64.
Love this game, one of my favorites in the collection… I own a complete boxed copy and even played VS matches with my friends before! Nowadays I only play it on the Switch, just so I don't end up damaging the box and the cart.
In addition to the impressive number of fighters, I'm also really impressed by the number of backgrounds and unique songs in the game! There's a lot of content here. By the way, you mentioned that Joy Mech Fight hasn't been referenced in later Nintendo games. But there's an exception - Sukapon appears as an assist trophy in Smash Bros. Ultimate. So if you ever wanted to see Sukapon fighting against Sephiroth, Ryu, or Wii Fit Trainer, then now you can. One more nice thing about Joy Mech Fight is that it's a very reasonable price for a 1993 Famicom game. I was happy to add this one to my collection.
Joy Mech Fight is pretty much... the best fighting game on console of 1993. Not just the best fighting game on Famicom, but the best fighting game on any console in 1993. Okay so, Neo Geo has Fatal Fury and Samurai Showdown, but those are the actual arcade boards and expensive. You just can't beat Nintendo's price. A 4 megabit MMC3 board with battery back-up for less than 5000 yen. Really, it's not a bad deal at all.
Now we know where Rayman came from. His robo relatives sure are something! Never played much of this game, but I think it's now available on Switch. In Japanese, sure, but you don't need to read Japanese to play this, all things considered. I recall this being very good for a Famicom fighting game.
Definitely aware of this one! Obviously played with the ROM of it cus it was another one we never got here in the US... I probably glanced at it when it landed on NSO some time ago but I was playing so much other stuff I didn't spend a ton of time with it and probably should have. Didn't know about the licensing thing that its tied to a school that's kinda neat! But also too bad they never revisited the concept.
I'm not a big fan of fighting games but Joy Mech Fight brings me the joy while I fight some mechs, that's for sure! It's easily the best game in the genre on NES/Famicom even though I adored TMNT Tournament Fighters in my pre-10s 😁
This video actually got me to try Joy Mech Fight out... I loved it! It's a top 5 Famicom game for me for sure. I'm not even a huge fighting game guy, but I do like quirky fighters. and this game reminds me a lot of ARMS which is a top 20 Switch game for me. Great stuff
I was kicking myself for not picking this up at my favorite second hand store in Morioka in Iwate before I moved to Mie in March this year. It was 2000yen loose and all three copies they had were minty. But I passed it up as I’m not really a Famicom collector, just GB and SFC. Since then I’ve noticed copies but a lot more expensive. I was kicking myself… so today in book off virtually next to the skate park I go to, they had a copy, mint loose for 1210yen. Perfect!
"When you break someone's heart, you get a bir of your life back." Nintendo... Teaching bad life lessons since 1993. 😂 (Also am disappointed you didn't take this opportunity to conjure a port of Front Mission 5 to Switch like you did with Radiant Silvergun. Hmph.)
Skapon actually shows up as an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros Ultimate!
How dare you forget Nintendo’s own Urban Champion from the fighting game legacy of the Famicom!
To be fair it's Urban Champion so not a huge loss XD

2:05 This isn’t true: Tobal 2, the game that’s still holds the record was released in 1997, before KOF 98!
Anyone who thinks fighting games as a genre started with Street Fighter TWO probably didn't think through the implications of that sentence XD
Yeah, but I never got the impression people do. I’ve always thought of it to be the first “modern” fighting game, at least at the time
It's the "Street Fighter 2 clone" subgenre

I love sukapon's no-thoughts-head-empty vibe

I played this when it came out on the Switch NES emulator and it totally changed how I saw Famicom games.
