  • The mind is restless, the mind is turbulent, and meditation helps to still the waters.”
    Legendary American counterculture comic book artist, Robert Crumb is known for his honest depiction of his inner self in various forms, expressing his own anxiety and desires. But there is a side to Crumb that is less known: He frequently meditates. In this video, he explains why. Read less ...
    “We’re very addicted to our distractions - I am too.” Crumb tries to practice meditation that “stops that habit, that compulsion to distract yourself at all times.” The mind, he finds, is very impatient, and so it can be challenging to sit down and do nothing for a given period: “Everything you do just adds to your fucked-up situation. Everything you do just gets you in deeper. Life is a tar, baby.” Meditation, he finds, helps you see things more clearly and even “get a little bit unstuck.”
    Robert Crumb (b. 1943) is an American cartoonist. Crumb, a counterculture comic book artist and social satirist, has enjoyed cult status for his underground comic strips, full of anti-heroes. Among these is a wide range of popular characters including Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural. Much of his work has also appeared in Weirdo magazine (1981-1993), which he founded himself, and which was one of the most prominent publications of the alternative comics era. Crumb has received several accolades for his work, including his induction into the comic book industry’s Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Angoulême Grand Prix in 1999. Crumb was also among the artists honoured in the exhibition ‘Masters of American Comics’ at the Jewish Museum in New York (2006-2007). In 2012 a retrospective of Crumb’s work was exhibited at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He has frequently collaborated with cartoonist Aline Kominsky-Crumb, with whom he is married, and the couple have made a joint comic strip based on their life together through four decades. A collection of the comics, ‘Drawn Together’, was published in 2012.
    Robert Crumb was interviewed by Christian Monggaard in connection with the Louisiana Literature festival at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark in August 2019.

      They're definitely in the winter of their life, but Crumb would appreciate the generous word used. And yes, it's beyond refreshing and glorious to see someone at this age not just be so sharp of mind, but never growing old. You can hear it in every word and gesture...the man's still a horny little 20 year old lol.

    Mr. Crumb is such an amazingly authentic, thoughtful, curious, considerate and insightful man who's has struggled fitting into society specifically because he is an authentic, thoughtful, curious, considerate and insightful man. I wish people like him were the norm rather than the exception.

    Having the blessed honor of having my last BEST COMICS (Best of Two Worlds) book store location in the Haight Half a block from Ashbury immortalized in Terry Zwigoff's CRUMB! bio-doc, having both of them as customers when I got in some thing they liked, I wish to say RC comics soothed a lot of lost souls. From 1972-1993 I sold tens of thousands. It was a big event when a new Crumb appeared.
    Seeing him reflect back in time is heart warming to me. Just because he *gets it* what is important in life. He allowed us to follow his life's path

    I need to meditate more. I do everything else. But meditation would help. God, I feel for him. He's been through so much. His brother killed himself. His son died in a car wreck... and he just lost his wife... He needs this. Art is not enough to be the only therapy for him.

  • @dasc0yne

    To be contemplative is not a special ability. Crumb's gift/curse was that he had the innate ability to compulsively express himself without the filter of self-reflection/self-consciousness. Most artists are too mired in self-reflection/self-indulgence and end up contemplating their navel for most of their lives. It is fortunate that Crumb only discovers how to be contemplative at this point in his life. Had he done this when he was younger he would not have been as prolific or powerful of an artist as he was.

      That doesn’t make sense. Even when he was compulsively expressing himself, contemplation is still there.
      The myth of the “manic and tortured artist=prolific” needs to be put to rest. Are you insinuating meditation and clear thinking would have led him and others to less productivity and not being prolific?

    • @llengsuch3426
      @llengsuch3426 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most likely they had been repressing their madness all along. The meditation practice just gave them the self-knowledge to realise it. You make a fair point, though i.e. if you're not sure you can handle the answer, don't ask the question.
