Mr. Crumb is such an amazingly authentic, thoughtful, curious, considerate and insightful man who's has struggled fitting into society specifically because he is an authentic, thoughtful, curious, considerate and insightful man. I wish people like him were the norm rather than the exception.

And yes, it's beyond refreshing and glorious to see someone at this age not just be so sharp of mind, but never growing old. From 1972-1993 I sold tens of thousands. It was a big event when a new Crumb appeared. Seeing him reflect back in time is heart warming to me. Just because he *gets it* what is important in life. He allowed us to follow his life's path
I need to meditate more. I do everything else. But meditation would help. God, I feel for him. He's been through so much. His brother killed himself. His son died in a car wreck... and he just lost his wife... He needs this. Art is not enough to be the only therapy for him.

To be contemplative is not a special ability. Crumb's gift/curse was that he had the innate ability to compulsively express himself without the filter of self-reflection/self-consciousness. Most artists are too mired in self-reflection/self-indulgence and end up contemplating their navel for most of their lives. It is fortunate that Crumb only discovers how to be contemplative at this point in his life. Had he done this when he was younger he would not have been as prolific or powerful of an artist as he was.

That doesn’t make sense. Even when he was compulsively expressing himself, contemplation is still there. The myth of the “manic and tortured artist=prolific” needs to be put to rest. Are you insinuating meditation and clear thinking would have led him and others to less productivity and not being prolific?
