I’ve watched this entire interview hundreds of times back when it was first released. It’s 2020 and his words are still if not more than ever, relevant with what’s going on in America
As a fellow Ethiopian woman who understands his message I approve this message. 'Negus' means King. And at this point this man is working himself to be a NEGUS.
That outro verse blows my mind. I was going to say blew but every time I listen to it and follow along I get the deepest chills, kendrick lamar genius by far
I love that word historically before slavery this is what we referred to our men as.Then after slavery it was turned into some back for black people. Glad you mentioned it. Haile Salassie had that title.
I was so sad watching this i though kendrick was gonna burst into tears and the way he talks is just... I cant explain it people are going to look back at kendrick interviews they will get a vibe like they are watching pac interviews
I hope all these people who were yelling "Coondrick" and all the azealia banks' can see this interview and realize that they jumped to conclusions & were wrong
They weren't real fans & I'm glad all of the bandwagon fans are gone. FUCK Azealia Banks, no matter how stupid people are on the Internet they will always have their cult following. It's crazy how quickly people will turn on someone they "love" which is what she said before.
Wow, they really called him that? Smh take about tearing someone down. I guess it's easier to not reevaluate your own actions and flaws than to admit when something is wrong. As blk people we need to be realistic with ourselves and take a look at ourselves nd our living situation. We haven't learned shit. So what he's saying is true. At the day of the day we are always going to be targeted by wp but we need to also get our shit together and educate OURSELVES on how white people operate and stop repeating the destructive fate by adapting these positions that have been made to destroy us.
I can't lie, "blacker the berry" makes me cringe... Basically because of the references that could be interpreted as self-deprecating in a way. Small village, monkey ect. But i kind of see him using those descriptions to disarm them
***** he is referring to white stereotypes and saying he doesn't give af what they say he's still a proud black man. It's intentionally supposed to make people feel uncomfortable because these days people are more subtle with their racism, but it still hurts all the same. That's why he said "sneak dissin" on "Complexion."
The themes of Mr Morale and TPAB are very similar, except Mr Morale is more focused on therapy and self reflection. I’m glad Kendrick started going to therapy and he is one of the very few artists/rappers who openly admit to going to therapy. It takes a lot of balls to open up about past trauma and I’m glad he did that. Therapy is good. He’s one of a kind.
Who’s here after Kendrick predictably came out on top in the beef with Drake? He showed remarkable maturity, wisdom, and self-awareness even in his 20s. It's no surprise that figures like Obama, Prince, and others held him in high regard. We can expect even more greatness from him as he continues to share his gifts with the world.
Kendrick looked at it from both angles. You can’t kill people you claim to have love for, and he’s also calling out the racial divide that still exists. He knows change starts from within, you can’t talk about others before making the change within yourself. Leading by example; a lot of us do a bunch of talking, and haven’t made a change within ourselves, dude was speaking from his own experiences, and just praying that will lead to change.
Second comment today but I love how the interviewer directs the conversation away from the mark where KDot is clearly feeling/becoming upset and hurt. (Blacker the berry moment). He could have definitely capitalized and exploited that vulnerability Kendrick was clearly falling into but instead, he drove the convo away from that and I think it’s definitely because he has mad respect for KD as a MAN and a leader and I feel he genuinely appreciates kendricks music and character. Love this snippet of the interview so much for those reasons mainly. Beautifully done. I hope they do another one (no dj Khalid voice…but fine whatever 😆🙄) soon. Love this so much!!!!
He's so real . Everything about him , his presentation , the way he speaks and conveys his message ..its real . I want to keep watching more just to hear him speak bc he's so believable. People who can be real like him and true to heart and open like him..those are leaders. Those are the guys or women you look up to . Idk about all the critisism in this song because when I first heard it , I fell in love .Automatically I felt those emotions raging through me and at the end I felt the same way. No I havent lived no hard life or been put in situations dealing with gang banging , killing etc ..but I often asked the same questions and fustration at the end of the song . Anyway , one of my fav songs on the album and my fav rapper :)
gotta hand it to MTV this is a good interview. I'm always appreciative when interviewers actually try to get a bit of insight instead of trying to just get reaction or just vomit praise on them.
Ive always been on mainstream hip hop but Kendrick has really made me gravitate towards more lyrical and meaningful side of hip hop and music in general
4:39 Kendrick was about to cry because my have killed someone and he's remembering when he killed that person that was the same skin color as him but not wearing the same colors as him and now he is regretting that decision he has made and that's why he made that song "The Blacker the Berry". its a song about how the black community is treated horribly but yet the black community are killing their own kind
One of my fav tracks on TPAB Dot saying hes still apart of his community even tho he doesnt live there. he was fortunate enought to make it out but he have friends and famiky thats not.
someone who takes the time to think what his words sound like before he speaks them. SO much love and respect Kendrick. You are an example of true humanity. I cry tears of joy to see people as pure as you getting into the shitty parts of the world to try and leave this world better for our grandkids. Peace
Much respect to K. Dot. He owns up to what he's done in his personal community that may have been wrong, and he seems like he's striving to rectify those mistakes by being of service and giving back to the community at large. Salute
This is a solid interview, so props to MTV, but man, I cannot think of another artist other than 3 stacks that I appreciate more than Kendrick, maybe Mos Def is in there too.
Man I just watched his performance because my son was telling me about it... All I can say is wow! Kendrick Lamar went deep with it didn't he? I'm proud of him
+FORGIVENESS ISFREEDOM it was touching i can tell you that...I u understand his pain amd views...It's time we set asidebtje negatives thoughts about each and save this planet...well i may be dreaming but we will never recognize asbthe one who influence this Country's culture...
Who ever dislike this video can't understand how much in depth that Kendrick is going through his music. His music is not garbage like many other rappers in the industry right now. His Music is so inspirational and shows the reality of a black man's struggle and what we have to go though like racism which is still exist today. His music is reality. Bottom line, the next legend in Hip Hop is here
Eye appreciate him voicing the fact that HE has contributed to the detriment of his own community. Anyone that thinks they haven't in SOME WAY is dillusional. Th-ankh u Kendrick for your honesty and integrity. Heartfelt interview❤
he made the right choice putting the live version of "I" on the album. props for bringing "negus" and its definition to light. a lot of people don't seem to know what it means. but he wasn't the first like they said, one of capital steez's first release track in named "negus" to the beat of tyler the creator's "yonkers" although no definition or description is given. the track is short but pure fire
too bad he didn't win video of the year in mtv awards Taylor swift won for bad blood after i saw t that i said FUCK THAT *deletes racist comments that would make white people mad* that was bullshit and i turned that and watched something more important
Illmatic is one of the best records of all time and possibly the most impactful rap album from the golden age of Hip-Hop but "It Was Written" is Nas'es best album. I just felt that needed to be said.
I love how he takes the time to think about his answer, something as small as that is important in today's society

Ron Smith Nas, Tupac, Guru, Mobb Deep, Ghostface Killah.
Do you listen to hip hop besides them?
lol u aint heard Earl Sweatshirt or Polo G
@@seantaylor5051 lmao polo g
Man you can see the struggle in his eyes talking about this stuff. I just wanna give him a hug.
This mans music will be played for generations
I can't wait for a rapper 2 speak as highly of kendrick as he does of Tupac
quite good whenever you observe what's going on
no one in mainstream media these days is as honest as kendrick is and that says alot about famous artists today
Except for Kanye West
We need a Kendrick Lamar biopic
I feel like 'good kid, maad city' is his biopic.
i personally think that everyone should support is thing because he inspire a lot of young artist. keep doing you thing man..
Niigi negus amen ase
Kendrick Lamar is brilliant. Hip Hip represents a form of narrative. It's primarily about speaking TRUTH to POWER. Let's keep this ball rolling
9 years ago, we getting old damn
I was so sad watching this i though kendrick was gonna burst into tears and the way he talks is just... I cant explain it people are going to look back at kendrick interviews they will get a vibe like they are watching pac interviews
Agreed!
Insight is damn valuable. Videos like these make me understand Kendrick's music so much more.
It Was Written is A classic though.
He never said it wasn't
Watch from 4:33-4:50, you can see the pain in his eyez as he talks. He even almost tears up just from the memories 4:41-4:44.
Obey MyMindlessness Azaelia Banks came to the realization that Kendrick is genuinely a real one, in one of her recent interviews.
Kendrick should direct a movie, like boys n the hood 2
Yeah, Yeah Yeah
Up
Up
Up
Replay BR and awayyyyy
“I am the community”
Love this so much!!!!
how he talks so passionately about his life's experiences and it's influence to his artistry is just amazimg
I see pain thoughtfulness love peace sorrow knowledge all wrapped up in one man God's blessing to you kendrick and your family and friends 🙏❤💯🙌💙
I love this interview so much , Kendrick is so genuine with his content
To hear that a lot of Lamar's work comes from real life conversations makes his music deeper.
He's eyes be speaking gang, somethin about them
gotta hand it to MTV this is a good interview. I'm always appreciative when interviewers actually try to get a bit of insight instead of trying to just get reaction or just vomit praise on them.
Kendrick is here for the younger generation for sure. I love how he is Positively using his power!
Best interviewer ever man fr
Ive always been on mainstream hip hop but Kendrick has really made me gravitate towards more lyrical and meaningful side of hip hop and music in general
4:39 Kendrick was about to cry because my have killed someone and he's remembering when he killed that person that was the same skin color as him but not wearing the same colors as him and now he is regretting that decision he has made and that's why he made that song "The Blacker the Berry". its a song about how the black community is treated horribly but yet the black community are killing their own kind
i had a stroke reading that wtf
Everyone's in survival mode in their place.
One of my fav tracks on TPAB
Dot saying hes still apart of his community even tho he doesnt live there. he was fortunate enought to make it out but he have friends and famiky thats not.
someone who takes the time to think what his words sound like before he speaks them. SO much love and respect Kendrick. You are an example of true humanity. I cry tears of joy to see people as pure as you getting into the shitty parts of the world to try and leave this world better for our grandkids. Peace
This dude is going to be writing the best musicals soon
He is insanely intelligent. TPAB is a masterpiece and people who call it "trash" are just mad because there's no catchy radio hits.
Kendrick is genius and well spoken love you Kendrick.
Much respect to K. Dot. He owns up to what he's done in his personal community that may have been wrong, and he seems like he's striving to rectify those mistakes by being of service and giving back to the community at large. Salute
1:05 this is why Kendrick is almost universally respected
How have I never saw this
Kendrick is on point.... stays true and puts shame on the corruption within our industry! Amen god is protecting this amazing person xxx
Damn Kendrick is just a person you want to be a very close friend person you can talk to and relate too👌🏽
This is a solid interview, so props to MTV, but man, I cannot think of another artist other than 3 stacks that I appreciate more than Kendrick, maybe Mos Def is in there too.
who's here after they watched his performance at the 2016 Grammy
😯
me
+Candy Gossaye lol..some performance huh
Bottom line, the next legend in Hip Hop is here
Kendrick seems like such a cool guy
I love his personality and his voice is so calm, you can see the wisdom trough it and the honesty❤️❤️❤️
Eye appreciate him voicing the fact that HE has contributed to the detriment of his own community. Anyone that thinks they haven't in SOME WAY is dillusional. Th-ankh u Kendrick for your honesty and integrity. Heartfelt interview❤
Best 3-4 years ever Kendrick's a beast and I love his music and enthusiasm and motivation in everything.
I love how he is comfortable with silence
he made the right choice putting the live version of "I" on the album. props for bringing "negus" and its definition to light. a lot of people don't seem to know what it means. but he wasn't the first like they said, one of capital steez's first release track in named "negus" to the beat of tyler the creator's "yonkers" although no definition or description is given. the track is short but pure fire
The Grammys gon' pay for snubbing Kendrick's GKMC back in 2014. To Pimp a Butterfly gon' win Best Rap Album, even Album Of The Year im sure of it.
It will win and my fear is that the Grammys are gonna be idiots and snub him for Album of the Year.
too bad he didn't win video of the year in mtv awards Taylor swift won for bad blood after i saw t that i said FUCK THAT *deletes racist comments that would make white people mad* that was bullshit and i turned that and watched something more important
Kendrick is one of them people with the rare ability to speak on something and it remains relevant years after
Is this interviewer J. Cole's long lost brother?
J coles brother is actually white as hell
+Cheif Sikbreen lol yoo
Kendrick also be like, 'you and jcole are lookalike'.
+Dready Zealot Constant You must be blind cause Cole's brother is really white lmao
+Rip Phife Dawg that's why he said "long lost" 😂😂😂 stupid ass
Love this dude, I'm Malawian and i wish this man would do a concert here and all through Africa. Keep making music for the people Kendrick.
Illmatic is one of the best records of all time and possibly the most impactful rap album from the golden age of Hip-Hop but "It Was Written" is Nas'es best album. I just felt that needed to be said.
