I liked him a lot for his quiet, morbid ways in the first two, but felt he became a bit of a pompous loudmouth in the last one and preferred when he wasn't so love-struck :). I also felt that him challenging Darrow for alpha-male over his wolfpack was a bit meh. While I own and love the books, the audio books, for me, bring a whole other feeling to the series. Tim Gerard Reynolds absolutely owns the entire feeling of Darrow as a character. You've articulated all my feelings about this series so well. Love your emphasis on the vocabulary and naming that Brown does, and the trauma that Darrow faces throughout. Stellar review of a stellar book! A fun note on names: all the Golds are named ___ au ____. Silvers are named ___ ag ____. Coppers are named ___ cu _____. Au, Ag, and Cu are the atomic symbols for gold, silver, and copper respectively. Subtle, but effective.
Your Review of Golden Son got me to finally start this series and now I've read all the books twice! Glad you enjoyed the first trilogy lets just say the next one is "different in tone."
Its extremely re-readable. The prose is so beautiful, it paints such an image and portrays such emotion. What makes the prose so special is that while it is amazing, it is also accessible. Its easy to read, and still beautiful. That is so hard to pull off.
I'm not normally a sci-fi fan, and when I read the synopsis of the first book, I thought it was a dystopian, so I bought the whole trilogy. I really enjoyed the first book, but I was NOT prepared for the second and third ones. Holy stinkin' crap balls, I LOVED this trilogy!!!!!! I laughed, I cried, and even over a year after finishing it, it still sticks with me. I read a LOT, so I don't keep many books after finishing them or else I would be on my third or fourth storage unit by now, but this trilogy was a keeper. I'm so glad you stuck with it after the first book, and thrilled that you enjoyed it as much as I did! Great review, and lovely covers by Juniper. ❤️
The beginning monologue of Darrow in this book was absolutely devastating and my favorite start to a book ever. At this point I almost regret reading books 4/5 because they are so dark. Unless book 6 wraps up like book 3, I’m afraid I’m going to hate the whole second era. Are the books good? Yeah, totally 5 stars, but they hurt my feelings 😭. The Red Rising series is easily my second favorite series of all time after the Stormlight Archive- and I’ve read A LOT of books, so that’s saying something.
The audiobook of this trilogy is one of the best audio experiences inclusive of audiobooks, podcast, whatever. It’s so good I’ve never read a single red rising book and will only listen to the audio. INSANE PERFORMANCE
You're gonna like it. I'm reading Dune now and I'm seeing similar vibes. I think Pierce Brown did say that some of his inspiration came from that book.
My dog's name is Sevro...I love that character so much...reading "Morning Star" I was screaming "Sevro...noooo" and my poor dog was so confused He looked at me like saying "look lady, Im here just sleeping".
tbh iron gold and dark age have shown me that even without the main conflict there is so much potential for books in this world on different characters. Pre and Post society.
I love that each book, Darrow has to expand the lesson, the first he unifies the Slaves, the Second it’s the PAX and Ragnar, the third it’s the whole System.
If you get the chance you should really listen to the audio books. Probably one of the best narrators I have ever heard and it only gets better in the sequels
I cant thank you enough for turning me on to these! I love the Pros and i get such Titus Andronicus meets a "Hari Seldon moment" in the Foundation vibe.

In terms of integrity and since a coupon code is included, it might be worth acknowledging the thin line between review/unboxing/advertisement. Iron Gold / the continuation trilogy definitely feels different than the first since (this isn’t a spoiler) it’s multi-POV, so the pacing isn’t quite the same, but I do still love it, although I preferred Dark Age to Iron Gold
Literally finished the Golden Son audiobook on my way home from work. Get home, check TH-cam and ma boi Daniel has the Morning Star review uploaded. Perfect timing!
I love how the first series sets up Darrow as the legendary epic hero, seeing his ascension to that (nearly) Messiah level role. And then the following books do their best to tear Darrow down back to his mortal roots. He's still impressive and dangerous, but you no longer feel like he's this walking deity who can just smite his foes with his wrath. You see the broken man who never really figured out how to put down the sword and accept peace, and it calls into question many of the things you like about these characters.
The Red Rising Saga is together with the Realm of the Elderlings my favourite book series of all time. So glad I came to enjoy this series so much more over book 2 and 3. I still remember watching your Red Rising review when it first came out and afterwards unsubscribing from your channel... And coming back a week later deciding to not be silly😅). And the Moon lords get alot more complicated in the spinoff series.

My friend and I just finished book 5 (we took turns reading chunks of it and passed it back and forth) and we both agreed that it is VERY RARE for a series (of any genre) to keep kicking arse when you finish book 5. You made the comment (and I agree) that it's unusual for a book 3 to be better than book 1 or 2 but in this case he just keeps knocking them out of the park. So many times we both read a part and went "WHAT!?!? NO WAY!!!" Can't wait for book 6.
Just finished the trilogy. I'm really impressed with how he fleshed out Mustang/Virginia, giving her extraordinary depth and writing her realistically (her reaction to Darrow being a Red)
I just finished Red Rising the other day and am waiting for Golden Sun at the library. I've heard that the series gets better and I started it for a read along. So I'm gonna keep going. I just want to say that Sevro is the best character, hands down. I want only the best for him. If he dies, I will be so upset
My favourite character by far (in probably all of the books I’ve read) is Darrow. He grows so much, and he does what’s necessary. He isn’t afraid of violence or killing and he’s willing to sacrifice the people he loves for the greater good (I hate characters that sacrifice the entire fate of the world for a random character I don’t care about) and he’s just....Darrow is perfection. But in the next trilogy...oh my god will your heart break. It’s like the older brother of the Red Rising trilogy. It’s more political, but IT HURTS SO MUCH. I actually didn’t used to like Mustang, but then I saw her POV in the second trilogy and I absolutely adore her now.
Okay, you convinced me. I tried to read Red Rising some time ago and just couldn't go on with it. I finished dnfing it around page 50😬, something I don't do. I see all around that it gets better and tbh it does sound such a good series. Imma give it a try!
Could you do a review of The Goblin Corps by Ari Marmell? I haven't seen any requests for that one, which isn't surprising since I've never met another soul that haven't recommended it to that has read it. It is a wonderfully fun standalone, and I have a feeling that you would enjoy it immensely. It is written from the villains' perspectives. Unlike with Jorg, you will find yourself hoping for their success. You will find yourself literally laughing out loud at some of the antics of these unlikely heroes.
I just finished this series in the last few months. It was so good. Red Rising was his first book he ever wrote, which is insane. His writing gets better as the series continues but that first book is pretty dang good for a first attempt. Sevro's storyline on forgiveness got me hard in the feels. I was listening to that part while on a run and I had a little bit of a hard time running while crying. I am surprised you didn't mention some of the BRUTAL stuff Darrow does in this book. Speaking of the Moon Lord's of Jupiter....
I actually don’t think this is correct. I believe he wrote 7 or 8 books (not sure exactly but several) before being published. I remember a conversation Pierce had with VE Schwab where he talked about his 100’s or rejections and the fact that he once wrote a unicorn book he considered “terrible”.
If he was a woman we would have a über "Mary Sue" situation. The first book was so bad, so generic, so blatantly a copy o Hunger Games that I feel ever more intrigued why people praise the series as a whole. I wonder if the editors forced the author to dumb down the first book and try to get the HG/MH audience.
I enjoyed listening to your thoughts on Morning Star! Just finished the audio book (I am a terribly slow reader) and had to scour the Internet to listen in on other people’s thoughts!
Is it bad that I’m considering buying the full Juniper books + jackets set purely based on those covers and this review? The series has been on my TBR...
Depends how much disposable income you have - there's certainly something good about it. I'd be quite content with some slightly battered paperbacks myself.

Thanks Daniel I watched this rivière picked up the book red rising yesterday and haven’t been able to to put it down I cried and it got really good and it was smooth as hell thanks for this amazing review
This is my favourite book series, I’m so happy you ended up enjoying it! I was worried you might not after your first review of Red Rising haha. Buckle up for the second trilogy... you’re gonna need to be ready
Good to know. I loved Red Rising, but not initially. It took me two tries to get going. With second book. I started and stopped again. I’ll have to continue and finish the series. Thanks!
I watched a conversation that Pierce and VE Schwab had on Instagram last summer and I feel like I remember him saying that he doesn’t plot too much, and uses a lot of sticky notes for things. I could definitely be misremembering but I’m pretty sure it was something that didn’t involve super hardcore outlining. Can’t wait for you to read the next portion of the series because WOOF it’s good.
This is truly one of my all time favorite series. Glad to see you enjoyed it as much as I did. Hope you're ready for another Rollercoaster with Iron Gold. Scary that there is multiple perspectives.
I am so glad you read all of the first 3 books!! I simply love these books and was disappointed when you weren’t impressed with Red Rising. Iron Gold starts a whole different style of narrative and I didn’t love it till my second read. And then OMG Dark Age is a monster !! You are going to enjoy reading that one!
I really loved this trilogy, one thing that captivated me was how the lead character became more and more devided within him between red and gold, how the great villains slowly made him doubt his belief systems and the paradigm shifts of the story...I loved it! I liked the first book, and I was apprehensive that the following stories would get worse, rarely and author can portray the political and internal conflict so well, and he does. I was super impressed with the story, to me the best written in the last 10 years tbh. I never get tired of recommending this to my friends hahahah

Last time I was this early, Daniel was still human
Cannot wait to hear your review of Iron Gold and Dark Age. I NEED to know what you think of them. Please do them soon👍
What stood out to me was the gala massacre in golden son. The emotions and chaos is what made me see what humanity really is.
@@jameswinestock5321 I thought I saw it in an interview, but it has been a while. Maybe I am wrong.
I'm glad you've come around and enjoyed the books.
HAIL REAPER!
Good to see ya back Daniel 👍
Darrow is Iconic!! What a man, what a predator, I love him sooo much
Can't wait for your review on Iron gold and ESPECIALLY Dark Age, jeez that book
If he was a woman we would have a über "Mary Sue" situation.
The first book was so bad, so generic, so blatantly a copy o Hunger Games that I feel ever more intrigued why people praise the series as a whole.
I wonder if the editors forced the author to dumb down the first book and try to get the HG/MH audience.
@@tamelo Didn't ask
And this is why you're my favorite reviewer
I enjoyed listening to your thoughts on Morning Star! Just finished the audio book (I am a terribly slow reader) and had to scour the Internet to listen in on other people’s thoughts!
Is it bad that I’m considering buying the full Juniper books + jackets set purely based on those covers and this review? The series has been on my TBR...
Depends how much disposable income you have - there's certainly something good about it.
I'd be quite content with some slightly battered paperbacks myself.
@@MagusMarquillin yeah I think that’s the move. I can always get the nice set later if I really love the series.
Just curious what's your opinion on Roque???...
The Great Roque Debates of 2016
This is my favorite book series so to see you come around on it is so awesome! I'm glad you ended up enjoying the series and just eait until you see what the next two have in store for you
Thanks Daniel I watched this rivière picked up the book red rising yesterday and haven’t been able to to put it down I cried and it got really good and it was smooth as hell thanks for this amazing review
Scary that there is multiple perspectives.
i just put ur vids when i study and ur vid is pretty soothing ig.
You could've separated these topics into three videos but you didn't. I respect that.
Our Danny boiii is back!
Great review! Can you tell me where I can get that shirt, though??
I’ve never really been interested in this series, but it’s a Daniel video. What am I supposed to do, not watch it?
I am so glad you read all of the first 3 books!! I simply love these books and was disappointed when you weren’t impressed with Red Rising. Iron Gold starts a whole different style of narrative and I didn’t love it till my second read. And then OMG Dark Age is a monster !! You are going to enjoy reading that one!
Your reviews are always one of my favs. I'm honestly curious how you'd review other genres other than fantasy XD
Hi man! Maybe you can help me. Love the red rising. Can recommend any series anyway like this ?
I really loved this trilogy, one thing that captivated me was how the lead character became more and more devided within him between red and gold, how the great villains slowly made him doubt his belief systems and the paradigm shifts of the story...I loved it! I liked the first book, and I was apprehensive that the following stories would get worse, rarely and author can portray the political and internal conflict so well, and he does. I was super impressed with the story, to me the best written in the last 10 years tbh. I never get tired of recommending this to my friends hahahah
The praise of the prose hooked me man. Also an interesting series to look at would be The Book of the New Sun series if you haven’t already.
I found Red Rising during the first month of the quarantine last year and I binged the first 3 books in a month. Hands down my favorite series, definitely want to get my hands on the a physical copies ASAP 👏🏻❤️
Can’t wait for the Dark Age review
