    Correction: We're at the very least Quadrilingual. Luxembourgish, german, french and english are all mandatory languages. On top of those 4, a lot of people additionally speak dutch or portuguese or spanish as well.

    Luxembourgish, or Lëtzebuergesch, is the native language of Luxembourgers. Foreigners often tell me it sounds like Dutch but softer. It has kept much of the German grammar and syntax and a lot of its words can be traced back to either German or French.

    I have cousins in France and Luxembourg who I stayed with last year.
    I can't emphasize how multilingual everyone is there. Two of the cousins who I met are around 20 or 21, and since I only spoke English, they apologized since English was their "fifth language". Yet within minutes I realized they had a -very- advanced knowledge of English. Their fifth language and were visibly uncomfortable speaking it, but did it way better than most people who I know speak English as a second language.
    I don't know how the Luxembourgers do this, but whatever language learning techniques they have needs to be exported.
    Also, the Grand Duchy lives across the street from a business called the Chocolate House. They have his portrait behind the counter.
    And I didn't know Mondorf-Les-Bains was a major site even though my cousins paid for me to go there for the day. There are a lot of old naked men who are there in the facility. No joke.

    • @kingtomas7276
      @kingtomas7276 5 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      We don't have any special learning techniques for languages here, we just learn it. You don't need to know all four languages in the first place. Not everyone in Luxemburg is a polyglot after all. I suggest if you're a tourist French and English are your best bet but if you want to live in Luxemburg, Luxemburgish and French are very usefull to start off with.
      German is only taught because Luxemburgers have more difficulty in learning French than German. Otherwise German is only spoken at work...sometimes. So don't expect people to talk German in Luxemburg when you visit the country. Learn Portuguese it's way more usefull the German😂
      P.S. I live in Mondorf and I can relate😂😂

      learning languages is only weird in Britain.
      Most Germans speak English, Dutch people speak at least two, but rather three (German, English and some speak French), etc.
      In the UK it is not really emphasised how important it is to pick up a language and as a result you don't really find anyone to practice it with if you would like to start it (unless you'd go for Czech or Polish in which case you'd find plenty of people :D )
      And my favourite: if you can say baguette and bonjour, you'd say you speak French. :D
      On the other hand there are some tenacious fellows. The former British ambassador in Hungary actually bothered to learn our language and most people who know him adore him for that

      @FairyCRat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@Sirinwara French people are also monolingual most of the time. More and more of us speak English, but we tend to be pretty bad at learning languages, simply because, just like the US and UK (and unlike Luxembourg) we're not exposed to foreign languages from a young age as French is already a major language and many people don't see the need to learn anything else as they can access most media and information in French. It's basically the same kind of situation as when American people come to visit Europe and get frustrated when realizing that not everyone speaks English.

    To the intelligebility from German: I was in Luxemburg with two friends once. My father comes from the Eifel, where the dialect is very similar, so I could understand Luxembourgish without problems. However, my friend from Hannover didn't quite get everything, and my friend from Saxonia (the other end of Germany, geographically and language-wise) couldn't even guess what they were saying ... so, it depends on the region of Germany, I guess

    The reason of the Portuguese people in Luxembourg:
    From the 60’s on Luxembourg started major infrastructure projects and needed the builders to litterally build the whole country to the new era. Due to the high unemployment and poor economic situation under Salazar’s rule, Luxembourg welcomed the Portuguese people and offered them work. Portuguese immigrants saw quickly that the Luxembourg was better and prosperous country to raise a family than Portugal, so they stayed, eventhough the infrastructure projects were finished. Also, Luxembourg has a highest minimum wage in Europe. You can’t pay less than 2000€ (gross) per month for an employee.

      That's true but you forgot to mention the heraldic connection from 10th generation back to Michael I of Portugal.
      Also, Robert I, Duke of Parma, 1884 to Infanta Maria Antonia of Portugal, daughter of the deposed King Miguel I of Portugal and his wife, Adelaide of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg. Maria Antonia was his second cousin once removed, as her paternal grandmother (Charlotte of Spain) and Robert's paternal great-grandmother (Maria Luisa of Spain) were siblings, both children of Charles IV of Spain and Maria Luisa of Parma. She bore him another 12 children, among others was Prince Felix, who married Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg, his first cousin (their mothers were sisters, and had issue, including Jean - Grand Duke of Luxembourg, who's funeral held today 4.5.2019.
      His grandmother was Infanta Marie Anne of Portugal (Portuguese: Maria Ana; 13 July 1861 - 31 July 1942) was Grand Duchess of Luxembourg as the wife of Grand Duke Guillaume IV and the country's regent in the name of their daughter, Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde. She was a member of the House of Braganza.

      I really doubt that the heraldic connection, backing centuries in time of the two countries, were in the minds of the unemployed Portuguese people when they were searching for jobs around Europe. It’s more of a pleasant coincident that they and Luxembourg found each other. Nice detail though, what you wrote.

    I've been to Luxembourg and while I knew it was a small country, being there made it feel even more so (there was even a Chi-Chi's, something I had not seen in America for years at that point).
    I remember that in downtown Luxembourg City, at least one corridor, it felt like I was inside of a mall food court, but not in a bad way.
    I also got to see both of the veteran cemeteries there.
    I rather liked it and I would go back if I am ever in that part of Europe again.

      Historically, Italians and Portuguese guest workers were called to Luxembourg to work in the mines as Luxembourg was BIG on the steel industry. (since they were Catholics like Luxembourg, it was easier to get them into the society culturally.) The rest is more or less Luxembourg being filthy rich and therefore very attractive for immigrants

    This is really interesting. And you nailed it with the "not a German dialect". FYI, you'd be hard pressed to find a native who speaks "only three" languages. As there are so many foreigners, they'll have a Spanish mum and Italian dad, for example, so will speak these, too. And all seem to be super fluent in English, too!

    as Luxembourger and biologist, I have to add that the country has an astonishing high diversity of biotopes (and thus species) for such a small surface, exactly because as you very well mentioned it has it has an interesting geography. The "terres rouges" ("red earthes") of the minette (rich in ore) being quite extraordinary and now has lots ofprotected areas.
    And now, we are not a "small switzerland" but the Müllerthal region is called the "little luxemburgisch switzerland". It's forests are so unique (and fairy-like beautiful!) that they were even treated in the "vegetation of the earth" basic biology course at my university in Germany. Can only recommand them to allhikers out there.
    And we had a large immigration of italians as well.
    Anyway, very nice video!

      Another theory, which is actually a fact as well, when the steel mining business really took off, luxembourg needed workers from other countries cs we didnt have enough. Many italians as well as portuguese cam to luxembourg for work. Thats why the most portuguese and italian people live in the south-west of the country where all the mines were
