@@mortal19901001 oh dear, someone has taken my comment seriously.
Luxembourg has a standing army of approximately 550 personnel.
It was commendable of the country to send a portion of it's army to assist the UN efforts in Korea in 1950-53, but their efforts would have been nothing compared to the thousands of US, UK and other nation's troops that were fighting to stop a Communist takeover of the South.

What’s really good about Luxembourg is that if you’re driving from Spain/France to Belgium and on to the Netherlands or vice versa, as I often have been, is that you can fill up your car with petrol at significantly lower cost than in the other countries mentioned. Of course I know that Luxembourg has wider importance (coal, steel etc) as well as being quite beautiful, but from a very selfish point of view its low petrol taxes make it a convenient place to fill up the tank during a lengthy car journey 😂👍.

I can't imagine what an even bigger mess we'd be in if we did get to annex it we're only barely hanging on as a country as it is hahaha (we're already 400+ days without a federal government and counting) so thank you France from protecting us from ourselves.
Same as when Netherlands wanted to re-annex Belgium in the weeks after the revolution. France also stepped in and said Non. I guess they were still angry that Napoleon couldn't take anything a few decades earlier and decided no one gets to take anything. Not on their watch, non non.
They almost succeeded.
Luxembourg had a referendum in 1919 about it's own future and staying independent largely won out. Otherwise they would possibly have had their way. The Luxembourgers also wanted an economic union with France, who declined. So Belgium instead got an economic union with Luxembourg, which stands to this day btw.
This was mainly due to the fact that luxembourgish people fought the war during the belgian revolution and wanted to be part of Belgium when it was created, this was not done because of the fortress of Luxembourg City, which was occupied at the time by a prussian garnison.

One thing about Luxembourg not mentioned is the fact that the capital city of Luxembourg which is Luxembourg city is basically built on top of a massive rock outcropping from the surrounding areas. 0:39 “Charles did the french king a solid and died”😂
Fun fact: Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, did not just "die", he was killed in battle. He wanted his "kingdom" to extend over the entire region between Burgundy and the Netherlands, which meant annexing Lorraine (shown as belonging to him on your map, but he never held to it). Lorraine was at the time split between 5 different duchies and ecclesiastical principalities (or "Prince-Bishoprics"... that's a mouthful) under either the Holy German Roman Empire or the Kingdom of France. In the end Charles was killed in the battle of Nancy against Lorrain, Alsatian and Swiss forces, and his body was found several days later, already damaged by wolves.
And after Charles' Death, Burgundy never regained the power it had had throughout the Hundred Years' War and ceased to be a thorn in the King of France's side.

Granpda Corey There is no rule that states, because you belong to a certain country or ethnic group, you are better or worse at certain things. In the end it’s only down to personal skill and how much ability you get to grow. Napoleon was just a good general and charismatic person who happens to come from Corsica. (And Corsicans are neither French or Italian btw)
Wait why are you guys talking about this in a joke comment
@Granpda Corey Well you dont Know history then. How a country Who invaded Europe and spread all modern ideas of the révolution on which all modern democracies are based does not matter ?
Napoleon was not italian as that did not exist back then. He was born French in the French island of corsica and led France to domination. Then if France did not matter, how they came to have the second largest colonial Empire in the 19th/20th centuries. Why did they invent the car, plane, metric system, vaccines, radioactivity, photography and so on...
Why they forged many countries by helping them to be independent (Belgium, Italy, Greece...). Why they sacrificed millions of men to Win ww1 and be the top Wiener ? Why do they have the nuclear bomb and are one of the UN top 5...
Napoleon was not the end of France. You just need to learn about it
@Granpda Corey He wasn't a full blooded italian... He was from provence but lived in Corsica, which was already french.
France is a vast country. We have multiple European ethnicities inside of it.
Northern france is like belgium/german. South is mediterranean.
@Granpda Corey Dare to say to a Corsican he is an Italian and you will see.
I was so amazed when I learnt about the fact the House of Luxemburg once ruled over the Holy Roman Empire, the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Kingdom of Hungary. This tiny country had some really powerful leaders.
The things is, "ruling" back then wasn't really what it is now. Especially not when the HRE was concerned.
@@Zwijger Yeah, and the House of Luxembourg ascendancy only happened b/c the lowly origins of their house made them appealing compromise candidates to the electors of the late middle ages.
At this point the HRE was incredibly weak. The legitimate heirs to the Empire, the descendants of Frederick II, had been disinherited by the Pope, so a number of families vied for the title of King of the Romans. The Nassaus, the Habsburgs, the Luxembourgers, and an English prince all held the title at one point or another.

Luxembourg was one of many NATO members to send its troops to Korea, and their most famous foght was the Battle of the Imjin River in which the combined Belgian/Lixembourgish troops held off waves of Chinese assaults. Since then Luxembourg has sent UN troops throughout the years even to the present.
“Did [him] a solid a died” is a great line. You doing jokes in your unwavering tone is hilarious.
"Why does Luxembourg exist?"
Because there haven't been any world wars lately.
And because Germany lost both of them.
And both France and Germany wanted neither to get the land.
Fun fact: Luxembourg also had quite an strategic importance and hence why it allowed to remain independent and somehow like a bargain chip between great powers, like France and German states. It was know as the "Gibraltar in the North" due to its strong fortress, usually hailed as one of the Europe's best fortification, a status which would remain until quite late in the Renaissance.
This video was awesome.
Wow. Good vid
Imagine thinking Luxembourg exists lmao

Luxembourg: Exists
History Matters: Why you do that
Speaking of Nassau, what about a segment explaining why Baarle-Herzog and Baarle-Nassau exist as such? Other videos exist on the subject, but they tend to be preoccupied by the fact of the weird borders and their legal implications rather than the question of why the weird borders in the first place. I would be interested to hear your take. Thanks!
If you want to know how small they currently are: The part the Belgians took from Luxembourg is currently the province "Luxembourg". This province is bigger than the actual country.
History Matters, you have way enough subscribers to just walk into Luxembourg and annex it. No need to ask that question anymore
MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT THE UYGUIR GENOCIDE OR PAPA STALIN WILL SEND YOU TO THE GULAG!!!
I wouldn't be so sure-numbers aren't everything, and armies made of TH-cam subscribers are infamously undisciplined.
@@timothymclean No, no. He's got a point...
I think it would be easier of James Bissonette just bought it.
Waiting for "Why does Andorra exist?"
Ooooh, that's a good one! A lot of wacky feudal hereditary law.
The place where King of France still exists
I love this channel. So many sly little jokes crammed into a very informative 5 minutes or less.
Thanks for the video. Greetings from a Luxembourger living in Luxembourg! ☺️
0:03 - Including Belgium in the French speaking world. *6 million Flemish people glower at History Matters*
"in 1477 Charles did the French a solid and died"... I am still laughing, excellent delivery
"...And it took a whole 6 seconds for France to pounce and take these lands"
This channel..
Everytime a character appears with suspicious eyes I die of laughter..
Love the character dancing through the daisies fields.. more laughter!!!
refreshing to see a video about our small country
*VIDEO SUGGESTION:*
When did The Celts first arrive in Britain, and who inhabited Britain before them?
@John B. i have a guess, 1. Ottomans, 2. Russia
Dat Lettuce neither. It’s just the bulgars didn’t impose their culture on the Slavic population.
@John B. how come Suomi in the same linguistic category as Magyar?
Celtic people didn't migrate to the British Isles, Celtic culture and language did through trade, in fact French people outside of Britanny are ironically "more Celtic" than the Britannians or the Britons, or the Irish.
黑龍 - Hắc Long yes they did. A small band of warriors and migrants conquered the British isles and Irish isle through warfare. They imposed their culture and language, and made a barely noticeable genetic impression.
I think his voice is becoming more and more calmer trough the videos. He started with a bit agressive voice in his first videos, and it became calmer.
Almost Impossibly Tiny Nation: exists.
History Matters: that's free real estate!

Greetings from Luxembourg😘
