Right when I released my first video on this channel, I already couldn't wait to cover the 14th legion.. and now I have! They are my personal favorite for their amazing twist, going from bad omens and disgrace to glory and victory! Make sure you check out the remains of the 14th that we were able to add to the video at 22:26, they are quite amusing! I think I will have something like this at the end of every legion video from now on.

When learning about history, we often focus on the big shots and the expansive political and geographical picture. Y'know, the larger than life monarchs; the rise and fall of entire civilizations; the large scale battles; over arching wars and what not.
But when we take a step back and start looking at the events and historical figures from a more human and down to earth perspective you instantly remember that those statistical numbers that were mentioned in the wiki casualties list, were all just normal humans just like you.
Because the annals of history only record the most influential of people and events. The common man of the time period is often forgotten about. Consequently, we often neglect them as a result.
But just as you have pointed out in your comment, when we are reminded of these ordinary people and their resonating stories that we find all too relatable (despite thousands of years of difference), it always feels surreal. Considering not only how rare it is to come across, but also how despite living thousands of years apart their messages and actions still relate and evoke deep emotions in us.
      It truly is surreal man
Edit: i realize now that this comment's length and tone might have been out of place XD, but your comment really struck a chord with me man.

@@at1_a Fortunately the romans left us with an astounding amount of archaelogical data that can be used for giving voice to the common people. Roman legionaries were extremely kind by recording their whole military careers with years of service, age, origin, family and units on their tombstones.
And yes you are absolutely right, history, and military history included, had until very recently focused on the lifes of generals and battles. Thankfully nowadays that is changing and we can enjoy a great amount of books and publications about the experience and life of the average citizen in the ancient world

      Roman style of fighting.
      Lines revolve after few minutes.
Legoins fight defensively until enemy is tired.
With every line change tired legionaries get back and rest (get their wounds fixed enough to continue fighting)

Rome had a series of loyal or at least, 'compliant' Germanic tribes east of the Rhine. Some Germanic chieftain wanting to sow favor with Rome, revealed the hiding place of the third lost eagle.

Also the longer form makes it possible to calculate with the roman numerals, eventhough I think they weren't used to make any calculation, but if you want an example
    (14 + 68) XIIII + LXVIII = ?
take both numbers and just put them together
    L XX V IIIIIIII
then see if there are numbers repeating more than four times (or two times in the case of V, L or D) together, in this case there is "IIIIIII" (7), so you should convert it to "VII", it will make:
    L XX VV II
Convert the "VV" in X, and you have the answer:
    LXXXII (82)
    Another example:
    648 + 1468 (DCXXXXVIII + MCCCCLXVIII)
    M D CCCCC L XXXXX VV IIIIII = MDDLLXVI = MMCXVI (2116)
To make subtraction take away from one side what you see in the other:
    (65 - 54) LXV - LIIII = (L)XV - (L)IIII = XV - IIII
Transform the V in IIIII, repeat if necessary.
    XIIIII - IIII = XI(IIII) - (IIII) = XI (11)

Do you mean how they got destroyed or ceased to exist? The last known legion is V Macedonica in the VII century (we will cover it in a future) but the rest disappeared in the wars of the V century AD without notice. The last document we have is the Notitia Dignitatum which lists all organization of the roman army and administration. It dates from 400-420 AD. Except that I'm afraid there is little more about specific legions. I'm sorry for the bad news :(

Jon Etxeberria Rodriguez . Indeed, it is what I suspected, but I think that it would be nevertheless interesting to cover the disappearance of the roman army in the West. Procopius reports that some roman units were accepted in the Frankish army. Odoacer’s army was ,at least formally, still a roman one. Some roman citizens served as generals in the Visigothic and Frankish armies, Arbogast the younger retained the control of Trier as comes probably until 497 DC. Post roman Britain and Ambrosius Aurelianus deserves a separated treatment. In any case I congratulate you again. Your work is awesome.

@@antoniotorcoli9145 Yes it could be done but in more general terms as you say. Like the last roman units of we have notice of and the last roman warlords. But not covering specific units like for example the Ioviani or Herculiani

TH-cam hasn’t been recommending your videos to me for a while now, but I love your work and have been subscribed from nearly the start, the best I’ve seen on the specific side of Roman history. In my opinion you are definitely on the level of folks like historica civilis, though he had a focus on Roman politics rather than military.

Superb video! Lots of detail and excellent narration. The progress of the Legion's timeline was easy to follow. I liked the nice detail at the end with the tombstone, that was a nice cherry on the cake! It worked nicely to remind us of the real people involved and their thoughts. Job well done.! edit: The recreated faces of the Romans was a great detail also.
