    In part 2, The 14th will completely change its fate and win victory after victory, until it will one day be named the "most effective legion" by Emperor Nero, and win other titles, being later known as: "Legio XIIII Martia Gemina Victrix", Mars' victorious twinned 14th Legion (Mars is the Roman God of war). Watch their glorious comeback in Part 2: th-cam.com/video/BvwUBYPT1BE/w-d-xo.html

    • @jrt818
      @jrt818 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's correct. It's the reason Louis the 14th wanted it written XIIII. Had his clocks with IIII for 4 and VIIII for 9.

    • @javierdaniel1429
      @javierdaniel1429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I googled it but I also went to undergrad and grad for Military history, specifically Roman history. That they would change their numbers on occasion makes no sense - they were all about order and ensuring that systems (linguistic, militaristic, numeric) were always followed to the T.
      That being said, I also have never seen the Legio XIV Gemina banner with four "I"s on it, until this video. The Romans were masters at organizing and maintaining Legions, so any sloppy numbering is out the window completely.
      And I believe someone brought up the Sun King in their reply - what does that have to do with anything? We're talking ROMANS.

    • @javierdaniel1429
      @javierdaniel1429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Martin Čelko thanks for the reply. However, I cannot see the Romans playing around with numerals and Legion standards like this, it's not in their nature. And the visuals in military garb/standards were indeed important to the point where four lines vs 3 lines would in fact make a huge difference.
      Imagine being a commander and you can't tell if the standard said "4" or "3" - how would you be able to tell in the middle of battle between the two from a far distance? III and IIII would look basically the same, in the haze of a melee, so it makes sense that "XIV" would indeed have to be the logical choice to distinguish from Legion XIII especially if you needed to make calls in the middle of an engagement.

    • @javierdaniel1429
      @javierdaniel1429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jrt818 what does Louis XIV have to do with this? We're discussing the Romans.

    I would love if you could provide a timestamp in one corner to remind us what era and time we are talking about.. It would be awesome if it was dynamic but a 50 year like 50BCE-0 would also be good! The rule you quote is actually a more modern convention. It was common during this period (ca. 100 BC to 200 AD) to use IIII (versus IV) when indicating the number 4. Two examples of which I am certain is IIII (4) and XIIII (14). 90% of my knowledge of the Roman Empire is directly related to the various legions and of these two numbers, I am certain. I have no idea as to why it was done.

      @@HistoriaMilitum when I read about this it seemed like Cicero was already there when the tribune's legion was destroyed. It also said Caesar was surprised by how well Cicero handled the siege. But mainly ambiorex was sieging Cicero's camp and not the Germans.

      @@tyty-xm8fw After the Eburones destroyed Sabinus and the 14th, they besieged Cicero and another Legion. In the video I say "with his favored 10th, Caesar defeats the Eburones". It was then that Caesar says Cicero did well in holding off against them. (Cicero was with another legion, not with the destroyed 14th legion). Then, after raising another 14th, Caesar gives Cicero the command of it. Hope this helps clear it up.
