    I believe a lot of artists begin as Michael because most of us start drawing as children, eager to copy the shapes of the comics and animes we watch. I am one of those people! Never had the money to get art lessons so I'm really glad to have found this. I'm 20 years old and have been drawing since I was a kid, but I struggle with everything you had mentioned. Time to unwind my habits and start anew! Really excited to learn :)

      I guess it's a good start for me because I never knew how to draw figures in the first place.

      I'm going to college for art right now, and for most of highschool I set aside art for academics. It was a rational choice and it has helped me a lot financially, but I feel so behind the other kids. I know I have talent, but I can see how other's have developed their craft and their experience shines through. I was beginning to feel a bit dejected until I read this comment. This quote was exactly what I need to keep going. Thank you so much. I just wanted to let you know you have made a difference in someone's life today. :)

    As a complete beginner who has never touched a pencil properly. Part one was actually extremely helpful for me. Why all the complaints? The guy was clearly telling us not to rush.
    Since I'm a complete beginner, he was explaining the mistakes, I was about to do, through decent storytelling and imagery to make it look interesting. Unlike some other bland tutorials I've seen.

      I am the ”Michael” 1-2 years since i picked up art
      *holy shit this tutorial is useful*
      the way i used to construct a human body was just draw a stick figure with a 1/7 head ratio and extra joints
      I knew perspetive but didnt know jack shit about applying to anything outside of cubes so it was useless or incorporating in a drawing (all i knew is that things get smaller as they aproach the horison line)
      The single annoyance that i had is that in 8/2 he uses a line measurments for proprotions instead of heads but they are the same proportions in the end

When I see a beautiful drawing I breath deep and I think "Ohh I wish I could draw like that". I'll stay tuned and follow, hopefully this will help me. Thank you very much!!!

      the thing is... you'll always feel like that. as you get better your ability to spot mistakes will also become better and things that you used to think look good will start looking bad. even really amazing artists think they suck, so don't feel bad. the important thing is using it to motivate yourself to get better instead of thinking it's hopeless and giving up.

    This is so very, very true and I actually learned this the hard way even though I really wasn't doing this on purpose. I started out drawing characters out of comics and pictures online with out really learning how to draw the figures foundation. This is very important to build up the foundation first and go from there. That is why I am going back to the beginning and rebuilding my foundation to become better. Watching these tutorials and attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh I believe that I will be able to overcome this and grow exponentially has an artist.

    I'm having to do what micheal did and re-learn the basics. It's proportions and anatomy I need to do all over again. I'm working on a graphic novel and while I can wing it and use reference while making it look good, that takes a lot of time and trial.

      Glenn Anadeo Actually, contrary to popular belief, most of us youngsters are rather well-spoken. We are the ones who will comment on a video, never to reveal our age so we can be taken seriously. I'm 13, but I've been using proper grammar for quite a long time now; it even irks me to see people using incorrect grammar from time to time. I know we all look stupid, but fear not. Us educated teens still exist.

    I recently submitted my first set of sequential pages for a comic art contest with Top Cow. The feedback I received was both positive and negative. The negative was basically that my figures need better proportions and that some of my panels fell flat. Exactly what you're describing in this first video. I am one of those artists that learned from years and years of life drawing classes, but lazily ignored the foundations. I always just told myself I can draw anything if I can see it. But the problem with comics is that you don't have a life model in front of you for every single pose you need, so it needs to be drawn from the mind. That has really bit me in the behind! I'll let you know how these videos help me out. I have two weeks to resubmit my pages, so I've got to hurry up and relearn, fast!

    My brother...the story of Michael is the story of my own shortcomings as an artist. My friend is going through what you talk about here. He spent years learning on his own, and we are now in a beginning figure drawing class and it's a lot harder for him because he has to unlearn how he draws and go back to basics and he isn't learning much and I didn't know anything about drawing at all and my drawings are starting to be better than his already and I feel really bad for him. But he has to do it I think, if he is going to learn how to draw really well.

    I kind of lost my touch with drawing during middle school to high school, and only after graduating, I'd slowly rediscover it, and all I have been doing of drawings are what I see as just doodles rather then art, I've never really been big on drawing tutorials, or wanting to learn how to draw full scale figures, but now, after 4 years of doubt, and anxiety, I'd like to give this a try and learn.

    My drawings can only look decent when i have a refference, and as an artist that feels like a huge dissapointment and it feels somehow like cheating. It makes drawing less fun. So thank you for this video series. I feel already motivated to go back to the basics, and improve my talent.

    I"m so done with sucking at figure drawing I'm ready to put in the work that it takes to finally get as good as the artists I've grown up admiring my whole life. It's my turn to be the admired one \o/

    Wow, I totally share a connection with Michael. I started drawing other people's work by looking at them but when I tried to draw my own I couldn't do it. FYI I did not claim the others work to be my own. That would be atrocious.

    I doubt alot of people hear draw manga but if you do it is really important to learn the human figure even thought the tipical manga face is a bit absract the body is often very realistic.

    Try drawing lines in PC drawing programs. It's easier to see errors in line drawing because of pixelation.

    I think the reason that there are many dislikes is because this is the video only tells you that you need these videos (i.e. it is 6 minutes of the instructor telling you why you need instruction without any drawing instruction content). Video #2 is good has the drawing instruction content.

    Hi im new at practicing to draw im 17 and i wana draw kind of like a manga/anime style but dont know where to start people say on here start from realism then to comic style/cartoon because its faster learner and itll help alot. i make comics but my drawing sucks ive always been a bad drawer but i love art and such where do i start , what kind of videos do i look at i need a figure to point a direction thatll help me /:

      Karikaeru Ace Hi,
      I Would say that it's a good idea to learn how to draw realism first as that's the foundation and you can branch out from there to any style you'd like. I will be making more figure drawing tutorials which I think will help. But in the meantime, I would highly recommend you check out Mark Crilley. He's a great artist and teacher and he specializes in Manga drawing. Here's his channel: th-cam.com/users/markcrilley

    • @alexserellis4255
      @alexserellis4255 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PLZ READ THE WHOLE THING BEFORE YOU CLICK AWAY :)
      Something that helped me ALOT was Koizu's "How to draw the female body proportions: teenagers" after that my drawing became a lot better
      Secondly try sycra's "how to make your characters more interesting" that helped give me dynamic to my pieces
      Also I don't draw Manga specifically so I can't help you much there but I would say to focus on the eyes and hair as those are the signature features along with the pointy chins
      I have some other advise if you would like. My Twitter is @Tertablis tweet me and I'll follow you and It'll make it easier to talk to you about things :) I'll answer any questions you have and give you advise as you need.
      (Sorry if I got any of the video names wrong I wrote this from memory)

    • @alexserellis4255
      @alexserellis4255 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also DONT TRY REALISM PLZZZZZZZZ
      Yes build your knowledge of anatomy and structure but when it comes down to it you don't need realism if you aren't going to be drawing realism.
      Start with basic structure and then Manga and then progress to realism if you would like
