It's a good thing I'm retired. I'm mesmerized by your tutorials and working my way through the list. I truly understand the value of creating my own figures. Freedom versus copying. Thanks so much.
Another thing about foreshortening that's important to think of is the point of reference. if you're viewing a foreshortened object from a distant POV, all parts will appear to be proportionately sound. However, the closer you get to said object, the larger the outermost part will appear, relative to the rest. So if you put your hand on your face, it'll appear larger, in comparison to whatever's behind it. When you extend your hand further away from your face, it appears to shrink. It seems intuitive once you acknowledge it, but believe me, it is something a lot of beginners fail to understand.

Hey man, thanks for this series. It was starting to drive me a little nuts that I had made such progress with the loomis and Reilly Method; but was still struggling to see the simple mannequin. I see now I was making it more complicated than it needed to be. Honestly if I could do it over again; I would probably study this series, your portrait series, and loomis first; and put off the other figure drawing methods that seemed to muddy my progress a tad. But we all learn differently, and I believe that being able to recognize and admit the things you still don’t understand becomes more important but also more difficult as we advance through skills. But that is just my humble opinion. Thanks again for what you do, Charles L

Thank you for this video it's very helpful, we have a mannequin that's been slowly becoming part of our office decor for the past year that we need to start putting to use--the insight and tips you provide make the process of learning the human body much less intimidating! 😊
This is a video every struggling artist must watch ! I ve been struggling on Human figures and gesture for 45 days now, i ve watched countless tutorials, bought books ( which i dont regret) and still catch the grisp of how to practice without reference. The problem was that no one teaches (or no one i ve watched or read about ) basic methods that you can use to map out the things you learn from anatomy and gesture. So i went on and tried every step you showed, and FINALLY everything involving the human figure made sense AND it s simple enough to fill sketchbooks with it... Thank you so much, you ve broken my biggest creative blockade yet and i ll definetly check out your book ! Good shit mate.... good shit.
I just started teaching myself how to draw, and just following along improved how confident my lines looked. An hour a day people, it makes a difference.
Thank you for all the time you put into this and for all the fantastic examples! You make a terrific art teacher because you inspire and make people think we could actually do this! Looking forward to watching your other videos! As a 48 year old woman who was not inspired in my high school art class, I continue to long to illustrate children's Christian books one day, should God let me live long enough! I just bought a bunch of drawing how to books on ebay last night but now see that you have books for sale. I'll keep that in mind come my next paycheck! Keep up the great work! God bless!

You’re an amazing teacher (and artist) and I want to thank you for your first book too. The lessons in your book carry through to my watercolour painting and pencil work as well. So well done. I can only imagine the work involved in publishing a book, and at the risk of sounding really cheeky, I dream of you doing a second book on gesture and mannequin and people in more depth. Forgive my impertinence, but other than Mr. A. Loomis, I’ve not found another teacher that explains this subject so clearly while inspiring me to actually practice your techniques. I’ve been re-watching your gesture and figure lessons, and really appreciate the playlist arrangements and for now, I take notes, diligently. 🙏🎈 Thank you, Mr. Dunn

You are excellent at explaining and demonstrating! Fantastic teacher. One of the best figure drawing videos and teachers I've ever seen in a class or online. I wish I'd had this many year's ago. Thank you for sharing!
Alphonso, there are many who can draw- but not many who can contribute towards giving back decent self-confidence to those of us who aren't naturally talented, nor properly educated in the basics of art and drawing by our so-called art teachers. you, sir, are a Teacher. Keep up the awesome videos and we will continue to practise with ya. Salute! and much thanksss.

I just bought your book. Outstanding stuff. I'm a painter and sculptor and I started after being inspired by a book, tv show etc. Your book has made me excited about ink drawing. Many thanks.

How generous you are Alphonso to take so much time to share your hard earned knowledge and talent with us. Thank you.
+marilyn mango my pleasure : )
Thank you for this video it's very helpful, we have a mannequin that's been slowly becoming part of our office decor for the past year that we need to start putting to use--the insight and tips you provide make the process of learning the human body much less intimidating! 😊
PS My better half was wondering what the pencil is you're using..I thought it may be a sort of drafting type?

Good shit mate.... good shit.
Glad I could help! 🙂
Thank you, thank you, the best tutorial on this subject.
very welcome

I just started teaching myself how to draw, and just following along improved how confident my lines looked. An hour a day people, it makes a difference.

Unbelievable tutorial.
TH-cam at its best.
Thank you for sharing.
you have magical fingers sir :)
God bless!
Love your videos. Would love to see how to abstract figure and face easily.
You teach like knife cutting through butter! Absolutely love it! Hats off!
Loving the new format your videos have, keep the good work man

I did notice all the work you’ve put into your already amazing channel. I’m so grateful to you that you share so freely of your expertise. 🙏🎈
Thank you, Mr. Dunn
you're awesome ... sooo helpful thanks so much
No need to attend my art classes any more ; your there..THANKS a lot for putting a lot of effort this video , my word can never say how happy am I am . Please never stop making videos like this because your the best .
You have very nice finger nails.
every person that i see i have to look at one thing to tell if i like them or not. one of them is fingernails. HE BE LOOKIN NICE I COULD TELL. then other one is noses and eyebrows. THERE JUST SO ATTRACTIVE XDXDXD i hope im not the only one
Alphonso I can't thank you enough for taking the time and effort to make this video. I'm trying to grow my drawing skill and I found this video SO helpful. The Way you explained and articulated was so easy to follow and to understand. I took a drawing class in college but the teacher was completely the opposite with no desire to be there. I learned very little from that one expensive class. I learned a lot from your video in just under 1 hour. Thank you so much. I wish you all the success in the world!
Thanks much and youre very welcome : )
شكراً كثير الك طريقه شرحك كتير حلو وانا مستفيده كتير منك شكراً 😊👍
this might be the best tutorial on youtube to get figure drawing coupled with your anatomy tutorial, observing real life references and a bit of practice i think anyone can get to a pretty realistic result. thanks a lot Alphonso for those free tutorials.
very welcome : )
I ordered your book on pen & ink drawing btw, not much but the least i could do as a 'thanks' for all you freely teached me, also the reviews on it are amazing so i expect to learn even more!
could you do a video on how to draw hands? :)
I'm with you.

Words can't describe how overjoyed I am to have stumbled on your channel. I've been binge watching all the videos. You are an AMAZING teacher! Thank you so much for all your videos.
+Tipsqueak thanks much :-)
*instead i draw on mannequin*
SUPERB, SUPERB, SUPERB - everything about your tutorials.
And THANK YOU for NOT having in the background, distracting and totally unnecessary music.
This is without a doubt the best and the most important tutorial on figure drawing that I've seen in the past years!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!! 🙏🙏💜
Glad it helped 🙏
I've learned more about the figure's proportions for you than in my numerous life drawing classes. I will purchase your book just to support your fine teaching and generosity. Thank you
Thanks so much : )
THANK YOU SO MUCH I ADORE THIS VIDEO PLS NEVER DELETE THIS!!❤
Great tutorial! Very basic steps and doable!!! Thank you, Alphonso!
You are excellent at explaining and demonstrating! Fantastic teacher. One of the best figure drawing videos and teachers I've ever seen in a class or online. I wish I'd had this many year's ago. Thank you for sharing!
thanks much, and youre very welcome
I am going to watch this over and over again. This is the best video and I have watched hundreds of others in the past week. Thank you Alfonso!
I'm so glad you have organized all your videos by category, now I won' have to go looking and put them in order to watch, do and learn. Thank you.
:)
Wow what an amazing teacher. Love love looove how you explain everything. You make it sound so simple and doable.
One of THE best tutorials anywhere!
Thanks much!
THANKS ALOT! THIS WAS A GREAT TUTORIAL! SIMPLE AND USEFUL. YOU ARE A GREAT AND GERNEROUS TEACHER!
Alphonso,
there are many who can draw-
but not many who can contribute towards giving back decent self-confidence to those of us
who aren't naturally talented, nor properly educated in the basics of art and drawing by our so-called art teachers.
you, sir, are a Teacher.
Keep up the awesome videos
and we will continue to practise with ya.
Salute! and much thanksss.
Thanks so much! That means alot : )
I can't tell you how helpful this was! I was intimidated by figure drawing, but not any more .This tutorial showed me an easy way to get the proportions right, that works for more or less all kinds of poses. Just what I needed! Thanks so much!
Glad I could help. The mannequin was a big help for me as well
I just bought your book. Outstanding stuff. I'm a painter and sculptor and I started after being inspired by a book, tv show etc. Your book has made me excited about ink drawing. Many thanks.
Thanks so much for supporting it! I hope it will be a vaulable resource :-)
The proportion breakdown was a tremendous help to me. I would draw mannequins before and would just wing it until it looked right. Now I'm able to get every mannequin to be consistent.
Really appreciate the info!
Clever teachings. I'm surprised you're revealing so clearly most of the processes I do unconsciously, while I draw.
+Xose F. C. :-)
My drawings improved a lot because of this tutorial. I can't thank you enough!
One of the best drawing tutorials I have ever watched
🙂🙏
