Have had these MRI's twice, I have to force myself to stay cool and calm, telling myself, if you do not do it right you have to redo it all again. Cancer is bad enough so the MRI is not as bad. I am as claustrophobic as anything, never get into an elevator unless it is very critical. Walking the stairs is my m.o. During the test I am just counting to a hundred and start again. Wishing everyone the best.
I count to 60 trying to count the minutes! I end up counting to 100 sometimes.. It's not a nice experience.. You end up with pins and needles in your hands from the position your in. But look, isn't it great we have the technology. Had my 2nd breast MRI today with contrast. Anxious throughout. Will definitely get a relaxer if I need another.
I am going to have mine tomorrow. Same, I kept procrastinating coz I have anxiety and very claustrophobic. They told me I can have anti anxiety med before the procedure. Hoping for the best tomorrow. Thankful for this type of informational video, vety helpful as to know what to expect during the test.
This was a really good run through of what to expect! My first MRI I was completely shocked by the IV, length and sounds the machine made it was just so different from my other testing experiences!
I'm 26 years old, stage 1 breast cancer, I had my MRI yesterday! It was...an experience 🥴 I'm glad I was only in that thing for 10 minutes! The sounds were so loud 🥴, incredible technology though 👏
I had this done Wednesday. I almost could not get it done due to my period being two weeks before. They want you to come in near 6 days after you start. They went ahead with it though for me but it is something to keep in mind when you set up one. I can tell you it was nowhere near as scary as my mind made it out to be. The worst part for me was keeping still for the hour it took to do that test in the machine. It was uncomfortable keeping still that long. They will give you headphones and my technician played music for me. I choose country but you can pack any type you want. The machine can get loud but the music helps keep it down and listening helps pass the time. If you do get freaked out all you need to do is squeeze the ball they give you when you go in and they will pull you out. The techniction will also talk trough all they are doing via a speaker and they can hear when you talk as well. Also it is light inside the machines and not dark at all. Just before start of the test do give you an IV like the video said but honestly that was the least uncomfortable part of everything. It is just like when you give blood, you feel a prick of the needle going in and that is. it
Just had this done today. I took a Valium prescribes by my referring doctor an hour before, which made the whole experience a breeze. I’m usually very anxious during things like this. But the pill helped calm my nerves and make the passage of time in there much more bearable. Mine was only about 25 minutes, even though they also told me it would be about 45. I didn’t feel claustrophobic like I thought I would because my face was down, just like in this video. It felt more like being on a chiropractic table. Since I couldn’t see that I was in the tube thing, it didn’t feel like it to me either.
Just had my second one done last night. First one was last year. The noises it made didn't really bother me, it was the quiet moments that unnerved me. That fact that I was face down and couldn't see anhything didn't help. It only lasted 25 minutes though. I was dizzy when I sat up so I just sat there on the bed waiting to regain my equalibrium while I drank some water. Other than that it was ...okay.
I just had this done today and I just had to pray through the noise because it was so loud and shocking. Even with the earplugs, I was still able to hear all of it
No mention of the block of wood that your sternum has to rest on. It’s horribly uncomfortable. The techs don’t want to hear it. Their answer is to trivialize it-“yeah it is a little uncomfortable.” They had me so badly positioned during one MRI that the radiologist could see gall stones.
Thanks so much for posting this. I have to get an MRI w contrast in early June. I Wasn’t aware of the IV having to be placed. Good to know and now I can be prepared and know what to expect! 😊 I don’t think that the noise will affect me… I’ll have some relaxing 😌 chamomile lavender tea before I arrive. 🤗
I’ve just been for a Mri in UK the scanner was a siemans scanner and horrific experience I could not tolerate it. I had to tape cod liver oil capsules to my nipples then this hard foam wedge was put under my ribcage which dug into my ribs and put alot of strain on my lower back as I was not able to lie flat and my arms had to be by my side like in a bob sleigh position and it was sooo hot I felt I could not breathe. Going to view a different scanner this week to see if I can tolerate it. Surely in this day and age these sort of issues should be ironed out? Ps I had the same mri approx 15 years ago in a similar scanner and position as in video and tolerated it well so todays catastrophe was a shock to say the least and I also feel guilty that someone else could have had my appointment who could have tolerated it. When I called the breast team they said it was common that women couldn’t tolerate this scan??
I have to get this done on 6/7/22 im kind of scared but this video helping me a little i know i can do it i may will need help to relax for being in that position that long
Hi, Zaina, thanks for reaching out. While both exams help our doctors diagnose patients, they sometimes serve different functions. We encourage you to ask your doctor why one exam was preferred over the other to help assess your diagnosis. Best wishes to you.
I need this procedure done but because I’m three hundred or more, in a wheelchair and cannot stand or walk and I have a large leg with lymphedema they can’t help me. What else is there for me to do?
Yes...the technician spoke to me and let me know my half way point. My place had a lil window like goggles wen I put my head face down. I could see the technicians head!
I just did this and it was bad. Under neath my boobs like my ribs hurt so bad it was so painful. When I got up I felt like a bus hit me. The loud noises were so loud like traumatizing loud. They didn’t offer music. I almost tapped out a few times but I did it
same here! no food for 4 hours and no drinking 1 hour prior. I tried to have one done yesterday and my anxiety and difficult breathing the scan had to be stopped. I am rescheduled in 2 days with the plan per my MD to try a prescription for xanax. I am going to give it another go to help my Doctor have the best knowledge for my lumpectomy scheduled next week.
You arent all the way in as I thought. Your face down....its much better than lying on your back...it goes fast! I was in for contrast and it was 20 min

This video is not at all like my breast MRI which was three years ago. The technician had my arms straight over my head and not bent like in the video . Plus I was put head first into the tube. My upper body was not elevated like in the video with my arms relaxed a little below my body.. It was horrible. I have a lot of problems with my arms above my head . It was a very, very strained position which was very painful. After just three minutes or so the technician had to stop the process because I was in so much pain. She had me put my arms down next to my side with elbows slightly bent. The tube was so small my elbows ended up raw by the end of the process. I am not a large individual so how are MRI's done with heavy individuals? The woman in the video is heavier than I am. The video is not at all what I experienced.
We're so sorry to hear this, Teresa. If you're an MD Anderson patient, please send us details, including your full name and date of birth, to social@mdanderson.org so we can look into this. Best wishes to you.
They did a test run on me i lasted 15 seconds in the machine and said " Get me out of here i cant do this i cant breath " I was so heart broken i couldnt go threw with it :(
I have to do this again trying not to be scared. I really need to get through this. Doctor said this time the will give me a pill to help me relax. They are telling me I have to be in there 45 minutes which is a long time. If I can’t get through this then I would have to have surgery. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I am so claustrophobic AND I have an anxiety disorder; knowing what to expect is one of the things that is helping me cope.
How did your test go? I keep cancelling because of how scared I am and I can’t tolerate anti anxiety meds

I wish they had and mri that you can stand into and lift up and down

We're glad you found this information helpful, Chelsey. Best wishes to you.
Thank you so much for making this video. I have a lot of anxiety about this procedure and this was really helpful to see what is going to happen.

Thanks for sharing..I go for my breast MRI today...(my ANXIETY is kicking in!) Whew!!
How long do you have to lie still? Does everyone need the IV contrast?

Attempted one today didn't go well. My anxiety wouldn't allow it

Is this better than ultrasound ?

What if you can't extend your arm over your head for any length of time due to rotator cuff injury. Is it possible to keep it at your side?
Hi there, we encourage you to talk to your care team about your specific concerns. Best wishes to you.

I’m claustrophobic but if I close my eyes during the test and imagine being in a beautiful open place I’m fine

I just had a knee MRI and I have clear braces with a metal wire. I was told that my braces would not affect anything
Probably cause they didn't move you all the way in? Just to maybe thighs?
My mother is taking an MRI for breast cancer. I am really scared for the results..
What happened?

I feel claustrophobic just watching this.🤪😫
Me too
Ditto
I am extremely nervous about getting it dine on Monday. Is there another mri machine instead of going all the way into the one on the video?
Hi, Denise,
Since the diagnostic needs of every patient are unique, it's best to ask this question to your care team. Best wishes to you.
You arent all the way in as I thought. Your face down....its much better than lying on your back...it goes fast! I was in for contrast and it was 20 min
Very helpful
