I was warned about claustrophobia before my first scan. No worries, it is a wide open tube that you could get out of at any time. The noises are really loud and really weird but just know that it is only noise. MRIs and CRTs are not anything to worry about, just stay calm and relax. You are not trapped.
I had it done and I was scared to death cause Im Scare of closed spaces specially that small of space. Well I was scared and panicky, came out screaming. Well IWas in a position that I was recomended for another I refuse it!!! Soo Scary!!!!’
@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 I just did my MRI for almost 2 hours today. I did the same. I was calm for some few minutes until my anxiety started to kick in. I really felt my blood rushed and my heart palpitated so fast. I couldn’t breathe until I made a signal that I couldn’t do it. Ufff that was so scary. The second try I just tried to calmed down myself. Thank God I finished those 2 agonizing hours.
@@misakiayuzawa1791 I was rebooked at a different Hospital where they had a Larger Machine, the extra 4 inches made it bearable, and I was in the damn thing less than 15 minutes. They don't make enough 'happy pills' for me to stay in any of them for 2 hrs
I watched this video and read comments prior to my MRI scan and was a bit apprehensive after reading some experiences. I had the scan today and Honestly!! It was like being on a tanning bed! (I don’t use them anymore 😂) the noise wasn’t as loud as I’d expected, I was given noise cancelling headphones. Given a rubber ball thing to hold and press if I needed anything or to get out of the machine. I had a brain scan so had the coil over my face and then rolled into the machine. It’s quite roomy in there and as you should stay still anyway had no need for extra space. I was in my thoughts and closed my eyes the whole time. I Was singing a song in my head and there were some judders and d.d.d.d sounds.. but nothing alarming or uncomfortable at all. It was quite therapeutic to be honest! If you are worried don’t be. It really isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be and I wanted to ease somebody’s anxiety by coming back and leaving this comment. Good luck and don’t worry like I did. It took 20 minutes and before I knew it I was being rolled out and on my way home!
@@christinagreaves7932 that’s kind of you. Thankyou! I didn’t mention that I’m 5ft3 and a size 12.. I’m not skinny and there was room. I won’t embarrass myself by telling you which songs I was singing to myself. Good luck if you are having a scan too! Relax, breath and sing x
I have an MRI scan later this afternoon. I am a little apprehensive but this video and the comments have eased things a bit. I am now more curious than scared.
Not knowing is the worst fear. Can I reassure you that the sound of the machine is not as loud as people suggested. Two. I closed my eyes and just listened to directions from the medical staff. I would never hesitate to have an MRI again. I cannot understand why people fear that miracle machine, it saved my life!

Having had 7 MRI scans in the past 4 months for my cancer, I can honestly say there is nothing to worry about. You always have an emergency button to press but the machine is open at both ends. The machine makes various noises but it is not scary at all. Ear plugs and headphones are given and music is played through them.
Oh you have nothing to worry about I promise. I was terrified when I had my first one but as soon as it was over I said ‘what was all the fuss about’. In terms of the music, this is offered to you - I asked for Radio 1. It drowns out the noises from the scanner as that is loud. You will be absolutely fine, honestly 😊.
i had my first ever mri yesterday, i was absolutely petrified , i reccomend you take something to ease the anxiety if you can, and to wear a blind fold which i did so i don’t see how tight it is inside, it was way easier then i thought .. you can do it!
1:10 I had my first MRI today. It was very stressful since I suffer of anxiety. I felt that it took too long. I could do it because I closed my eyes before entering to the tunnel. I didn’t open my eyes for any second, and I’ve tried to imagine myself in an open and beautiful beach. To the second MRI I asked they give me something to cover my eyes because even though I had my eyes closed I could feel too much light over me. The paper they gave me helped to diffuse the light over my eyes. After the two scans I barely could stand, that was an indication that it was too long, almost an hour, but I did it, hopefully it helps someone this information
I just got an MRI yesterday morning A day before i prayed a lot I must tell i was very scared because of my phobi of small place so i just closed my eyes and waited for 25 minutes The result was slip disc I am in a grear pain actually Hope to recover soon The treatment will begin this coming weej From Mauritius
Had it done today in a small machine for images of my eyes. The waiting to go into the scanner & the radiographer’s repeat questions increased my anxiety but I accept that prep & checks are v. important & necessary. - you don’t want any metal being moved by the magnets particularly if the metal is deliberately placed internally to aid a body function - The bed rose a few inches before going into the machine or at least it did for me. Not tall. The coil had been “locked“ into position over my face and the lower reaches of its frame brushed my clavicle which surprised me. I guess if I wanted I could have pulled the coil off but I want the doctors to see the images more than I wanted to panic and initially I was deeply panicked. Breathing rapidly and being fussy and contemplating a big I’m not doing it!! You need to be still throughout the imaging in a small space. Easily done without deep thought I’m a over-thinker 😊 but I forced myself to stop. The music helped if I focused & really listened but sometimes the machine was so loud the music couldn’t be heard. The longer I was inside the scanner the more confident I was they’d get the images required and these thoughts helped. I did relax eventually as my eyes needed to be closed throughout which encouraged relaxation. and stop me searching for danger. For me it was like being swaddled so the more I relaxed the easier it was to just submit. 20 mins in total - the hardest part was not knowing every single control freak detail of what was about to happen. I’m glad it was successfully completed.
I have had more MRIs of my brain than I count. These were done for the diagnosis and monitoring of my MS. I usually sleep through them in spite of the loud noise. This enables me to lie still during the exam. There have been times that I could not sleep during the exam so I pretend that I am on a battlefield as a soldier during one of the world wars. The noise of the machine seems to match this scenario very well. Try this when you get an MRI done. This should keep your mind off any discomfort you may have during the exam.
I just got out of there, it was a unique experience and I have a phobia of narrow areas, but I tried to imagine many things, then those sounds started as if you were fighting, then I started to imagine that I was in a war with a Kalashnikov, then I started praying, thank God I finished.
I got poisoned by the contratse agent which contains a toxic heavy metal for the M.R.I. Please refuse to receive this metal in your body. Click on my profile I posted the link to the website with more information on the dangers of it to spread awareness.
Few hours back, I have completed my MRI for the first time of my life. Keeping yourself inside of tubular structure with sound surrounded is wired experience. Various sounds from different points is intresting one. Some time felt like head area was shooted by arrows of sound ray. Wondering about technicians who are working daily in these machines. Thank God for knowledge given to mankind to diagnose diseases.
I have my first MRI scan today. I'm nervous but reckon it'll be fine. I'm a sound designer and very excited to hear all the noises the machine makes. I'll check back in after it's done.
Home now. I had to drink the 2L diarrhoea liquid, which was about as much fun as it sounds. Cannula weren't too bad either - I'm used to these now after the year I've had. I told my lot of doctors about how I'm excited to hear the noises, and so when they offered me headphones they said they wouldn't play music so I could hear it all better. The noises were damn cool! Shitting meself and vomiting in hospital were not, though. But all normal reactions. At least I know it's almost all out of me system lol
I have had several MRI’s in my life, my advice is keep your eyes closed and you’ll get thru it fine. Even though the MRI machine is a big donut it can feel very claustrophobic when your inside. Also you can ask for a sedative from your dr to take before exam that will help relax you. You’ll do fine trust me!
Ive just had a head MRI. I suffer with claustrophobia and was very worried beforehand. I read lots of others' experiences the night before and built a fear, but I want to reassure everyone going for a head scan that it was honestly fine. Best piece of advice when you book is to ask for a wide bore scanner. It's bigger so not close to your face. They did put a frame over my head to keep it still but it wasnt enclosed and they positoned a mirror on the top so if you open your eyes you can see that your legs are outside the scanner and you can see the Technician. Mine was only 15 mins and it did go quickly. The sounds are just like being in a rave really, fast beats which speed up. When i closed my eyes i pretended I was just lying on the beach listening to dance music. I thought i would have a panic attack but i was actually very calm because zi could see out. Honestly if I can do it anyone can. It's fine! Good luck
I hope you are on TH-cam often, because my MRI is in 2 days, and I’m losing it. I am extremely claustrophobic, and have been known to run out of dark crowded rooms because I couldn’t handle it. I have 5 nightlights in my bedroom, because darkness is very claustrophobic to me. Please reassure me that it isn’t that bad😢
I just kept imagining my two year old grandson laying next to me taking his nap during my exam and I got through it just fine. That kid could sleep right through a train wreck.
I’ve just been for a prostate MRI in the U.K. It wasn’t too bad. The machine was quite wide, but the radiologist did say that other machines he uses are smaller. There’s not much room above though, but the machine doesn’t have a back to it, so you can see the actual ceiling if you look up and back a bit. So I didn’t feel particularly claustrophobic. I was given ear plugs and headphones. They played music but it was very low and broke up a few times, so it would’ve been better without. The noises are a little strange - it sounds like a spaceship is about to explode in a sci-fi film or something. But all in all the experience was okay and nothing to worry about.
Had my MRI today, definitely isn’t a comfortable experience. Loud and 20mins ends up feeling much longer. My advice is to keep your eyes closed. Also the face mask I had on had on has the little strip of metal across the nose, so she asked me to take it off and gave me another one without it. Just interesting because I wouldn’t of thought of that little piece of metal!
I was dreading mine because I hate them. The tech asked me if I wanted music and I said yes so he asked what I wanted to hear and I replied Dean Martin. That’s Amore
I have trouble having them. I get really bad claustrophobia and many times I get myself out and leave. Now I am having to ask my doctor to arrange some kind of sedation otherwise I cannot have them anymore, even though I had a brain tumor removed 8 weeks ago.😢
Had this done last week. Checking for prostate cancer. I think I may have been sedated. I have a host of health problems. Including very high blood pressure. When the scan was finished I could not get off the table without help. Sat in a chair and was really tired. My whole body felt heavy.
I hope the MRI scan helped diagnose the problem and that you received the appropriate treatment. It's been 11 months since you made this comment, and I want to believe that you have fully recovered. If not, I wish you a speedy recovery!
Had an MRI scan today. The noises aren't as loud as I feared, the headphones muffle the noises pretty good. When the same noise kept repeating for like 2 minutes, it was honestly kinda relaxing. The worst part was actually the silence between the next noise, since you didn't know what to expect. When the scan ended, I was still waiting for a new sound, not realizing I'm already done. I was actually excited for some new noises.
I developed claustrophobia of really tight places after I had my 2nd MRI where I panicked 40 mins into it. I still have flashbacks about the incident. Not fun. See my update in the replies below, maybe it can help someone.
but when I first went I thought it was tight before me trying it I was looking through the window I was in the sitting area and i did walked away then because it looks scary, Then l have to take another appointment then I done it first time that was 4 to 5 year ago and I thought to myself it was a bit ok and I went for my 2nd mri scan today 23 may 2022 and I was still a little bit nervous 😁😁 then when I went in I was ok 😏😏
@@dannydorko7075 yes, it was a brain and neck MRI, so my head goes in first and stays in, then a tight cage is put on top of the head and on the sides, so my head doesn't move at all.
A quick update. I had my 3rd MRI done this week and I've had anxiety for weeks knowing I have to do this again. Did a lot of reading and watched many videos on how to cope with MRI claustrophobia and nothing really helped. I took an oral sedative before the MRI and even that didn't help me relax. As soon as I went in, I panicked and told the tech to pull me out. It's the coil cage that they put over my head that scares me. We chatted for a bit then he suggested we use the mirror attachment that lets you see your feet and the rest of the room, including the control room and the Tech in my case. That was the answer for me, I went in and I had zero fear because I can see the room using the mirror. He said some people don't like the mirror, but in my case, it was the solution. You can bring someone with you and you can see them through the mirror. Also, with the new machines, it took only 20 mins instead of 45 mins on older machines. Good luck everyone.
Feel for those of you that have claustrophobia. However you do receive a panic button and headphones dull the sound, both of which may help. It’s not a fun hour in their and half way though they attached a cannula and added dye before doing it all again. However, the outcome may enable you to stay alive, or at least help you know how long you have so you can get on with fulfilling your bucket list. As I write, it’s 7-10 days for the outcome and I’m hoping beyond all hope it is the former rather than latter. Good luck to anyone else in the same boat.
I'm doing my second on ,for my liver disease! It's so uncomfortable, the technician told me,some people opt out within seconds there! This thing It's very uncomfortable.
Totally agree! The machine is designed to help you. As long as you keep that in mind, it will be a lot easier. Unfortunately for me the scary part was not getting the scan done but the results that came from it. I have got a brain tumor for which I will receive surgery and perhaps chemo/radiation therapy. For now the tumor is malignant but not very agressive, so "good" news so far. I think I will get into this machine alot more in the future. 😉 But again, the machine is an asset and not a liability. Close your eyes and relax and the scan is done before you know it.
I had claustrophobia. I had a moment of anxiety and freaked out but mentally got myself over it. My arms were pinned to my side to it was like I couldn’t escape.
My main problem was the technician forgot to tell me the credit cards in my jean’s pocket could be compromised. Yup! They were rendered useless. Otherwise it’s a great tool to check your health. Turned out my brain wasn’t damaged and I was grateful to know that. God bless all of you and may you get the same results but remember to empty your pockets even if they forget to tell you. 😊
@@sinnbadd278 If you're doing Brain exam it's not necessary to have your jeans removed as the metal parts in pants are far enough from the scanning area & won't cause image distortion
I have been a "Lab rat" in research studies that require MRIs . That is that I am not being treated or evaluated for any condition but researchers are testing the MRI and/or other processes on me. I have found that MRI gurneys are not designed for comfort not as much as they should be. Being in an MRI machine is pure torture. It is not the machine itself but the gurney you have to lie on. The gurneys on the machines are made of hard material and furthermore, the head rest is designed in the most un-ergonomic way considering it is meant to rest your head on. It seems that engineers and designers just do not consider the fact that the back of the human head is shaped in a way so that the "occipital bun" area protrudes fairly similar to one end of a football and it means that the rest of the weight of the head will apply a lot of pressure on that protruding area and if you have to lie perfectly still and not move the "occipital bun" area will hurt like mad after as little as a few minutes and sometimes you have to lie on a MRI gurney for hours. The head rest should be designed so that the back of neck is supported or the neck , while a person is lying down, will be affected by gravity and thus create more of a downward pull on the entire head that is felt on the "occipital" bun protrusion. The head rest of a MRI machine should be designed so that the "occipital bun" area does not touch the head rest at all. The person's head should be tilted with the back of the neck supported so that the back of the head does not rest on any part of the gurney. This would be a better design I believe and I have written to the companies that design MRI gurneys. Maybe some MRI gurney designer will see this. But overall a better idea is to have stand-up MRI machines ( in which you actually sit up rather than lie down for the procedure) in which a person does not have to lie down unless absolutely necessary for the MRI. These kinds of MRIs exist but from what I have observed they are rarely in hospitals or research facilities that use MRIs. They are only in certain "MRI" radiology businesses. In fact I have never seen a "stand up" ("sit down") MRI in any medical facility. Of course it would be very expensive to replace the older MRI machines with newer ones in which people can sit up while getting an MRI done.
Absoloutely agree, people talk about the claustrophobic nature of this exam but to me the worst part is having to stay stick still, at the end of the exam my neck hurt and my shoulders were stiff.
@@ventibreeze6648 same… I had an mri in an upright scanner two days ago and I was so worried my breathing was making me move too much so I was holding myself so tight that my neck became stiff by end of it
My mri test: The 1st part was that they put iv in my arm and causes metalic taste in my mouth and didnt change anything. During the test, my back, buttocks and neck hurts during the test. I was in alot of pain wanting to get up. 2nd part, they put contrast in my arm, and it made me cough, gag and retch a few times. Idk if it was normal or not. Anyways it was almost done. Tips: if your bored while the exam is going, look at the ceiling with your eyes to see if theirs any lines. The lines are colored black to me. And if you look closely, its moving back and forth. Meaning the machine is moving back and forth. So if you see the line moving up, your moving down. Line moving down means your moving up. You can look at the lines for fun if your bored. Just use your eyes though not your head. Think of anything that will put your mind out of the exam and into something fun in your mind. Its hard if your in a lot of pain but yeah. If you need to urinate, put the watery or running waters out of your head. And instead not think about it but think about the exam or the fun things in your mind. Final note: its a very easy test. You just need to lie completely still and the test is very long. So you have to wait. I moved a little because i was in pain.
The only thing I'm worried about is the IV. I hate anything that is stabbed and injecting things into me or taking blood. The contrast sounds awful, I have 0 idea if I'm supposed to have it or not. I'm going in for cardiac stuff...idk if that requires it. Overall I wasn't worried at all until the IV was brought up

@@BeautyforAshes428 I had it about a week ago, they were really accomodating and let me lie down on the machine instead of sitting in that awful chair, gave me a numbing spray, made sure my legs were slightly raided in case I passed out. I get an MRI tomorrow . My first one , They had me laying on my stomach with my hand extended . I was in agony . They were looking for the destruction of melanoma on my thumb . I was in excruciating pain , Shortly after that , I had MRI brain scan where the cancer was found in my brain "Stage 4 " .. Every 3 months I had a scan.. I have seen scanners that offer mirrors so you can watch TV or headphones for music . I guess I get the one that was built in 1912 by The Wright Brothers ,. Belts and pulleys , a coal hopper for fuel and the bed is from Transylvania ,.. I don't get scared , but time does pass slow in that tube . All those noises make it sound like it is malfunctioning and ready to spin apart . I just imagine all the protons in my brain being flipped around . Wondering if the tech is playing Candy Crush behind the screen or went to lunch .
I also laid on my stomach and extended my right hand ✋ they scanning my finger...the sounds are very loud 📢 they gave me headphone 🎧 but it was not like this it was wireless that reduce some sound ....some sounds are like machine gun 🔫 I laughed a little bit but sometimes sound feel very bad I closed my eye then open then thinking when it will complete after some time I wanted to move hand and head it feel little pain but I dont move...they didnt give any panic button, didnt give clothes to change..... I had an MRI recently , my only advise is close your eyes and thing about other things. It's not easy . you may feel like you're going early to grave but take your courage it may only last for 30 minutes.
Ask your doctor for a sedative (Calming) pill 1 hour and a half before you undergo the scan and try to inhale 4 deep breaths , pause 4 seconds , then exhale 4 slow breaths ( It is a Yoga technic ) . Take a towel with you and put it on your eyes . Remember that more than half of the people have a problem with MRI and small tight places , you are not the only one with this fear . You can do it ! I have been there and I was completely terrified the first time . Go for it ! ❤️
Glad I watched this! The MRI doesn’t look as confining as I thought! I remember my father couldn’t lie still and it took forever. I pictured it more like a dark torture chamber, but I’m not claustrophobic just a bit unnerved!
I’m having my first mri tomorrow A bit scared so I’ve booked to see my doctor for a sedative to help 🙏 I have watched so many videos I guess I just want to ensure no matter what that I don’t panic while in there as I just want this scan completed
I had an MRI a few months ago, I was already disoriented before it began. I remember them asking me what type of music I wanted to listen to and I don't remember answering and I was listening to a very fuzzy led zepplin and other classic rock and lots of very loud sounds. For some reason I was seeing my feet while I was looking up (I think?) I think there was a mirror or something. Felt like it went on forever. I believe they injected me too at some point. One of my results said "with contrast"
UPDATE I Cryed in the scanner, has I didnt realise it was going to move up thats when I started to panick abit. I felt like I was going to be crushed. I wish they had told me that while taking the images the scanner would move me up. Has I entered the hospital I saw the scanner and it was a Siemens brand. Like in this video, It moved up about twice. And was going to press panick button twice. Before that the lady spoke to me and asked me if im okay, has she knows im anxious and very claustrophobic. I said im scared. then she said dont worry you will be in scanner for ten mins but il try make it 8mins. But the staff told me dont look down and tilt my head and look the other end. Which helped alot has I could see the opening, I DID IT. Just waiting for my results now. I think if I would have looked down and saw that I was fully in the scanner enclosed and trapped from one end. I would have freaked out again like last time. Just glad I did it now
Question: does the machine only start after you get in it? I saw a video of someone sitting next to the machine talking while it was running and I’ve never had it run until I was completely in, and they stopped machine before I was removed.
I've had 5 MRIs mine was nothing like in the video. My MRIs focused on my spine area only. Results I had 5 spine surgeries in 7years. Hopefully no more.
My second attempt on wedsnesday, im worried i will freak out again. But they said rebooked bigger scanner now. First 1 didnt go in tunnel I panicked just of the thought of going in. I feel really lame that I cried last time
The MRI machine which i took produced a lot of sound. And i kinda feel suffocating inside. I also had a creatinine shot before it and it began to be very painful. I was so tried and restless inside. It was the worst 1hr in my life
I have my very first ever MRI scheduled for this coming Friday. I must admit that I’m not afraid of much. However, this exam terrifies me because I am extremely claustrophobic. My claustrophobia is so bad that even the thought of tight and/or dark spaces raises my anxiety. I pretty much already know that they’re going to have to give me something ahead of time for relaxation. I greatly appreciate everyone in this comment section who’s already had an MRI, giving words of encouragement while sharing y’all’s experience. I do want to ask a question. I’ve heard that when getting an MRI that perfume, deodorant, and lotion are prohibited. Is this accurate?
I made the mistake of closing my eyes from start to finish & had a claustrophobic panic a couple of times (internally) it wasn’t until the end that I saw the top end where your head is was open. Had I seen this in the beginning I would have been a lot calmer.
I had 3 done today, both shoulders and with the face mask. It's not that bad, honestly, just shut your eyes before you go in and hum a few tunes. Noises are a bit strange but it helped me to think that this was some sort of countdown to being over
I had my MRI on 6 - 6-2024 on my shoulder. Thank God it discovered the cause of the severe pain that I had. Tear of the tendon. Surgery was done. I am recovering
My brain doesnt respond well to MRI. John Hopkins did a study and found the strong magnetic waves affect the inner ear and brain. I get strong zaps from the back of my head into my middle back and it causes me to pass out or go into myoclonic jerks. It is AWFUL!

I did an mri recently. It’s not bad! I asked for radio in the headphones but they forgot. I got a mirror so I always looked at my eyes which is better than staring into the white wall. The noises were in my opinion not so terrible, sounded like a drill/modem, just without the white noise. I got a bit sleepy aswell!
I’ve had three MRI’s. Once before my lumbar spinal fusion surgery, and it was a closed MRI. They put a washcloth over my eyes, and hearing protection in my ears. Second was an open MRI, before my lumbar Lamenectomy surgery. Third MRI was open also, and I had head phones where my choice of music was playing. I also had same before the Lamenectomy procedure. I’d already had a hip replacement by the third MRI. I have had several CT scans over the past 20 years. Didn’t have to have an MRI before my 12 hour scoliosis spinal fusion surgery. Just a CT scan. Only thing I had trouble with the MRI’s, is the longest was one hour, and my back hurt so bad, I was about in tears.

@@amoonakooky3437 I’m doing great! My third back surgery was the longest at 12 hours. I have no pain whatsoever, and I can walk, sit, stand now without a walker or cane!
Its not advisable. You need to have a plain X-ray done first to assess it position and how to get rid of it. The MRI has a strong magnetic field which could possibly cause overheating/tissue damage to your neck because of this pin.
@@justaviewer439Generally, an mri scan is widely considered very safe because it generates its image by creating a magnetic field around the body part being examined and has no ionising radiation. It's just like having an ultrasound scan. However, be sure of the strength of the magnet 🧲 and fill the screening questionnaire before you have a scan done. I hope this is helpful?
I did my second Mri yesterday and it was weirdly just as relaxing as the first time. I strangely enjoy the vibrations and some sounds (not the hammer sound of course)
This must be what the wealthy experience….My full body MRI experience did not include leg cushions, headphones, head cover…I had ear plugs, and the table raised up until the very top interior of the tunnel touched my nose and then it let me down until the fine hairs on my nose wasn’t touching anymore..I had to ride the whole duration in a severely claustrophobic nearness to the very top of the tunnel…afterwards I said I’d never do that again…
Omg yes! Mine was not this nice either. I had earplugs and was quite uncomfortable. They didn't really walk me through what was goin to happen or when it was starting so I didn't fix my hair and it was bothering me the whole time. I was too scared to move and fix it. My hands and arms tingled as well. It felt similar to when your arm falls asleep and is waking back up.
I've done this 5 times already. It feels like you're in a coffin... I always think the machine will break and il be stuck in there alive like being buried alive in a coffin
I just had my 2nd brain mri yesterday. I had my first one back in 2020. The one I had yesterday was with the contrast and was maybe 10 minutes longer. Yesterday I wore a sleeping mask and that really made a lot of difference. Both times the mri went fine but I can definitely understand the issue of claustrophobia for many patients. I luckily didn't have that because I kept my eyes closed each time but it was harder to keep them closed the first time without the sleeping mask over the eyes. The only thing is that neither mri scan showed anything of major issues in my brain and I have been suffering from un balanced issues from vertigo in the past. I doubt any of my doctors will schedule any more brain mri. Yes they are loud but ear plugs definitely help with the noise.
@@okabc-ho9xw I am vaccinated but I had my first vertigo episode back in the 2000's but I can't remember the exact year. So while being vaccinated might be a cause, that isn't the case for me. I don't really have any vertigo episodes now but I do have feelings of being off balance in my head and I'm now finding out that mri will not detect the cause of that.
@@vernonson66 ah i see. that's probably not it. have you done any blood tests? i'm having some "hidden" health issues too (has to do with my nerves and what else is going on in my brain) and had my first mri yesterday. hence why i read this comment. and thank you for it, because i was very anxious so this helped. let me know if they find something if you want.
So I was terrified for 3 months to have an MRI on my leg. I went into their largest bore for the claustrophobic people like me lol it’s a slightly larger opening. It was literally so much better than I imagined!! Don’t be scared. Also it wasn’t loud at all with the ear plugs. My head was just out of the machine but I think even if I was inside, I would have been just fine. Just book the wider machine if they have one. Also I thought ahead and dressed without metal And they let me keep my clothes on and just had to put a gown over it. Good luck to anyone who has an MRI coming up! It’s really not that bad!!! I have had worse tests!!
I'm going into this tomorrow morning, I don't have any idea coz it will be my first time to undergo MRI due to pain of my neck down to my shoulder and elbow..hope everything is ok.
Thank you for reaching out please ask your doctor or radiologist to decide which procedure may be helpful in your case. All the best, Your Siemens Heathineers Social Media Team
Most people here shared their experience with MRI that was informativeb ut their MRI was probably without taking any valium or other mild sedative. I have an upcoming MRI and I've been told that if I feel I could be claustrophobic I can take a Valium tablet 5mg an hour before the procedure. So I asked the doctor for a prescription and have the pills now. But I'm thinking of taking 2.5 mg only though still not sure how it will help. Calming me down, or that I'll feel subtle euphoria while still aware of what's going on. If sedation means being asleep so much so that I'm unable to follow the radiologist's instructions, or sleep that sometimes causes twitch or sudden jerk or nod. I do feel a jerk sometimes just as I am about to fall asleep that is early sleep. That kind of experience. If any one of you have had mild sedative pill before your MRI. do share your experience. Thanks

If the contrast agent makes your body feel warm upon entry, you feel the urge to urinate and you have a metallic taste, I don’t think that is normal. Sounds like the body reacting against something that is not good for it.
the contrast contains a heavy metal called gadolinium it is reported often to be highly toxic, but MRI contrast agents are chelated compounds and are considered safe enough to be used in most persons.
I won't ever allow an MRI unless I'm under general anesthesia. I know alot about the MRI scanner my father's best friend at school Sir Peter Mansfield was the main co inventor of the MRI scanner and he nit only was knighted for it but also he got the noble piece prize. He died a few years ago but the Sir Peter Mansfield unit is still working on the MRI scanner at Nottingham university. He was the first person to have an abdominal scan before the case and MRI we know today. This had to be completed as the way we know it now as the USA wanted it urgently
I've a pain in my left shoulder and I am prescribed to get an MRI done. But I've a fixed dental retainer on the back side of my lower teeth. Is it safe for me to enter into an MRI machine ?
As per my knowledge most of the retainers (If not all) are non magnetic, you need to check the retainer material with your dentist first to be safe. However some of them causes distortion in scan images (even if they're not magnetic) so you might need to have a visit to your dentist to remove the retainer in case it caused an image distortion
@@techspartslifestyle2228 stainless steel retainer is safe to enter MRI, the only problem is that it causes metal artifacts in images while scanning orofacial region & artifact could extend to cervical spine region depending on MRI Scanner technology, some MRI scanners have really great metal artifacts suppression techniques. Scanning the shoulder should be OK but we won’t be sure unless we give it a try.
Hiii. I had my MRI scan today. I was so scared but trust me. I PROMISE THERES NOTHING TO BE SCARED OF. Hi alemon22, you will still hear the noise even though you are wearing the headphones. Whether it scares you or not depends on the personal individual. You could take some additional in-ear protection (e.g. Ohropax) to reduce the noise even further. Could you please elaborate on your question with the tooth? We didn't quite understand what you meant. Thank you. Your Siemens Healthineers Social Media Team
I watched a tonne of TH-cam videos on MRI scans to get me prepared as i was anxious about it and that made me more anxious Lol But it really wasn’t that bad i found it quite cool hearing all the different sounds the machine makes kicking back listening to music on the headphones 🤣
Actually, you can ask the technician your concern about this. For the neck part you will probably have to go in head first. If you prefer to go with your feet first for the lower back, you can always address that! They will most likely do it that way. For scanning purposes it's just a matter of adjusting a feet/head first setting on the console. No big deal. I don't know the country you live in, but it's possible that these are going to be two different appoinments.
Had one today, worst part was not moving while it was going on as they did about 6-8 takes over about 45 minutes. Best part is when he asked "what do you want to hear?" I asked "oh? whaddaya got?", he goes "everything" and sure enough, they even had some obscure hard rock which, combined with all the noise from the machine, actually nearly put me to sleep during each segment, lol!
Hi KESSEMIKYADOG, Thank you for reaching out. Please consult with your doctor or radiologist should you have questions concerning your piercing regarding an MRI examination. All the best, Siemens Healthineers
I try and pick a focal point and only look there so I can stay still. I try to synchronize my breathing with the noise of the machine. If they don’t give you ear plugs and the headphones feel free to ask for them. The headphones didn’t help my sensitive ears so I asked for ear plugs and they came and gave them to me.
Why does this video present false information regarding contrast medium given? The feelings described here with contrast medium (warm feeling, metallic taste and increased necessity to urinate) are very characteristic of CT-contrast medium (iohexol) and not very slightest with gadolinium-based contrast given in MRI-setting. Gadolinium based contrast may feel a bit cold as injected contrast is room temperature as compared to average body temperature of human. -MRI technologist
Before contrast is given a certain value is checked that has to do with your kidneys. If the value is not showing a safe number, contrast is less likely to be given. This has to do with the "drainagepower" of your kidneys, because reducing the time contrast is in the body by f.e. drinking a lot after having received contrast is always a goal we want to strive towards to. However in some situations the doctor can still approve it when the doctor thinks it's in the best interest of the patient, but always in communication with the patient.
@@rammohanraonayakula5800 1.7 is already on the higher (not "standard safe") side in regards of contrast (but again up to the doctor and patient to decide together), and contrast itself can increase the creatinine levels. So: - How long after the MRI contrast exam did you test for the creatinine level that got you 2.5? - Did you also talk about this with your doctor? - Have you tested recently as well? - Did you have a recent muscle injury, doing powerlifting and/or taking creatinine supplements to help musclegrowth by any chance right before or after the contrast exam (when you tested 2.5)? It is a good idea to take this information with you for the next exam you get concerning contrast, especially when it's CT contrast. One measure one can take is to drink enough in the few days prior to the actual exam (if contrast is involved), this will help to drive off the contrast asap. But also after having received contrast one should drink a lot of water. (And in case this applies: no creatine supplements/heavy workout a week prior to the contrast exam I think would help as well as it can prevent a false kidney problem.)
These are great. Ive never slept better. And Ive had quite a few. I never had to get changed. The only ones I dont like are the contrast ones. Metallic taste doesn't go away right away. Play some good music and out like a light.
Duration of exam could vary from ~5 mins to ~1h depending on several factors: 1- Specs of MRI Scanner System 2- Exam area (Head, shoulder, knee, Spine, Full body etc...) 3- Exam protocol parameters (Some settings related to Software) 4- The more you move during scan, the more time you stay 5- In some specific exams, the more you breath calmly the less time you stay
I was warned about claustrophobia before my first scan. No worries, it is a wide open tube that you could get out of at any time. Had it done today in a small machine for images of my eyes. The waiting to go into the scanner & the radiographer’s repeat questions increased my anxiety but I accept that prep & checks are v. important & necessary. - you don’t want any metal being moved by the magnets particularly if the metal is deliberately placed internally to aid a body function -
The bed rose a few inches before going into the machine or at least it did for me.
Totally me today! Hated it but wanted to get it done with 😢
I have had more MRIs of my brain than I count.
The battlefield tip is honestly a great tip, gives you something to focus on
I just got out of there, it was a unique experience and I have a phobia of narrow areas, but I tried to imagine many things, then those sounds started as if you were fighting, then I started to imagine that I was in a war with a Kalashnikov, then I started praying, thank God I finished.

Had one wild is the word
Had my MRI today, definitely isn’t a comfortable experience. Loud and 20mins ends up feeling much longer. My advice is to keep your eyes closed. Also the face mask I had on had on has the little strip of metal across the nose, so she asked me to take it off and gave me another one without it. Just interesting because I wouldn’t of thought of that little piece of metal!

However, the outcome may enable you to stay alive, or at least help you know how long you have so you can get on with fulfilling your bucket list. @Mark Hardcastle, How did your results go?
Totally agree! The machine is designed to help you. As long as you keep that in mind, it will be a lot easier. For now the tumor is malignant but not very agressive, so "good" news so far.
I think I will get into this machine alot more in the future. 😉 But again, the machine is an asset and not a liability. Close your eyes and relax and the scan is done before you know it.

I whole-heartedly agree with you! I HATE laying on my back for long periods of time
Well, sleep flat on the floor with a couple of bricks for a pillow for an entire week before the exam. The exam should go easy then
@@ventibreeze6648 same… I had an mri in an upright scanner two days ago and I was so worried my breathing was making me move too much so I was holding myself so tight that my neck became stiff by end of it
Just curious, did you feel warm during your MRI? Like you were heating up? I'll be having my MRI soon, just looking into the risks
My mri test:
The 1st part was that they put iv in my arm and causes metalic taste in my mouth and didnt change anything. During the test, my back, buttocks and neck hurts during the test. I was in alot of pain wanting to get up.
2nd part, they put contrast in my arm, and it made me cough, gag and retch a few times. Idk if it was normal or not. Anyways it was almost done.
Tips:
if your bored while the exam is going, look at the ceiling with your eyes to see if theirs any lines.
Overall I wasn't worried at all until the IV was brought up
@@sav2823 the stuff was so fucking strong that i ended up coughing, gagging and retching alot. But yeah like i said, it was very painful to my back parts so yeah.
@@sav2823 I had one done with the contrast and I barely felt the needle going in. No side effects other than a mild metallic taste that only lasted a few seconds. I kept reading all these awful experiences that people had and was completely freaked out going in but it was really simple. Don’t stress too much. Most likely it will be completely fine.
@@BeautyforAshes428 I had it about a week ago, they were really accomodating and let me lie down on the machine instead of sitting in that awful chair, gave me a numbing spray, made sure my legs were slightly raided in case I passed out. I don't like the thought of some dye going into my veins and organs but all I felt afterwards was dizzy and tired and that was just from the machine itself. Definitely not as bad as I thought, I didn't even taste or smell jt
@@sav2823 That’s awesome that they were so accommodating. They didn’t even ask me what I wanted lol but I was already laying down and couldn’t see anything because I had the cage thing over my head. That was helpful since I didn’t actually see any needles or anything.

Probably. I had one recently for lumbar spine and it was feet first. My head was still outside the machine.
I had to stop mine a week ago..mask and in a closed MRI was way to much for me
Ask your doctor for a sedative (Calming) pill 1 hour and a half before you undergo the scan and try to inhale 4 deep breaths , pause 4 seconds , then exhale 4 slow breaths ( It is a Yoga technic ) . Take a towel with you and put it on your eyes . Remember that more than half of the people have a problem with MRI and small tight places , you are not the only one with this fear . You can do it ! I have been there and I was completely terrified the first time . Go for it ! ❤️
Oh and have someone to drive you forth and back while you are still a bit sedated . Do not drive yourself.
Me too. And no sedative will help me either, more like anesthesia.
And they will give you a button to push and stop the procedure !
Nope has to be open one
Glad I watched this! The MRI doesn’t look as confining as I thought! I remember my father couldn’t lie still and it took forever. I pictured it more like a dark torture chamber, but I’m not claustrophobic just a bit unnerved!
Can you get an MRI with tattoo or period? I'm having my schedule next month
Even if the sound of an automobile can be reduced through silencer can't the MRI machine sound be reduced which was really very alarming.
how long after an mri do you get the results
I’m having my first mri tomorrow
A bit scared so I’ve booked to see my doctor for a sedative to help 🙏 I have watched so many videos I guess I just want to ensure no matter what that I don’t panic while in there as I just want this scan completed
I’m getting one 2 weeks from now.
I am a little nervous about the loud noises, but I’m sure it’ll be fine.
How long is a standard exam?
Just glad I did it now
My experience in MRI was anxiety, anxiety and anxiety.
Yes
That is what i am afraid of. I am very claustrophobic and have high anxiety
How many people feel ok taking valium or something. Or does that make it worse as one can't hear the instructions
I’m super claustrophobic :(, is it bad ?
Hope your'e doing fine
How long does it typically take?
My second attempt on wedsnesday, im worried i will freak out again. But they said rebooked bigger scanner now. First 1 didnt go in tunnel I panicked just of the thought of going in. I feel really lame that I cried last time
My Dr never called back about sedative. I am claustrophobic.
What kind og MRI did they order?
My brain doesnt respond well to MRI. John Hopkins did a study and found the strong magnetic waves affect the inner ear and brain. I get strong zaps from the back of my head into my middle back and it causes me to pass out or go into myoclonic jerks. It is AWFUL!

I have stapler pin stuck in my throat. Is MRI safe for me?
Its not advisable. You need to have a plain X-ray done first to assess it position and how to get rid of it. The MRI has a strong magnetic field which could possibly cause overheating/tissue damage to your neck because of this pin.
Yes if your having an mri of your foot
@@samchike1 is mri safe?

Yes they are loud but ear plugs definitely help with the noise.
are you vaccinated? that may cause vertigo
@@okabc-ho9xw I am vaccinated but I had my first vertigo episode back in the 2000's but I can't remember the exact year. So while being vaccinated might be a cause, that isn't the case for me. what about fetus MRI, how long can take and how was your experience if you had any? I have tomorrow mine for the first time🙈
Examination duration???

What is contained in the contrast substance? Is it toxic?
How loud is this procedure and what possible damage to your hearing is possible?
If the contrast agent makes your body feel warm upon entry, you feel the urge to urinate and you have a metallic taste, I don’t think that is normal. Sounds like the body reacting against something that is not good for it.
the contrast contains a heavy metal called gadolinium it is reported often to be highly toxic, but MRI contrast agents are chelated compounds and are considered safe enough to be used in most persons.

I need an mri for my neck and lower back will I go head first ?
Actually, you can ask the technician your concern about this. For the neck part you will probably have to go in head first. If you prefer to go with your feet first for the lower back, you can always address that! They will most likely do it that way.
For scanning purposes it's just a matter of adjusting a feet/head first setting on the console. No big deal.
I don't know the country you live in, but it's possible that these are going to be two different appoinments.

I have an MRI coming up to look at my liver, will my head be going through the machine as well?
Why does this video present false information regarding contrast medium given? The feelings described here with contrast medium (warm feeling, metallic taste and increased necessity to urinate) are very characteristic of CT-contrast medium (iohexol) and not very slightest with gadolinium-based contrast given in MRI-setting. Gadolinium based contrast may feel a bit cold as injected contrast is room temperature as compared to average body temperature of human. -MRI technologist
Will contrast dye spoil kidneys
Before contrast is given a certain value is checked that has to do with your kidneys. If the value is not showing a safe number, contrast is less likely to be given. This has to do with the "drainagepower" of your kidneys, because reducing the time contrast is in the body by f.e. drinking a lot after having received contrast is always a goal we want to strive towards to.
However in some situations the doctor can still approve it when the doctor thinks it's in the best interest of the patient, but always in communication with the patient.
@@Rain-Dirt My creatine level was 1.7 before contrast but raised to 2.5 after MRI contrast
@@rammohanraonayakula5800 1.7 is already on the higher (not "standard safe") side in regards of contrast (but again up to the doctor and patient to decide together), and contrast itself can increase the creatinine levels. So:
- How long after the MRI contrast exam did you test for the creatinine level that got you 2.5?
I came to this video already knowing what to expect since I have had such scans. I had no problem with it.
These are great. Ive never slept better. And Ive had quite a few. I never had to get changed. The only ones I dont like are the contrast ones. Metallic taste doesn't go away right away. Play some good music and out like a light.

1- Specs of MRI Scanner System
2- Exam area (Head, shoulder, knee, Spine, Full body etc...)
3- Exam protocol parameters (Some settings related to Software)
4- The more you move during scan, the more time you stay
