  • For Toyota SUV;s ad minivans equipped with a rear heater core, the plastic tee that splits the coolant flow becomes brittle with age and can fail with catastrophic consequences: complete loss of coolant and overheat. This is a big problem on any engine, but on a 2AZ-FE that is susceptible to the head lift issue, it is even worse. In this video we show the broken plastic tee and the area of the head lift on a 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE in a Toyota Highlander equipped with third row seat. This issue affects any Toyota SUV or minivan equipped with third row seat, including Toyota Highlander and Toyota Sienna and Toyota RAV4. It can affect all engines including 2GR-FE 2AZ-FE 1MZ-FE 3MZ-FE engines and potentially others.
    Watch this video to see what an actual head lift looks like.

    hey this is Frank this is a 2005 Toyota Highlander with a 2azfe 2.4 L engine this car is in the shop because the engine overheated the overheat was severe and it caused the head to lift so right here right above the transmission is where the head lifted and you can still see the oil that came out the cause of the overheat was this plastic T that connects the rear heater core to the heater hoses from the engine and branches them off from the heater core in the front of the cabin this $15 part cost this customer an entire engine this potential catastrophic issue of this plastic te affects a wide range of Toyota vehicles that have a rear mounted heater core this includes uh Toyota Highlanders with a third row seat it includes Lexus RX uh 330 and 350 it includes Toyota Sienna minivans and possibly other vehicles any vehicle that has the rear mount heater core for the passengers is suscept able to this issue these are the two heater hoses you can see the plastic te that has broke versus the one that is not broken if this plastic piece breaks then the coolant will leak out under pressure very rapidly and because it is back near the firewall then what happens is it does not come in contact with the hot engine and the driver will not see any steam coming out so by the time that they realize what's going on unless they're monitoring their temperature gauge very closely it's too late and particularly on this 2az FE engine which is susceptible to the headlift problem the engine is done for once it's overheats thank you for watching this video I hope it alerts you to a very important issue that could be affecting your car so please do take it seriously and check whether you have these hoses present for the rear heater core and if you do then replace the plastic pieces with new ones that are less likely to fail

    You Sir, are doing TH-cam the right way. Get to the point without wasting time. Tell it. Show it. Fix it. Old school teaching. Thanks

    Very informative this is why I sub to your channel. I got Rav4 2gr-fe w/ 3rd seat. You think it's ok to by-pass it with brass straight? I'm not using 3rd seat I might even take it out.

      Yes, definitely, bypass it, fewer places to leak.

      BTW thanks for your informative reply, I have never seen a RAV4 with this option, now I know they exist!

      @@Merryfrankster_ I'm not sure if it has rear heater core. Will look at it now that I saw your video. But Rav4, 3.5 w/ 3rd role seat is quite rare I didn't even know it until I got the car...'07 Limited. I'm not driving it fast because I want to make it last forever. It also build in Japan which I really like.

    Good evening Mr. Frankster, I have a 2008 3.5 and I've ordered the all metal oil line of the part number you put in the description of that video, I noticed the inside diameter of the banjo on the valve cover end of the line is larger than the old rubber elbow line. So the union bolt moves around much more in the new line, and I can see the crush washers seem a little small for it. Have you noticed this yourself? I'm concerned if it's not centered just perfect it may leak. Thanks for all the great videos!

      I have never noticed it but if you want to try to address this just order a different banjo. All the threads on the engine side are the same. The seal is achieved by the crush washers - as long as they are secure, the fit of the bolt inside the eye does not really matter. The bolt and eye are designed to allow flow of oil between them - from the eye into the gap and from there into the opening of the banjo and out the front of the banjo into the valve cover. If the fit between the bolt and the eye is too tight, then oil will not flow. Why] are you posting this comment in a totally unrelated video?

      By the way, what year and model is your car? I will look into any potential differences in banjo bolt size and report back in case it is necessary to purchase a banjo bolt that matches the eye more closely.

    I have a 2008 Highlander with the 2GRFE engine and 3rd row. Is this T easy to get at/visible? Thanks for the video!

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The T's should be visible if you look down behind the air intake tube or underneath it. To get at the T's you do need to remove the air intake tube and the airbox.

    Plastic T being used by Toyota in their coolant systems? WTF? Are they trying to be more like BMW?😆

      They could also be emulating Ford, or NIssan.
