    Kenny, most scanners - if the model number ends in BT - it is wireless. It is a BlueTooth scanner - BT...

    The best YT for fixing weird problems that other shops can not fix is 'Diagnose Dan'. He uses the scope to interrogate what is being sent across the modules, and explains the process very very well.
    You can learn a lot from this guy, another level up from Kenny.

    When you showed the scan tool graphing the O2 sensors, the readings were exactly what you should expect. This is another really good example of open and closed loop operation. When the motor was cold and the scan tool showed the downstream O2 sensors graphing the same as the ones upstream, its supposed to be that way. Those readings were not of the downstream sensors. They were copies of the front. When the vehicle is in open loop, the downstream sensors are ignored until they reach operating temperature.
    You won't get accurate readings of the O2 sensors and cats when they're cold. If the O2 sensors are not bypassed, you would get a check engine light every time you start the car. When the PCM dropped into closed loop, the graphs changed because it was now taking data from the downstream sensors. That's why you saw such a big difference in the waveform.

    A lot of manu's didn't have an aactual o2 specific code for a long time, and would throw the cat code. Good mechanics will always watch o2 activity before replacing cats. Good on you sir.

    Kenny, I wish you had gotten deeper into the causes of P0420/P0430. It's not always a bad Cats or O2 sensors. There's incorrect reporting of a MAF Sensor, vacuum leak, lean fuel trims and even possible fuel injectors. It would be nice you explain how to test for each.

    • @AT-wl9yq
      @AT-wl9yq 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don't test for lean fuel trims. Fuel trims that are too lean or rich are the result of something else being wrong. The PCM takes the data it receives from all of the components you listed, and more, and uses it to calculate fuel trims. As for learning more, there's too much information to go over in a video. If you get a book or video on basic OBD2 theory and operation, it will answer all your questions on this topic. You may also want to look into getting the factory workshop manual for your vehicle. Each brand is a little different, but its not uncommon for the workshop manual to list step by step diag instructions for specific symptoms and DTC's. You'll need it anyway for things like torque specs, so its always a good investment.

    Very good video Kenny, I like how smaller companies are making good products to go against truck brands. I have bought truck brand tools as well as harbor freight and other companies.

    Your definition of what the scan tool is the same as what a scope does. A lab scope is basically a multimeter that refreshes and graphs the results. The difference is where you are taking the measurements. With a scope, you read data that the scope measures directly, and with your scan tool, you are reading data as seen by the PCM.
    Its also worth noting that some scan tools have scope functions built in. I can do things like relative compression and power balance tests right from my scan tool without even popping the hood. If you do a lot of diagnostic work, these features save a lot of time.

    Here in AUS we are limited by the local now non existant manufacture of vehicles so I ended up with a Topdon Maxiscan I think(not near it ) so I don't know the exact one but it covers all AUS built vehicles as well as all the ones on that Launch it is wireless & updateable via wi-fi my only gripe with it is the screen is a bit small however for $500 aud it is great as a DIYer scanner (I have 1 GM 1 AUS GM & a Nissan works on all three.) Cheers mate.

    My chevy pickup had messed up cats, I couldn’t justify the $1200 for the replacements so straight pipes were installed in their place, the cat code would continue to show as the rear O2 were reporting the conversion was not occuring - I installed some standoffs on the rear O2’s (hollowed out spark plug anti foulers stuffed with ss wool) - now it works fine, exhaust has a nice growl to it now without those confounded cats.

      @@mckinleygoetz9855You just have to be smart about it. You don't always need to buy expensive tools, and sometimes you do. However, if you are going to buy high end tools, I would stick with SnapOn if possible. Matco doesn't make tools. Every tool they sell is made by another company. The only thing Matco makes is tool boxes. Nothing else. In recent years, Mac has done nothing but shoot themselves in the foot every chance they get. A lot of they're stuff is heavily market up Chinese junk. They really are Mac and Decker. They still make some things, but check before you buy anything from them to make sure its not re-branded junk. SnapOn is still the best of the 3. They have slipped a little, but nothing like the other 2.
      Just an example of a good way to save some money is to do something like this. You need a good set of metric 3/8 sockets. Buy SnapOn short and deep 6 point sockets. Then buy cheap sets of 12 point and fractional sockets. That way you have coverage, without spending a fortune on sockets you'll seldom use.

    99% of the time a tech tells me he is going to try O2 sensors to fix a P0420 or P0430 the vehicle needs a catalytic converter. Of course you can just expose them to fuel induced rich mixture and then an air induced lean and watch them swing to see if they work.
