I've got an S63 doing valve stem seals. Valve covers removed. Spark plugs out, injectors out, holes plugged. Began turning the engine (clockwise from the front) and it turned smooth until it reached a hard stop. Looks like it as almost full open on exhaust on cyl 1, almost full open intake cyl 3. Quite puzzling . . . as if valves were hitting or something jamming the chain. Engine was running before teardown. Before pulling more stuff off to get to chain, any thoughts?
I have a question, if the times between the intake and exhaust shafts do not match, is it enough to change the vanos screws? and if I change the bolts, do I have to remove the vanos? do I just unscrew the screws on the lock, replace, set nm and angle and that's it? thank you greetings
Thank you very much.... Interesting watch and very useful. I have a question.. I'm being offered a non-running BMW 650 2012 with n63 engine. The timing chain failed with the car out of warranty. I'm trying to make an educated guess. Do you think the pistons/valves are bent/damaged? What are the chances? I have done several N43 and N13 and in all cases there was no severe damage. New chain, tensioner and guides and all was back to normal. I would appreciate and value your opinion or anyone else with some knowledge.
What are the hours needed to have this repair done both sides- BMW looking for crazy money to repair my 2011 X6 50i 100k miles- Saying 60 hours for the repair- repair is for chains and actuators- I'm shocked-- I should put in a new engine for what they want- looking for guidance on this repair - help appreciated`
It's not an installation. The chain is already in. My question is for a complete chain installation, call it replacement, can you do it with the engine still in the car? I feel not...
This video should be titled "Removing and installing camshaft phaser adjusters", Timing chain installation is a bit more complicated and daunting task on the N63 engine which has 2 timing chains for bank 1 and bank 2.
hey body show up with the engine in the car and see if you can do one single valve stem, engine remover yes very easy, engine in the car is impossible to replace valve stems in hole 3,4,7,8 at intake side
It is not a chain installation video. No chain was replaced nor installed. This is just a timing job. To replace/install the chains, u need to remove the timing cover. To remove timing cover, u need to remove cylinder heads (or risk oil leaking at head gaskets when done) AND upper oil pan (or risking oil leaking later). Stupid N63 design and they make the timing chain guides BRITTLE after 100K or so, making this engine cost prohibited to repair.
Video has nothing to do with replacement of timing chains ? Good for setting cam timing tho PS that’s not a crankshaft stop tool it’s a timing tool if you use it to hold crank to do anything else you will damage the timing cover and the tool cliff note from a certified factory trained BMW HEAVY LINE TECH
What a nightmare, the N62 and N63 are garbage and this job will have to be done again in 40,000 miles. High priced vehicles, extremely cheap quality parts.
What makes this priced at $700+ and 10 times more than what I can find on Amazon? If it is precision, I can see the crank locking tool and the 2 cam locking tools MIGHT have extra play that this AGA might not. I checked my $70 amazon pieces and did not see any play. Please explain to me why I should spend 10 times more. Please don't tell me just because it is better made.
Hi, i have the same problem, and fault code about Vanos system and not reaching the desired position, have done the work twice, with new Vanos pulleys installed... And the same. Thinking about problem in ECU if just may need programming. Which was your solution? Thanks!
Very informative, thank you for taking the time to explain details that aren’t apparent in the documentation!
Video should be called Vanos installation and not timing chain.

did you ever figure this out? currently have the exact same issue
Top mechanics top German technology the best in the world 👍👏👏👏👏👏
You can't really get it rong with timming pins and locking pins easy with the equipment and engine out simple 😉 when you know how
Guys carefully, you set the camshaft retainer from the release to the intake and from intake to release! For the rest thank you so much! ))

Exelent thank you.
Nice work shop.
Ilumination ... i like it..
Does one have to repeat same procedure for bank 2?

What did they quote you?
We are about to do this same repair soon!
Good clear no bull shit video !
It's not an installation. The chain is already in. My question is for a complete chain installation, call it replacement, can you do it with the engine still in the car? I feel not...
No, you have to remove almost everything from the engine.
I have a noice coming from engine n63 .. can't figure out what it is sounds like the timing chain loose 😢
Anyone know if the cam sprocket gear have any markings it needs to line up to before tightening down? Or they just go on how ever?
Thanks for this video it is very useful ☺
This is awesome video
i swear he said not to rotate the engine backwards, then he went and did it
yes, but due to vanos system pistons did not even move.
Like in don’t go full rotation backwards. After the cams are locked you can move the crank a couple mm backwards.
How many degrees did he do counterclockwise ? That's just enough to get the tensioner pressed and not to turn 720 degrees.
Tnx for the lesson. I think I need to share with u whatever little I will have in July. Is 30 dollars OK for u as a matter if thanks bro?
Полезная инфа .

You installed the cam holders on the wrong side, it said exhaust on the tool on the intake cam
I noticed timing chain replacement was never actually shown 😮
I did exactly as pointed out in the video but now I have a no start. Vehicle is rolling over free as if no compression. Any ideas?
Kenton Roker your tensioners was free and you your valve is banded
hey body show up with the engine in the car and see if you can do one single valve stem, engine remover yes very easy, engine in the car is impossible to replace valve stems in hole 3,4,7,8 at intake side
Why nobody is not showing exectly change a Chain ? Its upper side but lower side is interesting
This man is a doctor.
Very good
You placed the exhaust and intake holding tool reversely in this video.
thank you sir

I love you video send to thanks
Dude.... please label correctly. This has nothing to do with timing chain installation. NOTHING.
What a nightmare, the N62 and N63 are garbage and this job will have to be done again in 40,000 miles. High priced vehicles, extremely cheap quality parts.
The N63TU doesn’t have this problem only the earlier ones…
Your an idiot

Umm this is not a timing chain install video... not once do you remove or even talk about the chain.
Video is mislabeled since your not doing the timing chain.
Vasinos nieet markings
Why can't every car have a turbo 2jz plenty of power easy to work on, unlike this engine
I did exactly what he said and the car runs like shit!!!!. Any one can help plz

Hi
the chain tensioner doesnt have racheting mechanism? bmw is garbage
