Very instructive, indeed. I am from Europe and I know this system very well and was never fooled! It can be used to lift water over the ridge making a canal, but the discharge must be lower than the surface in the river. In that setting a moderate barrel can be practical to prime/start the siphon effect. If you find an other way to fill it, you may just use a stiff tube and no barrel at all. A lot of videos are fake just as you are showing. Such a siphon can never be used to lift water up and out of a well. To ad a few point to your analysis: there is often a bell-sound at about one minute into the video. All testing is done by patting everything. One must play with the water, clean hands, splash it around, „fall“ into the river getting wet. In some later videos you add a nice looking lady….
