I encountered this kind of thing twice. The first time I heard a whole flock of crows whipping up all kinds of commotion, I didn't pay a lot of attention to it, not until finally went to see what was going on. A mother duck who was completely in distress had just lost her whole flock when I could've stopped it. I learned something that day.
A few years later I noticed a lot of crows up in the high trees I was walking by and noticed how that same commotion was going on. It dawned on me what I had seen a few years earlier. I stopped, looked around the low cover and discovered a mother duck looking at me quaking for some kind of assistance it seems.
Paying closer attention she had about ten ducklings behind her hidden in the brush and the crows were ready to go on full attack if I had kept going. I kid you not, I waved at her to follow me, she turned back to her ducklings seeming to instruct them, and then she started to follow me, with all little ones behind her.
This was in Lincoln Park Chicago next to the zoo and I knew exactly where she wanted to go. The lagoon in that part of the park and so we marched. First was the task of getting them across the parks inner road. I had to stop a couple of busses to make way. Then there were some stairs to get down and over and finally around a construction fence around the lagoon that was currently being completely redesigned into a more natural setting for such creatures.
Well I found a small hole in the fence for them and they all scooted through that hole and began plunging into the water, which was a much safer and natural environment for them. Ducks usually have to leave the water and hatch the eggs into hidden areas and once the hatchlings are complete she has to get them back to water which is always treacherous. And then there are things like large fish who also like to take a duckling here and there.
At least I was able to give something back to nature that day. Hopefully they all made it to adulthood.

I saw something similar to this when I was a student. A pair of ducks had chosen the quadrangle to raise their ducklings- wisely enough in some respects, as it was the one area outdoors on campus other than the roof to which foxes had no access and also it had a fountain to teach them to swim- but they hadn't accounted for crows. There was a particular crow that would keep appearing and he would look away, as this one is doing, as though pretending to lose interest and then the mother duck would run and he would close in and pick off whichever duckling was lagging behind. He would also only take two hops away if he was charged at, as he was too big to be frightened off completely. I recall there were magpies as well and they'd work as a team, with one flying away if the mother duck charged at it and the other one closing in and picking off a duckling while she was distracted. Eventually all of them were eaten, but fortunately the father came back and they had another brood almost immediately and of these at least two did survive.
To judge from this footage, this mother looks more experienced than the one I saw, as she seems to know not to run from the crow.

Many years ago, I lived in a garden apartment building. Under the building, a mother duck made a nest to lay and hatch a healthy brood of ducklings.
There were two guys in the building who owned a giant orange cat named Fang. The name was a joke. Fang was friendly to people, but was scared to death of any other animal.
So one day the mother duck was taking her babies for a walk. Fang was also out for a walk. He was coming up the walkway to the building, not really paying attention to what was going on until he crossed the line of baby ducks. There were ducklings to the left of him. There were ducklings to the right. And Fang went into a panic. He was afraid of the baby ducks. Fang was a disgrace to all cats everywhere.

Their intelligence is even comparable to dolphins. And crows are the only animals ever to solve problems (problems they would have never have faced outside of a laboratory setting mind you) without using trial-and-error method. Something even dolphins and chimpanzees employ.

What you say is true. Once a crow has seen a person with a rifle and what it can do, they'll flee if you point one at them. Even pointing a broomstick at them would make them fly off because they remember that rifle. They have great memory and great curiosity about things. I think it's amazing how when you see a group of them, there's always one not close to the others looking over things, and when that one sees potential danger it will start cawing to warn the others to get out of there.

    • @georgebaker8577

Eddie D - I'm sorry but a mother duck is not dangerous to a crow. Usually all a mother duck can do is get her ducklings behind her and spread her wings to try and protect her ducklings. If a hawk finds her family, mama duck is no match for a hawk. It will swoop in and carry a duckling off one by one.
Everyone needs to remember wildlife is in a city because man has built so much that wildlife loses more and more of their habitat. They deserve a little help from us. Nesting, food, water & shelter can be provided without socializing the wildlife. Some wildlife does get used to us if they come year after year to the same habitat and realize the human is not going to bother them.l have some ducks and birds that return every year. Other birds and animals that stay because they do not migrate and the area is good for them all year long.

I live near a river in Nottinghamshire, UK, and one day I saw two baby ducklings who had apparently lost their mother. The ducklings ran together over a wide grassy area towards the river but one was taken by a crow. The other made it to the river and because they bond with the first adult they see, it saw some ducks on the far side of the river and the little thing paddled across valiantly against the tide. I couldn’t see whether it had made it or not but it was heart wrenching to watch.

I think it has more so to do with animal bonds. For example, we, like all animals, have closer bonds with certain species over others, like dogs and horses, over snakes and spiders.
The other reason why humans might be reluctant to intervene and help a snake or a spider is because they are poisonous so naturally it makes sense to keep a distance from these animals.
Nothing to do with ducks being "cute".

    • @ianbrown_777
      @ianbrown_777 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

+Venger True about bonds I guess but we are definitely biased towards cuteness. The more fluffy, cute and big-eyed something is, the more we will like it and vice versa - quintessential prejudice.

Crows are a mix between Engineers and The Mafia. They are extremely smart, and can figure out complex things easily, they can memorize individual faces, your home and your car. They regularly play games of espionage with their food with a series of decoys and fake outs when storing food for any possible on lookers. When they learn a new trick they teach other crows this trick, they gossip, if you are nice to the, you have made a friend of the The Family, but mess with one of them and they will give all the information they have on you to every crow that will listen and they will mob you on sight, they hold grudges.

I agree w/ some of you here. Don't interfere with nature. i don't think i need to make it clear that this isn't the same as watching someone be mugged or beat up. I learned my lesson when I attempted to help a bird being attacked by a hawk. Hawk dropped the bird, but it was injured and died. So, the bird died and the hawk went hungry. Neither one won. That's why I no longer fuck with nature. Now, rescuing injured animals is completely different and I am for that.

Some times you get to witness incredible things in nature - I follow eagles (Bald Eagles and White-Bellied Sea Eagles) through live feeds. A few months ago, a Pacific Black Duck laid her eggs on a White-Bellied Sea Eagles nest. It was off season, but the eagles (especially the male) chanced to visit the nest a few times. They were puzzled by the eggs but they left them alone - the male eagle even guarded them and areated the nest a bit. Every time the duck had to leave for feeding, she would cover the eggs first, but two ravens spotted the bits of white and took them all! I know crows and ravens have to live too, but I don't like them at all! The ravens can be right rascals - one distracts the owner of the nest and leads them on a chase, the other is ready to jump in and steal eggs or chicks!

In a city if you have a yard or property you can be classified as a certified wildlife habitat if you provide water, shelter, food, nesting areas. Use only organics and try to grow what normally would be found in your state.
I planted specific trees, fruit, flowers, milkweed, put in a pond and have other water features. Birdhouses and natural nesting areas. To sit in an area with birds and other wildlife is so good for mental health. Just listening and observing.

I had NO IDEA that Crows attacked baby ducks! Wow!
And you've got the incident in video!!
After all of my decades as a member of The Audobon Society this is the first I've ever known about this!!
    Again, thank-you!

Thanks for the video. Good to see people still take time out from their busy lives to film the nature. :)
