“My supports don’t heal me in lower ranks” I can say this is also an effect of the health pack sombra game style, people are too used to it supports will just think you are about to dip out anyways
the only way i can ever hope to change that perception is by brute force propaganda.

As someone whos relatively new to Overwatch (Only played for like 1-2 months). Ive been wanting to main Sombra for a while, however, the "throw the translocator at a health-pack" play style never really stuck with me.
After seeing this video, I was a little skeptical as I've never seen a sombra played like this, but after trying it for myself, I must say this play style is *wayyy* more fun! I cant believe I never thought of it. Great video!

After this vid i picked up Sombra, played a couple of games basically without healthpack runs at all, and oh god, i didn't have that much fun with a DPS character since when i only started playing the game. Something I noticed, I was playing mystery heroes with friends right after going through Awkward's Tracer u2gm, and his advice really applies almost 1-to-1 with Sombra. Offangle, uptime, isolated targets. Not throwing your tp to a far away healthpack lets you keep that whole strategy up faaaar more, and getting way more value.
Ye, they do occupy a similar niche. Lots of Widowmaker tips apply to Ashe in the same way
although mystery heroes is like the one mode where hacking a health pack is super advantageous since you never know when your team or the enemy team will have a support or not so playing around health packs is a must lmao

i explicitly put that in the video to show that yes, i understand that sometimes you don't get healed. But that doesn't take away from the fact that that means you should be more independent. Sometimes letting out a deep sigh in frustration after dying is just better than fundimentally being more inefficient as a player.

Honestly top tier video, I used to main sombra like this back in the day, when hacking health packs was a thing, I later transitioned into support with ma boi Zen, and havent really wanted to play DPS with Sombra until this video popped up 10/10 work and fantastic explanation

Do you think it can be worthwhile to hack the occasional key health pack if the enemy is running something like Ball? Of course I don't mean putting translocator on the health pack, though.

The main takeaway of the video should be that hacking healthpacks at this point has turned into a gimmick for Sombra-- you can totally have an active reason to do so though. It's all about weighing the pros and cons of having to cover your bases for what could happen in a match. Healthpacks only deny the enemy team value if they at any point try grabbing it for example-- otherwise it's wasted time

Well you handsome Questron you did it. Since the moment I saw Sombra ''playstile'' I always thought of it as annoying, toxic and a pain to play with and against. Still do. But after watching the way you manage the character, i can say that you genially make me gave this character a chance. It is like something just ''click'' while watching you zoom in and out without running away like a coward and actually sticking to your team. Getting those kills and value from your technical skills and knowledge from the game and mechanics. Love your content.

Definitely a lot to think about. I think you showed how it is definitely in your interest as a sombra player to explore more options. That being said health pack running is probably at worst a break even play in most scenarios. A mixture of both is definitely optimal.

I believe Fitzy was saying something along this line all the way back in 2018. "Put your tl on a highground, as close to a fight as possible, first. Only if that isn't an option, then you put it on a healthpack".

@@Questron01 ow... Sad then. I tried your approach today - never usually camp healthpacks but never use tl proactively either. And what do you know, i killed 1.5 more people than dpses in my gold lobby then backcapped the payload in the last five seconds xD Definitely had much more fun than usual.

I feel like a possible consept (depends on how the match is being played) is that if there is nobody around fighting around the objective, you could hack the hp packs since your hack would be back before they get to said objective and it could cut off them from any possible collection of extra health early fight

I vaguely remember seeing this idea in another video. I do see the merits of the playstyle this encourages. I would guess people think that the cooldown of her translocator is well suited to the heath pack camping style and the speed boost on cloak makes returning to the fight quicker, and the loss aversion makes people play more defensively when it can lead to very few actual deaths in a match. I would think that if you want to hack a health pack, it should be one that is near the enemy team, not for yourself to use it (though that can be a perk if your fight takes place right next to it) but to keep the enemy from getting health at a critical moment as you whittle them down over time. I don't see much reason to actively avoid hacking a health pack when you are 4 seconds or more away from a fight, but placing the translocator on it cuts your uptime down so much. Placing it on nearby high ground is so much more impactful.
I thought the same about Sym's older teleporter, back when it had an infinite duration. Syms would just put the entrance by spawn and the exit some 30 meters closer to the point, so the team can trickle in all the faster. It was boring and unimpactful. Using it to get free high ground for you and your team or cut past chokepoints and sightlines was so much better, but even now I see syn's use it to get themselves (and teammates at the start of a round) a little closer to the fight when spawning in and never thinking to use it again. Use the ability to stay in the fight longer, not just when there is no fight nearby.
When I saw the wall of text I thought to myself "ah hell here we go" but no this is all very based and you are very cool

I usually try to avoid using health packs because I want to keep my support ult charge up, but using the translocator next to the fight is something I haven’t done. I just throw it out of the fight but still kind of close
My biggest pet peeve is when sombra players hack several health packs and spend every tp hacking all of their health packs before getting back into the fight for 2 seconds
Good to know someone else also plays like me. It's mote funnier just tp around them over and over again when they think you just leaving but you're behind their back. Sadly at the same time i rarely getting healed :D

While as a Sombra main I agree with the sentiment here that a lot of Sombra players are way too passive, I also can't help but feel like rank did play at least a partial role in some of these instances. For example, the first clip of going in on the Ana after the Doomfist leaves, no nade, no sleepdart, nothing, just pure panic and dead. Now maybe they were both on cooldown, maybe you were even keeping track outside the scope of the clip, but the fact that it's used as an "example" so to speak means I can't in good faith just ignore that without pointing out that what normally happens in those scenarios is getting the Ana low only to have them self-nade and/or sleep dart and force you out because Sombra's DPS is still DOGSHIT without constant headshots. Another example would be the Mercy on Circuit Royal, multiple times I saw you go in on one of her teammates and obliterate their dome and they'd never get a shred of healing despite Mercy being right there. Instead she was busy damage boosting a Sig who wasn't even fighting yet. These kinds of instances are what makes this playstyle a little unrealistic in practicality most of the time, because again, if someone actually does receive virtually any amount of healing odds are you lose that DPS contest unless they just miss everything.
At the end of the day, the problem is that Blizzard keeps nerfing not just the healthpacks but EVERYTHING about Sombra on repeat basically any time she gets even a lick of viability. Winning duels really has become a matter of needing your target completely isolated, not at all supported by their team, getting the jump on them, and in many cases needing them to perform poorly or for yourself to perform FLAWLESSLY just to scrape 1 kill out and I think that's the primary driving force for why everyone gets stuck in the healthpack loop, because Blizzard doesn't want her to be able to do anything without requiring triple the effort (or luck) for the same payoff. Like obviously your tracking is really good and that makes a huge difference in fights, but for exactly that reason it would probably be easier and just as beneficial to the team to put that tracking on something like Soldier, Ashe, etc.
Now all that negativity aside, I think you could take this aggressive Sombra idea one step further and adapt it into a hybrid playstyle that utilizes both ideas by taking advantage of the background cooldown for translocator where hacking the healthpack and having the translocator on it IS still the default, but it is just that, default, and then being much more aware of your situation and adapting your placement as the fight evolves so you have a safety net if you get immediately caught in a bad situation but if you see an opportunity to be aggressive with it, you can then pop your translocator and immediately have it back up to use in-fight since the cooldown should already have passed unless you're getting into the fight again within 5s of moving to the healthpack, at which point the issue of not being in the fight to go to it becomes mostly null. It would be another layer of micromanagement mid-fight but with a good enough muscle memory to be conscious of when you have a translocator out already and popping it before you try to throw a new one it could really expand your options even more just like you were saying.
That's a lot of words, but the whole point of this is that what I say applies to all ranks-- I play like this on main. Doing this removes the excuse that I can only play like this in high ranks because I get to trust my supports or something. This is the closest I can get to proving that that's a wrong take. Watch any of my other videos where I still play like this in top 100 lobbies
@@Questron01 I know, I'm not trying to discredit your skill or even say that playing like this can't work in higher ranks, I'm just saying those particular clips more showcased a lack of awareness on the supports that probably could've countered those specific instances. I don't know if you read the rest but I did also make a suggestion on how to take the idea further.

health packs are things that heal you i think, not too sure tho so i could be wrong, best not to try out in case they deal damage :)
