    Great video! I too have quail, mine are in a 10x10 aviary made out of a tent like gazebo. Just a heads up on the sand, the 30 mesh sand is more fine than the play sand. Play sand is 20 mesh and the same thing used is sandboxes for children and guaranteed safe by Quikrete. All sand has silica in it but stay away from bags marked silica sand.

    This looks like an awesome set-up! The only suggestion I would make is just a couple little hiding places (could be as simple as a cardboard box with a hole on each side so they can sit inside, but get out if they need to) I'll definitely keep the big dog kennel idea in mind if I even have room for it though, pretty smart.

    This is an awesome video. I'm now subscribed.
    Obviously, based on the comments, there's a whole lot of quail people out there, myself included.
    I would love to have a roundtable with all of us, and discuss the ins and outs, ups and downs, positive and negatives, and all the way arounds regarding quail experiences.
    There's so much we could all learn from each other.
    Your enclosure is beautiful.
    P. S.
    In my humble opinion, you should put something on your About page; step further out of your comfort zone, allow others to love and support you.
    You're doing an amazing job.
    Thanks for sharing.

    I’m just about to build my coop and it will be my first time raising quail. Love that idea for the hanging cages and being able to use that for the babies. I’m definitely going to use that idea! Just a great setup from the looks of it that you have. Thank you for sharing!

    This is one of the best ground coops I've seen for quail! I love the idea of repurposing a standing-height kennel like this. Everything else I've seen online for quail have been either small hutches, 3' tall ground coops, or full-on 2x4 custom builds that cost a lot in material. Have your quail laid any eggs yet?

      Thank you so much! Being able to stand in the coop makes things easy for sure! The quail are consistently laying. They always lay their eggs in the soft sand.

    Ohh that’s nice to se that they got so much space❤️. You should put some small plants in there as well and some different levels for them. Making a little jungle for them would be super. But nice you have stones in there that is great👍🏻

    Great job! I'm always looking at other peoples coop/run designs for ideas. I update my coop and run designs over time to deal with issues that come up. I have a design now the allows me to use coops for quail or chickens. I am a small farm but, I breed chickens and quail for eggs andeat after they are finished egg production. Sorry, I don't have any recent videos....... My computer is out of date.... I can't upload at this time.

    Cool tour!! I've been considering building a walk in aviary to house some Valley Quail I'll be getting this week and this pushed me over the edge!! I love the design and it feels like its own little space in your yard. How are your birds doing now?

    Thank you for the great video. How do you manage the quails in summer and winter? Are they staying outside all time? What is temperature range is OK for them? Do you need any nests for them? Sorry for lots of questions :)

    What do you think of beach sand for dust baths? Also what do you think of pine shavings for bedding ?

    Nice set up.😁 I was thinking of using a used dog kennel for quail or chicken run. What's the sq footage of your run? Would you do a softer bedding for your quail?

    Great setup. Id if not used zip ties tho as they break after a year or so better off using plastic wire then can twist tie on.

    Nice setup! How are your quails doing? Would love to see an update. Also can you do a video on how you clean? This seems to be much better than the pine shaving bedding where you have to remove everything each cleaning.

    • @closequartersfarm6484
      @closequartersfarm6484  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks! I actually sold my quail (and my house) and moved to North Idaho. I plan on starting up again once settled. Cleaning was really easy; I just swept into a pile once a day and then sifted it with a metal veggie/fruit colander I found at Walmart. Then I'd compost the waste and redistribute the sand mix in the enclosure. Having a very light layer of it on the ground made sweeping really easy, as no droppings stuck the hardpacked dirt floor.

  • @sivapragassam8268
    @sivapragassam8268 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was a great idea.. I would prefer to do the same concept.. quails can move with freely.. the eggs were hatch with mother’s support or you keep it in incubator..

    • @closequartersfarm6484
      @closequartersfarm6484  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only had a few hens go broody, but they'd lose interest in sitting on the eggs by about day five unfortunately. I've heard of some people's coturnix quail following thru all the way to hatching, but it's uncommon. Also, unless you isolate a hen and her clutch, the other hens continue to lay their eggs in the same spot as hers, so you'd need to mark the eggs in the original clutch (starting on the first day she starts sitting on them) and remove each new one.

    nice setup , they are definitly much happier on the ground rather then wire cages ... I'm building a setup like this , maybe more with wood shavings because I have lots of that ... what do you do with the stuff you sweep up ?

    • @katiec527
      @katiec527 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing that can keep rats and mouses away from there is to get guinea pigs, rats are afraid of them, specially from theyr noise, my grandparents got them, and put them with the chickens and the rars never went for the birds or the eggs ever again!
