You know, the biggest tell for me that the MC is an entity not entirely human is that there wasn't any food in the house. They live there, but they had to use the groups emergency supplies when cooking for them. If the MC knew that flooding was ought to happen, then there would be a pretty solid back stock of food, if this wasn't a magical type thing. If they were human, they would have actual food. Since they're not, they're just waiting for their next prey, waiting for the "flood".
Edit - Also, to support the Baba Yaga thing. When fighting Karin and only talking to the Chompettes results in an instant kill on Karin, that goes along with the mythos of Baba Yaga. Apparently Baba Yaga has invisible servants that you're not allowed to ask about or else she'll kill you. Karin kept asking.
I know I'm super duper late, but one of the notes is from 1794 so maybe they are really REALLY old or sumthin. I'm not sure tbh.
When Karin was locked in the basement and the MC basically just sleeps all day and did the math that Karin must be dead by now.
Sure, she starved down there, but there isn't any food upstairs either....
Also the fact that you never need to eat in the days following locking karin in the basement showing that you are not in need of food the way the others are, and the many references to the different stories of baba yaga in the dreams.

The most surprising thing we found out in this episode is that we have arthritis.
I think this is a clue to say the MC is Baba Yaga, people with arthritis need to avoid red meat because its components are inflammants.
But instead you say you supposedly need red meat constantly because of your arthritis.
Would explain why we never really killed anyone directly (except for Karin and maybe chompettes though I'm still confused about them.)
@@sunbeames I'm pretty sure the chompettes were past victims
@@browhattheactualfu-2659 I definitely get that vibe, though did we kill them directly? For example there's some implications that potato were also on board on eating everyone, so maybe potato did all of the murdering, and then when we were the only ones left, we could have killed purely out of self defense. By that point we could have been corrupted by "the hunger" motivating us to continue beyond that incident.
@@sunbeames This is just me theorizing but I think this situation happened with the chompettes. Potato was similar to Karin but the protg killed her in the basement which is why she hides there during hide and seek. I'm assuming the kill order went cabbage, onion, bread, raspberry and potato with cornbread or Razeal was let go as the dialouge told us. I only got the order from their hiding spots. Maybe they're haunting us like the new group is but just in a different way? Idk but thats my two cents on it

Manly never noticed that the note under the tub was from 1792
Umm... ackshully _sweat-tay_ it was 1794 🤓
I think the note is about Potato, not you. The note under the tub and the newspaper. I think the other notes are about you though.

" I found a mouse...How's that for a big breakfast?"
I think it’s more the squirrel was never actually there honestly it was a playful addition to his character. But when things got serious it vanished as it also never shows in any of his spooky or undead looks as well.
@@fishhunter2491 From the concept art, it seems the squirrel would’ve played a bigger role in the story. Imagine if it started talking just to really drive in the point everyone’s been going mad, heh.
36:52 Its interesting how the game is based from the Baba Yaga tale.
From what I read, when the Baba yaga asks "Did you come here on your own free will or were you sent?"
You're suppose to answer: "Largely on my own free will and twice as much by compulsion."
This would satisfy the Baba yaga and she'll lead you to the right way, saving your life. If you pick either answer to the question, she'll eat you. So yea you're suppose to give a neutral answer apparently
Kind'a reminds me of the Slit-Mouthed Woman myth where you're meant to avoid calling her either beautiful or, you know, the opposite.
There's also another way to trick her into not eating you, saying stuff like, before you eat me, at least feed me, give me something to drink, prepare for me a steam bath and put me to sleep
As far as I remember, all of those steps stem from some sort of sepulchral rites, but I can't be too sure right now
@@marcusdaloia2974 ye, kuchisake-onna is another cryptid that features challenges to dualistic thinking

Here’s some references for those who aren’t obsessed with cultural fairy tales like I am:
Karin - Spot on allusion to Vasilisa the Beautiful and Vasilisa the Wise. She survives her encounter with Baba Yaga by talking to the mice inhabiting her home. The famous wood engravings of her look EXACTLY like Karin.
Mariah - Marya Morevna, the Warrior Princess who tells Ivan not to enter the basement of her home (Koschei the evil magician is chained there.) She could also be Maryushka who is turned into a Firebird by Koschei the evil sorcerer because she refused to leave her village.
Anatoly - The Blind Knight from the story of The Blind Knight and The Legless Knight. Before he is blinded and becomes an adept forest hermit, he asks The Legless Knight to help him with a riddle in order to trick a princess into marrying him.
Gregor - The Legless Knight from the tale The Blind Knight and The Legless Knight. Before he gets his legs chopped off by Ivan and thrown into the forest to die before being saved by his former mentee The Blind Knight, he becomes a mentor to a prince (said Blind Knight) saves his life multiple times from sorcery and is overall wise and educated. Title includes “of the Oak.”
Protagonist - An amalgamation of Baba Yaga/Koschei/Ivan Tsarevitch (?). Implied to have been Ivan Tsarevitch, a heroic figure of light who often uses his wits and various birds (the Firebird in particular) to escape evil magic, but ends up being more like Baba Yaga, a known cannibal witch, and Koschei the Deathless who menaces young women with magic. Koschei is killed by being burnt alive. Ivan is married to both Vasilisa and Marya in different stories.
There’s also a Russian story where a princess cuts off part of her thigh to feed a bird in order to escape a dragon in a dungeon so there’s actually a bunch more references tbh 🤣
EDIT: Revisited this game and can’t help but write down my theory of events. I think that the plot line is basically a giant tragedy where all characters end up failing to complete their main roles literally and figuratively. The protagonist (once Prince Ivan, now Koschei) along with his friends (the chompettes and Cornbread) were kidnapped by Potato (a serial killer) long ago. The protagonist cannibalized Cornbread/the Firebird (corn is often used to summon said bird in many myths) which gave them the strength to overthrow Potato and kill his friends, becoming his successor of sorts and gaining special abilities. HOWEVER the current cast stumbles upon his cabin and they remind him of his past. Karin becomes his possible successor as he had been to Potato (the heroine becomes the villain Baba Yaga so to speak, gets locked in the basement too, etc.) Ultimately the protagonist must face his demons and how he became who he is. Like how Baba Yaga’s skull lantern turns Vasilisa/Karin’s evil stepfamily to ash, I believe that the (immortal) protagonist is “put out of his misery” once they turn the basement light on (burnt to death like Koschei.) Just my thoughts btw!
Bro this is so interesting ty!

@@darkgalaxyangel in that case all is forgiven. Thank you for this change in perspective
I think one of the theories I've liked is that you're not literally a Baba Yaga entity, but a person possessed by one or something similar to one. One of the things the Chompettes bring up is that they wonder if Karin would treat them better and one of the implications is that if she killed you, then she would gain control over the cabin.
There is the answer to "where are you" and if you answer "hell" the chompettes will be "no silly. Hell is in earth."
Makes me wonder if the cabin is not literally its own dimension like the Blair witch cabin.
My best guess is that the protagonist is just a cannibal that is schizophrenic from a far off area in the woods, that has a high chance of losing "yourself" when in reality people just often find the cabin and the rest is the plot.
@@rafaelneumann8365 Baba Yaga has a dimension hopping hut so...yeah that checks out. Also all the references to her make me wonder if you aren't playing a victim yourself that simply had a moment and got her first thus replacing her. Maybe Potato is her? The way Potato gets you to become a slasher and get you out of the cabin, the "my knife" statement. Potato could have been her.
@@ped3752 the weird thing is though, is that after you defeat Karin for the first time, you head back upstairs and they are all alive again, letting you see how they arrived. Unless I got this entirely wrong.
@@emtrac7898 I think that's either a hallucination or a flashback.
OK SO-
1. protag seems to be a supernatural entity, based on the Baba Yaga
> "bony" appearance + riddle confirms this
> can curse victims with the "hunger", can probably control the weather as well to trap victims
> "generations" and the old notes we find implies protag has lived for a long, looooong time, far longer than a normal human
> protag seems to be addicted to what they're doing, it's basically become a habit
2. The Chompettes
> they're the previous victims who protag had a deeper connection with, their existence relies on the protag's
> they cannot move on until protag lets go ("will you... let us go?" "when you let go of me all those years ago")
> this is evidenced by how only Karin turns into one of the Chompettes (Turnip)
> it's possible only the protag can see and hear the Chompettes as they are, as they're present during the Karin fight and Karin says "are you talking to yourself again?!"
> perhaps protag had a familial relationship with the OG 5 Chompettes (Raspberry, Bread, Cornbread, Cabbage, Onion), presumably living with them for years until the "hunger" and addiction took over
> OG Chompettes may have already been close prior to meeting the protag, Bread and Cornbread (Razael is Onion's sibling) weren't related but it seems they had a sibling-like relationship
> as to how they were butchered, I'm guessing Potato was starved to death (then stewed?) in the basement, Raspberry was baked in the oven, Cornbread, Bread and Onion was stewed (based on the recipe + "most of us were stewed in that cauldron"), Cabbage was sliced (eaten raw?)
3. Potato is a cannibal like protag, and was killed by protag (EDIT: may or may not have been a cannibal but most definitely a murderer)
> though they're a cannibal like protag, even they are disgusted by protag's actions
> they may have attacked the other Chompettes so this pushed protag over the edge
> it's implied they were killed and butchered by their own knife
> they might've been a meticulous (and smart?) killer since they were a butcher and knew the human body quite well
4. The cabin is special
> it has its own rules, like it's its own space
> the haunting only stays in the cabin because it's the victims' graveyard
> it's implied that if protag were defeated by Karin, she would take over instead, presumably continuing the cycle
I mostly agree with everything, except Potato being cannibal. I think he is murderer that was mentioned in that newspaper, the connection being the victim's body in potato sack. He is not opposed to killing but he is not interested in eating victims, that's why he is disgusted by protag's cannibalism.
Ah yes the lore
Well, i will only add that it (story) seems to be located in Poland, so i would look into slavic mythology
@@TheShut1 That actually makes more sense. But we are making each point from an individual scrap of information so hard to precisely say but your explanation does make the most sense
we need more horror games where our protag is a weird extradimensional mysterious being doing weird stuff with badass attitude.
Oh, in the nightmare mode theres a secret if you spam "run" enough it says "im not scared" and you get a scene with a girl calling you "Ma'am" and arresting you, which means the protag is a woman and not a man as i initially assumed for some reason, which backs up the Baba Yaga thing.
If it's a girl then that one ending with Karin means..MC is a lesbian?
@@notlol1 the rumour comes out, Does Baba Yaga is Gay?
@@ngreen6436 😳
I got the immediate sense we were female but as it became clearer and clearer we were a hag, it seemed more and more obvious the joke/Karin joins us ending was a lesbian ending. It also seems to suggest if we'd died, Karin would have taken over as the hag and been worse than us, perhaps suggesting the real magic is in the cabin.
Perhaps the reason you thought the protagonist was male was because they lift up the toilet *seat* and not just the lid when they go to pee?

eh, the only really striking artwork was when they looked dead and decayed and were speaking to MC. The anatomy is all wrong in most scenes, and its pretty generic low budget RPGmaker stuff going on.
Not to say that the art is bad, but maybe your taste is really generic and not very trained lol. Gregor's dead face was literally some minor details and the exact same expression. The only thing indicating he died other than the dialogue was the slightly more blue colouring around the eyes and the blended irises. To call that "SO GOOD" is just weird to me. I was kinda sad that Mariah was just a throw-away character, I like her design a lot. Very cute, but I guess it made sense for her to get cut off for the setup that it was going for.
But all in all, this was a pretty enjoyable VN horror game.
I agree, would have loved to see more of her :(
Sameee, felt like danganronpa 3
In Danganronpa literally any likeable character is immediately cut off
A vegetarian like her couldn't have progressed farther than she did during the game. She wouldn't have eaten the meat, whether or not she knew it was human. The story NEEDED to get rid of her early for that reason.
...Not that I would've minded seeing a psychological horror ending where you slowly watch her succumb to craving meat, and her self-disgust surrounding that, eating it, throwing up more than Anatoly lol, going mad, etc. Some really extreme stuff.
(Said as a pescatarian myself.)
think of it this way: unlike the others, she never lost her humanity. she was the only one to not succumb to the hunger.
mariah was _literally_ too precious for this world.
I think I speak for all of us when I say: WHY CAN'T you get a happy marriage ending with Mariah/Anatoly/Greggory??? I mean c'mon. If KARIN of all of them gets one, then those sweet cinnamon rolls deserve to live longer as well!
karin's was a non-canon joke ending and, regardless of that fact, it seemed like karin caught on pretty quickly to the main character's plan/always knew she had to eat her friends to survive. she had no qualms about eating meat or where her friends went, save for that one time she requested to not know where it came from (but she learned anyways).
even if you max out hearts with everyone, the main character doesn't stop anyone from leaving.
The main character is 200-year-old supernatural cannibal whose supernatural abilities stem from "inheriting" the cabin by eating/killing its previous owner... I think there might be a slight incompatibility with the others.

Gregor's design looks like there's tourniquets wrapped around his arms and legs, and considering what happened to him in the end....
I can't remember what they're called, but they're not tourniquets. They're a fashion accessory for keeping your shirt sleeves up. They were popular in the mid/late 1800s and early 1900s. You right though, that just makes it way worse in context.

@@rafasr0 yeah and it is specifically Brazilian portuguese , i am still confused
@@rafasr0 maybe he was one of the MC's victims too
@@Anna-r4d5e I am kind of confused by the "Estás com frio?" because the majority of Brazilian use "Está" not "Estás", so I thought it could be a ghost of a Portuguese man down in the basement.
Or they are from the Brazilian south where they use this grammar or they are a really old victim from the 19th century.
Another thing:
When on the Karin route, the end is that she got ill and perished while the protagonist seems to prevail, maybe adding to the theme that the protagonist is no normal person and lives longer.
Anyway, thank you for the work of showing every possible ending, giving the opportunity to watch or rewatch them.
After you lock Karin in the basement, that whole section was incredibly fascinating from a horror perspective. The talks of hauntings, constant sleepwalking, and nightmares. I really liked that section.
So, a short summary of the plot:
The Chompettes are the spirits of the main character's last victims. It is implied that their appearance is either a curse by MC or that they take it because they have given up on the scare tactics and are trying to be annoying now.
The new victims are refugees running from Ukraine during the famine. Each has its own story related to hunger. Karin is implied to already have eaten human flesh. They got to the cabin by accident and they were pretending it was just a fun trip to ease tensions.
The cabin seems to trap the spirits of its victims within and be an entity all by itself. Especially the really, really deep basement where it outright confuses it's victims and there is a hole to hell(?) The main character seems to not be the owner of the cabin, just its current occupier.
The MC himself is very, very knowledgeable about spirits and isn't phased a lot by their antics, knowing almost all of them. Either by his time with the Chompettes or possibly prior knowledge. It is implied potato was the previous owner of the cabin. And the MC and the other Chompettes were going to be it's victims. From here on it is speculation: the MC killed off potato but he injured the others. They get trapped in the cabin and eventually they have to eat Potato. Then MC is the one most affected by the hunger and the first one he kills to feed on is Razael/Cornbread, who was a child and Onion's little brother. Then he kills and eats the rest in the same room potato tries to kill them.
That's a very interesting theory
Potato being the first killer and MC being one of the passing victims who ended up being a killer too actually makes a lot of sense. The Chompettes were too compliant and helpful to him than they're supposed to be, so it makes sense that he was a previous friend.
Is possible that Potato was the eldest Baba Yaga, MC is the middle sibling and Karing is the youngest. Hence why the MC looks old and know about cannibalism, have those "weird" and mentiones that the group answer is incorrect following "The Maiden Tsar" story
@@sofiacardozo4146 I don't think so, since I doubt the story is meant to be incestuous.

Apparently the main character is Baba Yaga from what I read in the comments
He ate more nutritious food longer than Karin did
Or...you can say...MC IS *MONSTER* haha....
"Human"
That stuff is going on in his head. The parts where you dont even get into a fight and easily overpower Karin is what really happens.
Something to notice is that the word "butcher" is used as a proper noun, as if it's not just about people who carve human meat. It's like it's specifically coded for whatever Potato, Karin, and the MC are on a more specific level. I'm fairly certain that "butchers" aren't entirely human, especially if the MC was able to start and maintain the flood supernaturally.
I don't know if MC started or maintained the flood, but they definitely took advantage of it.

And the DLC Mariah ending where she abadon vegetarianism to trick MC
Man, of all people I feel the worst for Gregor, holy shit. Cant there exist a way to save him??? This game is amazing but it certainly is one of the most cruel games I've seen in a long time.

This game had a really interesting story. I like how it revisits the opening conversation and explains why that whole interaction felt so weird and awkward. They did a really good job of conveying that uneasy feeling at the start without being too obvious.
This is such a surreal game. All the way to the end (and throughout all the ends) it's clear that the game is meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek and never takes itself TOO seriously, but when it goes into the horror and the grim elements it goes pretty hard.

I saw in the first video someone mentioned how raspberry's dialogue suggested that you have some control over the rain. The way the ending where you leave mentions the rain following you adds to the theory...
Based on the info Potato etc. gave it sounds like you inherited the title of Baba Yaga after killing the former holder, Potato, cursing you to be the new one. Chompettes are like your old friends you "ate" along the way.
If anything is an SCP, it's the house itself. You are just its subtype or offspring and related phenomenon. I am sure the foundation would be thrilled to come over for dinner.
Bro Imagine The SCP Foundation use the corect answer to Baba Yaga's question and they just come to chill with her, ask her questions and study the basement ghosts while also providing her with D-class meat so she wouldn't kill innocent people anymore (+ they would obviously set up a perimeter around her place and drive normal people away under the guys of a nature preservation site or something.
You know, I think the main character is sort of a living personification of starvation. He's existed for many, many years, just like the concept of starvation has. Starvation ravages the world, killing familes, friends, cities, countries, which. Kills more than any war crime, which is mentioned that the MC did. How it pulls desperation out of people, and turns them into ravenous monsters. Hence the others said that the MC "gave them" this hunger that drove them mad. This makes even more sense when you consider all the connections the story has to Ukraine, which had a horrendous famine take place in 1932 (called the "Holodomor"). Shockingly horrendous amounts of cannibalism took place at the time with people even eating members of their own families (very literally *Cooking Companions* of theirs), while others resorted to outright murder. It's actually an extremely terrifying subject.
So a wendigo? Maybe a skinwalker? Wenidgo is the obvious choice, but skinwalkers where also former humans fallen to a taboo act. Cannibalism CAN be that taboo act, but usually its misuse of medicine magick or a taboo ritual involving a group of people- the distortions of the faces COULD be beginnning of transformation- whether skinwalker or wendigos. And while its easy to sway away this theory as its native american mythos im naming, suprising there these two creatures arent unique to native america and many cultures that have medicine magick involving the parts of animals- namely skin and fur have also stories warning of shapeshifters that dabble in the taboo-
@@enderwalkgang They mention Baba Yaga several times. Maybe in this world Baba Yaga is a man?
@@Logamer-tn6db or maybe the entity of the baba yaga takes possession of those who survive the starving?
@@enderwalkgang this is slavic so slavic legends would be more fitting than north american idigenous people's legends. Like people said, there is a lot of references to baba yaga with a few being the description of the main character, how the hut is in a forest that seems to be trapped in a sudden unending storm, the riddle question the main character asks them that they answer wrongly to, how the main character seemingly has been there for generations, how seemingly no one visits the hut unless they're absolutely desperate gives idea that there rumors about the hut being bad, and finally the chompettes even give the suggestion that the main character might actually be using magic and not just being insane as baba yaga is a witch or often 3 witch sisters.
But instead of baba yaga I think he might actually be Koshchei Bessmertnyi who is often seen as the male counter part to baba yaga while also being their brother. He's often depicted as being nice and friendly at first, helping you with your problems when you first meet him, but gradually over time turning more and more malovent till he causes everyone's death either directly or indirectly. He is known to be a wild man who lives in the woods as well, and isn't capable of dying due to hiding his soul in an object which again points to the chompettes. He could be shoving the souls of his previous victims into magically embued foods to force them into a state of undeath just like he would ask baba yaga to do on occasion.

Guardian of the fountain of life? Maybe that's along the lines of what the MC told Potato when asking MC how they are seemingly immortal.
@@Death_Gremlin It varies a bit by the exact story. She's more commonly a witch than ogre, lives in a hut with chicken feet, and can either help the protagonist (usually after the protag answering some questions right or doing a task/puzzle) or cooks and eats people.

I did some research when you said that it was the Baba Yaga question at the end and the protagonist from that same story the question appears in, The Maiden Tsar, is called Ivan. Earlier when Gregory was dying, he tried to "say your name" but only got out I.. A.. N".
I also saw that Karin's outfit is the same outfit the character Vasilisa wears in 'Vasilisa the Beautiful and Baba Yaga'. It's cool to see the developers referencing Slavic folk and fairytales like this! ^^
Small Edit: 'Razael' could be a different way of spelling 'Raziel', which means 'The secret of God'. Considering he only appears in the super secret ending, I'd say that's a pretty fitting name!
I thought that the main character was a personification of the wendigo plague. But this theory makes much more sense, or who knows the game could draw inspiration form a bit of both who knows
@@abanana2258 Wendigo is north america folk lore. The slavic countries probably have something similar though. Looks like there is a myth called Likho on wikipedia which is a evil spirit with some similar stories to the dreams shown

I actually think the generic art style serves as a nice contrast to the horror stuff later on, like it undermines your expectations and makes you think it’s just a happy-go-lucky visual novel until stuff goes south
@@terrizoop3739 I don't disagree with you, it does lead to a good twist! But it's really just not my cup of tea. :-)
I was surprised the developers went so dark with this visual novel. I was half expecting that it would be one of those desperate survivor type of horror story with a golden "everyone lives" ending, but it turns out MUCH darker & makes more sense on subsequent playthroughs. Also, I'm pretty sure the developers are vegans given that the non-gruesome recipes are vegan dishes. I can't help thinking that this visual novel is partly symbolic of their feelings on eating meat as well.
Huh, one or more of the developers being vegan would explain why the other characters put so much emphasis on respecting Mariah's vegetarianism as a noble choice instead of calling her out as a choosing beggar in a situation where they're short on supplies, are barely able to forage plants, and she was actively dissuading them from fishing--which both Gregor and Karin implied they had experience doing, unlike Anatoly winging it with the foraging.
I thought that was weird, because if they weren't in a cursed Baba Yaga/serial cannibal situation, it would have been her fault the party was doomed instead of the MC.
@@leahnzastrzelecki5217 Nah. A vegetarian is nbd in a survival scenario--like Mariah said, if you cooked meat she would've just picked it off of the plate and eaten everything else. More for the rest of us, if anything.
Honestly my instinct was the reverse of what happened in-game. Regarding what order to cannibalize the characters in, I thought it'd be much smarter to do away with Gregor first since he's the biggest... but in hindsight he's too pure-hearted to be threatening in any way regardless of his size, and the game can't progress down the normal story line if Mariah survives the first death. She doesn't eat meat after all, she would've rejected good ol' Gregor stew even if she didn't know it was human meat. She wouldn't have received The Hunger curse. Who knows what would've happened then aside from the other characters giving in and eating her.
@@baydiac Oh, I agree with you on both Gregor being the best stew candidate, and Mariah having the option to personally abstain if the others caught fish. My issue is that she told them not to even try fishing just to please her own sensibilities. This was on the last day they had to gather food too, and they weren't doing well foraging.
Then later two starving, meat-eating characters praise the MC for respecting Mariah's vegetarianism, yet she imposed it on the rest of the group, and made the situation worse for her friends, not just herself. Granted the characters were all doomed either way.
I like the character and her motivation for being a vegetarian is quite organically weaved into the story. I respect vegetarians IRL and think it's a noble choice, though I'm not one myself. It's just the fact that they had characters that were indirectly hurt by Mariah's strict vegetarianism and no personal reason to adhere to it themselves to highlight that trait as something so positive that felt weird to me--like wrong place to do it to the point it's kind of a narrative contradiction.
@@leahnzastrzelecki5217 As a pragmatist, I'd have to agree with you when it comes to survival. Death by starvation is a bad way to go in any case & I'd want to do everything I could & then some just to avoid going through that or worse. I wouldn't want to even THINK about something like a Donner Party scenario in any case. The Grisaia anime series also deconstructed that situation by showing how following the Donner Party's example could end VERY badly for you. It still creeps me out thinking about it. As a bit of a side note, I've got to say that it's rare to find a game where someone's vegan diet causes problems with a character. The only other game I know of that did it (and even then only momentarily) was Pandora's Tower. The main heroine initially complains, but she has to eat some meat to avoid turning into a monster in the game. It makes more sense in context. I'm just giving the quick version here since anyone who's curious can probably find a Let's Play of that Wii game if they want to know more.
@@leahnzastrzelecki5217 Yeah, I'd have tried fishing or trapping animals for more food & just told her that we'd split whatever rations we had in such a way that she wouldn't necessarily HAVE to eat meat if she were so insistent on it. I'd have also warned her that if things got worse (like if the storm trapping them carried on too long) then she'd have to bite the bullet to make it out alive.
Theory
The protagonist is some mythical creature that lives for a long time. This is supporter by several facts:
1) at the sight of the radio he says “the newest out of everything what I've seen.” Given his lifestyle, it's unlikely he contacts civilization often, so he's out of touch with progress.
2) Karin's “disease”, judging by all indications - old age. The protagonist does not realize what it is, and assumes that she has become ill.
3) dates on notes
4) cornbread's words about the protagonist eating her years ago
5) the appearance of the protagonist's hands. Wrinkled and weird colour that usually in mangas/anime old people have
Thats.... make sense :)
If I had to guess, MC is baba yaga. Karin looks like hero in Ivan somethings rendition of baba yaga. Plus its somewhere in a Slavic country, and MC seems to be unreasonably strong. (I had already played the game and seen that, it just makes me happy whenever I see it, and I can corroborate it with my username here!) Glad you completed it, I completed the fight by the green background (don't know how) but because of that, never saw the Anatoly background and most of the Chompettes dialogue.
Also, with the "Better than 5 people in one night" comment, as well as Cabbage confirming that Potato attacked them, makes me sure that they aren't connected to any other characters, but are ghosts from a different series of murders. Many people have pointed out that half of the nightmares are based on tales of the Baba Yaga, who's known to eat people, mostly children.
You might be a similar supernatural entity, which explains how you are keeping the Chompettes there, and how, despite your poor shape (arthritis, boney arms and grey-ish skin) Karin still died before you could.
Or, the cabin could be the thing keeping the last one standing alive after the killings, until another group comes by. Then this process repeats, and there could be a possible succession based on who ends up still alive at the end. For instance, if Karin killed you, she'd be the next "Baba Yaga" being kept alive. Remember how "people who die in the cabin are bound to different rules" and the Chompettes don't want Karin "taking over the cabin" since she's apparently even worse than you?
As for the Chompettes, maybe in the past you goated whoever Potato was into killing the others, then killed Potato? Or you legitimately killed Potato in self-defense, but either way, because of the influence of the cabin and the fact you probably did start running out of food, you eventually cooked all of them and ate them. They might be ok with you now because they've been there for so long, but it seems like everyone besides Cabbage (and maybe Onion?) still really hate Potato for killing them in the first place.
Nice
Awesome
love this explanation, I think pretty much the same!
There's something called an Ala, which is very similar to Baba Yaga, but has the ability to possess people and control the weather, It creates storms and hail to ruin crops. (hence the rain and flood)
I also kinda think the story takes place between 1920-1930, Ukraine was hit by a terrible famine they call the Holodomor that killed 3-7 million people (Thank Stalin) and I think our characters here are a group of refugees fleeing the country (which is why they don't act like friends) and they're already starving by the time they reach the cabin (which is why they turn to cannibalism so fast) One of the notes is signed by a military officer and later General that lived during that time too.
I don't know, just my thoughts.
@@derekdrake8706 the Ala thing makes sense, because at some piont somebody (i think cabbage, but dont take my word for it, mayyyybe potato?) sed something that implies that you can control the weather.
I agree with Manly
I wanted to see more of the basement, a little bit more of gore or even more random scary faces, did the moldy bread made anyone get hallucinations? I wanted to also see MC's face, maybe a little bit more of background on everyone
But I loved the game anyway, I love the different endings (I have to admit, the Karin ending was my favorite in a sick way, I liked the twisted romance) I wish everyone could be saved anyway
I think the mold stated Mac king everybody halcnate and the chompetes are the pervios victims and patoa killed everyone
Me too, i thought that seeing the result of our sins in the basement, seeing the gore and the corpses, would be a perfect climax and ending for the story.
I think the group knew the protag was the Baba Yaga, considering how terrified they were at the beginning when she asked the question. They never really let their guard down until the Baba Yaga didn't immediately threaten them, I assume this is because the Baba Yaga can be either benevolent and help those who wander into her domain, or do the complete opposite and eat them. They got lulled into a false sense of security, that the Baba Yaga wasn't going to eat them. Until they realised too late that when they sent Mariah out and they suddenly had meat, the Baba Yaga was indeed eating them, and feeding them to each other. That's why Anatoly and Gregor didn't want to leave, they knew they'd get eaten. That's why Karin was so insistent on everyone else leaving before her, that's why Anatoly kept on vomiting, and how Gregor immediately knew that Anatoly would never come back. Karin probably thought "ooh Baba Yaga is a kindred spirit", and thought that if they shared that common interest she'd be safe, we know how manipulative she is. We know she'd do anything to save herself (except in the romance ending, then they really were just a couple of cannibals).
Manly's attempts at speaking portuguese make me happy cause most people will pronounce alot of it differently but his was actually different, just needed a bit of the accent and slowing down the reading of the words
fun fact: 616 it is supposed to be the real number that should be instead of 666 that is justified by an error in the translation of the Hebrew, if it is true or not, this detail is still very interesting.
666 was a code for Christians during the Roman persecutions under Nero (for whom the number stood for. People considered him to be “a beast” due to his size, appearance and demeanor).
That is why it’s called “the book of _revelations”._ If you know the secret codes (as the BoR has a lot of numbers referring to things), the truth will be revealed.
I liked it so much that I just wanted more. Karin's so great and seeing Mariah, Anatoly, and Gregor? The taste we get of the latter three makes me wish they had fleshed out routes where they become equally murderous as Karin and threaten our way of life as well. But that'd be a very long game and it might overstay the welcome.
Karin needed to be the ultimate "bad" of the plus endings but a few routes watching the pure cinnamon rolls giving into the hunger would have been great because the devs did a great job and I appreciate the research and easter eggs. Much love, very great.
“The *taste* we get of the latter three makes me wish they had *fleshed out* routes-” did you just make a pun
I think that they didn't go full with the other's routes because they hint that only Karin might have been another cannibal before
In her route at the very end she tells you how her dad died while her and her mother were probably starving, I think Karin didn't think twice before and after eating Mariah like the others because she already ate her father all those years ago (she even comforted Anatoly after puking and left him some extra meat to eat again, probably something her mother did with her, it's strange isn't it? Karin the most mean of the group left Anatoly extra meat to eat again instead of yelling at him) and she might have eaten her mother too
@@avreclione _"You remind me of my mother... I ate my mother."_
You know, this in mind, I really wonder what would have happened if Mariah wasn't the first to go out into the floodwaters. She's stated to not eat meat, right? How would she cope or react if the only thing she could eat was meat? She may not simply be vegan, or to phrase it another way, she may not be avoiding meat by choice; though, it's true that if she had some kind of dietary problem with meat, she'd probably not just be picking around her meals like she mentioned usually needing to do in other parts of the game and would have to have an entirely different dish instead to avoid gastrointestinal problems. Then again, she's mentioned being a refugee as well in her max-relationship scene, so if she went through food insecurity before, that might disincentivize her towards vegetarianism by choice (as opposed to vegetarianism by necessity), and it'd give her a reason to deal with GI problems of being unable to reliably eat meat rather than ask for another dish.
To be fair as well, she's also stated to be the one who keeps the group calm in her biography. It's only after she dies that Karin starts going off the rails, though whether that's due to the horror hunger or specifically due to Mariah's absence is kind of up in the air. If Mariah's the reason Karin started testing boundaries (Karin telling the protagonist she's not giving Anatoly a choice re: exiting the cabin and outright butchering Gregor) as opposed to the cannibalistic hunger, then the game would have gone down a different route... though I doubt the end would have changed (ie they'd all end up dead and eaten).
God, these characters really shine. Combined with the scary bits being mostly in the story and in upsetting images (ie the ghoul forms/faces) rather than in jumpscares, and this really makes it into one of my favorite horror games.

I backed this on Kickstarter and I’m glad I did.(my name is Bun Bun on the credits) Awesome little experience. This is 12 minutes are among my top favorite indie games this year.
Damn. I have an account for Kickstarter, and I don't actively search games like these. I should have! This art of ther twisted faces- especially when you see all three dead characters standing beside one another. Their eye sockets bore into mine and I was about to shit myself the longer I stared.
Manly, my baby is being born today. Thank you for keeping me entertained while I get sent in and out of the delivery room. Keep being a badass hero, manly.
Congrats with becoming a parent!
Congratulations
Congratulations! I hope your baby is healthy and happy.
The baby is happy and healthy! Relatively stress free delivery! Thanks for the kindness guys!!!

Oh that's great! I know I don't know you, but I'm still glad. And no problem. Wishing you guys all the best! 😊👍✨
One of the things I found myself enjoying was the way the mystery unfolded around the protagonist. It's not a big twist saved for the end and it's not completely spelled out, but it's very clear from their apathy and well-practiced methods what they've done. I wish the relationships besides Karin had more impact, but I assume that would have extended the game's scope too unnecessarily.
I'm fine with it as an artistic choice. Shows that the MC has no true sympathy for their victims, but finds Karin's actions relatable and watches on with a morbid curiosity.
34:44 god this part is terrifying, on mobile if you double tap on the edges of the screen it'll light it up and skip forward, and you can see the groups corpses in the dark, scared the shit out of me
Just finished staying awake for over 51 hours, and a word of advice, it is definately best to watch this play through on a full stomach. I started watching on an empty one, and oooohhhh boy. I cleared half my cabnit of it's food after the videos.
Honestly, I kinda want to know more about the story about this game that takes place OUTSIDE of the cabin.
ESPECIALLY the year and location.
As going from Mariah's secret dialogue, Cooking Companions seems to take place somewhere in Russia during the Cold War/USSR era.
My guess is that this was set around the 1950s to 1970s.
Other than that, I'd say that this game was great and creepy as hell too!
I give it an 8.5 out of 10.
I actually suspect it took place during the Holodomor genocide in Ukraine! All the dates totally check out and the fleeing absolutely makes sense!
A lot of the documents you gather during the game mention Zakopane, which is located in the Polish mountains, so the cabin setting is most probably in Poland. One of the characters also mentioned how they went west (from Ukraine), so it makes sense
Yeah, I think it takes place during the Holodomor. That was, what.. 1920-1930? The group was probably already starving when they stumbled upon the cabin, which is why they turned to cannibalism so fast. One of the notes in the game was signed by a polish General that lived around that time too.
i mean in the court summons letter under the bathtub the date is May 4th, 1794. That could? indicate something about the timeline but we really don’t know how old MC is..
i cant recall what the other dated note listing crimes was dated but i hope this helps you a bit if you hadn’t noticed it
@@slfshmachines the MC is obviously a supernatural/Boogeyman kind of fella, a lot speculated baba yaga or Slavic wendigo
my thoughts right now is that the protagonists first victims might've been the chompettes.
this is gonna contain a lot of guesses but i have a sneaking suspicion the protaganist knew the chompettes before the murder stuff, and probably a similar event to what happened in the game(get stuck in cabin, starve, eat each other) happened.
mostly because of the fact that razael/cornbreads toy boat was found there, i feel like potato is either, as you said, another cannibal, or a particularly tough victim.
i feel like the protagist also used to be human, but is now becoming some sort of baba yaga due to the cannibalizing.
story line theories include:
-chompettes minus potato probably and the protaganist were close, possibly had some sort of familial dynamic
-potato either is a random victim, or tried to kill every other chompette and the protaganist, which made it so the protaganist killed him, but not before some sort of cannibalizing act happened
-gonna assume it happened due to being trapped and having no other choices
-chompettes start to possess the protaganist out of spite, and it might've actually started out like how the new groups possession worked, but slowly dulled due to the chompettes not really blaming the protaganist anymore
-the protaganist seems stuck in old ways but also doesn't try and help themselves, victims keep on pouring over, bad things keep on happening, but they do anything about it, they just let it happen it seems, i feel like that's probably the supernatural element, especially because the protaganist didn't seem thrilled that they answered the riddle wrong, just business as usual
its like midnight for me though so like, my thoughts are probably a bit fucked lol, tldr: protaganist is an unwilling but also non opposing cannibal, doesn't like their situation but also doesn't do anything about it
The very first dream has something "digging its claws into his back" and riding him around, which doesn't let go until he kills himself.
"A monkey on your back" is slang for addiction. Maybe he's addicted to what he's doing.
Not gonna lie, I’m still just as confused as when I first started watching Manly’s playthrough.
The game was good, but because I’m a simpleton, I have no clue what the implications of each ending mean.
Prolly need some “big brain time” to understand everything about the game.
All I get is, the character the player controls is an inconsistent (story wise) murderer (or not, idk), the group of 4 are refugees and each of their backstories are sappy (which I’m a sucker for), and the cabin is haunted… or cursed…
Man, it’s too late for me to think properly. I love this game.
@@displaynockker9822 its not that your a simpleton, its just that this game is just...... how do I say it nicely? All over the place. Dont get me wrong, I love this game. But its super confusing, constant references to Slavic folktales, I mean Karin is literally an anime version of a character who beat the baba yaga. There's hints that the protag is baba yaga, but also hints that he's a murderer who is a cannibal nothing more. Some stuff isn't explained or is too vague, like how he got the bodies, or what things mean, a lot of the game is vague. Especially since one ending implies the MC is immortal or something, plus Potato says something like that. But It isn't elaborated on, its just subtle hints, and just that. Again, love the game, dont get me wrong. Just needs a few more tidbits of explaining
i have found the game to lack more clues for the plot, but i agree with your theory, the turnip at end is very likely Karin passing through the process of becoming one of the chompettes, another interesting thing is Razael that could mean "secret of god" and also it's a weird name for the period of the history, i have a theory that each chompette is someone who marked the protagonist someway, since only one new chompette appeared instead of one for each dead character.
@@pancakes8816 I dunno, I thought it was pretty clear with just the letters dating back at the 1700's and the implication that he's been doing this for generations. I understand what you mean by all over the place, but unless you paid extra, _extra_ attention to the pieces of information, it does make up a picture
Sooooo the Chompettes and Cornbread were previous victims before the game starts.... that's depressing and makes a lot of sense.
EDIT:
OH FUCK RADISH
Who radish is?
Turnip??
@@gaiathis6925 That's Karin.
@@valumtimes ooohh i see i see, thank you
@@valumtimes I don’t think it is because when radish appears it says “he’s waking up” so I don’t think it’s Karin
As for the age, the court case your character skipped was from the 1700’s. The woman wanting her daughter back was from the 1800’s … so somebody’s been cooking for awhile. Do you think potato taught your character to cook before you betrayed him, and that’s why the other four veggies lock him up and stuff?
Your cuts, transitions, and speed ups you do in the video are expertly done
really love all the art and influence of slavic culture. i also like how the game doesnt (usually) rely on jumpscare horror to retain the player’s attention, mostly through anticipation and a solid example of “show, dont tell” storytelling. although the middle endings were a bit messy and the other characters could have been developed more (especially mariah, best character dont @ me 😤), overall an entertaining experience, of course partly thanks to manly’s commentary. scrolling the comments has also been fun lol
Yea wish there was more character development for mariah :(
Agreed Mariah best character
“Leaving the cabin” starting to sound like “going to a farm” lmfao
45:52 After Manly said it so many times, at least one developer had to put in the "Like your soul" line xD
They put a reference in Who's Lila too
50:20 as a native portuguese speaker: WHAT THE HECK THAT CAUGHT ME SO OFF GUARD LMFAO
i thoght that was my old notebook messing around again, but when i heard Manly absolutely butchering the words, i had to replay it, Manly speaking portuguese is even more disturbing than the horror aspects of this game lmao
SIM VÉI EU TBM FIQUEI TIPO?????? Como assim que porr e essa em português
What does it say?
When you pointed out the Baba Yaga thing, I only realized it then that Karin's whole dress design is based on that one famous Vasilisa depiction which you can also see on the Wikipedia page. That's cool.
Before I finish this video, here’s a theory: while everyone in the comments was talking about the connections to Baba Yaga in the last video, what if it’s not Baba Yaga but her son, Koschei the Deathless. I believe in one story he was captured in a basement as well, and the protagonist seems to have been here a very long time, perhaps more generations than a normal human.
I didn’t even know Baba Yaga had any children of her own. Need to look this up. Slavic folklore is really interesting.
Vast majority of folk tales never name Kaschei as Baba Yaga's son, at least those I've read, I think it's more of a folklorists' speculation on inter-character relationships in slavic myths.
I think that it is Baba Yaga, not Koschei. More specifically, because of Razael and the dream sequence involving a young boy, because of a story in which she kidnaps a young child and locks him in a cage to fatten him up. The dream sequence with the blacksmith reminds me of another story, where the baba yaga is not the focus, rather a blacksmith who is given impossible tasks by tsar, such as in the story of Ivan, the firebird, and the grey wolf (though in some stories and even variations of that specific example, he is the tsar's son instead). In one, (not the example used) he encounters the baba yaga and escapes by similar means. I always thought that he was the same person as in that story, though not entirely sure. There's also the whole "did you come of your own will or were you sent".
Finally a game that references manly's soul in game.
It's not the first.
There's more than you'd think...but less than you'd hope
The main route was already pretty intense, but all the modes that followed it just kept on building upon the insanity in the best way. Just enough lore on the Chompettes to explain what they are, more details on who and what the protagonist exactly is, some fun nods to other horror media. I really enjoyed this, I feel it more than delivered on the potential the original demo showed off. Hats off to the developers, my hunger is satiated.
That detail of Karin's pupil widening as she dies is a freaky but cool detail. Definitely gave me the goosebumps!
I think it’s interesting how in the Abyss ending when Karin attacks you her hair is down and when she lays on the floor bleeding her hair is in a braid.
I was cursing the internet for not having the ending uploaded with commentary. You always come in clutch Manly.
If you become a crazy cannibal, your face will turn monstrous and freaky according to this game lol
I really want some answers on to what you are. Is the player a Wendigo? An Ala weather demon thing? Baba Yago herself?
The player is a Baba Yaga! You can tell from when they asked the “Are you here of your own free will or by compulsion“ question, which is something they ask according to Wikipedia!
@@planetsliveinsidethemoon1600 I started suspecting last episode when characters basically were discussing who they wanted to eat but they never mentioned of they should eat you (on the first time they did it by taking out sticks they only had 4).
Also a lot of the times they wouldn't include you in their discussions at all, but all of the would come for advice.
I see it as the legend of coming to Baba Yaga for advice, which is seen as really dangerous because if you don't respond to her questions correctly she may just eat you.
Also they were probably doomed from the start because she doesn't take blessed people into her cabin.
Also I guess that's why time moves weirdly (like when a bunch of days moved quickly, then moved to a different number and then changed back to 15, or why days change just after you do random things around the house).
It's said that Baba Yaga would age after answering someone's question, giving them advice or helping them. Would also make her more hungry for meat but never satisfy her (no matter how much she eats she still looks like a famished old lady with her bones showing).
That's why she's so reluctant to help people, unless they bring her blue roses, which revert her ageing.
Best Halloween costume ever
I just watched the first part a few hours ago and was biting my nails just waiting for the next part! I'm so excited to find out more lore and to see you finish the game!
