The only thing with tourism is that you also have to get there and that is not really environmentally friendly. However, this might be a stepping stone to achieve a world where humankind can live again alongside the other inhabitants of this planet without taking advantage over them. Thanks for reporting on this!
That's why it is luxury ecotourism instead of just ecotourism. So not too many people will come and offset the benefits from the ecotourism project. Plus the additional money will be pumped back into conservation. It's unfortunate ppl beneath the middle class will have a hard time affording the ticket price, but that's the solution to solve this complex problem. I'm open to better ones
I hope covid-19 hasn’t killed this business model. Praying that they can keep this up! ❤️
I love The Economist, their world relevant reporting. This is happening off Indonesian islands, correct?
So cool! We need more people like them on this planet.
This is amazing - the only issue i have is that the resort is only attainable to "luxury" customers, but in this time and age it is the younger crowd whom travels more, and is in touch with social media and word of mouth marketing and are very sustainable minded. I think it would be much more successful if accessing the eco-resorts globally was affordable to more social classes.
Excelent, we have so much to do, in order to conserve our Paradise. Dominican Republic.
Amazing, what they've done is great. Raja Ampat is really clean. Schedule your visit here the next time you come to Indonesia.
as someone who was born in Indonesia, I feel sad that it has to be foreginers who are fixing our issues.
It was foreigners that created the problem in the first place. Colonization and displacement is no joke.
Foreigners aren't responsible for overfishing.
The peaceful landscape at 6:00 makes me want to grab my backpack and go right now! So inspiring!
Thumbs up from Pakistan for this Amazing work
Planet A first and business second, really appreciated this Eco-tourism.
I think that this is great but doubtful that the market (luxury eco tourism) is big enough to save the ocean.
John L. This alone will not save the ocean, but it surely helps and brings a significant contribution. Other factors such as littering will be crucial too
I agree with previous comments by Art in Hertz but would like to add that eco-tourism isn’t the only economic or social interest in a flourishing ocean. Purposes including scientific research could be brought to light, and as the innovative base of entrepreneurs grows I believe that more innovative economic solutions can be found.
John L. Where there are good intentions, things usually work out.
very true, only limited sites can be developed as eco tourism. In addition, people employed in this endeavour is just 200 - fraction of local population dependent on ocean.
Privatise the ocean
I was really inspired by this. If we could see commitment from governments, communities, and individuals as much as seen here, than we could really give some hope to the rest of our worlds oceans. Maybe if organizations including Sea Legacy or intergovernmental bodies including UNEP could take up this idea in a broader scale, that dream could be achieved. Also, could we use satellites to guard more remote areas of the reef in conjunction with local rangers?
An extraordinary way to conservate the environment.
conservate?
Both profitable and good for the environment. Haven't seen that in a while...
THIS is what progress looks like. Well done.
*FENSEN WAS HERE* (in 26 AUG 2020)
Even a smallest little detail can help...When all the world will be IN the process💚😊
Who ever trying to save the environment is not wrong. But I can assure you that, there more ppl destroying the environment, intentionally or unintentionally. Hope you'll continue saving the world.
this is on my bucket list
Just awesome and inspiring!
As someone who never did something as important as this, I feel very inspired and happy about the foundation's benefits!
This is tricky because you don’t want to fall into the trap of the “white savior” complex - where ownership of land is handed over to foreigners. There should be a plan in place for locals to transition and take over the eco business over time - and locals negotiate from within - rights to fish and use their own land to sustain as they always have - but without the need for foreign looting or exporting. I’m sure his heart is on the right place and he’s made a huge difference. However, This is a huge money maker for the english owner and cannot create substantial prosperity for the people. Imagine how much money he’s getting for each client staying there - compared to what he’s probably paying out to local workers.
That's exactly what i was tinking as well. Even if this couple only keeps a small cut of the profits for themselves, the locals are still dependend from them and their business.
As an Indonesian, I agree with your opinion.
FYI, Based on prediction reports of rising global temperatures and temperatures in Indonesia, Raja Ampat may be affected by coral bleaching in less than 2050 due to rising sea water temperatures, coral reef bleaching has spread to Indonesia in several islands such as Bali, Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi. Then it might start to spread to Maluku and then Papua (Raja Ampat - Misool).
Air travel and Cruise ships have a considerable carbon footprint. The most true eco-tourism is a staycation remaining within your local area or state
That is true, however, if these guests were going to go on holiday anyway, it is better for their money to go to this conservation organisation rather than into the pockets of a big hotel chain and holiday resort that does nothing for the environment.
A very interesting video. We really have to start recovering ecosystems and reduce the environmental load our production and consumption patterns are pounding on them.
Our planet was created with a lot of diversity, and we can not let it die just because we don't know how to solve our own problems!
So inspiring, absolutely incredible work!
This is inspiring. I am from Timor-Leste a nearby country and my beautiful half-island country is falling within the Coral Triangle Domain. I am willing to do the same, by any chance could I please be connected with the resort operator.
Thank you for finally covering some of the most important topics affecting this next generation.
great video, thanks
wow that place is BEAUTIFUL! does the natives living there know that they are living in paradise?!
Thank you!
The way to do this is to give other people economic incentives that are non extractive, so good on the resort! It is also crazy to see just how fast the reserve has recovered in just 12 years, I mean 600% more fish biomass is unprecedented. Just goes to show how resilient mother nature truly can be and how the world could look if all humans lived in harmony with it.
I cry watching this. Oh my country 😭😭😭😭
Can I ask for help with technical information to revive the sustainability of marine ecosystems in our local area?
me to I also hope covid-19 hasn’t killed this business model.
Introducing Misool, one of the four kings a.k.a Raja Ampat.
Great video!
Amazing!
মহান আল্লাহর অপার সৌন্দর্য। আলহামদুলিল্লাহ।
Does anyone know the name of the beautiful piece of music at the start of the video?
beautiful
can underwater drones be used?? to capture, and possibly mark the pouching vessel with gps?? just wonder?
Do you mind sharing your reference that says '36 billion $ generated from SCUBA dive tourism '?
LOVE this. Can I have a job? 😅
Heroes
You guys are Heroes
All fishing? How r they gonna eat that’s all surrounding them!
Can someone sum up this for me please
you are creating another form of policing of their own people. While it is in support of the wildlife there, it can also be summarized as creating again protection against private property, as wildlife there serves as its main attracting asset. In this business model, land ownership though leased is just being transferred to non locals, and relatively exploited over. It is still wealthy individuals who in the end get to enjoy the area, what about the locals that are from the area?
Why turtles and sharks are hunted? Where there is demand...
Privatise the ocean. There's a reason we don't have government ownership of land
Fishing nets are the most harmful type of human influence in my opinion😔😔😔😔
Poor shark 😢
here from HOSP 335
I haven’t watched it yet. My initial answer is NO.
Edit: Wow, this is interesting!
doamna de engleză dacă vedeți asta să știți că mi-a plăcut videoclipul
I blame Michael Cohen
No, no it won't. Failing to address problems created by human-made climate change is one of the great filters. We are doomed, its over. The only positive thing is that I was born in the 80s so I will still live my life through relatively normal weather patterns ,until I die .However people born now who will live past 2050 will have it bad, really, really bad.
Don't give up yet, we're messing up badly, but with conservationist efforts such as this, and carbon negative schemes, such as reversing desertification, pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere for industrial use... we could maybe not screw up too badly.
Just to stop evil busynesses with China, and introduce more busynesses from richer countries for a good and cheap casual service would be attractive, while then, neither to conserve the nature resources nor to consume source of tourists will be resourceful. It's tropical Indonesia.
孟凡羽 Half of what you said makes no sense.
Jokes aside, doing business with China is not all the same, different people have different behaviors
I feel pity for the turtle.. but they are doing really great.. :) I wish we all do something for our environment.. :)
Ban Fishing Internationally!
I heard they managed to stop blast fishing by dropping thousands of virgin mary statues on the reef. This wouldn't work in Indonesia though, perhaps they could drop waterproof Korans?
Not in eastern Indonesia where the dominant religon is Catholic. Indonesia is a diverse country
I didn't watch the video but the answer is 'no it can not'
Good.luck
Fantastic channel! I hope you’d appreciate our channel too! Please let us know what you think and please have a blessed day! 😁💜
That does not answer the question... are you sure this is a certified channel?
Funny, it's more an infomercial than a report, commissioned by the resort
Silly
It says it was made with support from www.blancpain.com/ Not the resort.
Sometimes I feel we need more pandemics to save the planet.
-/_GDP planets milk waY
No no no. It only brings destruction.
Need help...we are copying your model....
Jajaj que audacity. The earth is fine. No. It will not help. On the contrary
So basically you have to be rich to have access to these islands.
