I like a.r.rahman music very much. I am not able appreciate this song.My lack of western music knowledge like blues and jazz whatever is the reason. But I am very happy to read the comments by thousands of fans in India and abroad. I feel happy as a fellow Indian. 🙏
I know ARR is known for many other better works. But this composition is so close to my heart. Infact the whole Kadal album is just pure magic. And I feel it's not talked about much. This literally made my day.

When kadal released I got addicted to this song and watched it hundred of times. Coming from someone who doesn't understand Tamil.

I am not a South Indian but all day I listen to Sid Sriram, kinda my study music plus the ignorance of the language makes me just enjoy the music without any thoughts about other things in lyrics.

I have been into south Indian artistry since I was in my teens and there was no internet back then(am a 42 years old Pakistani Punjabi).I bet they never disappoint.you don't need to know their language(though it's a many times greater with knowing or at least having sub's) to love them they r that good.

This song is coreographed in a way that it starts with the sun from east and ends with sunset to the west..you can notice the shadow moving from one side to the other.
Enjoyed this! You are still discovering new Ar Rahman stuff. Arr had lot more western music in his composition early in his career but made it more subtle as his career progressed. One of his most iconic albums is thiruda thiruda( referred to by Amit trivedi in his interview as his earliest inspiration). Tou will see the Indian and epic western classical blended seamlessly in “veerapandi kottayile” song in this mani ratnam film. Mani later said the movie failed because the music was too big and created a huge expectation. The song is still one of ARRs epic composition.
Another fun fact - sid sriram is an American by birth. Grew up in california in a Tamil home around Indian classical music. He is primarily a hip hop/R&b artist until he became full time Tamil playback singer.
I know you did not speak much of the lyrics. The lyrics has romance and deep biblical references weaved which did not translate well in your video. Heaven, lamb, “painting me white”, elevating while in love (of god / partner), “tugging on your heartstrings”, “mirror - transformed to same image”, wings, “painting a fish”, etc. etc. hence the choice of gospel based blues/jazz which has evangelistic tinge. At the end of day it is just brilliant music. (I can write a chapter on this song. But will save it).

@@incarnation8187 just a small story.. most people know how Sid got the chance to sing this song, so i will go a different direction.
you may already know this since we are on “veerapandi kotayile” song. Rahman obviously worked very hard on the composition… Shankar was working at that time with Rahman on the movie Gentleman(movie with the song Mukkala muqabla). When Shankar heard the song “veerapandi kottayile”, he was completely floored and tried to get Rahman to give the song to him.. Rahman told Shankar “I will give you a better song than this.”.
This is how the song “Ottagathai katiikom” from movie Gentleman was born. Not as much Western influence in this song, but nevertheless a typical large Shankar song.

Lmao shankar uses cheap gimmicks in his song visualization, a lot of his past works does not age well one bit. Mani ratnam has always been ahead of time.

I went to watch this movie in a single screen theatre..and people were laughing at this song..because..mass audience couldn't get it..to be frank we were not ready for this kind of music n choreography back in 2013..got goosebumps watching this song now..
Agree and had the same experience.. being a dancer I was totally enjoying the song and was totally disappointed with audience reaction but yea it's expected n normal, not everyone likes everything ryt.. by the time this song came in the movie, the movie was already heading towards disaster 😂

Sid Sriram is a Californian dude! From SFC, Trained in Indian classical as well as Jazz and Blues. 😀 He composes too . Sings prity much in any Indian language. So far he sang in all South languages including Marathi. Exceptional talent indeed. His mom is a Indian Classical singer , teacher in the US.
Let's not say all: the number of South Indian languages is more than 4. 🙂
