What do you do as a caravanning “Grey Nomad” when medical issues strike??

  • It’s been a “challenging” few months!
We came to Mornington at the end of 2023 to spend Christmas and the New Year with the family, and to get Jill’s torn tendon surgically repaired…or so we thought!
Things turned out very differently…life throws these “curve balls” at you from time to time.
The events of the last few months made us question our chosen “Grey Nomads” life style and made us think long and hard about how we could be better prepared for medical issues should they arrive whilst we are “homeless”
But still and all…we were very glad to finally get back non the road again…5 months after we arrived!

Thanks . Great feedback. I’ll make a few changes next time. I was a bit “rusty” with the editing 😀

Since I’ve been in my 50s I wouldn’t be without health insurance now. My mum is in her 70s and broke her hip and after 7 months of no apt at the clinic got health insurance and then waited the 12 months and finally got her surgery. So more than 18m on the public system and still no date for surgery. They live down on the Mornington Peninsula as well. Same with cataract surgery. If she’d have been into the caravanning that would have been 18 month that she could not travel for. My dad used his health insurance for cataracts, prostate, heart & cancer issues all in his 70-80s. It’s not worth the risk to be without it. For really life threatening issues like heart attack, the public system is fine but non urgent that still seriously impacts your life like the hips, tendons, eyes - you need to get it. Glad you’re on the mend Jill.

Glad to see you guys on the move again, I think it pays to have health insurance these days as hospital system struggles to keep up happy travels and keep the vids coming 😊

So great to see you going again. I hope you're feeling better Jill. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures. I wouldn't be without private health, I've seen so many people suffer while waiting on lists. I suppose it also comes down to how much you save by not having insurance & if you come out better been self funded. It's a bugger with the water filling, that must drive you mad as that would be a regular chore, looks like you have a bit of a system to overcome it. Safe travels. 🥰

Yes I am feeling much better now. Thanks. Yes we tried the "self funding" path. WE cancelled our private healthy insurance in 2020 because I was so disgusted at the "Gap" we still had to fund for Pete's cancer surgery on his foot!...But the events of the last few months have made us reconsider. Pete calculated that the amount were had saved since 2019 by not having private health insurance, was roughly the same amount as we have just paid out on my two surgeries...so just about a draw over the last 4 years!!!
Pete and Colin, our friend who we are travelling with at the moment, are attempting to do a water filling tank fix...Pete may even include that in our next video...if it works 😀

Good to see you well on the way to travelling again. Boy Jill, you sure know how to fix a tendon a strange way 😉. Do try to keep out of hospitals though eh! We also keep our health cover up and yes it is expensive but like all insurances you never know when you might need it. Age as well as health comes into it so it is very much a personal choice. Ours costs us $5k a year and does go up most if not each year so that needs to be factored in.

Thanks Jeff… yes it was a strange diagnosis 😆😆😆 We have no idea how she was misdiagnosed twice???
Yes health cover is a conundrum, an expensive but seemingly necessary evil!!!

In regard to filling your tanks… do you have drain taps on the tanks. I put a hose fitting on the drain tap and connect the hose to drain tap and fill from the bottom and the traditional fill point becomes the air bleed. I fill my tanks in a heart beat.

Yes Graeme. We have now modified the setup to do exactly that, and it works perfectly 😀
