Sarcosuchus: The Prehistoric Super Croc

- Sarcosuchus was a massive relative of crocodilians which lived in what is now North Africa and South America during the Early Cretaceous Period. This "Super Croc" was so large that it was not only capable of hunting dinosaurs, but was also the largest known predator in its environment. However, young Sarchosuchus had long, thin jaws specialized for catching fish, allowing them to avoid competing with the dinosaur hunting adults for food.

Which megacroc is your favorite? Mine is Purussaurus because it was a dino-killing croc in the age after the dinos. Basically, the revenge of Deinosuchus.
It is a tie between Deinosuchus and Sarcosuchus.

I like purusaurus because its absurdly large and chunky. And then you remember that it lived alongside car sized turtles and it's just like: well of course it's got jaws that look like they could crush a VW Beetle apart.
Mine is a tie between Sarcosuchus and Purussaurus.
Purussaurus it was a large caiman and of course it did not kill dinosaurs science show it wasn't big as like deino it was just a speculative answer that puru was bigger it mainly hunted large mammal like toxodon
Also sacrosuchus wasn't a true crocodile but are classified to be Pholidosauridae which they are still relative to crocodile

There's a rather famous study that concluded that while Deinosuchus and Purussaurus were capable of withstanding the torque associated with death-rolling, Sarcosuchus could not.
But given that false gharials and tomistoma likely have the same problem and they're capable of dismembering prey, I doubt it really means as much as people often make out. An isotopic analysis study does suggest Sarcosuchus preyed on both large fish and land animals.
Sarcosuchus can death roll. There's a more recent study on extant crocs that shows that all extant species are capable of it including tomistoma and gharials. Those two have much less robust jaws than sarcosuchus does.
If Sarco ever fed on dinosaurs, I think it more likely scavenged rather than preyed on them.
@@toonrex2806 it has a massive head with massive serrated and crushing teeth. Preyed upon and ate large dinosaurs.
Sarco had semi-zyphodont teeth so maybe deathrolling had less importance. Strong bites and sharp teeth alone should dismember prey without needing the death roll

The ontogenetic part is incredibly interesting. If you think about it it could be that the juvenile condition was the plesiomorphic state of the super croc's ancestors and sarcosuchus itself just didn't stop at that point, it would also neatly explain why they were growing for such a long time it was just the same genes that stayed active for longer.

It makes sense. If you can dismember a 5m long armoured coelocanth you can dismember a dinosaur carcass.

I first learned about the Sarco in the game called ARK and I did a little research on them and over time I began to really like them. Now I’ve become so fascinated by them.
They were very useful to me in the game too since it was my first creature in the game that was able to go through the dangerous seas in ARK and be able to either hold its own or escape. (I played the first 2 years of early access).
So many great insights all synthesized together. Another great CHimerasuchus production!
About its size: Some reconstructions by Randomdinos and Lamborlobator reach sizes of 10.5m and 5.5t. So it may have been a little bigger. The 2019 paper uses gavialids when estimating size which isn't a good comparison as sarcosuchus is much stockier than they are.

I have long been a strong fan of the Croc family and regardless of the scientific genera assigned, I find them ALL profoundly intimidating and awe inspiring.
Of course "The Big 3" Sarcho, Deino and Puru get the most press, though many of the lesser known are equally deserving of mention and I love the fact your channel dedicates a significant amount of time and effort in bringing all the wonderful "Crocs" to our attention. A very noble and worthwhile subject focus.

Congratulations on the video of the dinosaur eating Sarcosuchus, my friend! I also watched Chase by Dinosaurs because I have no idea that it has lived in Patagonia until now. But not Chase by Dinosaurs it made apearance, but the documentary of Super Croc, Ark Survival Evolved, Jurassic World the Game App, and the Path of the Titans game.

It is Laganosuchus. It wasn't large enough to be considered a mega-croc, but its relative Stomatosuchus is estimated to have been 10 meters long.

I hate the dumb comparison of sarcosuchus and a gharial. Sarcosuchus' jaws are way, way, way more robust and much wider on top of lacking interlocking teeth.
The most comparable extant croc is an orinoco crocodile.
Also, sarcosuchus could death roll. Extant gharials can. And they have much more fragile jaws than sarcosuchus. The study claiming it can't is heavily flawed.

I stand by and say that Sarcosauchus is a crocodile it can't be anything else. I grew up with this fact and even if something like convergent evolution exists there is plenty of evidence that proves that this is one of the largest crocodilians ever to walk the earth.
Imagine if a beast like this or other super crocs were still alive and lurking in places like the deep, unexplored Amazon.

The narrow shape of the Sarcosuchus jaws and the bulbous nose makes it looks more like modern day Gharial, which is a fish eater. Maybe it was just a big fish eater.

Sarcosuchus wasn't actually a crocodilian but a crocodylomorph. One of its most noticeable differences besides is snout is the scutes along the back, sitting in rows rather than a more scattered or split up pattern like modern day crocodilians.

Crocodyliformes is a slightly less inclusive subclade of Crocodylomorpha, so Sarcosuchus is both.

I Hypothesize that the Dino’s around at that time are to dangerously heavy and could cripple the Crocs. They went to fish since the bigger animals were too heavy to drag from the bank of beaches.
I mean, modern crocs tackle prey larger than themselves so this doesn’t really make sense.

@@tjarkschweizer nile crocodiles, saltwater crocodiles, false gharials, orinoco crocodiles, american alligators, american crocodiles, west african crocodiles, mugger crocodiles, etc. Basically any extant crocodilian besides the gharial and australian freshwater crocodile.

@@tjarkschweizer Saltwater crocodiles kill buffalo larger than themselves. American crocodiles hunt cattle in south america that can be larger than themselves. Black caiman also do this. A lot of the time they don't live with stuff larger than them. They're still perfectly capable of it though.
