  • Fear of driving after passing your test? This video explains how you can overcome this problem but why there is no quick, easy answer. You need to focus on finding the reason for your fear because nothing else will work. Book me at www.1stdrive.com/how-to-overc...
It's not about doing something new, it's about changing an old habit. That's why you'll see many self-proclaimed "experts" getting it wrong by talking about positive feedback loops, changing your diet or doing all kinds of funny things. Only by finding the cause of the problem will you get rid of it, otherwise it'll just keep coming back time after time.

This is a really important topic for some drivers. I personally still have some anxiety about driving even though I passed about 3 or so years ago. Once I passed my test I had very, very little anxiety because I had been practising so much. But once you start needing to drive yourself places, you realise you don't drive nearly as much as when you're practising for your test, so the anxiety starts to come back little-by-little.
I think the main key is to force yourself to drive (practise), because most drivers with anxiety simply have the fear of the unknown, 'Oh, what if XYZ happens?'. Well, the more you keep up your driving skill, the better prepared you'll be for certain situations.

What makes you say most drivers with anxiety have a fear of the unknown?

I get anxious before Starting to drive. But when I do drive I am relaxed and when theres a big situation like a lot of traffic and such then it becomes an issue again…

I had a bit of a fear myself but I decided that Im just gonna go and drive around the city everyday even if I dont have to go anywhere. after 2-3 weeks I was good. no fear anymore. now I know we are not all the same and thats not gonna help everybody but it helped me and it may help somebody else too. you just have to overcome your fear somehow.

Thanks for your feedback. It's normal to have fear like that, the people I work with have huge problems that are not so easy to overcome. Well, they think they're huge problems but they're not really. What's a problem to one person is nothing to another.

Sat in bed 2 days after passing my test and fearing picking up my car because it’s such an old model compared to what I learned in. Wish me luck.

Same! I have a 57 plate polo and I learnt in a brand new corsa. Huge difference between them, passed on Thursday and have driven my car once. It’s so different I’m not used to a handbreak also! 😳

After all the stupid fears, I actually had this a bit. I was alright after a month but stuck to places I know end slowly branched out. I didn’t go on a motorway until 3 years after passing, never needed to. It was fine, dual carriageways were worse.

This was me for ages. I am much better now but still drive mainly local. I ended up on the country road in Frankly. Luckily Google maps was on I just pressed home and managed to get home. It was dark so I guess I could have put the adaptive high beam on however It was adequate. I had to adjust my speed as the round was windy. I never got beeped which I worried about.
I think I needed to get lost to show me I can get home. I still have not drove into Birmingham yet. I am taking my children to sea life center but it may be a bit much driving there so may take the train instead.

I always do have anxieties about driving alone but I can do familiar places ok. After lockdown it was hard to get back into it but I can do places I know now. For me the main issue is after or before driving. After is the worst since I just worry if I did anything wrong. While actually driving I am mostly ok since I am too focused on the actual driving plus I have music on to help.
The reasons are worrying about where to go and what lane to be in if I don't know the route and just all round worrying if I am driving safely. I don't really drive in busy places much so that worries me too. Don't get much chance to, it's mostly rural with some small town driving.
This is helpful though, I just started to see a psychologist (had to pay for it privately sadly) so it's one thing I can talk over with them. NHS treatment is beyond bad here.

I passed in December 2015 and I'm still too scared to drive. I just want to be able to go to the supermarket and take my children to the dentist. It's so frustrating.

My main issue has been leaving it so long since passing to getting my own car. I passed November 2019 and didn’t get a car till November 2020. That’s a long time to stop driving, especially after passing. Since I’ve had my car, I’ve hardly been in it. I think that’s where my problem lies. How do I get over that? I think anxiety has built up in me over the course of a year and even now I have a car, I still get anxious about getting in it and driving it.
I am going to have to do a 30 min drive twice tomorrow night as I’m going on a night shift. It’s going to be the longest drive I’ve done since passing, and I’m doing it on my own too. 60 mph dual carriageway’s on the route too (avoiding motorways). I’m hoping I don’t bottle it last minute.

Are you saying that your anxiety exists because you haven't gotten in the car but getting in the car makes you anxious?
