Drives me nuts people not understanding the Martha moment. Not that I'm a genius or anything, but I understood it instantly. Check out, *Why You're WRONG About Batman v Superman - Batman's Motive Explained* he breaks down BvS way better than I ever could.
There are some arguments, like Lex that are subjective, that's ok. I get it, though this Lex I'm *ok* with. This version has been in comics as well, but I do love the "traditional" Lex. Most of the arguments against BvS are just objective misunderstandings like the Martha moment. Again, I'm no genius, but it's crazy to me how misunderstood this movie is.

In comics after Jason dies, Tim shows up and says that Batman became much more violent, risky and he was going to get killed and he had to prevent that. For me BvS was a "what if.." scenario, what if Bruce didn't get any support, lost his son, didn't have Justice League and lost even more people in an alien attack. Bruce knows he became a monster after 20 years in Gotham, he embraces this idea.

When he’s about to kill Clark and the only thing Clark was asking for him to do is save his mom, in that moment he realized this is just a person. Superman didn’t ask for any of this and Bruce was so fixated on hating Superman for the things he did like he caused it. Lex hated him unconditionally but Bruce hated him bc he was fed the lies throughout the movie by lex. You can’t take everything at face value, this movie has a little more depth than people give it credit for in the themes. This movie is about hate and how to over come it and come to terms with it. Batman mentions fear a lot and that’s what this (IMO outstanding) film is about: fear. Look at how afraid the powerful are when their power is surpassed. “That’s how it starts: the fever, the rage, the feeling of powerlessness that turns good men cruel.” Alfred is, in a way, referring not only to Bruce (a genius master martial artist billionaire), but Lex (a genius, egotistic billionaire), and mankind (the used-to-be dominant species on Earth)
Each of those groups/people were, in their minds, the apex predators of their societies. And with Superman around, all of their skills, muscles, money, and power mean virtually nothing.
It’s nice to imagine that we’d just be taking selfie’s on 5th Avenue with immortal Norse gods but humanity, in this film, is going through a real identity crisis. And Clark is trying to navigate himself in a world that...kinda won’t LET him be a hero.
If the movie seems “grey” it’s because this is how humanity would react, if not worse.

    • @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps
      @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes.
Bruce Wayne wants the Batman to "strike fear into a cowardly and superstitious lot" (almost like a dark god) while Clark wants Superman to inspire hope and good will in all and is deeply troubled being feared and worshipped almost like a deity.
So they practically start out seeing eachother as sabotaging their own life's work.
_"And with Superman around, all of their skills, muscles, money and power mean virtually nothing."_
And I disagree with them on that point. It's always been Clark's argument that no one knows what Superman and Lex Luthor could have done for mankind working together from the start.
This is later shown with the Justice League satellite HQ, that's not something Clark Kent just tinkers together on his own at superspeed like he would in the Silver Age comics where he was kind of limitlessly powerful in every way.

This is a bitter pill to swallow, while we imagine heroes will be celebrated, and cheered humanity rarely works like that. Batman v Superman is what happens when two people who have been watching and reading fake/inaccurate news engineered about them eventually meet. A true reflection of our current society where groups of people are tethering on hate for each other based on our 24hr news cycles. I take a cautionary tale in that. I like that the DCEU doesn't paint humanity as constant victims of invasions and destroyers, these people are active contributors to the destruction of their society.

But still very incoherent in parts. Doomsday plan makes no sense, especially if Batman managed to kill Sups. Doomsday makes no sense without it either - he kills Sups, now what?
Whole Superman investigating Batman and getting angrier serves zero purpose - he only attacked him when being blackmailed, so Lex didn't have to do anything to Superman, just take his mother and tell him, what to do like he did. And Batan didn't need it either, he was angry already, whole thing was about getting Kryptonite.
Martha doesn't work at all, Batman has to be mentally unstable and obsessed with his mother, instead we see him grieving for his parents like you do when they are killed when you were a child, he's also justifiably angry at Superman. If Batmans beaten those who kill mothers of wives to the inch of their lives, he would be unstable for Martha to work. If he trembled and stumbled at every mention of mothers of Marthas or family, it would have worked. If he saw nightmares throughout the movie about his parents it would have probably worked. But it's still disjointed and doesn't work at all.

I think it would help a lot of people's perspectives if they didn't go into this film with a pre-conceived notion of what Batman should be. He is introduced as the villain of the story. His arc is that he has his faith in humanity restored and becomes the good Batman he was before. That's what his intro monologue was about. How there used to be diamond abolutes (no killing) but it was all a beautiful lie. He went from "How many good guys are left? How many stay that way?" to "Men are still good." He makes a promise to be better on Clark's grave.
The story Snyder is telling was supposed to be a 5-film arc. Man of Steel, BvS, JL1-3. He was never trying retell the same story of the comics. Literally every film is a commentary on our society. Man of Steel was about how we would react to the introduction of a being like Superman. BvS was about how we would react to the aftermath of MoS and how politics/religion/etc would be affected by the existence of Superman. By the end of BvS, like Eric says, half the world worships him as god. Half hates him for being a destructive alien. But then he dies. The world was so busy about his existence, they didn't think about how much they need him. So in JL, we will see how the world mourns and regrets their behavior. That's what i gather at least. Zack is telling his own story and using comics for inspirations. In my opinion, you aren't supposed to feel heartbreak for Superman's death (at least as much as Tony dying or something.) His death is used to tell a bigger story than just one character. It has a purpose that is very much necessary to progress Clark's journey to becoming the Superman we all know. The world rejected him. They lost him. And they're granted a second chance when he comes back. When that happens, i think he will be the hero everybody looks up at and smiles. It will feel earned.
This is all just my take on it. I hope you guys read this and find your own conclusions :)

    • @ohnofan
      @ohnofan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agreed. All these people who were confused as to why Batman was so violent and killing bad guys or not caring if they died is baffling to me. The movie explains this when Bruce says to Alfred the lines about 20 years in Gotham and criminals are like weeds. Plus you see plainly that Joker has killed Robin. It doesn’t matter which Robin it was. It happened most likely at a time when Batman refused to kill Joker. By letting him live, Batman essentially let Joker kill Robin. He is clearly fed up with fighting a losing battle against the Gotham criminal element that just seems to be endless. Now Superman exists and again, Bruce has lost an entire Wayne building and all his employees let. Bruce has snapped and sees this mission to eliminate this dangerous alien as his way to finally make a real difference.
I do think there are many comic fans who are so versed in those stories and accustomed to the light, fun superhero movies that they literally are incapable of being open minded enough to see a different take on those characters. Granted, BvS could’ve been better and the trailers made it seem much more like an action film rather than the drama it was. However, I feel like it wasn’t really surprising after seeing Man of Steel which established that this was a grounded world rather than the typical fantasy that the world of regular humans would simply accept and celebrate a super powered alien as their hero after others of his kind attempted to destroy the planet.

Of course you'd be in shock and like "why the fuck are you saying that name to me?" And then it's the realization cemented by the name that Clark isn't some demon he's pretty much another kid who grew up on earth with parents and Bruce is about take someone's mother away from them. So of course it sends him into a confused frenzy, and if you were to dull to realize any of that. You've got no hope of you didn't realize that's what he meant by "Martha's not going to die tonight" he's seeing it in his mind as another chance to save his mum and stop Clark loosing his. The intent of Batman at the end of his rope about to butcher an innocent man who he views as an inhuman monster, but then that said 'monster' says something that snaps Bruce back to reality and face the grim fact that he went back on the promise he made to himself and is now the one holding the gun that cut down Thomas and Martha Wayne is a brilliant idea.
It's too bad the moment ruined by the fact that a grown-ass 30-something man is calling his own mother by her first name (nobody does that!) and putting unneeded emphasis on the meaningless coincidence that Batman and Superman both have moms named Martha with a confounded Batman who was two-seconds away from murdering a man barking "WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME!?" like a confused kid.

But I actually know people who casually call their parents by name, I do it too not all the time but when I want their attention or being banterous. But in all fairness that's PTSD for you. People get confused and pretty much panic over things that get them worked up especially if the trigger is the thing that traumatized them in the first place. My Aunt bless her, crawls into a ball and cries if she's put in a dark room like a helpless child, shes a 40 odd year old Teacher (not my business to share why) but that's how easily a rational mind can break when triggered and Bruce Wayne or at the very least this version of him certainly has PTSD with the way he acts in that scene.

If they wanted to do a movie about a jaded, bitter Batman and a disillusioned Superman, fine. But don't make that your second movie!
The fact that they wasted The Death of Superman is just rancid icing on the big "Fuck You" cake. The Death of Superman should have been the DCEU's answer to Infinity War, and instead it's shoehorned into the last 20 minutes of a Batman movie. Yeah, let's face it. Batman v Superman isn't a Batman and Superman movie, it's a Batman movie with Superman in it. For fuck's sake, he barely even says anything in the theatrical cut. Getting back to the point, pop culture had one shot at making The Death of Superman work in live-action and they threw it all away because oops, they didn't bother making enough people like this Superman for his death to matter. The way I always took the Martha scene was that Batman always viewed Superman as an alien, a thing. So when he starts begging for him to save “Martha”, it gives him pause. Then once Lois explains that Martha is Superman’s mother’s name, Batman realises that while Superman may be an alien he was raised as a human, by humans. So if he actively goes out of his way to kill Superman, he’d be no better than the man who killed his parents*. The one thing I will say, I wish they had another excuse to explain Batman’s actions in this movie. It’s heavily implied that Lex knows that Batman is Bruce Wayne, so why not take it a step further by having Lex use Scarecrow’s Fear Gas on him making Batman more unstable than usual, with his mother’s death in particular playing on his mind. Maybe even take it a step further by explaining that Robin’s death was immediately before the Metropolis attack, so that’s also playing on his mind.
*I think this Batman justifies the casualties he causes as “they willingly put themselves in my way, but so long as I don’t go out of my way to kill them then my conscience is clear”. He put Superman into that position, and went out of his way to get him there, so if he killed him then he absolutely would have been, without question, a murderer.
Last note: I think Doomsday was Lex’s backup plan. Just in case they don’t kill each other.

  • @Sarath_R
    @Sarath_R 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Martha scene was about Batman realizing that he has become the same thing that killed his parents in that dark alley, now he is also about to kill an innocent person and let another Martha die. That scene also made Superman more human than he ever was. The opening credits, Bruce's dreams, Alfred's dialogues are the key to this scene. If you were zoning out, the scene wouldn't work. The preferred execution is to just do it with normal lines and exchange of dialogues. Unfortunately this isn't one of those movies.
Why he said Martha instead of Mum is nitpicking. It would eventually reach to a point where he will say Martha anyway. Doomsday is Lex's Ace card. He just didn't know that the creation would be out of his control despite being borne of his blood.

I usually appreciate Eric's appreciation of things, but not so with the Snyder hero films. Snyder has VERY good stylized imagery that does tell story beats, but the story is somehow both overlong and too simplistic. Both this and Man of Steel start out with an initial premise that overall *does* get solved at the point where a better paced film would end, but then Snyder goes and drops a big huge destructive denouement that just extends the film in a shallow attempt to be "epic." Man of Steel didn't really NEED Zod. He could've been great sequel fodder with Man of Steel dealing with a more introductory scenario and Superman coming into his own and becoming the hero that people looked up to as a savior, which as it stands, Superman as the ultimate hero isn't really shown, just barely alluded to. At the same time, BvS didn't NEED Doomsday and the Death of Superman. You could instead craft a story around the tile confrontation in a less convoluted way, particularly with the destruction of MoS's climax as Batman's driving motivation. Then have Doomsday and Superman's death as the THIRD Superman movie.
Basically, these movies try to do too much, with a LOT of over dramatic and stylized imagery that draws attention to itself, while also combating the presentation of the heroes in a tone and grayness that might work for one-off films, but that I think people are resistant to having a cinematic universe built around. MCU is presenting the **Definitive** film version of their heroes, and while they do deviate from the comics, they fit the heroic tone. Here, I don't think the majority of people want _these_ versions, these interpretations, to be the *definitive* film versions of these characters. As such, there''s just a huge emotional disconnect with these films.
I'd have broken down these films totally differently:
Man of Steel: Superman and DCAU introduction with Background Luthor and perhaps Metallo.
A Batman movie, ala The Dark Knight Returns, partially as a response to Superman's return and Gotham's deterioration. But perhaps a more typical Batman depending on how people feel about that Batman, being older and jaded as the "definitive" film version. Either way, a film to get the audience familiar with Batman's perspective.
A Man of Steel sequel: Dealing with Zod and Superman unable to prevent such wide-spread destruction, while expanding the Lois relationship.
BvS: The fallout from Zod leading to a confrontation between Batman and Superman, ending in them maybe having to come together to stop a man-made disaster we see throughout the film, perhaps With the film ending with them still at odds, but not trying to beat each other.
Man of Steel Third Movie: Doomsday and the death of Superman. Batman now respects Superman for his sacrifice. Needs to find other heroes to fill the void he left.
Justice League: The Big threat is here. Perhaps a little Reign of the Supermen in here too. Ends with the possibility of Superman's resurrection.
End of Phase One. Not perfect, but still sort of tied to what they were going for.

This cut of the movie actually rearranges some scenes too.
I will always remember the scenes at Lex Corp with the government folks always confused me in the theatrical cut. Because, in the theatrical cut, you get the scene where he meets them and talks about wanting to import the rock, then it cuts away and we see some completely unrelated scenes. Then we get the scene where the government guy asks Lex what he wants, and Lex asks for access to the crashed ship, and Zod's body. It feels like there's a chunk of time between those two scenes, which makes the movie's timeline feel messy and confusing.
But in the Ultimate Edition, those two scenes are back to back. It's literally one sequence. You even see Holly Hunter walking away in the start of the second scene, so it's obvious that those two scenes are supposed to take place one after the other. It does wonders for making the story flow in a cohesive way.
Honestly, if ever there was an appropriate time to call something "definitive" this was the time to do it. The Ultimate Edition seriously devalues the theatrical cut simply by being more cohesive and easy to follow. Of course, the movie still has to be your cup of tea for you to enjoy it. But the fact of the matter is that the theatrical cut was a muddled mess, and honestly deserved to be so divisive among fans and critics.

Eric's line is not wrong at 31:00. But, actually, the Martha scene explanation is this: Bruce see Superman like a danger alien guy which needs to be stopped before the destruction of more city's buildings (like a walking atomic bomb) and innocents warmed; or worst, like became a villain. That's why the opening act is important. And this isn't because Lex manipulated him. He already thought in that way, based on what he had to deal with 20 years in Gotham and because this is a Batman who lost faith/hope on people - he accepted the figure that Gotham gave to him: a monster who punish criminals and show no mercy anymore. And I understand that for people used to a Batman based at New 52 (like the animated versions or, even, the Nolan) this sounds strange, because is a less "heroic" vision of Batman, which already is a dark character. But the thing is that this Batman would not fit to the purpose of the movie, which is the Dark Knight of Frank Miler. There's no Bat-Family to support him, there's no Justice League yet to help him to deal with his darkness and traumas; the only thing that stops him to embrace his monstrosity figure, and became something similar with his villains, or something like the Batman Who Laughs, is Alfred. So this is the Batman countenance that Snyder is dealing with. So what Lex did was prevent Bruce to see who Superman really is: Clark Kent, a human being.
Then, at Martha's scene, they don't start a friendship because their mothers have the same name, but because Superman has a mother, which is a human and is in danger. By that, he realized that Clark is not the figure that he build in his head, but, since he lost his parents, if Clark's mother dies this could lead a trauma and Superman could be no longer a hero. The same names thing is more like a coincidence, but helped Bruce to figure out faster because of his own trauma.
BUT, even by all that I said, the scene still has problems. Became a meme not necessarily because people were dumb to understand, but I think that the way those dialogues were made, and the way that the scene was shoot in the climax of the fight made people got confused. I, myself, accepted the first time I watch, but it felt strange; this whole line of reasoning that I made took me some couple of times of watches
Now, about the movie, I really like it - even more with the time. I don't think it's perfect, far for that, and I think that a lot of mistakes that people said are true, some are bullshit, but I do really like. And I guess is because I allowed myself to absorb Snyder's vision with a open mind and because I understand that he didn't wanted, or tried, to follow the exact same footsteps from the comics (like Watchmen, *except the ending); but, instead, he wanted to tell a "new story" with his own way to make movies.

Lex created Doomsday because it was the 2nd motivation Lex had in the movie. In the Library inauguration, we saw a peek of the real Lex Luthor during his speech when he breaks for a moment and said "The bittersweet pain among men is having knowledge with no power because that is PARADOXICAL". From this we can know why he hates Superman, coz till the reveal of the Kryptonians and Superman, Lex probably believed that he had true power since he could move governments, but then that idea got smashed when he saw true power.
The 1st motivation of Lex in BvS is to show the world that humans shouldn't put their trust in metahumans and wanted to convince the world that Superman wasn't what they believed him to be.
Then he discovers how to create Doomsday and that solves his 2nd motivation, or he at least believes it solves it. In the movie, he says "Ancient Kryptonian Deformity, blood of my blood", but there is a deleted scene where he also says "Obeys only me". Lex believed that he could control Doomsday, and thus achieve the paradox, having his own knowledge and control true power.
Of course, just like any Lex Luthor, he gets defeated by his own hubris, that he believed he had control of Doomsday just because he created him using his own blood.

Batman sparing Superman's life has absolutely NOTHING to do with their mom's having the same name. This whole time Batman views Superman as an alien being with zero humanity, but the fact that Clark's had a HUMAN mother that, with his last breath, he wishes his enemy to save, that humanizes him and gets Bruce out of his rage. This literally has NOTHING to do with the name "Martha." People need to understand this.

@@11scream You say most people, as if you had a statistic. And you have to take into account that a lot of the setup scenes were cut, which hurt the reception for the cinema release. I get that it's on the nose and could have been done better, but if you pay attention you should get it, I think Marvel really didn't help there either, as that's what people have come to expect from Superhero movies or maybe cinema as a whole, simple four act stories with a couple of setpieces each barely any complex motivations if any never mind a complex story, and everything spelled out literally by characters.

@@tacitus5665 I love it how DC fans blame Marvel, a completely separate company, for why people don’t appreciate BvS more. And how they act like BvS is some intellectual masterpiece on the same level as Inception or something. If the movie was fucking written better more people would’ve understood the Martha scene. It’s really not hard to understand at all, but the movie portrayed it in such a way that it didn’t resonate with audiences. If a significant number of people have a problem with the scene, which they do, then something clearly didn’t work from a directing standpoint.

@@TonyCT7567 Jesus Christ, you're dim. To explain it to you. Marvel make many hero film for 10 years. Films are very successful and entertaining. Have certain characteristics, like easy to follow, focus on tell don't show, bright colours, many quips, people get fans, is biiig mass phenomenon. Marvel has monopoly, so only marvel make hero film. So when hero film is not like Marvel, people be upset. People also get used to straight forward story telling and simple structure, so when film has different structure, and shows not tells, they say writing bad, if writing not bland and quippy, they say writing bad.
Sure, at the end of the day Marvel didn't influence BvS, except maybe for the decision to cut it to two hours for the theatrical version, but you can't deny, that the nass phenomenon that is marvel, hasn't had a major influence on how BvS was received, because people got so used to the style, and were major fans of the films, possibly because of the above described characteristics, and because they weren't able to correctly analyse why they enjoy Marvel and not differentiate between simply liking it and having gotten too used to those traits, BvS got the reaction it got. That Marvel has so many passionate fans, many of them young probably also didn't help, because being a fan of Marvel at best a lot of people didn't care to much about it, at worst, because being a fan if something seems for a lot of people to mean that they can't enjoy anything else, or even have to hate it, was harshly attacked. Now, you can like what you like, I don't care, if you argue well enough, like Eric saying he simply doesn't like moral greys in Super heroes, obviously, since that's kind of the point of the Snyder verse, you'll have a hard time enjoying it, but it's still a valid opinion, you should nonetheless be able to appreciate what BvS does. I'm not gonna judge wether it's a cinematic masterpiece even though I rate it very highly, and I feel like it's underappreciated for very few good reasons, that aside, it's definitely much more unique and creative than 95% of marvel, and it respects the audience as people with an attention span of more than 5 minutes. It's a proper film.
But I feel like if someone talks about a film as an "intellectual masterpiece" or something my case is lost anyway.
