This is unapologetically one of my favorite movies ever. It is by far my favorite film score and I listen to the track “terraforming” probably everyday lol.
This movie’s score is tied with the BVS score for me, especially because of “Beautiful lie” and “you are my world”

I’ve always loved this film. I love how this is like a “first contact” film, how Zack portrayed the overpowered nature of super speed (esp when Faora takes out the soldiers), and that score...I know everyone loves the classic but this Superman theme is my god damn fav. And it was heavily criticized at the time but I’ve always loved Superman killing Zod, and forming Superman’s No-Kill rule around this. The idea of “never again” rather than “never”.
I wouldn't say I _love_ him killing Zod but I don't hate it (he felt forced to and is also utterly distraught at having to do it - I don't need Superman to _never_ do the "wrong" thing but I do need him to care when he does). Got plenty of issues with this film (though on balance I like it) but that's not one.
(and nothing can fill the same place in me that Williams' theme does - it's just the difference between things you experience at 6 and things you experience at, well, a lot older than 6 :) - but the MoS score is fantastic)
Supes killing Zod is absolute unnecessary trash, top to bottom.
1) Oh, you can turn his head so much you break his goddamn neck but you can't turn his head away enough to save those people? GTFOH!!!
2) Taking lives isn't discussed in the movie AT ALL and the dramatic crux of the film is put on that moment. There's no weight to the decision because it doesn't seem like much of a decision. Pa Kent even suggested Clark let children die to keep his identity hidden! How is killing Zod even a problem for Kal after that?
3) And beside his initial subsequent reaction, there's no consequences for killing Zod. No human sees it as a problem and Kal isn't tortured or haunted by his choice to kill. He's happy-go-lucky in the next scene. It's a non-issue! If you have Superman kill someone, there should be repercussions! It's rendered completely arbitrary and falls so flat!
4) And it's a ridiculous notion for Kal-El to have formed his No-Kill rule after killing someone. Having killed someone isn't a prerequisite to understanding that killing is wrong. You have 20+ years of life to form that fucking rule! I mean shit! If you don't have that rule by 16, you're probably a sociopath! The fact that we're never shown Kal struggling with that idea and, instead, we're shown him struggle with "should I make my presence on Earth known" is the biggest disappointment of this movie!
Most of the movie is about the human race not being ready for the news of aliens but his decision to let himself be seen by humanity means fuck all because Zod shows up.
They spend 3 quarters of the movie on a thematic question and immediately rob the protag of any agency by taking his choice in the matter from him
OR
they don't raise thematic questions at all and undercut the climax by hinging it on a choice with no weight to it.

I truly believe this is one of the best superhero movies ever made. The scenes of Clark when he was discovering his powers as a kid and learning he is a alien made me fall in love with this version of Clark Kent. And the scene of when he learns to fly is honestly one of the greatest scenes ever made in comic book movie history.
Plus this honestly is one of the best soundtracks ever made. Hans Zimmer should’ve won an Oscar for this movie.

Sameee. I disliked Superman cuz I thought he was OP, but that scene of him struggling and persevering through the Kryptonian atmospherics to destroy the World Engine was my gateway to loving Superman.

I didn't liked this movie because Superman was not Christopher Reeve style Superman but as time went on I appreciate this movie more and more. I really like how they showed us different Superman who's learning to be Superman
Zack's work is really unapreciated. Christopher nolan worked on this movie to you can see that. The visuals, the depth of these characters portrayed is amazing
when I first saw it, I thought it was okay and then on rewatches over the few years when it like pops up on television I'd watch it I'd be like this is actually pretty good it has a lot of depth to it you don't notice at first and the fact that everyone got all pissed off that Superman killed zod is a strange thing to me given my own upbringing.
Superman is a beacon of hope, that's not Superman that's the Man of steel that we see he's not Superman just yet and so he makes a mistake, or he makes the right choice it's all up to you to decide.
I have been a fan of this movie ever since it came out.
I have never seen the Reeves Superman movies and as far as comics go, I have only read Watchmen...that’s it.
I obviously know Superman cause he’s so prevalent in pop culture, but I have no attachment to the source material/previous adaptations. I feel like that’s definitely part of me liking it as much as I did.

I don't like Snyder's Superman mainly because he seems to think Superman is Doctor Manhattan: an emotionally removed god that other than one or two people has no connection with humanity
Michael Shannon was so good in this film. His "I WILL FIND HIM" forever gives me chills. Such a good villain man.

As someone who generally enjoys MCU content more, MoS is perhaps up there with my top 5 superhero movies. And I love how much Eric is fanboying, but like a proud father!
Over time, this has become my favorite Superman movie.
@@chaost4544 Honestly, I can't disagree with that. My parents bought the Christopher Reeve movies so I grew up on them and have a soft spot for their heart. But MoS is truly unique to me.
@@samuelstephen2762 Cavill's Superman feels the most organic to me. It's the Superman we would get in our current times. I loved Reeves version but his version always felt like a product of the Golden Age of comics and is pretty dated, imo.

Eric is the backbone of the channel. Without him the conversation would usually be dead. Calvins asked "what you think?" Most people would say "It was great" or "it sucked". What we get is "well it makes sense now in BvS!"??? Wow, what an exciting reaction. Also, maybe watch the first film before you watch the sequel. Jesus.
I was upset when I found out people disliked this movie, I really enjoyed it (and still do).

Lol they called it Man of Steel because The Dark Knight was their most popular and most successful superhero movie at the time.
It's called Man of Steel because, at the time, DC sued the Shuster heirs and avoided use the name "Superman" in case they lost.

To this day I still dont understand why this movie was so hated when it released. Only now are people kind of going back to appreciate it. One of the best superhero films imo.
I'll tell you the simple reason why it wasn't well liked....He's not playing Christopher Reeve's Superman and because it was directed by Zack Snyder.
I love the movie and most of the DCEU movies because they're doing something different with the characters. I don't want to see the same type of character again and again.
Let Henry Cavill develop his own version of Superman and Clark Kent. CW already does a Christopher Reeve like Superman on TV. DC is finally embracing their multiverse :)
Because it doesn't pander to cheesy culture like Marvels films do.

When the Kryptonians are powered up with their suits, it’s not the sun giving them powers, it’s earths low gravity, their bodies are naturally adapted to Kryptons naturally harsher conditions.
According to the script it is both yellow sunlight and Earth's environment.

I’m specifically talking about the kryptonians with the suits on, they are only getting the gravity based powers, not the sun related ones (flight, heat vision, etc.)
Super strength is still an extension of the solar induced powers. Well, in comics anyway. But I don’t think Zack would change the canon of the comics when it comes to Superman getting his powers. The level of power yes, but not the method. Yes, they are stronger due to earths gravity being weaker than kryptons, but it would only make them stronger to a certain extent. While Superman is constantly getting stronger the more he remains on earth.
Still the best DCEU movie for me.

On one hand mf butchers Jon Kent’s character so i completely understand the hate
On the other the music is fantastic tells a very good story of an inexperienced Superman who needs to find himself without the usual moral safety net of the would be saints jon and martha

The destruction argument is always a little silly. I get why it’s discussed, it plays a big part in BvS but purely in the context of MoS it still makes complete sense. Clark is doing what he can to stop Zod killing everyone but he’s very inexperienced and has never been in a proper fight before. He cannot fight Zod and save everyone and conversely he would not be able to save everyone even if he focused on helping civilians, Zod would just start killing people directly. It’s simply a realistic fight between Superman and Zod in a city. If he were more experienced or trained he might have been able to move Zod to a less populated area but he was hardly in control of the fight.
I think people wouldn't talk about it today if the consequence of the invasion was explored in a movie & how it effected Clark on the personal level.
I guess another movie before BvS would've served DCEU better.
Antje Traue's Faora was the scene-stealer of this movie. She was an awesome villain. Her speed use against the soldiers was awesome, looked like real life DBZ.
And then she just stands there with her head tilted like an idiot while Elliot from SVU has a one liner before destroying the ship. Her super speed disappeared for some reason.

Zod screaming, "I WILL FIND HIM!" still sends chills. It wasn't just a threat, it was a promise. Of course he does find him, but it was a great moment.

This movie is so criminally underrated.
At first, I thought Jonathan Kent's death was a dumb tornado scene that existed just as another big action set-piece. It's only now that I understand that the scene exists to highlight Kent's belief that his son would not be safe if the world found out what he was. In a way, he sacrificed his life so his kid could live a normal life...until the right time, that is.
Exactly! AND there's the thematic side in that it's a film that's all about choice and free will, and Jonathan _chose_ to die, and Clark had to choose to let him. It works so perfectly to this story.
My problem with it is that the only reason Johnathon died is because he hurt his leg and is an old man. If Clark ran to get the dog instead he would’ve just gotten it no issue and no need for powers, and nobody would’ve batted an eye. It was a pointless death to me.
@@ryanklip24 True! It was due to Jonathan's insistence though to Clark, because he wouldn't risk any chance of Clark being exposed. It's a character flaw at most, and a good one, not a flaw with the film itself.

Zack & Nolan nailed this movie. Best Standalone CBM I’ve ever seen in my life. Nothing even comes close. Hans Zimmer is perfection.
I love how Swanwick being Martian Manhunter is obvious in retrospect even this far back,. When Superman moved toward the mirror everyone took a hasty step back except for him. He was skeptical but never seemed afraid of him.
It was Christopher Reeves, on the behind-the-scenes features, they talk about how they put a couple of frames of his face in the scene when cavil is fighting the world engine.

Also, that scene is my favorite scene of the movie, because it shows that you dont have to have super powers to be a hero. Perry White stayed with that woman and was willing to die beside her just to let her know she wasn't alone.

I love these guys but Aaron is annoying sometimes. He says he doesn’t like something because he doesn’t get it. If all Superman lore follows the sun energy thing, then why does kryptonite have any effect on Superman? Did Aaron forget about kryptonite?
Also, about the suits and the Kryptonian being super strong on earth while wearing the suits, I always thought the suits were like super suits, like what Lex wears. Is that not the case???
Sad how Superman cried when he killed Zod because 1. He didn’t want to kill & 2. Zod was the person he knew that came from his planet & I guess that hit Superman hard.
The reeves movies didn’t even have the budget to do destruction.
Not really the technology either, keep in mind that was made in the 1970’s
Alot of people with their nostalgy goggles choose to ignore this obvious fact; there was no destruction in Reeves Superman movies simply because they were made in the 70's, no money and no tech to do it properly. What we see in Snyder's verse is simply the amount of destruction to be expected when there's a deathmatch of Kryptonian caliber
@@prof1185 In "Superman II" they demonstrate the sort of destruction that would happen if Kryptonians fought (given the effects and budget of the time) and _then_ they explicitly depict Superman moving the fight away from a populated area because of it. It's in the film, no "nostalgia goggles" required :). How the destruction is depicted _is_ a function of era and budget, how Superman _responds_ to it is a difference of approach to the character.
And not an attack BTW but it's "Reeve" - no 's' on the end (just on his chest :).
(i'd counter that die-hard Zack Snyder fans explain a _lot_ of the character choices made by appealing to realism - Clark's depicted as petty and vindictive because "realism", Superman apparently doesn't overly care about wholesale death and destruction because "realism", Jonathan dies the way he does because "realism" etc. etc. All the while, we're watching a movie where the hero can fly because the predominant wavelength of our sun's light is a few hundred nanometres different than the sun where he's from :)

I love how me and Eric have the exact same reaction to the best scenes of this movie, even today I almost cry when Clark and his father are talking in the barn, it's so good!
I love pretty much every movie in the DCEU (Batman v Superman Ultimate Edition is my favourite), but the scene at 18:29, with Superman just going to town on Zod for threatening his mother, is just my all-time favourite ever.
The interrogation scene with the General in the window takes on a whole new meaning when we find out who he really is

It's mostly the same reason 'cause Christopher Reeve's Superman didn't destroy or that Clark could've moved the fight somewhere else.
Clark is fighting someone that's as strong as him, how do you move the fight away...Zod would just move it back towards the population.
Well they could have written it to be any situation, that’s what issue people had with it because you can literally write anything, and Superman that we’ve known for 80yrs would do all it takes to move the fight away from people and the city. As Eric said tho this is a young Superman. I’m fine with it and love it, but I see both ways.
@@nicoblac9368 Dont you think it's odd that people don't bring up this for the New York fight in the Avengers? Shouldnt the Avengers have moved the fight away from New York as well? I don't understand how people can expect these new heroes to know exactly what to do at all times, especially given the kind of character Clark is in this movie.
@@nicoblac9368 Oh, yea..of course :) We've had a live action superman in the 40's, 50's 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's, 2010's which is a long time with a new superman....so rebooting superman with new actor is very hard because of all the legacy it carries.
@@Cryme69 one, the mcu literally did a whole movie about mass destruction during the NY fight, and two I think it’s down to the fact that the Avengers don’t really have the same values as Superman. Iron Man has a hero complex Thors a god, Hawkeye and Black Widow are assassins and the Hulk is a monster. They don’t care as long as they save the day. However Superman, values human life above all, he was born on Krypton but raised here. So it’s pretty strange to see him barrelling though buildings without giving a second though to who might be inside.
Just wondering since you're doing this for Justice League can you do the same thing with 3 previous Legendary Monsterverse movies for Godzilla vs Kong when we're close to it?
I don't think they have the time in their schedule but I think all of them have seen them besides maybe Eric and Aaron.
I mean they'll inevitably react to Godzilla vs Kong plus only Calvin hasn't seen Man of Steel so I think they would still watch it even if only one of them hadn't fully seen it before. Plus I think 2 or 3 of them haven't watched Skull Island
The conversation Clark has with Zod in his mind about rebuilding Krypton on earth is paralleled by both the conversation with Diana and Ares, and Enchantress and The Suicide Squad. They are all presented with a choice. “I can’t be a part of this”.
If I'm not mistaken, all based on the conversation Jesus had with Satan with Satan offering Jesus power over the Earth and showing him all that could be his. DC really leans heavily into Judeo-Christian mythos. Even Wonder Woman was more Paradise Lost with Ares than greek mythology.
Man of Steel is the best DCEU film and one of my favorite comic book films ever. Its extremely underrated.

Aaron really over thinks things. It's pretty clear Kal El is struggling on the ship because it's built for a kryptonian atmosphere. It's like being on Krypton where his powers would be gone. Even with the absorption of the sun. When they are on earth even if they have suits they are on earth in it's atmosphere gaining the power of the sun. Whereas when the mask comes off they are fully exposed and experience what Clark did as a kid.

Aaron clearly likes the Marvel formula better than the mythological approach, which is totally fine. But it shouldn't be judged in comparison to the Disney MCU because they're completely different things. The DC approach is perfectly legitimate for these characters.
I find it best described as the subtitle of the games done by WB Interactive and NetherRealm studios, GODS AMONG US
Well, that and he enjoys the CW shows more. I honestly think that people seem to think MCU is the only way to make a universe in. DC and Marvel will sadly always be compared.
DCEU is about Gods living among us & how they're different than us while MCU seem to humanize the characters to show how we're not so different after all.
It's personal preference i guess.
Also, DC animated shows we're closer to the later idea.

There are many DC themes which can be added in this list and most of them are memorable. The Dark Knight, The wonder Woman theme, BVS Beautiful lie, Flight, John Williams' Superman, Danny Elfman's Batman, JL animated series theme, The red capes are coming, etc

This video legit showcases the 3 types of ppl that watch Snyder films lmao. Guy on the left who's like a kid in wonder world appreciating everything and seeing all the little cool details while being very immersed in the world. Guy in the middle who's noticing cool stuff here and there, but generally lukewarm about the whole experience; it's not the highlight of his day but it wasn't bad either. And then you have the grouch on the right with his claws off body language, drunk on haterade and can't appreciate anything Snyder does.

It makes much more sense that they're engineered to be sterile or something but Jor-El worked around it.

I thought it was pretty easily understood. He felt that way because he killed the last of his kind...and thus he’s truly alone. I actually loved this movie. From Hans Zimmers score to the DBZ fight scenes. 😂 Just had that epic feel to it. The world engine scene was incredible. He’s truly different from even his own people. He flew through the World Engine which basically was saying he could fly on Krypton which no one was doing there.
I'm not the biggest fan of this movie, but that first flight scene, combined with the soundtrack, is one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen.

I loved this movie. You all seem to get it, others I’ve seen just don’t seem to understand it - he’s only been SUperman for like a day lol. Otherwise, he simply saves people as things happen within his general vicinity. He never LOOKED for people to save.
I'm really excited for Zack Snyder's JL, so this is a really good way of preparing for it by rewatching MoS and BvS with you guys 👌

The atmosphere on the ship was of krypton. So naturally superman loses all his powers.
But as soon as Jor El changes the atmospheric composition to Earths, he gains his powers back.
The question of whether superman can only use his powers in front of the sun or not is explained many a times in the comics. Like how can he uses his powers at night on Earth with no sun?
The answer is superman's body cells stores the energy. Hence when at morning in the sun, he is gaining powers as well as storing them. So at night, he can use them without the sun.
So on the ship if the atmospheric composition was of Krypton's, its understandable that he loses his powers. Even the stored energy in his cells gets dormant. We know that krypton had a red sun and we know that superman loses his powers when near red sun's radiation.
@@gollyjunior6393 you are correct in your observation. Also, not just being overcome with senses on the ship, kryptonians also would have gotten powers as superman. But thay didn't happen as well.
I guess you cannot explain everything. Also, I try not to go into too much detail in superhero movies cause we wouldn't be able to answer all the questions. Plus it would steal the magic of watching the movie itself and getting that experience of the unknown.
Just to tack on, the Kryptonians literally DIDN'T need to terraform to survive on earth. But those that were left were warriors and all they knew is to go in and terraform planets.

At the beginning, Jor-El says that Earth's atmosphere is more nourishing than Krypton's is, and also has a weaker gravity. So to me it seems similar to the effects of if you were to go to the moon or Mars, or any other planet with a weaker atmosphere, without a helmet on. I think the yellow sun is what supercharges his cells to do extraordinary things like heat and telescopic vision.

I disn't think it was that Earths atmosphere is involved in his powers, it was more that the Kryptonian atmosphere poisons his ability to use his powers.
This was one of the most profound and interesting post-movie discussions I've seen to date. Period.

The reason Superman kept fighting Zod, even with all the destruction, but killed him in the train station is that was the first time in their fight where he tried to kill humans in front of him just to make a point. Sure his actions led to human deaths before this, but now Zod was trying to exterminate people just because Superman was watching. And the reason Superman seemed to lose his strength on the ship was that he was reacting to the atmosphere, and then was unconcious.... As soon as he woke up he was strong because he NEVER LOST IT.
