My absolute favorite Star Trek ship! Had the toy as a kid and my main on STO pilots a Vor’ral that has been entirely switched back to Vor’cha. Love this thing.
One improvement the Vor'cha has over it's predisessors (D-7, K'tinga, and bird of prey) is a much thicker and stronger interconnecting neck section. The necks on the previous classes were so thin, one could theoretically cut the ship in half with a single weapon strike.
This is definitely my favorite design of a non-Starfleet ships. My first time seeing the ship design was in the PSP Starfleet " Tatical Assault" game back in the day. I just really fell in love with it when I first saw the design. I also believe that is where I fell in love with Miranda-Class-like Starships.

Brilliant design and love it. The thing was that even though very powerful in Redemption it faced a Bird of Prey. It had the weapons knocked out in 1 shot and the shields lost almost all their power and the impulse engine on the port side got damaged. I know they were trying to make the Duras a power hand but heck that ship should have shredded them. Then completely different in DS9.
I really want to see some design takes on 26th, 29th and 32nd Klingon, Cardassian and Romulan ships. Yes for 32 century Romulan and Vulcan are one on Nivar but the dialog made it clear that the Romulans maintain some independent behavior in their unification
My favourite klingon ship both in terms of design but also in Fleet formations as it's a perfect mix of being powerful enough to act as a flag ship but fast enough to even fight against smaller ships like the defiant while supporting birds of prey wings
I always wanted the vorcha + negvar to have kinda like disruptor lance cannon like the alternated galaxy dreadnaught. It's a huge cannon that can do crazy ammount of damge, kinda like a opening shot. Any ship that could survive it would either be damaged or lost it's shields and systems. The weapon cant be fired in succession like the the Phaser spinal lance. But thats fine since klingons would like to savor the battle. Imagine how dangerous it could be a well timed shot.
1900 crew seems a bit outlandish, even if you pack them in. I’d guess a more reasonable number would be 200-250 permanent crew, max, and 500 “warriors” being carried to deploy.
Honestly, the Vor'cha seemed like the most _Federation_ of Imperial Klingon ships. Large, but maneverable. Powerful, but fast. Able to operate on long missions independently. It's an Excelsior or Sovereign. Meanwhile, the Federation had nothing comparable to the nimble attack ship that was the Bird of Prey until the Defiant had its shakedown (emphasis, according to Sisko and O'Brien, on the "shake")/
Plenty of space under those wings. I wonder what kind of variants they could make of this class by attaching modules and other compartments down there?
Clever having a Negh'Var in the background of the B roll. Also as an opinion, I think I love the Beefy ole Negh'Var more, but I sure can respect a Vor'Cha bearing down on me... not a bad way to die. lol
STO has a even bigger battleship that replaced the Negh'Var class thar came with space to carry two bird of prey, a couple of runabout size shuttles, and a squadron of fighters.
Love the Vorcha. Far more than the Negvar(sp?). However, I just finished a rewatch of DS9 and realized this thing got embarrassed in that series. I recall at least four shots of it being pantsed in the lunch room during the Dominion War as well as being led on the leash by Worf over Bajor. Poor porkchop.
Compared to his mission role, and available ships. Hell, in the speech before Worf kills Gowron, Gowron mentions that 15 of these ships (battle-cruisers - could include K'tingas too) going in first. Speed can be weird in ST - as Dominion ships - famously slower than the Allied forces - tracked the BOP's whilst cloaked and were going to over take them, making his whole reason not to take them pointless. No, it won't match a BOP - but for it's size it's very effective. It kept up well with the Defiant during Way of the Warrior.
@@Hjered_of_Reno On a slightly different note - Star Trek IS a political show. It's why I find most interesting about it. But back to Vorcha - RA10H56 has got SOME of it right - although Atmospheric raids weren't a Star Trek staple as most of their assets were space bound. But he does have it right, and as said, the Martok raids just were suited better to BOPs
It was one of the character details about Martok I liked the most-he'd rather lead an attack wing of small, maneuverable birds of prey than command the battlefield from the rear on board one of these battleships.
Rather, going at top speed limits the effectiveness of the cloak. The D'deridex class has the same issue, with one going full tilt maximum warp being detectable to the Enterprise even while cloaked. Of course this means, if you want to remain stealthy you would have to limit your warp speed, so it is technically correct.
Klingon engineers definitely prefer to continue iterating a successful design until most or all of the growth potential is maxed out. Then they have no choice but to go back to the drawing board. Still, I would also agree that the Vorcha wouldn't have been possible without some kind of exchange of commercial grade and/or non-strategic level technology from the Feds. Some or all of the equipment that was beyond klingon means at the time could have also been reverse engineered from battlefield salvage and examples/specs acquired from third parties, though. After the civil war, when the design went into series production for the KDF and maybe the fleets of the wealthier (and most loyal?) great houses, both parties are still having to rely on large numbers of D7 and Ktinga hulls. One might think a more modern successor or two for these would be a greater priority than a battleship prototype. While the Neghvar/Voodieh has featured prominently in possible and alternate timeliness in both TNG and Voyager, I see the Vorcha as a more practical basis for heavy or battlecruiser development for awhile.
Not being able to fire whilst cloaked isn't a design flaw. It's a treaty stipulation. Its also incompatible with Klingon notions of honourable combat. Using stealth to close with an enemy is perfectly acceptable. Doing the space going equivalent of shooting him in back from cover isn't.
Well, Chang would beg to differ... Besides, the one cloak you could fire through up until the Scimitar wasn't able to completely mask the ship's impulse trail, which made it great as a assasination tool, but proved to be a fatal flaw in open combat. After the first shot fired, the opponent would know there was a ship present and could actively search for the ion trail and it is very likely Starfleet made this standard protocol, should someone try to use such a system again. The Scimitar was probably able to mask everything thanks to its sheer size and proportionate power reserves.
The look of this design never quite worked for me, and I think my problem is all those bridges. Maybe the designers (in or out of world) just could never decide which they liked best so threw them all in. Maybe it would be cool to have a mutiny in which different factions each get their own bridge. :) Incidentally, the forward bridge looks like the tail of a Cardassian Galor class, and indeed, both look like the forward part of the Draconia from Buck Rogers...
I can’t help but notice that if you turn the Vor’cha around and remove the nacelles, it bears a resemblance to a Cardassian Galor class. If I remember correctly, the Vor’cha appeared in TNG before the Galor. So I wonder if the filming model of the Galor was actually a kitbash of a Vor’cha filming model. Maybe I’ve been living under a rock, but I can’t find any info on this. Can anyone shed any light?
They do look similar. The Vorcha model came first but the Galor came not too long afterward. Both models were freshly made rather than kitbashed. The Vorcha was designed to be the new standard Klingon ship, and it was the first Klingon ship made specifically for the 24th Century as the K'Tinga and BOP were legacy ships from the TOS films. For the Galor, they needed a new standard ship for their new antagonist race. So both were built from scratch at near the same time. That may be why they share some commonalities.
@@irregularassassin6380I don’t understand either. They mass produce bat’leths to stock onboard armories in all their ships. They mass produce small arms (disruptor pistols and rifles) for the same purpose. Pretty much every single Klingon trains with all three meaning their civilian arms market rivals that of current day America. (Yes, I’m an American.) We don’t hear of their ship main weapons breaking down and needing replacement meaning they’re very robust, but being very practical about their weapons they must have spares aboard all their ships. All of their ships appear to be armed. I don’t know of any unarmed Klingon vessels, hence they must mass manufacture many grades of capital weapons. If there’s any aspect of their weapons industry that could be called “stunted” it might be their R&D but Klingons are big on “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” thinking. What they have has worked so we don’t see revisions or new models as often as with Starfleet weaponry (compare the multiple types of hand phaser seen in the run of TNG and VOY from Dustbuster to Cobra, and the many phaser rifle variants).
The catastrophic destruction of Praxis, coupled with the empire’s underlying feudal structure, lead to massive decentralization of power and wealth over the first half of the 24th century. Efficiency in industrial design and production typically requires a significant degree of centralization. It makes a great deal of sense that the empire’s forces would be dominated by small, easily crewed designs like the B’rel. The houses, great and small, could produce and operate such vessels on their own, without the support of a centralized industrial infrastructure.
So the Klingon fleet structure was Battlecruisers anchoring the centre with fleets of Attack Ships [Birds of Prey]. _So they have a similar force doctrine to the Dominion?_ And yet Starfleet went straight back to just capital ships, forgetting the lessons of the Dominion War and the effectiveness and utility of the Defiant and Saber classes. They never learn..... [*Looks at fleet formation post synth revolt and the Borg overidding Starfleet as they emerged from the spacial anomaly.] Hopefully the Klingons finally design a replacement for the Bird of Prey. Even Starfleet is now using a Excelsior 2 class.
The Vor’cha is my favorite Klingon ship. I’ve been wanting to unlock it in Star Trek Timelines, but unfortunately it’s locked behind 100k Honor. I use my Honor points to buy 4 star citations instead :/

For the Galor, they needed a new standard ship for their new antagonist race. So both were built from scratch at near the same time. That may be why they share some commonalities.
This ship is the only example of Klingon design as it was extremely progressive of them to come up with their only multi-role vessel
You'd think as a warrior culture, they'd have a robust weapons industry. But everything they have seems stunted.
What do you mean?
They don't really like energy weapons, they use them when they need to but the really prefer using a blade in your face.
(Yes, I’m an American.)
We don’t hear of their ship main weapons breaking down and needing replacement meaning they’re very robust, but being very practical about their weapons they must have spares aboard all their ships.
IMO the Klingons focused too much on combat and not enough on engineering, economics and logistics
The first thing that came to mind was the Vorcha race from Mass Effect.
Same here
So the Klingon fleet structure was Battlecruisers anchoring the centre with fleets of Attack Ships [Birds of Prey].
_So they have a similar force doctrine to the Dominion?_
And yet Starfleet went straight back to just capital ships, forgetting the lessons of the Dominion War and the effectiveness and utility of the Defiant and Saber classes.
They never learn..... [*Looks at fleet formation post synth revolt and the Borg overidding Starfleet as they emerged from the spacial anomaly.]
Hopefully the Klingons finally design a replacement for the Bird of Prey.
What is the difference between bussard collectors and ram scoops
Kinda sounds like the Viscous scavenger race from Mass effect.
Everyone on the one
"HELLO ALL RICK HERE"!
The sisters should have had this in star trek 7
I'll take 2 please
An evacuation pod doesn’t seem like a thing you’d expect on a Klingon ship 🤔
Not all ship destruction is the result of battle, that would not be an honourable way to go
Not a bad ship at all!
One of my favorite Klingon ships
