I think what makes it such a great episode for me is just how triumphant squidward gets to feel. There arent really any other times we get to see him that happy. And it was all because everyone got their shit together at the last minute. Just for him.
Exactly, even if it's just for a single day, Squidward finally gets a full on win. The dude tries really hard to improve his skills, and it's funny to laugh at the jokes made at his expense, but when an episode finally takes the injustice of his life seriously, it feels really good to watch.
6:37 the way Squidward just inexplicably lays down in a fetal position with absolutely no emotion in his face as a response to the situation always gets me
Them playing it straight with Squidward actually succeeding in the end almost feels like a twist ending. Most cartoons back then would always end with the main character's plans failing, especially if the episode was focused on someone like Squidward. It makes it feel more cathartic when everything works out as you're almost expecting him to fail from the start.
Chocolate With Nuts is my favorite but Band Geeks would probably be a close second, tied with Wet Painters. There's a reason those episodes are so talked about, because they're really funny and creative
I think it and culture shock do great at utilizing the whole cast. It really adds so much character to each episode seeing a good portrayal of the whole town. Makes bikini bottom feel alive
It also works so well because you can really feel the emotion and triumph Squidward had for once, especially at the end and how it wasn’t played for laughs for the most part. You knew this was a big event and payoff for the character that would never be matched again!
One aspect of this episode I often see overlooked is how the final concert scene is itself the punch line of a joke set up by the entire episode. We witness firsthand how terribly the citizens of Bikini Bottom have performed and highlight how they haven't improved since the beginning. But after taking one night to get practice seriously, we see the contrast in their performance to a comical degree. Making the performance as awesome as it is makes the joke that much funnier, since we've ramped up the contrast as much as possible. All this is in addition to the somewhat off-the-wall joke that Squidward was preparing everyone to play the Super Bowl all along, one of the only times pre-movie where the cast make direct contact with humans. The scene being such a feel-good moment is also important for the tone of the scene. While we can laugh at how ridiculous it is that they improve so much, making it a moment of victory for virtually all of Bikini Bottom gives the scene the needed gravitas to take it seriously, making it much more than just a funny joke. Even though them doing it all for Squidward is also a joke, it's still a heartwarming moment that perfectly captures the spirit of the show.
I really don't like how people use the word "overrated" nowdays, it just feels like most them use it whenever something gets too popular and they just don't like it while not having any good reasons why besides the fact is very popular. Now, I am not saying that eveything that is very popular is very necessarily great far from it but I feel like most of them don't even understand the meaning of the word anymore.
While it is correct that some people may misuse the word sometimes, it is honestly true that Band Geeks is an overrated episode, it gets brought up WAY too many times in the SpongeBob fandom and when it is brought up, its always the same song and dance with the same 3 quotes talked about to DEATH, some people are extremely annoyed by this episode being brought up and the discussions bringing nothing new to the table.
I don't mind "thing being popular" but "thing having absolute toxic waste as a fanbase that does not accept criticism so I don't want to interact with it" has also gotten me called a contrarian (not the case with this episode, btw)
My top 10 episodes: 10 - Mimic Madness 9 - Wet Painters 8 - Shanghaied 7 - Frankendoodle 6 - Krusty Krab Training Video 5 - Christmas Who 4 - Chocolate With Nuts 3 - The Camping Episode 2 - Dying For Pie 1 - Band Geeks
Band Geeks is my second favorite episode (Chocolate With Nuts is first) and honestly i feel like the SpongeBob fans calling this episode bad or overrated are just wanting attention so i say we just ignore people saying this episode has flaws cause they're just saying random nonsense for nothing but attention we can still enjoy this from mayonnaise to 6:03 and of course to SWEET VICTORY
Ya know rewatching the “is mayonnaise an instrument” part like - plankton prior saying he’s used instruments of torture….like tf plankton canonically has tortured people
I feel like trying to assert anything has “objective quality” nowadays is a no-no, that everything is subjective and what’s good is 100% up to the viewer, that people can’t separate “I don’t care for this” from “this is bad”. You don’t have to love Band Geeks to understand its merit and the quality of its writing.
I respect your opinion on Band Geeks. I don't think it's *the best* in terms of comedy, but it's definitely the best in terms of story telling. An episode doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs a good message and relatability, which this episode nails on both fronts.
I saw this episode as a kid when it first aired and my tape ran out of room and didnt record the whole episode. It was so disappointing but amazing at the same time. Still my favorite episode to this day.
I loved this episode as a kid and i was born after season 3 was made its not even nostalgia its just a amazing ep. Maybe i just love squidward and like to see him get a occasional W
I mean the end sequence alone makes it the best episode and the rest is also great, especially the band practice stuff. If it's not your personal favorite, that's fine, but don't act like it's not obvious why it is the favorite episode of many people.
Part of it is definitely that no one fucks up at the end. No funny scenario. No chasing sponge or Patrick around as a closer. No disappointment face and wah-waah slow music to send it off. Collaborated efforts of people that usually fuck up making a depressed character like squidward get his biggest win ever I think. That's the best part. The song fading out over his freeze frame of joy is squiward's best moment ever. All in his rival's face too
I love band geeks but here me out... I love Graveyard shift. But that's probably just the fact that it's the only thing i really remember when i was very young (Band geeks is definitely second favorite)
Yeah this is my fav episode.. I love this episode so much..so well structured has so many good gags and sweet victory is a banger i understand if people think it’s overrated but personally this episode is just perfect to me

i feel like overrated is a pointless word. if it's rated highly it's because it's popular and probably for a reason. it's whether or not the reason is a good one or a bad one that matters.
I'm kind of in the middle. It's by no way a bad episode but its also not a favorite episode of mine. If I had to rank season 1-3 it would be somewhere in the middle ranks.
i think Band Geeks is really good, one of the best for sure, but I'm not sure I'd call it the best. There are many other episodes that show different dynamics and are just as 'peak spongebob' as band geeks was. My top 10, in no particular order. not that anyone cares Graveyard Shift (spooky, extremely memorable, funny, lots of gags, nosferatu) Band Geeks (amazing squidward wins episode, very funny, a good plot, villain to overcome, and doesnt focus on the usual plots. soooo many funny gags like patrick screaming, big meaty claws, playing taps after the 2 guys explode) Frycook Games (Plankton and Krabs in a fun competitive dynamic outside of their usual 'steal the formula' plotline. Plus a lot of hilarious jokes like the fish sticks, my name's not rick, etc.) Shanghaied (scary, patchy cameo, so many strange and creative elements like the zipper dimension, and an open ending) Frankendoodle (lots of hilarious scenes, unique plot, where's the leak ma'am?) Chocolate With Nuts (CHOCOLAAAAAAAAAAAATE, so many funny scenes and random moments thrown in like patrick saying i love you, etc.) SB-129 (obvious reasons) Pizza Delivery (awesome funny episode that hinges on spongebob and squidward's character dynamics, and the ending where Squidward helps spongebob is really satisfying) Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III (introduces man-ray which adds worldbuilding, patrick had me dying in this episode, loved the gags like 'orb of confusion' and seeing all the creative gadgets) Survival of the idiots (takes characters out of their normal habitats and makes a bunch of hilarious scenes, (open sesame, dirty dan, at taxpayer's expense) and a genuinely scary version of Sandy) Honorable Mentions: Rock Bottom, Sailor Mouth, Wet Painters, Imitation Krabs, The Camping Episode, Welcome to the Chum Bucket
Saying you're a spongebob fan but you don't like band geeks or think it's at the very least top 2 episodes ever is, insane. Totally wack, those things are mutually exclusive! it's like you saying you like women but also want women to be only represented as ugly people in media
Band Geeks is overrated as I think there are funnier episodes and there’s lots of animation errors in it, but it’s still on my Mt Rushmore. The mayonnaise instrument joke for self serving reasons is my favourite SpongeBob joke of all time. People have misconstrued the word overrated. Band Geeks is kinda like vanilla ice cream. Vanilla ice cream and Band Geeks are overrated but they are still great
2:29 So the episode is bad because Pearl and co are only holding their instruments _some of the time?_ Well, a bunch of episodes have them _never_ hold an instrument, so I guess those episodes are worse.
I’ll admit I think the episode is somewhat overrated but like - it’s not a bad episode. I’d still say it’s a great one, there’s just some episodes I prefer and think are funnier (Chocolate with Nuts and Krusty Towers)
Overrated doesn’t mean it’s a bad episode, it’s very good but I’d rate it as middle of the pack for the first 3 seasons, there are just so many episodes that are better

Twitter having bad opinions!?!? 😱😱😱 Seriously though I don't know if Band Geeks is the "best" episode of Spongebob or not, I just know that its a fantastic episode. I think my favourite episode is The Fry Cook Games probably, but that is mostly because it was the only Spongebob episode my brother had downloaded on his laptop that got handed down to me.
I like this episode, I think it’s great, but I just don’t like it when this episode is brought up and the description and talk about it is pretty much just copy and pasted from the previous person that talked about it, with the same mayonnaise quote being repeated to the point that it genuinely annoys me at this point. again, I don’t think this episode is bad in any way but the SpongeBob fandom NEEDS a new episode to talk about, I remember when even the spongeboomers at least would bring up a big variety of pre movie episodes with this one included of course, but now all I see is discussion for this episode and Pizza Delivery.
2:40 you misunderstand the intent of this video. This is a cinemasins style video. It’s not trying to criticize the episode it’s just pointing out animation errors and oversights. I guess some people enjoy that kind of video because it’s a whole genre on TH-cam at this point. But yeah it’s not saying band geeks is bad, these videos are typically just titled “everything wrong with [episode/movie name]”
6:05 I never noticed it before but wtf kind of instrument does Patrick have stuck on him? Like I assume like myself most people assumed it’s a trombone. But looking at it now, that is not a trombone it’s like a weird love child beteeen a trumpet and a trombone. The slide portion doesn’t even connect to the horn.
Look man, I’m glad you’re feeling better but it IS just an opinion you know? Like I thought the episode was okay but I think there are plenty more episodes that beat it. “Fry Cook Games” (Season 2) “Graveyard Shift” (Season 2) “Goodbye Krabby Patty” (Season 9) “SB-129” (Season 1) “Party Pooper Pants” (Season 3) And you pretty much get the point
To be honest, I don’t think I even have a favourite episode of SpongeBob It’s just one of those shows where there’s too many good episodes to choose from
Normally people use the word for things substantially overrated I suppose. Because I think if I thought something wasn’t the best episode but still up there I would just put forward an episode I think beats it. Overrated I see come up more when someone thinks something is meh or outright bad but everyone else thinks is good. Not sure why it’s hard to say though. It’s just two words mashed together, and you say it perfectly throughout the video.
band geeks had a crazy reputation amongst millennial fans in the 2000s-2010s and it was kind of annoying considering all the other equally good s2 episodes. now that that's died down it's easier to just appreciate the episode for what it is. survival of the idiots is my all-time favorite as far as pure watchability and jokes go (and is slightly underrated)
As someone who isn't the biggest fan of Band Geeks, and watched the first 3 Seasons of SpongeBob and mostly enjoyed them, i'm gonna take my sense on why i don't think it's anywhere near the best episode of SpongeBob. The Episode isn't really that funny to me personally, the part with the fight is funny, as well as the flag twirlers flying into the air balloon and exploding, and SpongeBob's motivating the band is pretty funny, but nothing else really intrigued me. Most of the episode is just Squidward getting a bunch of people to play band, and it's just them learning to play instruments which doesn't intrigue me much as a plot. Yes, the ending to the episode is AMAZING, and SpongeBob encouraging everyone to stay in Squidward's band is heartwarming, but everything leading up to it is kinda just ok to me. It has a great ending, but the stuff leading up to it is just alright. I don't really think Band Geeks is "mid" just kind of just an alright SpongeBob Episode. It definitely isn't bad at all, I just don't enjoy it too much compared to a lot of other episodes, it's a perfectly serviceable episode. I'd say episodes like Mermaid and Barnacle Boy 5, Wet Painters, Shanghaied, Can You Spare a Dime, and Dying For Pie are much better episodes.
Band geeks was my favorite episode of spongebob but I feel like there are more episodes that are my favorite like the episode where spongebob works for plankton
I think Band Geeks is objectively a great episode but to say it should be everyone’s favorite is ridiculous when there’s also a lot of other great SpongeBob episodes. My personal favorite is “SpongeBob Meets the Strangler” but that doesn’t mean I dislike Band Geeks or anything.
SpongeBobtwt is funny because they will say stuff like band geeks and chocolate with nuts is actually garbage and then glaze a pal for gary & squid baby calling them "misunderstood ambitious cinematic masterpieces of fine writing"
He has mentioned a few post movie episodes he likes but I think he’s said before he thinks the quality went down the further you get from the movie Which I somewhat agree with I mean I think post season 5 is where the quality starts to go down more noticeably.
I think what makes it such a great episode for me is just how triumphant squidward gets to feel. There arent really any other times we get to see him that happy. And it was all because everyone got their shit together at the last minute. Just for him.

wait there's person that hate this episode?
2:40 you misunderstand the intent of this video. This is a cinemasins style video. It’s not trying to criticize the episode it’s just pointing out animation errors and oversights. I guess some people enjoy that kind of video because it’s a whole genre on TH-cam at this point. But yeah it’s not saying band geeks is bad, these videos are typically just titled “everything wrong with [episode/movie name]”
band geeks is probably my favorite episode. chocolate with nuts in a close second.
Band geeks is actually a great episode however my #1 favorite episode is the pilot episode comprised of help wanted and reef blowers
“Fry Cook Games” (Season 2)
“Graveyard Shift” (Season 2)
“Goodbye Krabby Patty” (Season 9)
“SB-129” (Season 1)
“Party Pooper Pants” (Season 3)
And you pretty much get the point
> Party Pooper Pants
Who invited bro on the team 😭
Reminds me if when Peter did not care for The Godfather
It insists upon itself
How the hell can people hate on "Band Geeks"?
I had this episode on the GBA episode cart 😅
Me to the haters: YOU WATCH YOURE MOUTH!
The SpongeBob monologue in this episode is my favorite of all time
To be honest, I don’t think I even have a favourite episode of SpongeBob
It’s just one of those shows where there’s too many good episodes to choose from
people are just ragebaiting
Normally people use the word for things substantially overrated I suppose. Because I think if I thought something wasn’t the best episode but still up there I would just put forward an episode I think beats it. Overrated I see come up more when someone thinks something is meh or outright bad but everyone else thinks is good.
Not sure why it’s hard to say though. It’s just two words mashed together, and you say it perfectly throughout the video.
this take is from a contrarian being a contrarian
band geeks had a crazy reputation amongst millennial fans in the 2000s-2010s and it was kind of annoying considering all the other equally good s2 episodes. now that that's died down it's easier to just appreciate the episode for what it is.
survival of the idiots is my all-time favorite as far as pure watchability and jokes go (and is slightly underrated)
I'd say episodes like Mermaid and Barnacle Boy 5, Wet Painters, Shanghaied, Can You Spare a Dime, and Dying For Pie are much better episodes.
ripped pants is obviously the best episode though
My favorite episode is pizza delivery.
I could never pick A “Best SpongeBob Episode” there’s way too many!
Wait, people think Band Geeks is mid?
Band geeks was my favorite episode of spongebob but I feel like there are more episodes that are my favorite like the episode where spongebob works for plankton
I think Band Geeks is objectively a great episode but to say it should be everyone’s favorite is ridiculous when there’s also a lot of other great SpongeBob episodes. My personal favorite is “SpongeBob Meets the Strangler” but that doesn’t mean I dislike Band Geeks or anything.
GET YOU'RE FEET OUT OF MY EYESOCKETS
4:36 Was Plankton's line removed in some countries? I don't remember it being there
it's really good
SpongeBobtwt is funny because they will say stuff like band geeks and chocolate with nuts is actually garbage and then glaze a pal for gary & squid baby calling them "misunderstood ambitious cinematic masterpieces of fine writing"
Yes, contrarians exist. It's ok, let them be wrong in peace.
man I love this episode and sqidward is some what responsible for at least two deaths 😄
It’s not my favorite SpongeBob episode, but it’s still really amazing.
It's uh, it's decent
Twitter man.
does awe actually like any post movie episode or only seasons 1-3
Only Season 1-3 + the first movie. Treats everything else like they’re worse then Hitler
He has mentioned a few post movie episodes he likes but I think he’s said before he thinks the quality went down the further you get from the movie
Which I somewhat agree with
I mean I think post season 5 is where the quality starts to go down more noticeably.
@@kaylaa2204 yeah but post sequels quality is amazing so
@ …what do you mean by “post sequels” what sequels?
Probably either Season 4-8 or Season 9-present?
