I wonder how a recipe for Slurm would be like. That'd be a fun idea for a Futurama themed party, popplers and Slurm. For some reason, I imagine Slurm tasting like a lemon-lime and green apple mix.
Just be careful. It’s highly addictive.
It tastes like worm behind
@@Anonimityismythingjust like how honey tastes like Bee behind.
I always imagined it tasting like Mountain Dew 😛 been ages since I last had that stuff though lol
@@dragon1130 beehind
I always saw poplers as a combination of fried shrimp and tater tots, the coating made of shredded potatoes.
If a "Botched" episode of this one airs I'm blaming you and you only.
that sounds scrumptious
That sounds AMAZING
I just equated them to popcorn chicken haha.
@@saitodosan9377 Yeah that or as done here popcorn shrimp. Wonder if doing the marinade way would work for them as well (I use mustard and mayo with some msg for chicken, marinade for 1-24 hours and then just flour and fry)
I was thinking these would be more of a "shrimp nugget" or a shrimpy hush puppy rather than a whole fried shrimp. Like a chicken nugget, they'd be ground/chopped and formed into a patty or ball, then breaded and fried. You could add all kinds of interesting additions like green onions or shredded cabbage to the ground shrimp mix. Plus, you could stretch the amount of shrimp to a really enormous batch of Popplers.
Exactly what I thought they would be, more or less the exact recipe of Hush Puppies from Long John Silvers & minced shrimp
How would that work in the show
@@IrmaU94it wouldn’t but if someone wants it to be a hush puppy then why not
@aduckofsomesort Binging with Babish is about trying to recreate food from movies and show as accurate as possible. Now i dont think the aliens were ground in Futurama.
That honestly just sounds like the shrimp tempura that my buddy from Tokyo makes.
Even though fry and bender describe them as shrimp and prawns. Since they are omicronian which are scaly I always kinda guessed they were like fried Gator.
That's probably more accurate. Popplers are baby Omicronians after all.
""Its surface seems to consist mainly of deserts"" More on the lines of lizard type maybe.
Deep fried balls of shredded gator is the most Florida meal ever devised by man
Fun fact: much like toilet water and gravity, the meaning of shrimp vs prawn is the other way around in Australia. Shrimp being freshwater and not used for much besides fish bait, and prawns being saltwater and commonly consumed for Christmas lunch when it’s stinking hot.
Same in the UK
They should be used for catfish bait. I would rather have a bucket of catfish than a plate of bait.😂
Truly a godless country forsaken by man.
It seems to me that prawns are used to refer to big shrimps in the US, but not specifically fresh water ones. Like the common Prawn, the first species called that way lives in the Atlantic Ocean, and so are the common shrimps XD
And in my country, we use equivalent terms (in french it's crevette for shhrimp and gambas for prawns. Gambas is spanish because why not XD), and Gambas is only for the bigger ones ^^
@@anthonymcnatt3799 Or just have a plate of both and make it a fish fry 😋(as we call it in the south here in the U.S.).
It does indeed look tastier than an unguarded penguin's nest
wow the writing is insane, I just realized the eating unguarded eggs was baked right into the joke
@@smashestrains You ate most of them!
Undaunda:”You’ve been eating our babies!”
This is the Babish content I miss! Not that the newer content and hosts aren't great, but this definitely felt like a classic episode.
"Great" is ok, but "amazing" would be great.
That's a bender quote just to be clear
Agreed! There's something about the classic formula that just draws me in more - nothing against other hosts and shows, but I just can't seem to binge them like a classic babish episode.
@@Menirzyou could say you prefer binging with Babish
I feel he does less... research. Only recently. Honey mustard is not just honey and mustard, which is heavily implied. That is kind of a basic.
I always imagined Popplers as a shrimp/ popcorn chicken/ fried cauliflower mix texture and flavor with a slightly crunchy fried coating.
I feel like you'd want to process the shrimp too and turn them into dumpling filling. You can add other stuff to it too and make the shrimp paste more flavorful.
Yeah! Like some roasted garlic and peppers!
I've had that very dish in a Chinese restaurant. Absolutely delicious, especially with a sweet chili sauce.
Since popplers are alien meat, I think that the paste could include some other type of meat in smaller quantities.
Yeah, Babish got lazy with this one.
I think the idea of this was to stay true to the lore where they are literally eating children. So the idea of an encrusted shrimp is not completely... Alien.
Futurama is just one of those shows that never failed to impress, truly Groenings greatest creation
I'll always watch reruns of Futurama. I can't say the same of The Simpsons or Disenchantment.
I feel like after they came back post-cancellation, it got real inconsistent, even though some of my favorite episodes are from that period. Before that, I agree 100%
@@jameslarimer9211first four seasons were pure perfection
I always refer to popcorn shrimp as Popplers
what they're made of is a mystery. Where they come from no-one knows.@@leociresi4292
I genuinely appreciate how this episode also functioned as an example toward the different types of frying and breading. Gonna have to save this next time I'm experimenting in the kitchen!
Just whipped off a batch and let me just say… *ahem* DAWWWWWWMN! THESE ARE FIRE! ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! Next time a double batch because they didn’t hardly last to even get remotely cool! As soon as the family had a taste they were raiding the pile as I was making them! These just became a REGULAR in the repertoire! Well done Mr Babish! You nailed it again!
Which breading did you use?
Fun Fact: The sound of the Hypnotoad is a recording of a turbine engine played backwards.
SILENCE THE FALSE ONE! ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!
😵💫👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Wouldn't it sound the same forwards and backwards?
So how did those slices of bread you needed for the poppler recipe turn out?
I see...to shreds, you say.
And what about the popplers themselves?
I see...to shreds, you say.
Could you please do your own take on the Fiesta Burrito with Chili and Eggs that Dan Aykroyd makes for Robert Stack in the food truck scene from Caddyshack 2?
I was thinking ground pork rinds as the breading, or something similar.
Also, I don't think popplers are eggs, but the alien baby just curled up as it matures in it's little crater of fellow popplers.
Yes like a tadpole
@@WilliamWhitehead11Ya know a tadpole is the baby form of a frog, right?
@@futuramabender2078 As Phineas and Ferb once said... Yes, yes we do.
We have this in the UK, it's called Scampi. :)
I wasn't expecting to learn what six different kinds of fry batter are made of today, but such is life. :)
It’s a great thing that I chose to discard any pretence of losing weight in the new year. Because I’m going to be struggling to maintain my weight because I can’t stop watching baking and cooking videos, trying to replicate it and eating all the mistakes.
@@user-ch3co1rv3eAm I sensin deja vu here? I swear Babish made a Popplers video already, did he not?
@@futuramabender2078 He made at least one other recipe from Futurama, can’t remember what though.

For Chinese New Year to celebrate the Year of the Dragon on February 10th, please make Dumpling Soup that appeared in Wish Dragon movie
Yeah!! I wanted to see that made
Yes

If there was ever one cartoon food that made my mouth water without ever knowing what it would ever taste like, Popplers is it! Thank you for recreating this!
I always thought these were a hilarious commentary on the popcorn chicken craze of the early-00s, but your recipe here is making me realise this isn't too dissimilar from scampi! It's shrimp instead of, uh, squid? But being seafood cut into tiny battered balls and then fried, to be eaten along with alcohol, is a pretty similar idea.
"Luckily I think we're MANY years away from me making sentient Popcorn Shrimp."
Nearly 3 years later:
"Where this week, we're taking a look at the Popplers."
Not that long apparently.😂
Yeah I was so disappointed in this one it's not up to his usual standards as he didn't genetically engineer popplers to be as accurate as possible lol
@@TheGreatDrake *sigh* I'm on it, if I don't message back, I created a giant crustacean abomination in an attempt to mix shrimp, prawn, breading and deep fry oil, and it has punished me for the sin of its creation.
@@oldmansamsay1023 Your sacrifice shall be briefly honored and then forgotten about.
Finally! I always get so hungry after watching this episode of Futurama!!
I would not recommend a single episode of Bob’s Burgers then. Always makes me hungry 😂
@@carterthevenow3029Yessss, I love that there's an actual cookbook full of recipes based on his Burgers of the Day
Don't recommend watching the episode Fun On a Bun, then.
'*Do you want some human with your salt?!*'
I’m not into shrimp so popplers always remind me of popcorn chicken, and that episode makes me want some so badly
As they'd be land-dwelling, it makes more sense for them to be chicken-like.
@@zchris87v80 I don't think that logic necessarily follows, since cows and pigs are also land dwelling. But my more broad point is that there are a lot of different land-dwelling meats.
@@WanderTheNomadNot only that, the Omicronians are toadlike - frog legs are often compared to chicken, so I think it would be closer to a ground shrimp and chicken dumpling or a cod and chicken dumpling.
i can't believe how much these really look like popplers 👁 I always wanted to try these so much as a kid!!!! One of your best episodes recently, wowza!~!
This year is gonna be amazing! Love this channel!😊😊😊😊
Been here since round-abouts you started this channel, and come back to check in every now and then. It makes me ridiculously happy every time I do when I see how happy you seem to be doing all this. I'm glad your life seems to be going so well, Babish. Only love and well wishes for you and yours, and happy new year!
Haven’t watched one of your videos in a couple years (sorry) but stopped to watch this one and it reminded how much I miss the relaxing awesome nature of your videos. Thank you!
Babish making another of my 12 year old self's cravings be brought into real life, He truly is the GOAT cant wait to make these
❤ I love Futurama. Enjoying your channel for the last 2 years. This video really made me happy to see!
First and foremost, thank you SO much for the dipping sauce version of the Panda Express honey walnut sauce. This is going to be great to make on all other shrimp food! ❤
Got your cookbook this Christmas. Best gift I’ve ever gotten
The fact that so much time was spent focusing on just the breading and batter to perfect it is why I love this channel
Futurama is my favorite show of all time! I'm sick with covid and these 8mins made my day. Thank you Babish :)
Awe! Get well soon, buddy! How ya feelin taday? Gimme an update on yer recovery process.
Love your videos Babish!
I always thought of Popplers as being tempura'd so I'm glad to see you also trued that route!
Love the old style classic videos!
Great stuff as usual.
They looked really tasty, would have loved to tried those! I wonder if you could have made a breading with potato chips.
You should make that weird black rectangle that Pete eats in Steamboat Willie, to celebrate the fact it went into the public domain. You could also make the giant peeled potato Mickey does in that short.
That black rectangle Pete was chewing on was a just a block of chewing tobacco
You mean chewing tobacco?
I just want to thank you for going for this venture.
You have entertained and taught me and many others.
We appreciate you, man! ❤
Really well done. Bravo.
That episode always makes me crave popcorn chicken😂
I never had thought about actually making popplers but I'm so happy you did it. These look delicious.
This was a really awesome vid Babish! I feel like I learned so much about deep frying so quickly!
I've literally been watching Futurama since it came out when I was in middle school. Every time it was canceled and brought back and I'm glad to see this recipe!
There is something comforting about starting the new year with an old school babish video
Treasure Chest filled with different desserts (along with bread) from season 2 episode 8 of Marvel What If
Filing this one away for later use/harvesting of recipes. Nice!
Been looking forward to this for 5+ years, thanks.
Justice Fruit Pies from Dexter's Laboratory
This makes me real curious to see what your take on Jmmy Neutron's candy from the "Krunch Time" episode would be. Ever since I was a kid I wondered what all ten of those flavors brought together could be like.
Def trying this recipe out, looks great!
I was wondering if popplers would ever hit your radar, glad to see it was worth the wait!
Looks fantastic, thanks.
On Valentine's Day that'll be February 18th, you should make Homer Simpson's Breakfast from I Love Lisa episode
Uh Valentine's Day is on February 14th, not the 18th.
Fun fact they almost called Popplers “Tasticles”
Amazing culinary synthesis. I might have to actually make these myself lol; such a well-executed tv food -> real recipe.
You got the look absolutely perfect. I bet they taste even better.
This is the one we been waiting for Babish, since the Bachelor Chow you did sometime back.
Has he done anythin from The 30% Iron Chef episode yet? If not I want him to! I wanna see what he comes up with for Amy's pony dish. Ya know when Bender said "Amy, you're cute! So, I baked you a pony!" 😆

Very jazzy times
Idk I think we should still call them Tasticles.
I’m constantly reminded of popplers whenever I eat fried shrimp.
Delicious every time
These all were great recipes. The best coating my wife ever put on fried fish was made from kettle corn run through a food processor.
How tf did it take you this long to get to Popplers?
How about puffed rice in the batter? That'd add some 'alien' looks and texture
That or tapioca pearls would be great, since tapioca starch is what's used to make shrimp chips

Slurms McKenzie would probably love these!
I'm sure happy I decided to cut down on deep fried food just in time to see this. Temptation? Nope, not me!
im trying this for sureeee
The Omicronion's vaguely reptile appearance combined with the description of the flavor of the popplers in the episode always led me to believe it was more like a combination of popcorn shrimp and fried alligator bites.
Babish what a cop out! I want your honey mustard recipe!
I was hoping the honey walnut would win out!! I’m definitely trying these
Fully deep fried meals are my favorite!
