Loved this movie, was part of my adolescence when I was moving my first steps as an outsider boy wearing hats and loving vintage clothing. It also built my artistic imagery and it gave me good times when I had nothing but imagination. I loved this interpretation of the original material in the style of Sin City.
I can't remember who said it, but I once heard it said that the best live action version of The Spirit is actually Miller's Crossing. It's such an out-of-left-field take, but stylistically it's totally correct.
Eisner's comic was an over the top homage to film noir that was drenched in the tropes of it's time. Translating it into a modern film was basically negating any qualities that made it work as a piece of art. You'd think Miller would've known that.
