  • During the 16-bit generation developers started to use a variety of techniques to create in-game graphics, one of them being hand-drawn animation. In this episode the development process behind Aladdin for the Mega-Drive, Earthworm Jim and The Lion King and how they were able to leverage the craftsmanship of traditionally trained animators.

This, it's a travesty that a channel like this, with all the research/careful editing and care that goes into the videos has 1/10th the subscribers of some man-child recording themselves overreacting to video-games or somebody "unboxing" electronics etc. Still, I'm glad channels like this with people putting obvious effort/love into their content exist amongst the sea of "me too" TH-camrs regurgitating the same gaming/general news drama etc.

lots of people never heard of that game 1) it was out in 16-bit consoles sunset, and 2) The name Maui Mallard doesn't associate with anything people normally know from Disney characters. If they would of called it "Donald Duck starring in Maui Mallard adventures" - this would of brought far more attention in gamers circles.

Excellent and informative video, I loved Aladdin on Genesis as a child! I didn't know what made it stand out or anything about the design process as a kid but did know that it was different. The choice of using Cel shading was definitely what did it and of course the excellent audio of the Genesis was the cherry on top. In an age where 99.9% of games ship broken with the promise of "we'll fix it later (IF it sold enough AND there's still an active player base)" it's nice to look back and at games that knocked it out of the park and still conjure warm memories decades later.

Hand Drawn Animation in 16-bit games has always been fascinating to me. Among my earliest memories of it was from Mickey Mania and The Lion King on the SNES as well as Maui Mallard (aka Cold Shadow) on the PC. Earthworm Jim remains a highlight for me with its cartoony animation along with the mix of action and weirdness.

I only had a SNES so I was only familiar with Capcom's version of Aladdin (which was alright), but boy did Virgin knock it out of the park on the Genesis. Given how I don't remember anyone speaking highly of the Jurassic Park game I guess it was a good idea in hindsight to give Aladdin to Virgin.
To this day I wish they could have gotten back together (or a similar 2D game dev with animation chops) to make another Aladdin game but base it heavily on the Disney Afternoon series which introduced all sorts of colorful new villains, Mozenrath naturally being the main boss like Jafar before. Only this time you can have the choice to play either Aladdin OR Jasmine as she's totally one of the most badass Disney Princesses who can fight as well given the need. Give her some unique abilities too which Aladdin doesn't, sort of like Peach in Super Mario 2.
