I suffer from CHS and after about 5-8 months of continuous use of mostly edibles and concentrate I usually can expect an episode. There are certain things that I notice before an episode happens (like a warning or triggers)
    1. Early morning nausea (waking up)
    2. Random hungry/empty/nausea feeling (anytime)
    3. Can only eat what sounds good, when it sounds good. Horrible appatite
    4. Heartburn and acid (resort to tums and acid blockers, sometimes even too eat)
    5. Staying up really late like wee hours and going to bed fried/baked for months on end (trigger)
    6. Using thc to combat your stress or being super stressed all the time leads to depression (trigger)
    7. Eating out all the time having a dirty horrible diet and not consuming enough water. (Trigger) Staying hydrated may be the difference in severity of attack.
    8. Drinking copious amounts of alcohol or even getting drunk (trigger) p.s the hangover feels like CHS can last for days.
    9. Don't get sucked into letting thc control when and how you visit with family and friends this leads to depression Wich is a (trigger)
    10. Wake and bake is one of the worst things to do to your brain. (Trigger) But unfortunately people who already have the morning nausea usually do smoke to be able to eat or use the bathroom.
    POINTS TO TAKE AWAY!!!!!!!!
MODERATION is key, everyone is different and you need to find what and how much works or doesn't work for you. IE. Bud, Wax, Edibles or cessation.
DIET eat cleaner food and stay away from fast/takeout. Or eat out Smart.
Keep yourself hydrated all the time and don't be afraid of water.
EXERCISE don't be a couch potato and just dab out all day. Go for a swim a walk, go fishing or hunting or hiking just being in the sun and working up a sweat helps with appatite and toxin removal.
FELLOWSHIP don't be a loner go see people. You aren't alone your friends and family love you and miss seeing you. Just because you might not be able to smoke when you want or where you want doesn't make it right or healthy to just sit home and let your relationships take a dive because you can't get high all day.

Ur comment has to be one of the most Honest replies yet . How are you doing ? Have you stopped smoking ? I’m stopping today I can’t go on feeling like this anymore . I suffer from depression but a lot of what you said is simple and can easily cure depression without the. I think a lot of the times it’s in our heads

    • @alecrivera7746
      @alecrivera7746 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@mysterydpt4663 Absolutely alot of it is the fact we put ourselves into an absolutely shitty routine while trying to deal with all the crap and stress life throws at us. We cant rely on THC to combat the stress and depression. At that point we're giving our body and mind a reward for completely shitting on us.
Today makes 17 days since my last attack/episode finished, and 31 days sober. And honestly I've felt good, my eating habits and appatite are still suffering Wich is normal but they are improving. But a recent development is a severe headache I woke up with 5 days ago and will not retreat.
I am not smoking and I don't know if I will again yet . I've been using myself as a control group type study through my last 2 episodes and that's how I came up with all of those bullets in my original post. I've literally sat and wrote this stuff down during episodes because all you have time to do is puke/feel like death and think about everything you've ever fucked up in your life. This shit is a humbling experience.
Alot of people who smoke suffer from anxiety and depression already and want to just sit home all the time and medicate. But they don't realize how good it is for their mental state and even immune system to be around people whom love them, and whom they love. Go out see people, take the vacation, take the time off. People don't understand how unhealthy sitting inside the same 4 Walls staring at a screen is.
People don't realize that the staying up all night "mostly alone" dabbing away and going to bed baked then waking up and just getting baked again is actually doing to them. All your endocannabinoid receptors are being fried like Nagasaki every waking moment. They don't know anything else but being suppressed by THC.
Alot of the symptoms of CHS can be prevented or lessened just by consuming extra water during smoking sessions and all day really. This 100% helped me. As soon as I started really realizing I was getting sick again I started drinking lots of water and juice and soup before the vomiting assaulted my body. Compared to the last 2 episodes where I vomited for 11 days then 16 days this attack was 5 days of vomiting. And the entire duration was shorter and wayyyyy less intense. So I do believe the increased water consumption was partially to blame.
Unfortunately alot of stoners eat like absolute garbage dumping toxin after toxin into their already DEPRESSED, DEHYDRATED, NUTRIENT STARVED, OVERWORKED and THC SUPPRESSED bodies.
We are all diffrent and some may never be able to smoke again. My advice would be suffer through for 40 to 60 days get clean. IF YOU DECIDE!! to pick it up again start with just low THC flower ABSOLUTELY NO CONCENTRATE!!!
Keep use to just occasions like weekends or holidays or events. Treat it like a reward. Don't stay up all night smoking or go to bed stoned. Dont smoke cause your stressed or depressed. Drink something before and after your smoke session and don't eat like shit. Home cook or try to get something healthy. Fuck the fast food they are killing us slowly.
I'm sorry for the essay and like I said we're all different and exactly what I said to try I will be trying myself. At the 40 day mark. My goal in all this is to try and help where I can. I know I can survive and suffer through the attacks and if me suffering helps others to understand getting into a better routine and what can trigger episodes so be it.

@@alecrivera7746 it really is a humbling experience fortunately I think I am still in the first stage as I haven’t had the severe constant vomiting but the Abdominal pain is there and it’s bad. All the foods I loved before I can’t eat any of it at all anymore . I have to eat bland food or what I’ve been eating for the past days just rice grilled chicken and black beans but my stomache still hurts from time to time . I was taking a puff or dab thinking it will help the nauseous pain and at first it does help but the pain only comes back minutes later and stronger at that .
I think it’s great that you are sharing your experience and jotting down all the bullet keys and notes . From what I’ve read this is fairly new and not even doctors have a grip on what it really is . I myself went to urgent care and I was honest to them that I have been smoking every day since I was a teen I am 25 now and they just suggested that I take it easy on the smoking . Not once did they mention Chs but I feel as if it’s just not as recognized as it should be . What you are doing is great there are many people out there that need assurance as to what is going on with them and sometimes the answer is not that simple . It’s also strange because not everyone who is a long term daily smoker like you and myself are completely fine. Most of the people I know that smoke don’t even know this exists and they’re puffing everyday nothing to it . I can’t keep feeling like this I feel as if it’s just getting in the way of everything . I’d honestly rather be healthy and feel somewhat stressed/depressed and get over it naturally than to be smoking for the stress to temporarily go away Only for the pain to come back 10x stronger .
And of course I haven’t gone back to Urgent yet might want to visit another center to see what they can evaluate but for now I’m going to refrain from smoking and see if I see any changes . They say it doesn’t just happen it takes time and I know I’m going to have the urge to smoke during that time of healing but I must understand that my stomache is healing and I cannot interfere with that if I want to be healthy again .
Today was the first time I found out about Chs but as soon as I found out about it it gave me a little hope as too what might be wrong . Of course I’m not diagnosed yet but if stopping smoking is going to do the job then by all means i will do what ever it takes .
I also look at it as a chance of being released . I was blowing threw 50$ eights every 3 days and I wasn’t even getting that high anymore . I was literally just wasting my money . Now if I stop I can have the peace of mind knowing I will soon get better and my wallet will love me a lot more being that I’ll be able to save all the money I was spending on 50$ eights . It also gives me the peace of mind that I’ll have to pickup another hobby or atleast something productive to take my mind off of smoking and what I’ve been accustomed to the last 10 years .
Thank you again for sharing your story and your progress . It’s not a known widespread disease or whatever it is but atleast we have the peace of mind that we are not alone in this . There too are other people going through the exact same thing we are going through

Don’t give up and don’t give in. Let people be there for you even if it means they find out you smoke/smoked.
You will beg for it to be over and it will be it doesn’t last forever. But it will leave lasting damage the thought of what could possibly happen if you go down the same path again. You can smoke eventually but in moderation the stoner lifestyle doesn’t fit us that have CHS anymore.

Was just diagnosed with this today. It's been masked by my acid reflux for about 3 years. I've smoked about 3 times a day, every day, for the last 8 years. It was such a relief when the doctor told me what the problem was. Being in and out of ERs, just to have them tell me it's acid reflux. I kept telling them I've had reflux since I was 13, I know my body and this pain ain't reflux. Thank you so much for this video, and the information, and for not stigmatizing cannabis users

This is very helpful, my Bf and I (18 years old- 20 years old) smoked weed nearly everyday for about 2 years (took a two month break once). Recently he started getting sick, not being able to keep anything down, stomach pain, and a lot of weight loss. Each time he got better we would start smoking again for fun and sure enough, a week goes on and he’s back to being sick, but it wouldn’t be triggered by smoking, but by eating a lot because the daily smoking caused his stomach acid to raise and he threw up so much that he had a damaged esophagus. It’s the new year and we stopped smoking and now he seems to be detoxing from it and gets sick. Hot showers and an IV in his arm were the only way to make him feel better. I on the other hand wouldn’t get sick. I denied that it was the weed because I was fine and the last time we stopped smoking he didn’t get sick, but I’m sure it’s this. It seems hard to let go of something that made me relax at the end of the night, but if it’s what it takes to make him feel healthier, then I’ll do it. It won’t be easy, but if others can do it, then we can do it, including you (the reader).

Great topic, and well covered! Thank you for providing CME credit, too! Honestly, I'm not surprised at all that the same plant can both suppress and induce vomiting. It seems quite common for substances to have a therapeutic effect up to a certain dosage, and then cause the opposite effect by some other mechanism with either high dosage or prolonged use. Too bad that the drug war has left us behind in valuable research!

I suffered from CHS twice now... I had extreme abdominal pain and nausea.. stopped consuming THC for about a year and a half and all symptoms were gone throughout that time.. As soon as I felt better I thought it would be a great idea to smoke again.. After 2 years of smoking again Symptoms started back up and man it was the worst pain ever.. it went on for about 3 weeks and After visits to the ER and everything checked out normal I figured it was the THC again so I had to stop again.. Man I don't wish this upon anyone.. I lost about 18 pounds by not eating in that time due to abdominal pain and nausea. So if you're suffering the same symptoms and not sure what it is and you consume THC more than likely you have CHS. It took about 2 weeks after quitting for everything to go back to normal.

I have shared this video with all of my doctors who have helped me through this and one important thing: The early on symptoms are loss of appetite in the morning. If I had known that my slight loss of appetite might lead to a hyperemetic episode then I would have stopped. Please do another episode on this syndrome because there are SO many people in Boulder, CO that are in denial and ER's and Primary Care's are being flooded with CHS patients. Great video, very clear and informative. I was able to identify my CHS in the prodrome period and have quit cannabis completely and all symptoms have gone away. Thanks to the internet and videos like this one I was able to figure this out when otherwise it may have taken years to figure out and may have progressed to those further stages. Also was relieved that it was not some more serious condition as I had feared.

I used more cannabis to try and help it, it never really helped. It does sometimes take the sick feeling away in the middle of the night. Most nights I’m standing in the toilet trying hard not to be sick at 4 or 5am.. it’s destroyed my life, I feel weak and unwell in the day then and run down. I have to stop now, just struggling

I believe CHS is the body’s reaction to toxicity from too much THC built up in the system over time. With cannibis use, dosage is key. The only way to avoid CHS from occurring is to limit usage and take frequent and long breaks to allow the body to purge all of the THC so there’s no build up.

I just had my second bout with the most terrible vomiting imaginable, and am pretty sure that is what it was. I have been a heavy user since the 70s, and never had the problem before. I live in Colorado and was doing a lot of very high potency edibles. After the first ordeal in November I quit for 28 days and seemed be back to normal. So, I thought "maybe it was the pizza." But, after this, I know I can never safely use pot again. It was soooo god awful I thought I was dying. I have never screamed before while vomiting, and had to crawl to get to the bathroom I was so weak. I could not even hold down just a couple sips of water. I never had the problem before I started getting heavily into edibles, but I am not willing to take the chance on smoking it. It was so terrible that I now have an aversion to even thinking about it or when I smell it coming from my neighbors balcony. I depended on this stuff for over 50 years, and now I want to learn to deal with my feelings without turning to any kind of substance abuse.

    • @starjumper
      @starjumper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The screaming while vomiting part is spot on. I genuinely thought I was gonna go insane. I’ve been smoking daily for almost a year so I guess it caught up to me pretty fast. Only been two days since i’ve stopped (thought it was just gastritis till the 3rd er visit when they told me it was probably this) but i’m already starting to feel a bit better. I’ll miss weed but I won’t miss the agony I felt. During the worst moments it made me feel as though I was on the verge of death and I even contemplated just ending it to stop the pain (of course those were irrational thoughts). It triggered my anxiety horribly as well. It’s no joke and I’m glad you were able to pull through.

Good show ZDogg! Its interesting how everyone has a different response and this talk also highlights that indulging too much in anything can go from a positive benefit to a negative benefit. I indulged a little bit to much with drinking on my 40th bday and woke up to vomiting multiple times throughout the next day which is not usual for me. I could not keep anything down and was feeling really rough so smoking pot was the last thing I wanted. I dont smoke everyday or even every week and when I do I only indulge with a few hits. After a friend recommended to take a hit to help out...I decided to give it a shot. One hit and my nausea/vomiting stopped. Honestly, it kinda blow my mind that it would work right away! I only took that one hit so who knows if taking more would have had a more negative effect?

Amazing video. Very accurate. One caveat, taken out of context this video, plus many sources online that come up when you Google "Cannabis hyperemesis" indicate that this is a rare disorder that only occurs in extremely heavy cannabis users. The reality is this is just simple cannabis withdrawal that happens to most any long term user when they try to quit. It's not rare in the least. Smoke cannabis for 5 years or so and try to quit you should expect this experience.

    • @TheAWOLWarrior

One point you might want to add. It can be extremely hard for many people to stop smoking weed when experiencing CHS because smoking weed gives temporary relief of symptoms. So they smoke to feel better temporarily, but they are just making the problem worse and extending their symptoms. This seems to be very common in people with CHS (They hurt so bad they feel that they must smoke for short term relief).

Got sicker and sicker until I couldn't function. Pain was BAD and vomiting every 10 min. Violent episodes. And would always happen around the same time everyday. Usually 2 "sessions" a day. Had to go the ER because I felt like I was gonna pass out and felt my heart was jumping of my chest. Felt pain right below ribs. 1st visit doctors did not have a clue (nurses did though, hmmm). Gave me anti nausea and morphine, felt better. Next day felt fine and smoked. Day after went to the ER and was diagnosed with this. Never fucking smoking again. Felt like shooting myself in da face

At around 8:00 or 9:00 he states that some individuals might or might not trigger CHS at all regardless of their use, then he states they dont even know which cannabinoids are causing the problem.
In other words we dont know whats causing it only that its an actual thing seemingly caused by cannabis and obviously related to the endocannabinoid system.

I was wrongfully diagnosed with this a years or so ago. I wentto a gastroenterologist when I lost 100 pounds without trying. I had no appetite, I was full extremely fast, and I had a bit of vomiting if i forced myself to eat. I never got realeif from showering, I have highly active ms so I feel even worse in the shower and it an even provoke vomiting. But I smoked a lot of weed for a long time, the doctor couldn't see passed that. I ended up getting properly diagnosed and treated for gastroparesis and gastritis by my family doctor. Now I am doing better, I can eat a bit more and have much less nausea.

I am very addicted to cannabis.
I am very familiar with CHS.
My episodes last 3 to seven days. I almost die every time.
After 10 months of abstinence, I started smoking. Wasn't long before I'm daily smoking again. I've been smoking for about 5 months everyday and I've been getting mild warning signs for about 6 weeks. It started with a pounding heart and breath shortness immediately after smoking. For the last 10 days or so, I have noticed I'm having acid reflux if I eat at night. In the last week I've noticed a very mild icy hot sensation in my stomach (a whisper of the massively painful version i get while in an episode full swing). I have also recently been burpy. I am never burpy. But I am now... during the day too, but mostly at night. And its a very specific taste. I recognize it from my episodes.

I've been struggling with figuring out CHS for the past few months, had symptoms so severe I missed work, spent hours and occasionally days on the bathroom floor from the pain, and ended up in the ER after I lost weight to the point where I was considered underweight. I completely stopped smoking for 3 months, and after a week I was symptom free and working on gaining weight back. A few weeks ago I decided to experiment, and gradually started increasing the amount I was smoking until symptoms returned. It could be entirely coincidental, but my symptoms came back as soon as I was smoking slightly over a gram of concentrate in 2-3 days. That's roughly where my tolerance was when I first began having GI pain and nausea. Applying the capsaicin cream (OTC) to the stomach, symptoms were manageable at worst, completely gone at best.
I didn't expect this comment to turn into this long of a novel, but TLDR, if you're suffering from CHS, try capsaicin applied to the stomach to help with your symptoms and completely stop consuming all forms of marijuana (CBD included). I do NOT have a degree in medicine or science, I dropped out of nursing school in my 2nd year, this is simply what worked for me and I hope to pass it on in case it may help someone out there.
Edit: I did forget to mention, my blood work and urine analysis all came back clear, save that I am anemic which we already knew, and a considerable amount of THC in my system as well.
