    Once again, I'm so glad I found this channel. You, sir, are a wealth of information. I haven't shot a traditional bow of any flavor in over 20 years. But, I've been wanting to do it again. Now, I feel like I was just re-educated. (I was a certified bowhunter education instructor for the PA Game Commission for a few years and this channel so far has had better "curriculum" than we had. LOL) Well, I haven't made up my mind yet on a bow. But, I haven't been as excited to shoot since I was a teenager. Thank you.

    I just shot my Ramer that I got from Steve Turay yesterday and can attest to how smooth, quiet and forgiving it is to shoot. The combination of the reverse handle and string follow does wonders to move the end of the power stroke of the limbs behind your hand, making it very stable. It also resists torque for those times that I over expand and cast my bow arm out too far to the side which would be a more critical error with a standard handle longbow or recurve. It's also surprisingly quick and powerful and is more swift than some reflex-reflex longbows I've shot. It certainly drives my arrows deep into the bale. It's a work of excellence in both performance and aesthetics and I had five compound shooters remark how impressive it is. Mr. Turay is also a gentleman, knowledgeable on the craft and sport of traditional archery and a pleasure to do business with.

    Brilliant video, sir. You are absolutely correct about the mistake that shooters make regarding the way they should grip the Hill-style longbow. I have seen some grip it the way they grip their recurves and then complain about the supposed handshock aftrwards. I always tell them, "you should grip it correctly. You don't drive a sports car the way you drive a pick-up truck. They are designed and built differently. There is a proper way to grip and shoot a Hill-style bow." Some try to correct themselves, but more just scoff at me and declare, "They are all the same. They are all bows. No need to be fussy on how to handle them. They just have an OUTDATED and INFERIOR design, etc." Sigh... people sometimes.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol. Yep some people can be pretty stubborn! I have seen the same when people shoot my bow. I yell them how to grip it and they say "I dont shoot that way". Then they shoot it a couple times thier way and hand it back to me with a fake "that's really nice". I just laugh. But the ones that listen and grab it like they mean it thier eyes light up!

    Excellent tutorial Jason. I too am a big fan of this style bow. Just such a simple design with narrow limbs and thick cores - I love it. Some folks might be scared off because of the length (my ASL is 66 inches) but it is amazing how well they carry in the woods. And when you take what I call a hunting posture (bow canted), I find more than enough clearance from objects around me - even down on a knee or sitting. Yes Sir! Great hunting weapons they are! Looking forward to hearing of your adventures with your NM Classic.

      @@timsherman8701 Wow, I totally LOVE my Howard Hill THE LEGEND STICK, and am still so very happy with its amazing accuracy after 7x months.. That said, if we were to compare the configuration of your legend to mine -- here's what we would be comparing: Bow Length 70 ; RH ; Draw Weight @ Draw Length 35# @ 28 ; Straight Grip ; Laced Wrap ; Caramelized Bamboo ; Flemish Twist String. CARBON ARROWS: Along with my bow, I also purchased 12 x Carbon GOLD TIP 500 Expedition Hunter Arrows with screw-in practice field tips. SHOOTING STYLE: The "Straight Grip" should be held with the heel of the palm contacting the grip with a dropped wrist hold on the bow. Incidentally, it did take me a couple days of constant practice, on and off, before I got the hang of this style of shooting. Now, I can't imagine shooting any other way. Believe me, if i can do it, so can you!!! 😃🏹

    It does get confusing when you see AFB or ASL referred to as longbows.

    I've always known that longbows are more forgiving, which is why I shoot one. For hunting with such a long bow, do you have a lot of maneuverability problems when hunting on the ground? I don't climb up into the trees anymore to hunt. I'm sold on everything else about them.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problems at all. And I'm a short guy. I find them easier to gauge limb clearance to branches etc easier do to the one direction of the limbs rather than a recurve sweeping forward and backward and tip straightening out. The longbow is like a bent stick and limb travel is quick and easy to look at and know.

    3 questions.
    1. I find this idea of "cast" very interesting. I theoretically would think cast would come down solely to the arrow and not the design of the limb it's being fired from. You did say you're shooting heavier arrows. Heavier arrows have more mass and therefore more momentum(cast). That coupled with the drag of the arrow, like smaller fletchings, which steal less energy with the friction of them against the air maintaining momentum and not slowing down the arrow. Maybe there is something going on with the bend of the arrow storing energy from the shot and that helping it to maintain that cast in flight. I'd love to see some testing done in this regard. Do you find your arrows being berried deeper in the target? That should show if those arrows are hitting harder down range. I'm not sure I buy into the arrow hitting higher meaning there is more cast though as that arrow coupled with that bow's design could be giving those arrows a different angle of attack leaving the bow causing a larger arc to the shot giving higher hits at that distance.
    2. When you showed how close that arrow is to your finger... Do you have any issue with broad head coming dangerously close to your finger or are your arrows longer to prevent that issue?
    3. I guess I take issue with you saying that these bows are the ultimate hunting weapon. Let's not even get into firearms. I mean... aren't compound bows superior to these types of bows in almost every way? I myself, shoot a reflex deflex longbow, and love the challenge involved and the time invested in getting accurate with it. I, however, am not under the misconception that my bow isn't inferior to a modern compound in almost every aspect except maybe weight, dimensions, noise(possibly), cost(value), and complexity. I think with accuracy/distance, speed, impact(punch, cast), consistency, etc. a modern compound wins every time. Wouldn't you agree? or... Are you coming from the angle of excitement and thrill? I could completely understand if you're saying you have to get closer and such giving more tension to the moment and providing a greater excitement for your hunt. I'd agree with that.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent questions! I love your detailed explanation! Ok here we go. 1. There are alot of factors that relate to cast as you mentioned. I have a reflex deflex baraga bow from same Bowyer and it's the same weight. It is however a 60" vs my straight limb being 64". 2 things I do know when I shoot those 2 bows side by side. The arrows hit higher and are harder to pull out of the 3d target. There are several factors that play to this like limb dynamics and linear travel of the limbs. But honestly I think the 2 biggest factors is the limb tapers and how the Bowyer builds the bow so that your limbs get the most out of them at your draw length. 2. The straight limb bow always has a smoother release due to limb travel in only one direction there for the arrow recovers faster not wasting energy. I'm gonna answer rest in next post to keep this from being to long.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I leave my arrows 1.5 inches longer than my draw so that my broadhead never gets too close to my hand. I was never comfortable with the broad head touching my finger so I leave the 1.5 longer to avoid that.
      As for me saying it's the ultimate hunting weapon. I mean it 2 ways. One longbows are so strong, durable and simple chances of something going wrong breaking, getting bumped out of alignment or mechanically failing or a screw loosening are so slim.
      2. Most importantly. No other weapon will make you a better hunter than a tradbow. The limitations make it harder but teach you so much more woodsmanship and hunting skills. No other weapon will make you learn so much about the animals you hunt and how to hunt them.
      There is no doubt modern weapons are more efficient and kill more animals. But hunting is about so much more than killing animals. The benefits of a simple durable longbow and what it forces me to learn make it the ultimate unfailing hunting tool.
      Again great questions! Any other ones let me know.

      I realize this is an old post, but I want to put in my $0.02 here because I'm a fan of Jason's channel and I want to add to this thoughtful conversation (and I mean that sincerely). While the compound may appear superior as a hunting weapon on paper, you have to also think of the real world application. If you're out hunting in a remote location and you drop your compound bow, are your finely tuned rest and sights still in alignment? How will you know when the moment of truth comes? When you have a simple stick and string and you put the time in to learn how to shoot it well, then at that moment of truth you can be confident that you can make the shot regardless of whether that stick was dropped on the ground or not. The compound has taken the archer out of the equation. It leaves the hunter too reliant on gadgets to get the job done. It's like training wheels on a kids bike. When the gadgets aren't tuned, what does that archer have to fall back on ? Additionally, which material freezes your hand in winter; wood or aluminum? This conversation could go on ad nauseum, but to me the idea of being reliant on accessories that can be knocked out of tune to make the bow work properly makes the compound a finicky weapon that cannot be easily considered "superior". Shooting at paper, sure. Taking it into the field to hunt, not so simple.

    The ASL definition has been corrupted over the years and is not what it was intended to be. The ASL, American Semi-Longbow, originally spoke of the profile of the bow, not the straightness of the limb. Most bows prior to them were a D cross section, deep from back to belly and narrow side to side...ala the English Longbow style. The ASL was a wider cross section, more rectangular and then thinner from back to belly. This allowed for pressures of the draw to be spread over that wider cross section and allow for bows that didn't break as easily, were smoother and faster.
    How this became a definition of only straight limbs is because the bowyers making the original ASL's didn't have the working knowledge to make them deflex/reflex, so until that time (later into the 40's and 50's) they were all straight limb by default. Once they did allow for that process, the same ASL's were able to be laminated into different profiles.
    That said, the ASL now has taken on the moniker as it applies to straight, reflexed or deflexed limbs...right or wrong, but it's good to know how it started. Pope and Young were talking about the rectangular cross sections back before 1920 but few back then used that profile as it was "too new". :) I enjoy your presentations, I've been in archery since seeing Disney's Robin Hood back in 1955. Still loving the longbow. Take care.

    I use what I call these bows a Flatbow or true ASL bow for all models except the Reflex Deflex bows. I have a Bow that is an old all fiberglass dual side arrow rest bow with a set in handle design an Actionbow by Actionrod 8200 model at 36 pounds at 28 inch draw that at my draw length I get to 30-31 inch draw from them. I got from E-bay the bow received at home on 1-2-2021. The one big flaw is the bow is that fiberglass so it is going to be slower then the other bow types and being a non recurve will be 10 Feet Per Second slower then that so being Fiberglass the weight of bow sets the Feet Per Second, so is the not best combo. The cool thing is that there are few models of Flatbow that are made with the middle style handle set unless you get an older fiberglass bow for the job unlike some recurve bows that have the handles in the slightly ergonomic style with the limbs in the middle. Oh there is at least one model of lower priced Chinese bow limb made for ILF bow risers and some other more expensive models out there that are made in the flatbow styles.

      @@SamkoTradBow No problem I have just called them all Flatbows due to what I see on some other Sites like Grayvn Archery where If I did get a traditional Flatbow in more hunting weights of 40-50 pounds going towards the 45-50 pound bow that is who I would go through due in part to price and other stuff just Possibly getting for the bow the one model with the Rattle Snake Skin backing since I live in Pierre (Pier) South Dakota and South Dakota is one of the top states for Rattle Snakes.I know I think I plan on getting the Hunger Games Bow eventually at 30-35 pounds for my mom since She read the books not watched the movies but read the books a year or two before the moives came out. I think I have recently a Fast Flight String from Grayvn Archery for my only sold on Amazon OEELEINE Airobow, the one piece 54 inch 45 pounds at 28 inch draw which for me is 33-35 pounds recurve with some 31-32 pound pulls as well. The Recurve for now is going to be my eventual hunting bow when I get better and 35 pounds is 90% what I draw for the bow and I can aim better with the bow. The recurve I got 6-2-2021 same date as the Fast Flight string and was so nice for the price at just under $200 with tax not including Fast Flight String that when I had a Bear Archery Hair rest on the bow my brother thought I had a Bear Archery bow at first until he got closer to see the bow.

    I think the definition for an ASL is lacking here in that it differentiates it from other designs used in the American traditional archery scene but it doesn't differentiate it from earlier history designs. The ASL is an evolution from earlier English designs differentiated by having broader flatter limbs and an arrow shelf.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The asl or American semi longbow was made popular by Howard Hill and he called it that because it differed from an English longbow because of the flat limb cross section rather than the d cross section. The how an asl became a bow is not what I was going after in the video. So I didn't make it a history lesson. And since a true d bow is not an asl those bows are not considered hill bows like I'm addressing in the video.

    Interesting stuff and beautiful bows, but the differentiation between FPS and "cast" sounds like black magic. The only force imparted to the arrow by the bow is velocity, period. An arrow shot at greater velocity from one bow will remain at a greater relative velocity at any given point along its trajectory (the arrows being equal). Obviously, just like with firearms, the total kinetic energy of an arrow is a function of mass and velocity, but the only variable that the bow has anything whatsoever to do with is velocity.
    I suspect that the arrows you fire from your ASL are launched at a slightly higher angle and thus hit higher, unless your ASL is actually the faster bow.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the way energy is delivered from the limbs and the string influence cast. a recurve or rd longbow has 3 different limb bend directions that work differently and also cause changes in string flight. a asl longbow has only one direction of limb travel and it is consistent. this equals less string twist, straight linear energy transfer and string travel directing all the energy from the limbs in a more efficient way to the arrow. the arrow is then able to absorb that energy in its entirety. Atleast that is how it was explained to me!

  • @dgriswold93
    @dgriswold93 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    All that hooey about cast vs speed is simply false. Arrows do not know or care what has propelled them. A properly tuned 500 grain arrow moving 180 fps out of a longbow is absolutely no different in any way shape or form to the same weight arrow moving out of a tuned recurve at 180 fps.

    • @SamkoTradBow
      @SamkoTradBow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I imagine this debate would be similar to the heavy arrow vs light arrow debate. or the penetration of a slow heavy arrow vs a light fast arrow debate. Also a 500 grain arrow at 180 would not be a good test subject for cast vs speed as that arrow would not hold enough energy to measure on a chrono. you would need about 600-800 grains to really see the difference with the imperfect release of fingers. It would be easy to verify if someone with a chrono was willing to risk it. Shoot a recurve that shoots a 700 grain arrow at 120 and a straight limb hill style longbow that shoots a 700 grain arrow at 120. Then test them both at 50 yards and see what the the speed depreciation is for each. According to howard hill, and other flight shooters "cast is a real thing"

      @dgriswold93 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Traditional Bowhunting And Wilderness Podcast thanks for the reply. Everything being equal, both 700 grain arrows moving 120 FPS would still be moving the same speed as each other at 50 yards. Now if you want to debate whether tiny imperfections in form on tuned setups are less critical on a longbow leading to better arrow flight, then you may have a case.

    • @SamkoTradBow

      I dont have a way to prove it. But from what I have always been told there would be a difference down range do to the energy usage. I can not prove or improve it as I dont have a chronograph and if I did I'm not confident shooting thru it at 50 yards. So all I can do is believe those that I'm assuming tested it in the past. But from what those flight archers said cast is a real thing.

    • @dgriswold93
      @dgriswold93 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Traditional Bowhunting And Wilderness Podcast I have heard others who proclaim to “know” and be “experts” in the sport. I have yet to hear a single argument for how an arrow is able to gain energy once it has left the bow string. And there’s a good reason for that, because it breaks the law of physics, it’s impossible. Everything, and I mean everything, being equal two 700 grains arrows moving the same speed out of a bow will decelerate at the same exact speed. It does not matter how a limb is shaped once the arrow leaves the bow.

      @SamkoTradBow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dgriswold93 you might be 100% right. But again I can not prove it for myself so I have to go by what others have said. I dont know if they are right or if you are. And until I can test it for myself I will never know. But I honestly believe howard hill and those record setting flight shooters would of done some testing. But I can not personally prove any of it.
