I went government and became a Children's Social Worker for DCFS in L.A county. I promoted to Supervisor in 2014, and I make a six-figure salary. I didn't bother getting my LCSW, because I work policy, work with the courts, train, manage. To me going the administrative route was more fulfilling and more lucrative. Great benefits, as this is not taken out of my salary, it's given to me as an added monthly allowance. My benefits cost comes out of that allowance.

@@cgrace1800 I started at CSULB getting My dual B.A in History and Women/Gender Studies with a minor in Anthropology. I assured myself knowing and understanding human behavior, policy, laws and activism. Then I worked for 3 years post undergrad in various social welfare forums (All girls group home, children's non-profit mental health clinic, adult non-profit mental health clinic, and a Foster Family Agency). Then I went off to get my Master's in Social Work again at CSULB, with some classes in Public Policy. I did my internships at CHLA, and with DCFS. I also worked with transgender people at a drop in, homeless center, and recruited foster parents for two Foster Family agencies. I did part time work for a social work job placement agency named Delta-T, where I was a Therapeutic Behavioral Specialist, A developmental specialist for children with developmental disabilities. I also was stationed at a Cal-Works booth at a DPSS office to address mental health services for women receiving welfare, and were not able to work due to having depression, or being victims of D.V. I also helped fund and open two D.V shelters. In the 1990s I was part of a task force to push the United States to pass laws against sex trafficking and assuring that women brought to the U.S and exploited were not treated as criminals. by the time I started working with DCFS, I arrived at the age of 32 with a wealth of experience and an eclectic educational background.

Very informative video, but I do find the order and salaries to be a little off. Easily the highest paying job in Social Work is private practice if you have an LCSW. Common hourly rates are $150-$200 an hour. Second highest paying is definitely Medical Social work, but choose your hospital wisely for best pay, benefits and retirement. I work at Kaiser which is easily the highest paying and I’m on my second year and made $144,000 this year. I highly suggest if you live in California and we have pensions. Good luck out there everybody.

I want to do social work in a school. Especially schools where kids are more likely to drop out. Like practical schools.
I dropped out of high school because I was constantly being told that I wouldn't get anywhere. And when I got older, I noticed that many kids hear the same.
I want to help kids like this get trough somehow.
I know it's financially not the best paying job out there. But if I can help a few kids overtime, it's worth it.

Thank you for the info! This was super helpful! However, I’ll have to respectfully disagree with the article when it mentions “speech pathology” as a career for social workers. It is a career that is highly specialized and it requires an accredited graduate level degree in speech pathology in order to practice. I looked into speech pathology as a possible career path before deciding on social work so it surprised me to see it on the list. Don’t get me wrong, speech pathology it’s a great field, just too much anatomy for my liking 😅. I mean, they have you do cadaver labs 😳… no thanks 🥴 lol. But your insights on the other jobs, especially the ones you’ve had experience with, were really helpful! Thank you for the great content!

I worked at a psych hospital for a few years. It’s hard work. But, I loved the fast pace and the constant changes.
That job taught me sooooo much and I grew so much as a social worker. The hospital I was at payed a way more because they had us wear many hats and it was a very busy job. Most days I worked 10 hours.
It was a wild time in life, but it was what I needed. The thing I struggled with the most was the families. Families were so complicated and often times I provided more therapy and referrals for families. I loved it but I knew I couldn’t do it forever.

I get anxiety when speaking in groups or just being the center of attention therefore this is one of my biggest concern.

    • @iamkierraleigh9499

      Greetings,
I wanted to assist in answering your question. I am still in graduate school, getting my master's in social work (MSW). I graduate on December 16th, so in two months, I believe I have enough experience to answer this question efficiently. Side note I have a bachelor's in psychology as well.
So in social work at the graduate level depending on the program, it will allow you to choose a concentration/specialty. The two options are direct practice which is studying social work from the micro perspective, or for my program, and it's called Community Administrative Practice ( CAP), in which you would study social work at the macro level. In direct practice, you would work directly with clients, not in a group setting, but more on one-on-one interactions focused on one individual at a time. In contrast with CAP or macro like in the name, you would be focused more on groups, Community improvement, program evaluations, and writing grants for nonprofits. That's the concentration that I chose - CAP. CAP would require more speeches in public and things like that. If you want more of an introverted position, I suggest direct practice. If you have any questions and I'm able to answer them, let me know.

Hii, thank u for sharing this vedio. I am doing my masters in social work. I am a bachelor of laws (LLB) and practicing as a lawyer in sri lanka. Can I get a job opportunity with said qualifications ? Plz reply 🌼

I would suggest looking at the Social Work jobs in your area. Look at the companies who are hiring in your area of interest. Make a list of 10-12 companies and contact them to ask if you can be hired with your qualifications. You can also look up various job descriptions to see what the qualifications are.

Yes but your options will be limited. A MSW will give you more options to work in a variety of settings like the speaker in this video. Also, a higher salary is a plus!
