      Forgive me for late response, I'm not quite sure if I'm correctly navigating the comment section. I'm not a social worker but I'm how ever fascinated and intrigued when it comes to doing the inner work, therapy etc. There is so much I would like to share with you but this may not be the ideal space and I don't want my comment to look like an essay, but thanks for the great work you are doing please continue.

      I didn't expect that some social work jobs require you to act as a guardian! It is so weird signing off on kids documents as their guardian and making all important decisions for them (state wards).

    I’ve been a social worker for 12 years as well. What shocked me the most was that I became a social worker with a plan of working in child welfare. I literally avoided classes related to geriatric, medical, or hospice care (as much as I could) because I never anticipated going into those fields. I very quickly burned out in child welfare, specifically CPS, and fell into hospice while looking for a position in a different child welfare setting. Turns out I was made for hospice social work. I absolutely love my job and feel like I make a positive difference so much more often than I ever did in child welfare. I love that social work gives you the opportunity to work in so many different fields and I encourage new social workers or social work students to take advantage of the different classes offered when obtaining your BSW because you never know where you will find your specific niche. Love your thoughts on “making a difference.” I think that’s what we all hope for and I agree that, as a social worker, you have to take the little victories and know that sometimes you make a difference and never even know it. ❤️

    • @ManickaThomas
      @ManickaThomas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Thank you for sharing this...I agree with you, it is only by exploring different areas of social worker that you can decide where you passion lies. Because we get a one-dimensional view of social work we sometimes pigeon hold ourselves when there are actually so many things we can do with our degree!

      I have a question. I’m in my late 40”s so going back to school at my age leaves me no room for wasting time. When deciding on an AAT degree I can not decide on Sociology or Social Justice. Which would be more pertinent to obtaining a bachelors in Social Work? Currently I see myself working with incarcerated women or women in domestic violence shelters but as you said, that could change.

I have an internal struggle between picking something that my intellectual side says would be the most logical thing to do, as a Healthcare Administration degree, but then my "intuitive/feeling" side of me thinks that Social Work/Psych is a better fit. I am in my late forties and I'm tired of the "rat-race" in the corporate world. I feel like I have more to do with my life than make the organizations more money. If I choose this field to study it will be because I want to make a difference in other's lives and feel like I've contributed to society in some way. Thanks again for the information!

    I’m 17 and still trying to figure out what I want to do or what to make of myself. Since I was twelve, I thought I wanted to be a writer but found it’s not ethical plus I’m not so sure it’s may passion anymore. I then decided psychology since it’s interesting and I want to help others, but then switched to business for the money- which wasn’t a wise choice. A while ago, I’ve stumbled upon social work and while going through a tough time, it gave me inspiration to help others. I’m really hoping to get my bachelors degree in social work to become a child protective socials workers. Hoping I can be a better one than the ones I’ve met when I was younger.

    Just graduated last summer with a BS in psych and am now a social worker at a rehabilitation/nursing home for the mentally ill and addicts. I’m thinking about doing this for 2 years to get some experience and eventually go back to school for a masters in clinical sociology to be a mental health therapist or counselor. I just needed a break from school in between.

    You make a great point. You have to be an Ambassador to all parties involved in social services In order for things to go smoothly. This is difficult because you have to teach parents or care takers without offending them. You also have to be able to document the process of how each situation was handled and the outcomes of the situation. It can be hard. If you are in this field I have the utmost respect for you. I also have hopes that all of you do not get discouraged by the challenges you face. You got this !

    I'm currently working as a domestic service provider after being a school drop out after high school but while here the kind of unfair treatment from a foreign country has helped me recover my life , have more focus and slowly I started being an example to many. I always make myself available for those wanting to be heard for really it makes me happy knowing that I became a change in someone's life..I have always had passion for business and helping others but I didnt know how to go about this just now i had asked a friend from my country to tell me more and the curiosity brought me here I'm so glad to experience this and cant wait to resume studies in a career that brings me joy..How I wish I can connect with someone already in the field it doesnt matter where he or she is from it would really make my moments since sharing is my thing...Thank you
