The five nominees in this category were not only first time nominees, but none of them would be nominated again. That has got to be a unique occurrence
Stone Salter wtfpod.libsyn.com/episode-916-mary-steenburgen check out this interview she did recently, she really seems like she's just the nicest person.
I saw the beginning of the dumb comedy "Step Brothers," where she's the mother of one of the two adult boys. The film shows how she and the father of the other boy met and fell passionately in love with each other... and Mary really sells the steamy scene. Watching it, I also felt mad passion for her!
Ms. Steenburgen is what you call a really versatile actress because she's never played the same role twice. You can't typecast her. What a thrill it must have been to win this award! She handled it with class and thoughtfulness.
At least he has an Oscar now. The Academy presented him an honorary award for his body of work in November. He ended his acceptance speech with the old Jack Benny line: "I don't deserve this. But I have arthritis. And I don't deserve that, either."
I agree. I thought of an animated character for her to voice in an animated movie based on a book I’m working on. It’s called “The Barnyard Hero Brigade.” The character for her to voice is an evil woman named Madam Vice. movie-ideas.fandom.com/wiki/The_Barnyard_Hero_Brigade
I was very surprised to learn that she is Arkansasian. But there's her natural accent, in all of it's breathy Southern glory. Over the decades, Mary Steenburgen has played many different women, and with many different accents. All of them have been realistic and believable. In particular, her (Emmy-winning, I believe) role as the brave, courageous, and heroic Dutch woman Miep Gies in the amazing 1985 TV movie THE ATTIC: THE HIDING OF ANNE FRANK was nothing short of spellbinding. Thank you, Mary Steenburgen, for giving us so many memorable portrayals pf strong women in your long, illustrious career.
Many years ago my husband and I were in Toronto. We were walking around, trying to find someplace to have dinner. We saw an interesting pub with a menu posted next to the door. We read the menu, considering going in. Someone behind us asked in the most distinctive voice, “does anything look good?”. We turned around and looked up, it was Donald Sutherland. We said yes and walked in.
Eileen Brennan had dinner with Goldie Hawk when Private Benjamin was made and when they crossed the street half of Eileen face was crushed by a car and had to be reconstructed….as you can see in this video the surgeons did a marvelous job. Mary Steenburgen never has anything negative to say about anyone and that is my definition of class.
Malcolm McDowell was never nominated. There is a great documentary about John Cazale that you should see. He made 5 movies and then he died. The five were The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter. (He was Fredo in The Godfather and Sal in Dog Day Afternoon) He was brilliant and everyone who worked with him said he was the best actor they knew. (And he was Meryl Streep's boyfriend when he died.)
It’s like she’s the victim of the Best Supporting Actress Curse, but not. She might not have won another Oscar , but continues to do good work forty years later. She’s also been married to Ted Danson for over 25 years.
I loved Mary Steenburgen's performance in "Philadelphia" playing one of the lawyers for the defendants. That scene where she says "I hate this case" acknowledging Andrew Beckett was right all the time. Why she wasn't nominated for supporting actress boggles my mind still today.
From the mists of memory.... I do believe Kris Kristofferson was supposed to present with Diana. He had to drop out when the show was postponed a day because of the assasination attempt on President Reagan (Kris was shooting ROLLOVER in NYC with Jane Fonda). Non-nominated Donald graciously stepped in. What a gent! As the only principle cast member not nominated for OP, he was the only actor who really could have given DeNiro competition for top award. And still has never gotten a nod.
The first time I heard her last phrase in her speech, " I feel like Tap Dancing", I actually thought she was saying " I feel like Ted Danson" .... hmmm
I'm surprised the studio remake machines didn't notice how much like Barbara Stanwick that Mary looked and acted. As a young actress in the 30s Stanwick was playing the same sort of women and by 45 she was the highest paid actress in the world. Her starring role in Cross Creek is I believe some of her best work in her earlier career. She deserved the award for this supporting role .
Now that's a woman Doc Brown could fall in love with. Her best movie was Time After Time -the year before Melvin and Howard, and, then, of course, the classic BTTF 3.
Eileen Brennan went on to recreate her role in the TV Series Private Benjamin and won an Emmy for it. She is only one of a handful of performers who have achieved the Oscar/Emmy nomination double for the same role. Others are Jose Ferrer, Cliff Robertson, Barbara Barrie.
Eileen Brennan was one of a very small group of actors who parlayed an Oscar nominated role onto the small screen. She won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for the role. Only Barbara Barrie for Breaking Away springs to mind for having done the same movie to tv transfer.
There are some actors that are in the "Wait, they've NEVER been nominated?" list John Cusack, Alan Rickman, John Turturro, John Cazale, Malcolm McDowell...
McDowell is a great actor, but "A Clockwork Orange" was MUCH too bizarre and scary to get him a nomination from the staid group of old men who at that time dealt with nominations, and "Caligula" was even worse. His performance in "Time After Time" was charming, but not really Oscar material.
Um, Cathy was fantastic in "Raging Bull", but Steenbergen is also fantastic in "Melvin And Howard" and absolutely deserved the award, this was no upset.
I never saw Melvin and Howard, but I did see Private Benjamin and RAging Bull. I thought those two actresses in those films did great jobs in those roles.
Back then in simpler times . . when the winner was always a surprise because precursor awards like Golden Globe Awards did not determine who got the Oscar
@JerseySurvivor Actually Diana was paired with Neil Diamond, who was in "The Jazz Singer" the prior year. But he decided not to attend (not sure it had anything to do with the delay of the broadcast). And Sutherland was indeed robbed of a nomination for his great work in "Ordinary People."
That is my question as well since Duvall had nothing to do with the Category as far as I know and he just gave a snarl. Did Duvall and Mary Steenburgen ever work on a film together after that? Probably not.
Nope. The nominees that year were Gene Hackman for The French Connection (he won) Peter Finch for Sunday Bloody Sunday, Walter Matthau in Kotch, George C Scott for The Hospital and Topol in Fiddler on the Roof
@deanriam I miss Cathy Moriarty because her acting appearances have been very infrequent over the past ten years. I should have said I miss her appearances terribly, lol.
::richard dreyfuss narration voice:: And it really was this moment when I was only seven, that I fell head over heels in love with Mary Steenbergen... and somehow under the alignment of the cosmos I was able to meet her in person just a few weeks later. I took the long way around the block, picked a pretty flower, and when we met, she let me place it in her hair.
"No one has ever accused me of being a fast talker!" LOL!!! That's true!!! A wonderful performance - when her character disappears halfway through the movie, it does get much worse!!!
+Richard Black You are so right. I remember being pissed at the time. And Sutherland has never been nominated once in his career. Should have also been as 'X' in JFK. Best performance in that film's huge cast. A major contribution to its twisty dramatics and pacing. And with only about ten minutes of screen time!
She was so lucky to land Malcolm McDowell and remember he kicked his first wife to curb for her, but they probably we're having problems, anyway he now as a wife that puts a fashion model to shame !
Cathy Moriarty is an awesome actress; I miss her terribly. Diana Scarwid is a BRILLIANT character actress (hers and Gary Sinise's portrayal of the Truman's in 1995's "Truman" were spectacular). I'm not familiar with LeGalienne's work, and I never quite understood the appeal with Steenburgen, (but I didn't see the film, in all fairness), though i like the outfit. Brennan is a hoot, and is very dynamic/diverse in her roles. Oh, and Donald Sutherland looks quite dashing here, also. :)
The five nominees in this category were not only first time nominees, but none of them would be nominated again. That has got to be a unique occurrence
😂😂😂😂😂 come on!!! You are stupit
That does seem unique. I'm so used to seeing most of the 5 either being past nominees or winners.
Is it me or is she simply the most beautiful and genuinely nicest person ever?
Stone Salter wtfpod.libsyn.com/episode-916-mary-steenburgen check out this interview she did recently, she really seems like she's just the nicest person.

Classy woman
maybe nicest. dunno about beautiful. shes looked 60 years old her entire life
@@kennethgriffin7921 ridiculous statement.
Mary Steenburgen is one of the best character actresses of the last 40 years. She brings beauty and class to everything she does.
What planet are you on?
I agree. Christine Lahti is another one.
She seems so self-possessed and genuine that you can tell there's a real person there who didn't hang her entire ego on something like an award.
Ms. Steenburgen is what you call a really versatile actress because she's never played the same role twice. You can't typecast her. What a thrill it must have been to win this award! She handled it with class and thoughtfulness.
Actually, she's played a woman in love with a time traveler twice.
Donald Sutherland is bitter because he's never even been nominated
At least he has an Oscar now. The Academy presented him an honorary award for his body of work in November. He ended his acceptance speech with the old Jack Benny line: "I don't deserve this. But I have arthritis. And I don't deserve that, either."

Mary Steenburgen is cool.

I like how she present herself and how beautiful she is, especially her feminine and soft-spoken soothing voice.

Malcolm McDowell was never nominated.

Interesting that Mary Steenburgen is still somewhat relevant despite never winning or be nominated since.
Yeah she has been a supporting powerhouse in film and TV despite not ever being nominated again.
It’s like she’s the victim of the Best Supporting Actress Curse, but not. She might not have won another Oscar , but continues to do good work forty years later. She’s also been married to Ted Danson for over 25 years.

She is so poised and calm and classy in her late 20s too! No theatrics, love it!!

He is just awesome in everything
May sir Donald Sutherland rest in peace.. 😔🙏🙏🙏
Cathy Moriarty is amazingly beautiful-- wow, as is Mary Steenburgen.

Debra Winger should have been nominated this year in Urban Cowboy. Glad to see Diana Scarwid and Cathy Moriarity and Eileen Brennan nominated too.

Check her out on "The Last Man On Earth"
