This in an oldie but a goodie. I have wished for a long time that they would release a 21700 version of this light. I know it would take away the CR123 option, but the extra run time would be dope.
SL just came out with the HL-6, which uses 21700's and bumps up brightness in all modes. I have the HL-4 and HL-5. I use the HL-4 as an all around emergency light, and the HL-5 specifically for searching/identifying things at midrange outside at night. For an outdoor search light, the HL-6 should be even better than the HL-5, but since it's rare that I do that I grab the HL-4 because the low 60 lumens has a longer run time than the other models, and is a better low for closer tasks like checking fuses/breakers when the lights go out. The modes don't reach as far as the 5 and 6, but is still very usable at range. The low on the HL-5 and 6 is too bright for closer tasks, as I think they were designed specifically for identifying/searching at range.
Your reviews are awesome! You cover basically every light I could care about lol, your explanation of the TIR lens is gonna make me pick up an Elzetta and perhaps now one of these HL5's, saw on the website they have an HL-6 now!?
What can I say, it's a very nice and clever light. As you showed, real nice beam and it didn't get hot. Those nice run times too for that kind of steady output. I think the price is very reasonable. Such a nice wide beam to light up all before you and yet a good focus beam.

The HL-6 is out now! Just got mine, it's about double the performance and even cooler on fit and finish.
Soo is it worth it because I was thinking of getting the protac 5
