The Resistance should’ve had a more powerful military to deal with the First Order. They didn’t have the money for a military the size of the Empire, but they should’ve in the 30 years before Episodes 7
There is explanation given to all that. For one Republic had demilitarisation which is reason why Resistance was created as way to fight First Order while First Order has backers inside Republic as well as Imperial remnants as basis.
The first order didn't instantly appear so the resistance wouldn't need to be around for the entire 30 years it would be formed ounce Leia learned of the first order

Rey being unable to meet the expectations she puts onto herself is an interesting way to develop her character, especially seeing how the Darkside is a quick pathway to power. Wonder how much they will commit to this idea in the movie.
Geez, at least the empire tried using diplomacy first before going to war. The first order though are life wiping valuable planets for no reasons other then minor suspension. Civivians pretty much have no option left but to fight or die at this point. Not helped that the first order has lost the starkiller and should have antagonized damn near the entire galaxy by now. I know they're launching a galaxy wide invasion but them possessing this much power from the start on top of the starkiller base pre ep8 is so utterly contrived idk what to say.
From what I understand the First Order had secret support in the New Republic that was able to provide them with resources that (combined with the resources allocated in the Unknown Regions (by Sidious as one of his backup plans) and the rest of the Imperial Remnant) meant that they never had to start from scratch, instead being the second most powerful organisation in the galaxy from the get go, only keeping it secret until they could start a form of blitzkrieg against the rest of the galaxy. I think it was said somewhere that even Starkiller Base had already been a kind of back-up plan by the empire that only had to be finalized by the First Order. So in my opinion it isn't that contrived.
