And if you are not familiar with his work, I would recommend listening to his songs New World in the Morning, I Don't Believe in If Anymore, Durham Town, and The Last Farewell. There’s something about Neil Diamond’s songs that have a way of making me think of Christmas, or at least the afterglow of the holiday season, ones like this and “Honey Dripping Time.” His songs also have a way of making me think of Dearborn, Michigan where my maternal grandparents had lived for many years(even Christmas in Dearborn, Michigan at Nana and Pop Thomas’.)

This song always reminds me of my Dad Mitch Elliott.
He was born in 1937, was a teenage tearaway, then he joined the Army and toured Malaya (Now Malaysia), Ireland, Cyprus and Germany.
After the army he worked as a truck driver for More & Brock and Allan Morris before joining Hambro Life Assurance and Queensway.
He worked as a taxi driver before retiring and represented his old regiment in his latter years.
He always seemed to want more from his life than life would give to him, at least when he lived with us up until 1972.
He remarried after he and my Mum divorced and had a daughter with my stepmother.
They lived in a private semi detached house a stone's throw from Grandma and Auntie Alison when they were both alive, and I'm sure he was happier there.
He passed away on the 18th October 2013 and I miss him very much.
We met for a talk in May 1988 and both of us were glad we did it, it was great.
We lost each other five years later when Alison died, something he said threw me very badly and we never spoke again.
I always remember him smiling, and sitting on his knee when I was five and pushing his hair back.
He also took me to see Le Mans in 1971, and also to the zoo to see all the animals, I'd never seen some of them.
RIP Dad, I love you and miss you.

This song, written by Joni Mitchell and sung so powerfully by Neil Diamond really describes our checkered existence in life.... as the lyrics state 'that something's lost when something's gained, living everyday.'
