On the DJI OM 5 just press 4 times the M button and you will enter on POV mode, press 4 times the M button again and you’ll switch to Follow mode (You don’t need the DJI Mimo app to do this).
But the angle limitations on the tilt and roll axis of the OM5 make it almost useless in POV mode. OM5 is more for Vlogging, never an option for mobile filmmaking. 🥲

I have om4 and smooth 5. In my humble opinion, i'd go with the om4. These are smartphone gimbals at the end of the day, which means portability and efficiency are quite important. OM4's foldability helps save space in your bag or pocket. Being able to mount the phone in 2 seconds and switch between landscape and portrait is also huge. Portrait footages became as important due to the rise of tiktok and reels. Although i shoot in landscape most of the time, there are many scenarios where i wanna take a quick portrait and post on social media. It is very tedious to do that with the smooth 5. U would have to turn off the gimbal, unmount, rotate the clamp, mount, rebalance, turn on. (Although there is a workaround where u could hold the gimbal horizontally) Some will say the rotation is limited blabla, the moment u look for all those extra functions, at that point just get a zhiyun crane with mirrorless camera
Agree, I have 0m4 & smooth 5, the smooth 5 is cumbersome & indicator lights are difficult to see. After a few runs I parked the smooth 5 & went back to the Osmo.

I bought DJI OM4 if you use eye level filming it is great . rest you will struggle with it. looks smooth 5 is good option.Very soon I will make short video useless stuff doesn't matter even if it portable.

same here, but I have a Samsung S21 Ultra and I was already struggling with DJI OM4, furthermore I hate this magnetic solution :( It is always a pain in the ass to put the magnetic clamp on the proper place on the phone and afterwards playing with the balancing process :S Zhiyun also seems to me a more professional option especially for wider range of angle by shooting. OM4 also struggled by low angle, I could here the noise from the motors. I would miss only the clone me feature :D I don't wanna change my S21 Ultra because the simple S21 and S21 Plus do not have that professional lens and camera options, so Zhiyun could do the job :)))
Andy, I can definitely feel the pressure on your shoulders to pick the one gimbal over the other (LOL) I use Zhiyun Smooth X for my iPhone and so far I am happy. The price is just right as right now I see a deal of 45% off (from $59.99) to just $32.99.
OM4. Never used the OM5 but it seems like the 4 is still faster to clip, unfold and power on. Since you have both Andy would love to hear your thoughts 💭

I wish I could have come across this video sooner. 4th of July is around the corner and I wanted to “remaster” a very small video I made a year ago in a 16:9 ratio instead of 1:1 (idek why I chose 1:1). Not only that but it’s my grandpas 60th birthday on the 16th of July so you can kinda see how I need this sooner rather than later. If it doesn’t arrive before the 4th, oh well. If it does, awesome introduction into Zhiyun tech :))

Can you get access to a reasonably recent vintage Android phone, and do some comparisons to app versions IOS vs Android? I ask because some are competitive, some favor Android, and for photography MOST favor IOS, for market share and other reasons. Even if you can't do a deep dive, a feature comparison, and perhaps cover issues you discover along the way. As always, thanks for your low key, yet detailed look at products and technique.
Well you should take the phone off the Smooth 5 first before stuffing it in the bag. It on only takes 15-20 seconds to put it on and start shooting. The OM5 still more portable.
I’m having issues with the om5 and moment case where the clip does not fit the phone with the case. So if u want to use the external lenses I don’t think you can use the om5 unless I’m doing something wrong. Loved your course on moment as well!! Thanks!!

Excellent review Andy. I didn't see a comment about the noises that the gimbals' motors produce and that are recorded in the videos. Does none of these gimbals generate noise when working?
The DJI also has the light attachment. The DJI also has the ability to attach counter weights specifically designed to counter lenses, you will se a small screw hole near the mounted phone, the weights are cheap. I cannot see a single place where the dji osmo isn’t superior in every way. I’m not a fan boy, I don’t even own one but when I do purchase it will be the DJI because it is just a way better design, it has everything the others have an more.
The compromises resulting from the fold up design makes the Osmo series frustratingly limited in usage. In addition, the Smooth 5 works perfectly with extra lenses and filters. If I wanted one with a built it selfie stick I would get the Vimble 2s. The OM5 sells mostly because of marketing hype but it is far from the best smartphone gimbal out there.
I really love it to. AI Sensor is awesome. That said, it really can't support a big camera with a lens. I want both, so ordered the Zhiyun for heavy setups.

If you own an iPhone 13 pro max 1tb with pro res you can't shoot pro res with the MIMO app, actually you can only shoot mp3 files and no MOV files with MIMO app. HUGE disadvantage
Smart Phones are getting bigger and powerful and most film makers who like features that these incredible phone allows us to do needs a powerful gimbal as such Z5 and it is the winner in all criteria , portability no one care as far as u have a powerful tool to get the job done. Now who keeps the tripod on when packing the gimbal, just take if off and now it solved that problem of portability. For mobile phone film makers Z5 is the winner in all ways.

I currently have a mous case in it which isn't too bulky like a OtterBox for instance. I'm looking for a gimbal to do automobile videography. So car meets ,drag strips , race tracks etc. For my use and my (big) phone what would you say is the better option?

Hi Andy I received my smooth 5 on Jan 4th 2022, whenever my turn on the gimbal it turns off in 5-10sec with PF blinking in "Red" when it is connected to power it does not power down. I have reached out to Zhiyun India and shared the video waiting for their response any idea why this happens?

@@chunmanf The OM5 got rid of essential things the OM4 had. The OM5 seems to be the more on-the-go blogger gimbal.
OM 5. They released an update that fixes the calibration issue. It was super annoying and was never really level, but it’s all fixed now.
Just returned my OM 5 and got the Smooth 5 today. Can’t wait to use it.

On the OM 5, you can hold down the button on the left side to zoom to .5 and push up to go all the way into 10x

the zoom wheel can be switched from zoom to focus so you can do some cool rack focus stuff if you wanted.

Yeah he hasn’t research the dji fully, there is also a light attachment, with that said the dji surpasses the other gimbal.

Smart Phones are getting bigger and powerful and most film makers who like features that these incredible phone allows us to do needs a powerful gimbal as such Z5 and it is the winner in all criteria , portability no one care as far as u have a powerful tool to get the job done. Now who keeps the tripod on when packing the gimbal, just take if off and now it solved that problem of portability. For mobile phone film makers Z5 is the winner in all ways.

I see it all the time where people will present an item to be used with phones and only mention iPhones are mentioned. Sometimes I have to ask if this item only works with iPhones?

Hello 👋 let me start off saying, this a amazing review. I'm currently in the market for a gimbal for my Samsung S22 ultra. It is a big phone with some weight to it. I currently have a mous case in it which isn't too bulky like a OtterBox for instance. I'm looking for a gimbal to do automobile videography. So car meets ,drag strips , race tracks etc. For my use and my (big) phone what would you say is the better option?

Great review. I recently purchase the Zhiyun Smooth 5 gimbal and I currently have a Samsung S20. I downloaded the ZY Cami app and paired it with the gimbal. The zoom is working but when changing to the focus option it doesn't seem to be working. Can you tell me what could be the issue?

Hey andy, i have been learning and practicing with an osmo mobile 2 and i feel its time to upgrade but i have a dilemma:should i continue ahooting with phone and get a smooth 5, or look for a gimbal i can use with my fujifilm xt20? Is it too much to chew on (fujifilm xt20 with a bigger and different gimbal)?

I received my smooth 5 on Jan 4th 2022, whenever my turn on the gimbal it turns off in 5-10sec with PF blinking in "Red" when it is connected to power it does not power down. I have reached out to Zhiyun India and shared the video waiting for their response any idea why this happens?

Basically, smooth 5 is for serious vloggers. OM5 is for no fuss vloggers.
The two apps are only similar IF THEY WORK. After you factor in DJI's horrible app support for Android, I am ready to upgrade to the Smooth 5.
