There is absolutely nothing quite like the sound of a perfectly played baritone sax. It's just so MEAN, I love it. Don't get me wrong, other saxophones are great too, but the baritone just has the "OOMPH" quality that is such a vibe. Love it.
The dancing was what got me. Bari saxes are NOT light and this dude is getting consistent sound all while doing his best Elvis. That's freaking impressive.

Man, everytime I come back to this video I'm reminded how fucking tight the drummer is. That synced up soloing is such a groove, he's an absolute master in producing a beat and the kit is tuned beautifully and mixed so incredibly well, all of the band is. Live perfomance mixes have come such a long way in the last decade and it's excellent to see. If I ever get back into sound engineering & running a desk in studio or concert, I hope I can keep up the new bar of incredibly tight and balanced mixes & masters that engineers have been pumping out over the last 6 or 7 years as the old guard have finally stepped down and appointed talented fresh blood that have a better grasp on the technology & access to better gear & environments.

This felt like the epic climax of a 2 hour movie of a young upcoming saxophonist finding his life destiny through childhood struggles, musical montages and that one last uphill battle -- with the love interest watching and cheering on, of course -- and then the happy ever after.
I see more of a final chase, a band of thieves racing across a bridge, closely followed by cops, with the hope of crossing and being home free, known for the biggest heist the city has ever seen.
Ya know, you can take the performer out of the street but not the street out of the performer and Leo is a PERFECT example of that. He just has fun while playing no matter who or what is around and despite that this is still an AMAZING bari solo.

Also concerto is not a form, a concerto is just a soloist or a group of soloist vs a larger force, be it an orchestra or a chamber orchestra or a string orchestra
sax player here, that shit is really easy, especially in the range he's playing in and the key, the palm keys on the left hand make it super easy with nearly a whole octave, nevermind his altissimo which I know piss all about
Strictly speaking, we all do. The CO2 we produce when burning sugar is greater than the amount of O2 we inhale. Which makes sense considering sugar & fat have tons of oxygen as part of the chemical structure and we're attaching carbon molecules to the O2 we breathe in to turn it into CO2.
The funny thing is, I'd normally say dance moves like that are a huge gimmick. But the funny thing is, even without any of the dancing this is one of the best bari solos of all time.
Leo P is a wizard with that bari sax. I keep Gravitating to Too Many Zoos - Bedford though for some crazy playing. however they have a lot of good insanity at a trio.

I was at this prom. Leo P absolutely stole the show with this and another solo just before. Went from not knowing who he was to becoming a fan for life!
The whole show was impressive, and I watched it solely because Leo P was part of it; he did not disappoint (and neither did any of the rest of the orchestra - they were all staggering performers, huge respect to them). I've now seen the whole performance a few times, and it still blows me away every time. As to Leo P... Well, the man's a skilled lunatic. It takes strength and stamina to carry a bari sax, never mind DANCING while playing one as expertly as he does.

The idea of a "promenade concert" was originally that where the audience could just stroll about whilst the music was played. For this concert series some of the audience can pay a small fee to stand for the whole concert, either down at platform level (Arena promenaders) or high up in the gods (Gallery promenaders). The venue is the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The Proms is a national institution in this country. Takes place annually. Its normally not like this particular video, but every now and then it goes rogue and we get some genius creativity. Check out Beardyman at the proms.
He became famous busking, but that's immediately after he graduated from conservatory at the Manhattan School of Music. He's a trained musician who happened to become famous on TH-cam. He's no random busker that was self-taught and lurking in the shadows.
It rarely happens that I become obsessed with a piece of music. Then I hear it, first many times and in the following weeks and months I hear it several times a day until it finds its place in my mind over experiences that I will never forget. This video and audio experience is one of those.
this is why i love jazz/ big band so much. there's just so much more freedom of expression and spontaneity as opposed to other forms of music which are usually more focused on repetition or more minor changes of common things for their creation of new bits of art
It's nowhere near as spontaneous because it doesn't have the same focus on improvisation, but progressive music gets you plenty of that freedom and lack of repetition. It's progressive death metal but go listen to Ghost of Perdition by Opeth - it's a goddamn musical journey.
As a fellow baritone sax player, it kinda frustrates me how much altissimo is used because it means I can NOT play this for the life of me (and I desperately want to!)

My first year or two with the saxophone were spent as a 12-13 year old on the Alto - my tutor promised he'd let me try a Tenor one day when I grew into it, but the Baritone was way, way beyond my weedy little frame. I'm an adult now, but I can't help be impressed by this dude's ability to throw a Baritone sax around like it's a plaything.
I’m a drummer, but acquainted with many sax players and anyone who has the lungs to blow this is not human. What a monster! Especially his reed banding!

That is, every time I've listened to this, I feel like the drums, esspecially those beautiful fills and accents, makes this entire solo so much better. To the point where while Leo's talent can't be denied, but the musical performance is equally, if not more, on the drummer. Edit: More or less, do you (or anyone else) feel the same about the drums here? Like the more I listen the more I'm blown away.
@XmanAdanacLax I said the same when I first started getting this recommended to me last year. The symbiosis of Sax & drums throughout this solo really elevate both, the kit is mixed really great for a live mix and has a nice timbre to it within the rest of the band which is still somewhat rare to see with recordings, it's very well done
The first part really shows the importance of groove. Most of the solo is arpeggiations and simple harmony outline, but the way he plays it sounds amazing.

this man is high key one of the modern sax greats - still remember when our middle school band director introduced us to Too Many Zooz, and I’ve been enamored with the bari sax since … it’s been almost seven years since then and this guy still rocks and I’m glad he’s getting some attention in other collectives too 🤘
as a sax player, this looks so good on our part 😭 of course i’m only in 8th grade but that’s literally so impressive i could only imagine how proud he was of himself after this masterpiece
It was a "late night prom" so it was a bit looser but there were a lot of people who stuck around from the classical prom earlier and had their minds blown (myself included). The BBC coverage was so sneering towards Leo P it really annoyed me when I re-watched it, though they did make the fair point that Charles Mingus (the prom being a tribute to him) would've probably wanted to thump him!
@@swalsh91 He had the crowd on their feet, in fairness to him. The Proms is usually pretty tame, prim-and-proper, but Leo had them mesmerised and they just went along for the ride. Music is *supposed* to take you away like that, and jazz especially! It flows from and speaks to the soul.
As a bari player who got to perform this with his collegiate band, I love every part of this. Those jump cuts were amazing. Also appreciate seeing these types of solos written out. Yeah it’s great to see what you can do just by ear, but seeing some of this written out gives me a better idea of what to do to spice up solos and how to phrase better. Thank you!

I always luv this sax guys videos. He is the complete package,IMHO. His solos are listenable. Be honest, a lot of Jazz solos sound like someone is practicing. The guy has the ability to create very melodic solos & the showmanship of a true entertainer. In his case, if he only had his level of ability in either category (his musicality or talent as an entertainer), he would be star material. BTW, it's not just talent. I am certain he has spent a lot of time working on all his skills. Sorry, I am just a fan.
Leo has amazed me since the first time i watched Too Many Zooz on the metro about 10 years ago. the whole band is impeccable as well. nasty funky vibes. keep it playing till the world melts
Wow... This Guy rocks altissimo... He's almost 2 octaves above the "highest note" on baritone saxophone... Explanation: altissimo are notes that are above the standard pitch range of your instrument and can't be played with a special finger position but have to be played with a special mouth technique which is a whole other story in woodwinds than in brass instruments. This is crazy hard and most woodwinds players will never master this. And to make it even harder, this can pretty much only be learned reliably on one given instrument. Change the corpus or mouthpiece and it will work completely different... So basically what this guy demonstrates with this 3-5 crazy high notes alone (even if you ignore the rest of the crazy solo) is a whole crapton of practice on this specific instrument, that went in those few notes alone....

It's not the harmonic though, this technique consists in using both the pelctrum and a part of the finger at the same time to create a really high pitched note. It works mostly for electric guitar, I don't know if I explained myself

You could trying searching youtube for "guitar artificial harmonic" to see an example of it to confirm we're both talking about the same thing. It is a harmonic, it's just more difficult than a "natural" harmonic because your left and right hand both have to be at the correct length to find a certain frequency. You can find several different harmonics by moving your right hand and "pinching" at different lengths of the string.

Ideally, playing in the upper register requires a small amount of air and is comfortable for your embouchure.

I was at this prom. Leo P absolutely stole the show with this and another solo just before. Went from not knowing who he was to becoming a fan for life!
The whole show was impressive, and I watched it solely because Leo P was part of it; he did not disappoint (and neither did any of the rest of the orchestra - they were all staggering performers, huge respect to them). I've now seen the whole performance a few times, and it still blows me away every time.
As to Leo P... Well, the man's a skilled lunatic. It takes strength and stamina to carry a bari sax, never mind DANCING while playing one as expertly as he does.

@@BibleStorm It was a BBC Promenade Concert (or BBC Proms for short) - a concert series that has been running for over 100 years. This particular concert was part of the 2017 season. The idea of a "promenade concert" was originally that where the audience could just stroll about whilst the music was played. For this concert series some of the audience can pay a small fee to stand for the whole concert, either down at platform level (Arena promenaders) or high up in the gods (Gallery promenaders). The venue is the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The Proms is a national institution in this country. Takes place annually. Its normally not like this particular video, but every now and then it goes rogue and we get some genius creativity. Check out Beardyman at the proms.

He became famous busking, but that's immediately after he graduated from conservatory at the Manhattan School of Music. He's a trained musician who happened to become famous on TH-cam. He's no random busker that was self-taught and lurking in the shadows.

It rarely happens that I become obsessed with a piece of music. Then I hear it, first many times and in the following weeks and months I hear it several times a day until it finds its place in my mind over experiences that I will never forget. This video and audio experience is one of those.

this is why i love jazz/ big band so much. there's just so much more freedom of expression and spontaneity as opposed to other forms of music which are usually more focused on repetition or more minor changes of common things for their creation of new bits of art
It's nowhere near as spontaneous because it doesn't have the same focus on improvisation, but progressive music gets you plenty of that freedom and lack of repetition. It's progressive death metal but go listen to Ghost of Perdition by Opeth - it's a goddamn musical journey.

My first year or two with the saxophone were spent as a 12-13 year old on the Alto - my tutor promised he'd let me try a Tenor one day when I grew into it, but the Baritone was way, way beyond my weedy little frame.
I'm an adult now, but I can't help be impressed by this dude's ability to throw a Baritone sax around like it's a plaything.
If you ever feel useless, remember there are other bari saxophones on that stage

Imma do u a favor a bring u back to this brilliant performance lol. I'm also a drummer and I'm curious if others have noticed the same as me. That is, every time I've listened to this, I feel like the drums, esspecially those beautiful fills and accents, makes this entire solo so much better. To the point where while Leo's talent can't be denied, but the musical performance is equally, if not more, on the drummer.
Edit: More or less, do you (or anyone else) feel the same about the drums here? Like the more I listen the more I'm blown away.

@XmanAdanacLax I said the same when I first started getting this recommended to me last year. The symbiosis of Sax & drums throughout this solo really elevate both, the kit is mixed really great for a live mix and has a nice timbre to it within the rest of the band which is still somewhat rare to see with recordings, it's very well done

The first part really shows the importance of groove. Most of the solo is arpeggiations and simple harmony outline, but the way he plays it sounds amazing.

this man is high key one of the modern sax greats - still remember when our middle school band director introduced us to Too Many Zooz, and I’ve been enamored with the bari sax since … it’s been almost seven years since then and this guy still rocks and I’m glad he’s getting some attention in other collectives too 🤘

After noticing this was at the proms, I just have this picture in my mind of somebody going to see a night of classical music and seeing this :D
It was a "late night prom" so it was a bit looser but there were a lot of people who stuck around from the classical prom earlier and had their minds blown (myself included). The BBC coverage was so sneering towards Leo P it really annoyed me when I re-watched it, though they did make the fair point that Charles Mingus (the prom being a tribute to him) would've probably wanted to thump him!
@@swalsh91 He had the crowd on their feet, in fairness to him. The Proms is usually pretty tame, prim-and-proper, but Leo had them mesmerised and they just went along for the ride. Music is *supposed* to take you away like that, and jazz especially! It flows from and speaks to the soul.

As a bari player who got to perform this with his collegiate band, I love every part of this. Those jump cuts were amazing.
Also appreciate seeing these types of solos written out. Yeah it’s great to see what you can do just by ear, but seeing some of this written out gives me a better idea of what to do to spice up solos and how to phrase better. Thank you!

I always luv this sax guys videos. He is the complete package,IMHO. His solos are listenable. Be honest, a lot of Jazz solos sound like someone is practicing. The guy has the ability to create very melodic solos & the showmanship of a true entertainer. In his case, if he only had his level of ability in either category (his musicality or talent as an entertainer), he would be star material. BTW, it's not just talent. I am certain he has spent a lot of time working on all his skills. Sorry, I am just a fan.

Wow... This Guy rocks altissimo... He's almost 2 octaves above the "highest note" on baritone saxophone...
Explanation: altissimo are notes that are above the standard pitch range of your instrument and can't be played with a special finger position but have to be played with a special mouth technique which is a whole other story in woodwinds than in brass instruments. This is crazy hard and most woodwinds players will never master this. And to make it even harder, this can pretty much only be learned reliably on one given instrument. Change the corpus or mouthpiece and it will work completely different... So basically what this guy demonstrates with this 3-5 crazy high notes alone (even if you ignore the rest of the crazy solo) is a whole crapton of practice on this specific instrument, that went in those few notes alone....
It's the same idea behind the pitch technique for the guitar if I'm not mistaken

What do you mean by "pitch technique". Pitch technique on guitar is "use an electronic tuner to tune to 440hz and then play on the right frets"
@@BibleStorm I don't know the correct name, my apologies. They always told me it's called "pitch" because I studied in another language. It's not the harmonic though, this technique consists in using both the pelctrum and a part of the finger at the same time to create a really high pitched note. It works mostly for electric guitar, I don't know if I explained myself
@@kazuhasfakeprofile8001 What you're describing is commonly called an artificial harmonic, also know as a pinch harmonic. You could trying searching youtube for "guitar artificial harmonic" to see an example of it to confirm we're both talking about the same thing.
It is a harmonic, it's just more difficult than a "natural" harmonic because your left and right hand both have to be at the correct length to find a certain frequency. You can find several different harmonics by moving your right hand and "pinching" at different lengths of the string.
