This is very interesting. I remember being on a grading job as the inspector(1984) where the contractor got a laser system with a regular tripod and a 15-foot high tripod where all of the machines were fitted with receivers so they could all work off the same BM at the same time. The project was about 1500 feet long and 700 feet wide and about 20 feet deep. The system was accurate to 1/16th inch at 1500 feet. The operators weren't happy about using this until they started with about 30 minutes to 1 hour in and they did not want to lose the system. There were also 2 linker rods with it to check grade. Everyone could work at the same time to get the same grade. With the laser line above the machines, no one machine shielded any other machine.

We just put this system on our new link built 170 and it makes basement digging way better than using a grade man and faster!

If the length of the teeth were calculated as part of the benchmark, how can curling flat and pulling back be 12"? Wouldn't one need to use the bucket teeth to check depth again after cleaning out the hole?
