8 firefighters hospitalied in rollover crash on Irvine freeway

- A rollover crash on an Orange County freeway left eight firefighters hospitalized Thursday night. The crash occurred in Irvine on the 241 toll road near SR-133 shortly before 7 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities said a ladder dropped on the road forced the oncoming truck to swerve away from the object. The maneuver caused the vehicle to strike a guardrail and overturn. The collision left six firefighters with critical injuries and two with minor injuries.

@SprucedandGussied Same here ! I'm praying for all involved. Especially for The driver of the Fire apparatus, as a Driver of such vehicles, for 20 + years I know how touchy, and top heavy they can be when having to make a split second evasive decision. This will likely be weighing on this operator for a very long time. I'm hopeful that all make a speedy recovery 🙏.

If you have to swerve to avoid hitting an inanimate object, don’t. Just hit it. I’ve hit an office chair and a large roll of carpet on separate occasions on the freeway. Only minor damage to my vehicle (midsize SUV). Avoided crashing and made it to my destination safely. Prayers for these firefighters 🙏
Do the toll roads record all vehicles traveling on them? Should be pretty easy to find a vehicle with a ladder and then no ladder.

sad, However a reminder to all drivers with gear on board make sure items are tied firmly down unable to "fly off" and cause this sort of thing.

There's cameras on the fwy. You can't enter or exit that fwy without being recorded and your plate. It's a toll road.

He should have drove straight into it and the ladder would have been ripped to pieces and no one would have been injured.
What he did was what the driver did on the Ttitanic.
Gigantic boat weighing tons swerves out of the way to avoid a iceberg floating in the ocean.
How did that end?
If the driver of the titanic had rammed the iceberg head on, the titanic would not have sunk and it would have made it to New York with a damaged bow.
If you are driving on the freeway, and you see a obstacle on the freeway ground, run over it, don't swerve your vehicle.
Any physics teacher will tell you if you if your swerve a heavy object like a vehicle, it is going to flip over.
Anyway, the fire chief and all fire chiefs need to make it mandatory for these guys driving these heavy trucks NEVER to swerve when they see a obstacle on the freeway.
Just ram it and the truck will not go out of control.
The fire departments may already have that policy in place, and the driver did not follow that policy.
And look what happened.

Horrible and completely senseless tragedy, can only pray for their recovery. So many people out there carelessly piling up their pickups and trucks with junk. Zero accountability here in California and it’s always that “I do as I please” attitude. Daily, I see heaps of the debris lying on freeway roads and on the shoulders. I notice on my commutes it stays there often for weeks and never seems to get cleaned up. Other states and countries have strict rules regarding securing loads, but not California. It really angers me.
So heart wrenching. These firefighters are true hero’s. I hope they’re all on.

They were trying to avoid a ladder that was in the middle of the road.
He said that they swerved to avoid a big ladder in the road, and they showed a photo of it, twice.
