    Hey, another great video. Thought I'd pipe in since my day job is audio production and I have a ton of experience with this an do use Wave plugins for this. MV2 is nice and note that Maxxxvolume from Waves is the same thing plus a few more features. I think these are toooooootally worth it when you find them on sale, and Waves does run sales regularly.
    For live I do use the waves plugin in Elgato Wave link and they work great. Waves does a really good job of keeping their latency really low, and don't use lots of CPU time, either.
    And I agree that Waves does a weird thing here in using different language than is industry standard, but the plugin does what it says and the ratios and timings they use, while they aren't controllable, they are great and work for basically everything you'd want. (and at least they don't describe things in percentage...)
    So anyway, if you can find either MV2 or Maxxxvolume from waves on sale for like 29$, which happens often, they're a screaming good deal and way easier to use than that free one. Worth it.
    Thanks!

    I immediately saw the use case here and sought out an older clip that was poorly recorded and desperately needed upward compression. This plugin(OTT) did a better job in a few clicks than my manual, tedious, time-consuming, audio envelop editing did(Vegas Pro). Thank you, sir! 🍻

    Obviously, if the option exist, try and use a low dnymaic range sound mix in the game to not have this problem in the first place. Unfortunately not every game has this otion, which really blows. Sometimes setting the audio settings to headphones or speaker can have an effect on dynamic range too. From my experience, headphones usually has less dynamic range than the speaker setting.

    So there are Upward compression plugins? Man, I searched and searched and couldn't find one. You've found more than one, awesome! Also, not sure if you've talked about it before, but I like to use loudness over peaks to set my track balance. There are a couple different LUFS plugins I use, one for live and one for post, to get my vocals as loud as possible without having TH-cam quiet it, which I think is either -14 or -16 LUFS, and I set my game between -7 to -10 LUFS lower than my vocals.

    For Live you could route your audio through DAW which then enables you to use a lot of other plugins which won't work with OBS. I did this with FL Studio and if only thing you do is routing audio it won't take awfully lot of resources, though I belive Reaper is what is actually recommended for this. This could get a bit tricky with some audio interfaces however, but for example with Focusrite Scarlett series I was able to do this with loopback i/o.
    It's a bit more advanced than doing it straight with OBS, but allows you to use whatever effects you want with Live stream over OBS and also with TeamSpeak and Discord or whatever else people use.

    Run Waves MV2 inside of DDMF's Metaplugin (which is a plugin acting as a plugin host, to create entire plugin chains, can save full racks as presets as well) and use that inside of OBS. This works, I can guarantee that.
    Metaplugin is also a paid plugin though.
    Even for regular music editing I use Metaplugin very often to route highpass filters on my sidechains so it only reacts to certain frequencies. It's a very usefull tool overall. It also has internal oversampling, so that aliasing is never gonna be a problem.
    Be warned though, Metaplugin might crash video editors. For some reason, video editing softwares really don't like it.

    You might look into Image-Line's Minihost Modular. It is a standalone free VST plugin host that you can route audio through (windows audio, a mic, etc) that might fix your issue running those plugins realtime/live along side OBS. I haven't tried it with the plugins from this video, but I've used it to run plugins that didn't want to work with OBS' native VST implementation, so its probably worth a shot.

    🤘I was going to save up for the Alex Audio Butler Automatic Mixing plugin but, this should also work just as well for what I've been looking to do with audio to improve my workflow in Davince Resolve. Now I can put the savings I would have put into the Auto Mixer into buying the Studio version of Resolve to make use of some of the new features I've been wanting to tinker around with. I might still want to try Alex's plugin but, maybe at a later time. Lol!

    I used VOLA to level my voice out in my videos for a while. It did upward and downward compression in one step, but I had to process my voice separately in Reaper before bring the export into Resolve for video editing because it wouldn't work in Fairlight. I think I'll give Xfer a shot, because the Revelator dynamic has helped a lot, but it hasn't fixed everything

    I used to record my voice, game audio, and discord audio into three separate tracks into Pro Tools, used EQ and compression on all the voice tracks and used a multiband compressor on the game audio. I’d then sidechain the multiband compressor on the game track to the voice tracks so that it would duck out the frequencies that clash with the voices so everything sounded consistent and loud without the voice getting lost. Then for fun, I’d send the voice tracks to like a delay/reverb track and would automate that for whenever me and my discord friends would go inside a cave or something for this cool environmental sound thing…. Then I realized that I spent wayyyyy too much time trying to release just one video, so I just rushed it and never did it again lol

This gives me more control on how to mix my audio with better tools for measuring levels and dynamics, and more plugin compatibility. I use voicemeeter to route my audio and reaper as my DAW but you can use any other DAW.

  • @UKDarkJedi
    @UKDarkJedi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I might be being dumb here (and let's face it, it wouldn't be the first time)
    How does this differ from an expander and compressor/limiter? Lifting the lower end to a normal level and pushing down the top end to a lower level.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Compressor: above the settable thresholds, louder sounds get made relatively less loud. Below the volume threshold, no change, linear.
      Expander: below the threshold, quieter sounds get made even quieter. Above, linear.
      Peak limiter: a standard compressor with short 1ms-order attack and release (symmetrical), and it looks ahead, by that amount, so it starts crunching just in time to tame the signal and releases just after it's no longer needed, while other dynamic processors generally use past volume to drive the gain setting. Peak limiters introduce a substantial amount of dynamic distortion when they kick in, as the audible-frequency drive signal gets intermodulated with audio signal.
      Upward compressor: above the threshold, linear. Below the threshold, quieter sounds get made louder.
      So upward compressor is the direct opposite of the expander. If you had these two in chain and with same settings, they would ideally cancel each other out, but due to implementation details, there would be some residual breathing and whatnot.
