  • Tibetan Buddhist monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery have begun creating a mandala sand painting in the lobby of RiverCenter for the Performing Arts in Columbus, Georgia.
The "Mystical Arts of Tibet" event began Sunday with an opening ceremony and continues this week. You can watch them work daily from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The closing ceremony is Saturday, September 14 at 12:30 p.m. and is followed with a procession from RiverCenter to the Chattahoochee River to disperse the sands. These events are free and open to the public.
According to the press release, Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning sacred cosmogram. Millions of grains of sand are carefully placed on a flat platform over days or weeks using long, narrow tools called chak-purs. Generally, it can take four monks working a combined 125 hours to complete a five-foot mandala.
If you can't make it in person, go to rivercenterfortheperformingarts for a livestream of their progress.
