This lesson explains how to answer SohCahToa questions for Maths GCSE (Higher and Foundation.)
Here are the key points to remember:
- The "opposite" side is always opposite the angle you know
- The "Hypotenuse" is always the longest side
- The adjacent side is the third remaining side
- The SohCahToa acronym can be used to help memorise the formulas relating these sides

Lol this explained it better than my teachers!
Swares
To remember the sohcahtoa acronym.
sex on hard concrete always hurts the orgasmic areas
That was how I always remembered it from about age 14.
Lmao dude what the actual fu-
Or just “sohcahtoa” since it’s a 3 syllable word and u should be able to remember a single 3 syllable word unless u have been snorting glue since about age 5
@@sloosh2188 Delighted to see your sense-of-humour bypass operation was a total success. :)
No way. Some old hobo caught another hobo trippin on acid
Or, and hear me out, sohcahtoa. Really not that hard.
I’ve never seen a more useful TH-cam channel thank you!
Wow, thanks!
@@revisionboostno worries mate, it’s the truth
Ty this has always confused me sm!
I have a test on this in under an hour and I had no idea wth was going on, y’all are life savers for real for real.
Damn man. You explained this so well
This is amazing thank you holy why did it take a reel for I’ve been watching 20 min videos to figure out
THANK YOU SO MUCH I FINALLY UNDERSTAND THESE QUESTIONS 🙏🙏🙏😊😊😊
Very simple thank you
this is much better explained than anything else in the world!
It's an popular function
It's:
A* / sin a = B* / sin b = C* / sin c
As A*,B*,C* is the sides of a triangle
And a,b,c is the angles that opposite it's sides
the proof is also nice
A = (1/2)absinγ = (1/2)bcsinα = (1/2)casinβ
times everything by 2
2A = absinγ = bcsinα = casinβ
divide everything by abc
2A/abc = sinγ / c = sinα / a = sinβ / b
u can ignore the area expression, put in alphabetical order, then take the reciprocal of everything to obtain
a / sinα = b / sinβ = c / sinγ
I saw my math teacher with a piece of graph paper yesterday. I think he must be plotting something.
😂
lol
I left a plant in my school’s maths class room, but it grew square roots
Do you know what seems odd to me? Numbers that aren’t divisible by two.@robo0o
That's a good one😂😂😂
The sine rule also works🙂. I think I'm gonna start enjoying math
I never learn SohCahToa
I can easily remember the 6 trigs function.
SinX=o/h=1/CscX
CosX=a/h=1/SecX
TanX=o/a=1/CotX=SinX/CosX
CscX=h/o=1/SinX
Secx=h/a=1/CosX
CotX=a/o=1/TanX=CosX/SinX
I’ve watched this multiple times thank you for posting it
@revisionboost One key thing to remember is that the hypotenuse is NOT always the longest DIAGONAL length, but it can be a flat straight line too!
Thanks man, you are the maths god
Happy to help!
In a few days, I have my verbal math exam, and I've never understood SohCahtoah. Thank you for saving my exam!
THANK YOU!
You're welcome!
Where did you get 8.19
he plugged it into his calculator
Using Deg function on the calculator not rad !! I did that at first then realised where my mistake was
@@kasovgy is it possible to calculate it manually or do we have to use calculator?
Here in germany we instantly learn it
The longest side is not the hypotenuse it's actually where the 90degrees is facing
No joke this actually helped cuz I didn’t have any clue what I have to use sin, cos and tan for thanks for the good explanation 👍
Am I the only one to notice that his marker became something weird for a second at the beginning of this video?
i was looking for this comment lol
I have only started learning some trigonometry in the last few days and this helps me a lot. Is using a scientific calculator considered cheating at all?
How to explain simple things in a complicated way 😂
Just the simple 3 things but He teaches Sin, Cos, and Tan as funny way to remember it as SohCahtoa. I think his teaching is math for Dummies
I remember as suckCatToe lol
Very useful for making a perfect a sqaure in carpentry
cos(alpha)= a/c,
sin(alpha) = b/c,
tan(alpha) =b/a,
Where c is the hypotenuse,
a is the adjacent side ( to the angle alpha ), and b is the opposite side.
From there it's just a matter of seeing which two terms you know already in order to find the third one.
Very useful technique it is even easier than remembering the sin and cos definitions I use it all the time thanks
Rwalize that x=10sin(55)
My Maths basis is not good. Can you please make a video about the cross multiplication in formulas? Like if f=ma then how can we find m ? Etc and with with big formulas
Appreciated!
thank you so much
You can't simply remember the trigonometric ratios?
thanks bro u saved my ass

You just saved me
Everytime I see cm my brain immediately goes “multiply by 10^-2”, physics man
Too real Bruh 😭💀 and then when I’m actually doing physics and I’m off by 2 powers of ten and I get confused 💀
how'd you get from 10Sin(55) to 8.19 cm?
he plugged it into his calculator
Change the settings of the calculator to Deg not rad !!
I remember this how my Air Force tech school sgt told me:
We all remember the order of Sine, Cosine and Tangent, yes? Now just remember Ozzie Has A Hairy Old Ass----
S = O/H
C = A/H
T = O/A
Any method helps, if it works for you. 😅
The sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 180°. If you have 90 and 55 to 180 = 35
Bro.. that’s really cool but not only could a 5th grader told me that, but it has nothing to do with the video
find x:
The x is alr in the opposite triangle
I might sound stupid but I am only in 7:th grade, how do you multiply with Sin?? Does sin have a value or what?
Does it mean that if the angle were to be on the opposite side represented as Adjacent in the picture, it would have been opposite?
That's right!
So the opposite isn't necessarily a fixed position
@@ugeziemmanuel2123no it's all relative to the specific angle
I could have solved the problem if I knew what is the value of sin 55
I googled it 😂
Somone help I don't understand the rearranging bit
X=10sin35'
Now you see, this puzzles me: why would you get even 2 likes for typing the _wrong_ angle in your comment?
The oh is in front of the S?
That this is also available in Physics
Another way of solving
One angle is 55 so the third angle is 35
One let's name O as 11y and A as 7y as they are in ratio of 55:35
(11y)^2+(7y)^2=100
121y^2+49y^2=100
170y^2=100
y^2=100/170=0.588
y=0.7668
So x=O=11y=11×0.7668=8.4
that's not always true, taking this ratio implies that the tangent (that is the ratio of the opposite side to the adjacent side) of this 55 degree angle is exactly (11y)/(7y) which is 11/7, but in fact tan(55⁰) ≠ 11/7, in gener tan(x) ≠ x/(90-x), this may be a good approximation for some x but clearly not always a good choice.
When your calculator is in rad mode not deg mode i gwt the wrong answer no wonder i always get it wrong please add this to the video!!
Sailors Often Have Curly Auburn Hair Till Old Age.
Why do I keep getting -9.99 instead of 8.19?
I get this too -9.99755 so at 2 DP 10.00 so really don't understand it I understand how to do it but never get the answer correct 💁
Change the settings to Deg instead of rad on the calculator!!
cos is for opposite not sin
Don't do this on an exam! sin is definitely the Opposite / Hypotenuse.
@@revisionboost yeah sorry i read the book backwards while revising
10sin55=x
Show more videos please
I'm only grade 7.
Does the angle always have to be opposite?
10sin55

I’m bad at math, like really bad, but I liked geometry at school. How on earth can there be a 55 degree angle with a 90 degree angle? What am I missing?
Hey! angles in a triangle have to add up to 180 so 55 degrees and 90 degrees in the same triangle is fine :)
@@revisionboost shouldn’t it be 90/60/30 or 90/45/45?
@@madarasmalka375 Not necessarily, as long as the three numbers add up to give 180 you can have whatever you like
@@revisionboost ok, thanks, I’m starting to get it.
@@madarasmalka375you can have a triangle with 1°, 5.2° and 173.8° if you like. Just has to have all three angles adding up to 180°
That's the most ridiculous way to remember trigonometry. How is it hard to remember tan is sin/cos and is also opposite/adjacent. So sin is apposite/hypotenuse and cos is adjacent/hypotenuse.
It’s what we learn in high school as well, it’s actually quite useful and can be hard to understand when first learning
It’s helpful in the beginning for an easy way to remember when you’re young, once you use trig a bit you stop having to think about it as it becomes second nature
@@BurgoYT exactly, but as a person still in high school I find it real useful
It's just a helpful mnemonic for people to use to remember the ratios
Why do I get -9.9?

Sorry but the angle must be less around 53 not 55,,, why because the triple of (3, 4, 5) or (6, 8, 10), Thanks

wait rlly? I call it 'haitch'. I'm confused, I thought the name of a letter starts by the same letter.

Or 'G' is pronounced as 'Gee'.
The letter ‘w’ begins with D, the letter ‘M’ begins with E.

how come u arent using the adjacent?
Because adjacent doesn't have a value. We need x and something we know, which is hypotenus with the value of 10.
@@am_a_Muhammad thanks i commented this when i had clue abt trigonometry now i understand
