    Tom Miller - that really depends on your needs. You also need to specify which Zeiss 50mm lens - I have reviewed the Makro Planar 2/50mm, older 50mm Planar 1.7/50mm, and the Planar T* 1.4/50mm. I'll be adding the Zeiss Otus 1.4/55mm next week!

    Thank you Dustin for the in dept review. I had the chance to play with this lens yesterday at a camera shop in Phoenix and loved it. I came back and checked out several reviews and loved what you had to say. I will be purchasing this in the next month.

    Yes, I do agree with you that the SIgma 50mm ART is the best autofocus lens out there right now. I do not believe there is anything out there at the moment that can come close to the image quality of this lens. For the price, I don't think anyone can go wrong with any of the Sigma's ART series lenses.

Next week it’s with me on an outdoor portrait shoot, so looking forward to taking it through the paces. It feels a real solid lens albeit heavy. I’ve been a big fan of Sigma due to their quality and price point.

    I borrowed a friend's copy to try out a gig in town this evening. I've got to say the results are nothing short of stunning. My existing Canon 50mm 1.8 STM is still very good, outstanding for the price - but the Sigma really is something else as you say. I can't think of any lens I've tried so far that is as good (and I love my old 85mm 1.8).
    In terms of actually buying one, I dunno - I think my friend got lucky with a particularly good one, because my focus was spot on almost every time tonight, which is also better than any other lens I have. There does seem however to be an awful lot of users who have had their experience spoiled by poor AF inconsistency....
    Another great review Dustin, thank you :)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately it has always been a slightly random process as to how consistently focusing a lens you will get. I do believe that Sigma has gotten much better on this front, though.

  • @tomofmiller
    @tomofmiller 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The 50mm 1.4 planar you reviewed at the end of last year. I can get it for roughly the same price as this sigma 50 arts lens. I know this one will be a lot sharper and has AF, but something draws me to the nostalgic feel of the Zeiss. My main uses are a bit of street photography and a multipurpose fixed focal length for general use, I just need a voice of reason! Would be going on my crop 70d currently, but looking to upgrade to the 5d mk 3 if that makes a difference

    Hi Dustin,
    I'm glad you said something about the focus issue, I didn't realize the 50mm had it too.
    I had just about talked myself into trying Sigma again, but I have been here before and I just wasn't crazy about having to deal with all that again.
    I have had the same problem with focus in the new Sigma lenses in the past.
    When the new Sigma 18-35 F1.8 came out, everyone raved about how great it was.
    So I got excited about it and bought it, and the images were fantastic when it focused correctly.
    But it was inconsistent, stunning when it was right, and drove me crazy when it wasn't.
    But after spending that much money for what seemed like a very nice lens, it was so inconsistent so I bought the USB dock for it thinking I would fine tune it.
    But overall I just ended up frustrated, this is to much money for a lens that should work right out of the box, and they put the focus issues on the end user with the USB dock.
    I really don't mind adjusting a lens to a body, but after this experience I just don't want the hassle.
    Sigma is missing something, but I am sure being a third party and trying to get your equipment to work with Canon, Nikon, etc is not easy. I'm sure they are not giving you the help you need to make it work correctly, so I'm sure its a challenge for them.
    Anyway I sent it back to B&H,,,, even they told me it was too much to pay for something that that should work.
    So I ended up getting a Canon L lens instead, no more focus issues and I am much happier.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      skillenm It's unfortunate, and I really do hope that Sigma gets that kink worked out, because they are creating lenses with fantastic optics right now.

    Brilliant review, and very interesting point about how primes should be pocketable. I almost started to forget this point completely. I have recently got the Canon 50mm f1.2, and I am currently testing that. Do you see a compelling reason to change the 50L and the 50A?
    Thanks again, I subscribed for more.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      For those of us who use multiple lenses in most venues, this is still a pretty big deal. I think the 50L vs 50A debate comes down to individual tastes. The 50A is sharper; the 50L will have more artful rendering.

    Great review. I like that is was filmed with the 85mm Otus, lol. I've got to wonder how this Sigma compares to the 55mm Sony Zeiss f/1.8 E mount lens though. They're about the same price, The Sony being lighter and smaller but I hear it's a razor as well.

    Nice to hear the shout out for the EF 35mm IS - it's a lovely, underrated little lens and I'm still using mine on my EOS-R. As for that Sigma, it is truly amazing, but I'm not sure about the size of it together with an adaptor... feel like I should wait and see if they ever bring out an RF mount version. That would be wonderful, because it really is a stunning lens. Never tried another prime of any length quite like it.

    How is this lens compared to 35mm ART in terms of sharpness and micro contrast/overall contrast?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Koca, I recommend taking a look here: www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=829&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=941&CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0 . You can directly compare sharpness at various apertures. They are roughly equal, but the 50mm has less vignetting.

  • @melodychest9020
    @melodychest9020 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review as usual. So, would you say that apart from the Zeiss Otus and Milvus that this is the best 50mm 1.4 lens in Jan 2020?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For Canon EF? Yes. For Canon RF - no, or for Sony FE - no. The RF 50mm F1.2L is exceptional...as is the Sony Zeiss Planar 50mm F1.4. I would choose either of those lenses over this one, but that's irrelevant if you are shooting on Canon EF.

    • @melodychest9020
      @melodychest9020 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Yes am still on the EF and for what I do my 5D II is enough and I believe the lenses are the ones that make the difference for stills quality! But after hearing about the Sigma autofocus issues I think I am staying away! By the way, why do lenses like Canon 1.2L, Sigma 1.4 Art and Milvus 1.4 stop down only to f/16?! Whereas other lenses go down to f22 and f32! Cannot understand that, cos for closeups the f/22 or f/32 could be handy for shooting a wide DOF .. of course one can move away a bit to get a wide DOF at f16 but you have to end up cropping depending on the lens one is using. Does it get much more expensive to make lenses with a wide aperture range or are there other reasons!?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend the purchase only if you get the Sigma dock as well. I don't think the EOS 3 body had microadjustment, and being able to tweak the lens' focus is going to be important.

      The Zeiss Makro Planar 50mm f/2 is a pretty awesome lens. Very versatile. If you are mostly a video shooter then a Zeiss would be a great pick. Hey Dustin.I love your channel. I like the fact you take your time and consider each piece carefully. It's like settling down to a documentary. Thank you.
    I'm conflicted here. I'm looking for a fast 50mm and although I'm about to take delivery of an R6, I can't afford the RF version right now but might be able to in March next year. I shudder at the thought of spending that much though!
    Meanwhile, I have the chance of a good deal on a Canon EF f1.2L and I'm not sure about this or the Sigma. In every optical test, the Sigma performs better BUT the weight! I haven't been able to hold one ( out in the sticks and coronavirus restrictions where I live ) but I have been told it is not only heavy compared to the EF Canon but also is more forward-weighted making it less weirdly. If this is so, I'd imagine putting on a converter for the R6 would add to the problem. Actually, I prefer the look of the Canon in every area except that in a lot of pictures I've seen taken with it there is some very pronounced CA. That's the only reason I'm considering the Sigma. I don't really care the Sigma is sharper it's this issue that bothers me most.
    Have you found the balance to be further forward in your experience?
    Also if I saved up for the RF, in your view, having tried them all, would it feel lighter/more balanced on the R6 than the Sigma? I heard a reviewer saying the RF didn't feel any heavier than the EF on the R6. Can this really be true?
    Thanks for reading my long-winded questions.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, you might want to wait (if you can) and see what comes down the pike in the next year. I feel like the Tamron, Sigma, and Samyang are going to kick in some options in the near future.

    Hi Dustin,
    Do you rather recommened the tamron 45mm 1.8 or this sigma 50 mm Art lens? I don't do video work as much, so tamron's VC is not of great importance to me. However I often heard about the autofocus issue with the sigma ...
    Does the IQ of the Tamron come somewhat close to this sigma lens?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Anny Huang The Sigma has a very slight advantage in absolute image quality, though the Tamron is very close. The Tamron has (in my experience) more consistent autofocus (though not quite as fast as the Sigma). The Sigma has less chromatic aberrations, the Tamron less vignette. The Tamron has weather sealing and is smaller and lighter, though a bit better built. It can focus down much further, a feature I find very useful, so I went with the Tamron myself. The Sigma is a great lens other than the occasionally inconsistent autofocus.

    If the auto-focus misbehavior is only intermittent, then what can be done by making adjustments via a computer program? It seems that the problem is electro-mechnical, so that even with adjustments, it will continue to misbehave.

      Dustin Abbott Or it is your Canon Camera with it's old dusty sensors. I use a Nikon D810 with my SIgma 50 Art..and have zero issue on Autofocus. But..for those using SIgma on their Canon dusty sensors and cannot get a in focused shot, there is a switch on the Sigma 50 Art, that can cancel your Canon's inability to focus right, Manual. lol And by the way, neither Canon or NIkon Companies give out their clues of auto focusing issues to any 3rd Party Lenses, including Sigma...SO BUYERS BEWARE...but this issue is usually with Canon, they build old dusty sensors....that are not up to today's standard.

    Nice review! I own this lens and I find it amazing. The IQ is from a another world. No focus issues what soever. On more then one body I might add. I had 2 Canon 50mm F1.2 in the past and they where a disaster, focus issues and a rather mediocre IQ.
    The only disadvantage is the size. It is nice to have a small 50 mm for street shooting and this lens is not one of them. The Canon 50mm F1.4 is small but forget to use it wide open or even at F2. If you can live with that then it is a fine little lens.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leo Jonkers I'm glad to hear you have had a good experience with focus. The focus issues seem to be fairly random. I tested a 50L a few months ago and had no focus issues at all...so you just never know!

    • @leojonkers3181
      @leojonkers3181 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dustin Abbott Your right, you never know. The older Sigma F1.4 had also a name of having focus issues and sometimes I experienced that as well. On that lens there really was a problem. But Sigma has made big steppes ahead. What I also noticed that the Canon 1Ds mark III that I used to own was not as good in focusing with third party lenses. The 5D mark II and now my 6D are better in that regard. I had return my Tamron 24-70 to check the focus till I find out that it had no issues on my 5d mark II and now replaced by the 6D alright again.

      Hmmm, let's say "different". The Sigma is a hair sharper, but not enough to be noticeable in most applications. If you have a high resolution body, the VC of the Tamron makes it the better real world lens. The Sigma's bokeh is a bit smoother, but color rendition favors the Tamron. The Tamron has more accurate AF.

    • @AminTheMystic
      @AminTheMystic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Not "hair sharper" - for d800 there is a 7 point difference. That is quite a bit actually.
      "If you have a high resolution body, the VC of the Tamron makes it the better real world lens."
      How? If you have a high mp camera - the Sigma wins hands down. The difference in detail really comes through.
      "but color rendition favors the Tamron" Highly subjective and likely to change camera body and light situation.
      "The Tamron has more accurate AF."
      I'll give you that!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By 7 points, I assume you are referring to DXO? Having used both lenses extensively, I can tell you that there isn't a lot of real world sharpness difference. And what I mean in reference to a high MP camera is that in many situations you will get the sharper result out of the stablized lens, as high MP lenses really punish motion blur. I've tested many lenses and demonstrated this before.

    • @AminTheMystic
      @AminTheMystic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But then you wouldn't expect there to be a lot of difference between the latest lens from all manufactures at 50mm. And isn't the purpose of these lenses to push them to their max? For "daily use" the Nikon 50mm is more than good enough.
      I run a small gfx agency and we do a lot of product shots for adverts. For prints, I replaced our old MF gear with Nikon d810 and now d850. So the extra mp difference mattered. I wanted Otus - way too expensive.

    Very nice review. It's been 2,5 years since it came on the market and the inconsistent AF is still present on most of the art series; atleast from my experiences. A couple of firmware updates later and the issue is still not solved. The USB dock can't calibrate random mistakes either. Very unfortunate because the optics are stunning.

    Hello Dustin.
    I really like this review because i think it is as accurate as lens review can be. I own this lens and i absolutely love the images you are able to get with it but at the same time it makes me sad that the AF isn't that great. From my 5dmk4 using live view it is at front and using viewfinder it is at back, and sometimes all over the place on both. But i don't know what 50mm lens with af could be as sharp and so on with same kind of price as this sigma lens.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's definitely a little frustrating that such a good lens optically is so held back by the focus system. I'm hoping that Sigma makes a Sony FE version of this lens that focuses accurately and allows you to get the best out of it.

I love the 45mm better than the 50mm, comforting to have weather sealing and manual focus is superior to the Sigma in my opinion. I do have the Sigma Art 24-35mm f/2 and it is great for landscape, but I enjoy Tamron resolution on my Nikon's. I think my next purchase will be Tamron 24-70 vc. I enjoy your insightful reviews. Hello, I use this lens on my Nikon D850, I never had any focus problem, in fact I think the focus is much more accurate than most lenses I use, as Otus is better, just in the center of the image, in large apertures the Sigma lens is more sharp at the edges, as it has autofocus, it can be said that there is no better lens on the market at a distance of 50mm

    Having had focus issues with the 35mm ART, I just can't allow myself to buy this lens. Like you, I'm thrilled with the 35mm f/2 IS USM from Canon and will simply wait for Canon to release a stabilized 50mm and 85mm lens rather than purchase the Sigma ART lenses. It's simply not worth the hassle to me. Additionally, I like to "vote" with my dollars and me spending money on Sigma's ART lenses when they haven't nailed down the AF is simply telling Sigma that it's okay to bring such a product to market - and I don't believe it is. Unfortunate for me, unfortunate for Sigma.
