    Glad those drinks had lids on! I’m a new proud owner of the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art DG lens. Already seen some nice results - and yes you’re right about how they look in Lr without any editing

    Excellent observation on the FOCUS BREATHING... I have the Sigma ART 24-105mm f4 & 35mm f1.4 and could not be happier with either of them. :)

    Do you recommend using this 50 mm Sigma lens for still shots of classic cars? Cars are not in motion and they are used for the cover of a magazine. Just posing the car is that different angles from about 12 ft away maybe.

    Awesome review.... I was actually looking for a review of this lens and found yours. Thanks for the clear and very informative review. This would be high on my list of lens, since I do not have a 50mm at this time. Thanks again.

    You forget to mention something, Canon 50 f1.2L is a weather sealed lens while Sigma is not. This is quite important for a photographer that do travelling a lot and do landscape.

    I've shot with both lenses. There is such a difference in the photos that I think I will keep both. Depending on what mood I'm in will determine what lens I'll use. I know, I know, I know.......Most people will think I'm crazy, but I love the looks of both very much. One lens lives in an artistic dream world and the other lives very sharp, straight foreword, realistic world. I like different looks to my photos and these two lenses have very, very different looks for sure.

    How much better is the Sigma compared to the Nikon 50mm f1.4G? Because the price is substantial. So is the Sigma twice as good or can you get good results out of the Nikon lens (I only have the Nikon 35mm f1.8g on D7100 to compare it to)?

    I currently have the canon 50 1.2L and I was curious about the sigma art. What I have noticed is that the 50 1.2L is slower at focusing or finding focus in "some" situations. Is the Sigma 1.4 faster at focusing in low/high contrast areas compared to the 1.2? I have also seen and heard a bit about the fact you can plug the sigma directly into your computer and adjust function via usb/ software Is that really anything worth looking into or was that sigma just putting an "extra" in to say they have it.

  • @stakstonkvinge

    I have both the 50L and the 50ART. What nobody seems to be talking about is the flat one-dimensional pictures the 50ART gives you. Portraits from the ART lens looks like stickers on a blurry picture. The 50L makes your subjects look 3 dimensional, and therefore much better.

Would you get the same amount of focus breathing in the Canon 50mm EF f/1.4 USM? Is there a 50mm lens of similar price/quality that you think is better suited for video? Thanks...

    Thank you for what came across as a well balanced review. Most of my photography is wildlife and Landscapes, so the 'normal' range isn't my most used lenses. But I'm getting a few studio based request, but certainly not enough to give any credibility to spending the Canon type of money. I was thinking of this lens to give the 50mm on the 5DIII and 80mm on the 7DII, I know I won't get the same degree of separation on the 7DII but more often than not I will be working at a shallow DOF. One thing I didn't notice in your review was the front focusing issues many have spoken of with the Sigma, but would you say if I had any issues I'd be better, due to different sensor sizes, trying to address them in camera rather than the Sigma Dock? And Pye, your daughter is a beautiful model but unfortunately experience tells me in 5 years she'll be saying "Not another photo Dad."

  • @TheMindProjection

    I actually sold that lens again because I felt the images were too de-saturated and flat. Boring really. I Replaced it with the 58mm nokton, which I'm way more happy about.Ken W kind of confirms this (the things about the sigma)
    What are your thoughts on how the sigma handles stuff like micro-contrast, perceived depth, rendered depth?

    Nice review! I have one question though... Do you guys know how the sigma 50mm art compares to its brother 35mm art? I mean in terms of the same high contrast and color characteristics. I have a 35mm art and a 50mm 1.4 canon but haven't noticed a big difference in contrast and color. If I would buy the sigma 50 would like to know if it will show radical contrast and color in comparison to the 35mm art. Thank you very much!

    Interesting that SLR staff didn't encounter focusing problems with the Sigma lens - it is all over the Internet. The focusing problem exists due to the simple fact that both Canon and Nikon do not give 3rd party manufacturers their focusing algorithms, thus forcing them into reverse engineering, This often doesn't work well. This is also the reason Zeiss Otus series lenses are manual focus. With such superb optics - what a pity... :-(

      Have you tried this lens? It focuses much faster and more accurate than 3rd party lenses in the past. If I didn't know it was a Sigma I would never say "this lens focuses slow or inaccurate". Actually the 50mm 1.2 Canon is known for slow AF. That being said if you're comparing it to a manual focus only lens you can flip the switch and do that if you want.

  • @trevorpinnocky
    @trevorpinnocky 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I liked this discussion. Just a couple of things.
    1. A lens can't dictate your artistic vision as a photographer, imo. I would say you can definitely still process the images to be less 'sharp and contrasty' if that is not your style. I would say a lens like the 50mm 1.2 doesn't give you that flexibility in terms of going the other direction. The lens is contrasty by design for sharpness.
    2. The Sigma absolutely is profiled in the latest release of ACR. Lens correction is available in both LR, PS CC, and PS CC 2014. And likely to anyone running ACR 8.5 Even still 1/2 stop of vignetting? I don't think so. Maybe 1/4 stop at best. And acceptable because there is a lot more glass to vignette than the Canon.
    3. It's $949 not $999
    4. Chromatic aberration is way better on the Sigma than Canon. Shooting wide open is fantastic, but not when you have purple and green all over the place...
    5. People looking for reasons to hang on to the 50mm 1.2 are reaching at straws...

    Another reviewer of this lens found that the bokah was terrible compared to the Canon f/1.2 . I saw their sample pics and had to agree. By bokah I mean the general quality or smoothness of out of focus areas. I'm thinking, based upon my utter lack of knowledge of optics, that it might have something to do with how sharp the lens is.

    yep the sigma loses more light compared to the canon. transmission suffers a bit more in the sigma primarily due to having more glass for light to pass through. still a great lens

    Come on guys... You should know the difference between vingetting and transmission.. The problem you are talking about, that the Sigma is darker than the Canon at the same settings is transmission.

    A lens can't add colour or contrast. If there is a difference between two lenses, the less contrasty one has a failing. The same effect will result in the better lens looking underexposed, as stray light is not dispersed into areas that should be dark.

    • @franksj1982
      @franksj1982 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lenses can't add color or contrast? This is exactly what polarizers do. They could have incorporated similar, yet less obtrusive features in their design. Perhaps this explains the difference in transmission? I am not saying this is what they did, but how you think a slider in lightroom can affect contrast and color, but the actual glass in a lens can't is beyond me.

    • @franksj1982
      @franksj1982 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      donepearce There are 13 elements (read: pieces of glass) in this lens. A Polarizer is most commonly made of, you guessed it a piece of glass! You've never see the "contrast" slider in Lightroom? Sorry, no one can help you understand then.....

    look a good video is a good video, but dont sacrifice a good video for bad editing, Stop using multiple cameras if ya not looking at the camera that is the post option taken in editing.. Not looking directly at the camera is a contemporary stylistic fasion, not a screw up. It's done in lots of talking to camera stuff now. As to why it's done, that I've no idea.

      Glenn, we see this type of usage for camera work during interviews and what not all over the place. Do you have an example of the style you are mentioning, specific to the type of videos we are creating? We are creating casual conversation style interviews and gear chat.

    • @MrEzPc
      @MrEzPc 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, just my first world problem.. Bugs me when people don't look at the camera, straight down the lens, while conversing with the viewer.. I'd had a bit to drink and got opinionated LoL

    • @payamjirsa
      @payamjirsa 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glenn F Nothing wrong with critique, I am just asking you to point us to an example if you can. We want the bits to be organic, so we use the camera to switch angles whenever there is a piece we need to cut out. But, if we are constantly looking into whatever camera we switch into, it isn't going to feel natural, it is going to feel directed. I like critique, but if you can help us with a solid example, it will give us a better idea of how to improve production value.

    • @MrEzPc
      @MrEzPc 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can't really give examples as I'm not at a PC to rewatch, but they way you have just explained is the way you intend then that's cool. As I said few drinks, opinion, or outburst as some may say LoL but still enjoyed the video..
