I have SO much to learn! This year I grew onions, garlic, scallions and potatoes for the first time. I'm so confused about when to harvest. Thank you for this video, it helps with the garlic!
Good stuff, Rick. 👍 My hard necks aren't quite ready to harvest. I cut all of the scapes off about 2 weeks ago (made lots of yummy pesto & pickled a few jars of scapes as well). I've got about 100 heads that I'll be harvesting...maybe by the end of this month. Onions & shallots aren't far behind. My shallots are freaking huge, over 3" diameter already and they're not done growing, lol.
Storage needs to be dark and airey, curing doesn't need to be dark, you can just do it in a garage or even a covered patio or shed. I've never frozen garlic before so I have no idea what that would do to it. But I feel like it would make it mushy.
Sometimes my wife has taken the fresh garlic that I've grown and put it through a food processor, then filled up ice cube trays with the ground up garlic and froze them (keeping in mind how much garlic you might want to use in a single meal.) She would then just pop the garlic out of the ice cube tray and add it to what she was cooking. Just a thought, and it works well for us.
@@prayerwarrior424 I've done this before. Don't fret. You'll still get garlic, but the bulbs & cloves will be small and they won't store very long. Learn from this and be ready to plant in the Fall for next year's crop.
Ty for this info!!!!
You're Welcome!
Thanks

You are so welcome!
Thanks 👍👍
No problem 👍
Hey guys! I hope you enjoy today's video! Let me know when you are planning on harvesting your garlic!
When do you plant garlic cloves
Fall is best! Here's a link to a video I did on when to plant:

We harvested our garlic about a week ago. Satisfied with the results considering we planted on Christmas Day. We are getting organized.
Glad to hear it can go in that late. One year were planted ours over Thanksgiving weekend and still had a great crop!
Ohh how I love garlic!! I have not added it, but hope to. As a new gardener, your information is very valuable; thank you!
You are so welcome!
Great video, thanks!
You're welcome!
Great video maybe next year I will try to grow garlic
You should!
It's been raining on my garlic all summer, so I'm not going to have a 7-day no-water period.
Good stuff, Rick. 👍

A rooster attacked all my garlic yesterday and I pulled two up and they hadn’t made it to the bulb stage at all. I don’t know why nothing is there yet
It’s been raining almost everyday at some point 😩
I've had that same issue this year. If they are ready just get them out!
I don't have anywhere that's dark and airey. What can I do to cure it and store it? Can I put them in the freezer?

Thank you for replies.
When is a good time to plant garlic?
In the fall, usually after your first frost date but before the ground freezes. I plant mine in late October or Early November.
So I did it wrong.. MA and planted late spring….. any suggestions?

@@Jeff-rd6hb thanks!
I was always told to wait until the garlic is completely dead on top like potatoes. 🤷♀️
